Please join us in prayer for :
1st Sunday of Advent Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church December 1, 2019
From the Pastor:
The recently canonized Saint John Henry Newman can help us this Advent receive the greatest gift of a deeper love of and knowledge of Jesus in our lives:
There is another reason why God alone is the happiness of our souls, to which I wish to direct attention. The contemplation of Him, and nothing but it, is able fully to open and relieve the mind, to unlock, occupy, and fix our affections. We may indeed love things created with great intenseness, but such affection, when disjoined from the love of the Creator, is like a stream running in a narrow channel, impetuous, vehement, turbid. The heart runs out, as it were, only at one door; it is not an expanding of the whole man. Created natures cannot open us, or elicit the ten thousand mental senses which belong to us, and through which we really live. None but the presence of our Maker can enter us; for to none besides can the whole heart in all its thoughts and feel-ings be unlocked and subjected. “Behold,” He says, “I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” “My Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” “God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts.” “God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.” It is this feeling of simple and ab-solute confidence and communion which soothes and satisfies those to whom it is vouchsafed.
God bless you as you pray well this holy season!
With love and prayers, Fr. Francis

Third Annual Taize Service OLSH Chapel Sunday Dec.
1, 7 PM
Taize, which originated in
France, is the name for sung or chanted Christian prayer, with musical accompaniment, using simple repetitive words, refrains and melodies.
“It is a time to rest in God, to let the words listened to and sung penetrate one’s being.”
So says Brother John, a Taizé monk, in lectures and writings explaining what the service is all about.
There is no preaching, no teaching, no talk of sin or repentance or forgiveness. There is just this ele-gantly simple service: short chants, repeated several times as well as short Scripture readings or psalms, and silence, time to be at peace. A Taize prayer ser-vice is an hour or less.
Invite a friend… come with
family … join us for a peaceful,
beautiful, prayerful experience
as we prepare for Jesus’ birth!
Before the stress and “busy-ness of the Christmas season is upon us—Let us begin the Advent sea-son together as a parish family by participating
in a very special and beautiful devotion.

Relic of St. John
Henry Newman
now resides at
OLSH
With prayerful gratitude our parish acknowledges a gift from Kathy and Joseph
Mastropolo, of a beautiful cross containing a documented relic of newly canonized St. John Henry Newman, an Oratorian. It is now permanently placed on our Main Altar for veneration. (see certificate of authenticity—in Latin—bottom right) Earlier, the Parish also was blessed to receive from Cardinal Egan an original copy of The Liturgical Celebration of the Holy Eucharist and Beatification of the Servant of God, John Henry Newman, used on the occasion of his Beatification on Sept. 19, 2010 In Birmingham, England. This volume is housed in the Oratory Chapel in our parish. John Henry Newman, the 19th-century’s most important Eng-lish-speaking Roman Catholic theologian, spent the first half of his life as an Anglican and the second half as a Roman Catholic. He was a priest, popular preacher, writer, and eminent theolo-gian in both churches. In 1847, he was ordained a Catholic priest in Rome and joined the Congregation of the Oratory, founded three centuries earli-er by Saint Philip Neri. Returning to England, Newman founded Oratory houses in Birmingham and London and for seven years served as rector of the Catholic University of Ireland. Newman eventually wrote 40 books and 21,000 letters that survive. When Newman was named a cardinal in 1879, he took as his motto “Cor ad cor loquitur”—“Heart speaks to heart.” He was buried in Rednal 11 years later. After his grave was exhumed in 2008, a new tomb was prepared at the Oratory church in Bir-
mingham. Three years after Newman died, a Newman Club for Catholic students began at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelph-ia. In time, his name was linked to ministry centers at many public and private colleges and universities in the United States. In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Newman in London. Bene-dict noted Newman’s emphasis on the vital place of revealed religion in civilized society, but also praised his pastoral zeal for the sick, the poor, the bereaved, and those in prison. Pope Fran-cis canonized Newman in October 2019. Saint John Henry New-man’s liturgical feast is October 9. Excerpted from: https://www.franciscanmedia.org/blessed-john-henry-newman/

December 7 -
First Friday
The First Friday Devotion
First Friday devotions are related to devotion to the Sacred Heart of Christ. First Friday practices date to the last decades of the 17th centu-ry, when Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary and spoke to her of His Sacred Heart. Among the prom-ises Our Lord revealed to St. Margaret Mary, the 12th specifically referenced practices for Fridays:
In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Com-munion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final re-pentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart, as given to St. Mar-garet by Jesus, began to grow in popularity as soon as the saintly woman had died, but was officially recognized 75 years later. Though the devotion dic-tated to Margaret referred to 9 consecutive first Fridays, it does not need to end there. Many of the faithful continue to make the First Friday devotion beyond the nine consecutive months.
Holy Mass on Friday is devoted to the Sacred Heart and to the Precious Blood of Jesus. Due in part to the promise revealed by Christ to St. Margaret Mary, attending Mass on the First Friday of the month is popular among many Catholics, even if they are unable to attend daily mass regularly throughout the week. Reception of the Holy Eucha-rist on such Fridays was popular even in years when frequent Communion was not. Fridays, particularly the first Friday of the month, are the popular day in many parishes for the Blessed Sacrament to be tak-en to the sick and homebound.

This year the celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception is moved to Monday, December 9 be-cause it falls on a Sunday and the Ad-vent Liturgy takes precedence. It is
also not a Holy Day of Obligation this year. We will have three Masses on Monday, December 9 and Expo-sition of the Blessed Sacrament will continue as usual on Monday, 8:30 AM—Noon. However, there is NO VIGIL Mass on Sunday evening. This is one of the most beautiful feasts honoring the Blessed Mother. Find some time to spend with Mary and her Son.
Adopt-a-Family Many children and their families in Rockland are unable to joyfully celebrate the holidays without the support of generous neighbors.
Catholic Charities Community Services invites you to adopt a family of one, two or more and will provide a list of simple needs and wishes including sizes and ages.
Last year this program was able to put a smile on the faces of 165 adults and 255 children. Can you help care for even more this year?
This is a wonderful project for a family to do together!
Interested? Call 845-942-5791 ext. 17 or email: [email protected] (put Adopt-a family) in the subject line)

1st Sunday of Advent Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church December 1, 2019
The Children’s Page:
Today is a very special day. Today is the first Sunday of Advent and we have started the countdown to Christ-mas. There are many things that people do to get ready for Christmas, aren't there? Let's see, what are some of the things that we do to prepare for Christmas? We have to put up our Christmas tree, lights, and decorations. We have to get our Christmas cards addressed and mailed. We have a lot of shopping to do to buy gifts for our
family and friends. There is a lot of cooking that must be done -- Christ-mas cookies and candy and, of course, we must buy all of the food for Christmas dinner. Can you think of any things that I have forgotten? (Allow kids to answer.)
While we are getting ready for Christmas, there is something else that we must be prepared for as well. Jesus promised that he would come again and the Bible tells us that we must be watching and be prepared for his return. We all know when Christmas is coming, but when will Jesus come again? The Bible says that no one knows the hour of his return. Not even the angels who announced his birth know when he will come again.
If we don't know when he is coming, how can we be prepared? If we want to be prepared for Jesus' coming, we must always be busy doing the things that he told us to do. We must be loving God and loving one another. What are some things we can do? (Allow kids to answer.)
It is fun and exciting to prepare for Christmas, but we must also be pre-pared for that day when Jesus comes again.
Dear Father, we love this sea-
son of the year. We love the
preparation for the celebra-
tion of the birth of our Savior,
Jesus Christ. Help us also re-
member that he is coming
again and that you have told
us to be prepared. In Jesus'
name, amen.
