Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Thanks to those who decorated our church for the Christmas Season and have now prepared it for the next eight green weeks of Ordinary Time. Thanks also to all who worked on and contributed to last week’s Winter Relief. To those who coordinated the various facets of the program, to those who set up and cleaned up, to those who prepared and served meals, to those who supervised medications and provided haircuts and mani-cures, to those who provided transportation to shower facilities and other destinations, to those who provided entertainment, to those who served as monitors, especially the overnight monitors, to those who helped with laundry, and to those who contributed food, clothing, and financial support thank you for making Winter Relief possible in our parish. I especially want to acknowledge the leadership of Dawne Schroeder Elmiger who com-pletes five years of Winter Relief leadership service, and our parish youth who served meals, did the dishes, and took out the trash. All of you were the face of the compassion of Christ, the Good Shepherd, to our Winter Relief guests, our parish, and our local communities. Your service together was a living human experience of God’s love and mercy that Jesus was born to bring us. You have given us a beautiful example of discipleship and have shown us the goodness of God’s mercy and love. What you did was not always easy or without challenge. You have blessed us with God’s work. As you know a son of Our Lady of the Fields, Bishop-designate Adam Parker, will be ordained a bishop for service as an Auxiliary Bishop in our archdiocese this Thursday. Please pray for him in these final days of his ordination preparation and as he begins his shepherding service to us. I have worked with him for a number of years, and I have great respect for his wisdom and sense of pastoral care. He is truly a parish son of whom we can all be proud. He will be with us on February 5, 2017 to celebrate an 11:00 am Mass of Thanksgiving and a reception afterwards. I know it is Super Bowl Sunday but the kickoff is not until 6:30 pm. Be sure to join us as we give thanks to God for Bishop Parker’s ministry and pray for God’s blessing upon him in his service to the church. I learned this week that he has been assigned to celebrate our Confirmation Ceremonies in March. This is likely to be his first of many confirmations; he has assured me that he will do his best to avoid rookie mistakes. In this week’s second reading St. Paul expresses a deep sense of his call to be a disciple and an apostle of Je-sus: to proclaim the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Bishop Parker discovered that same call as he prayed in our church, served our masses, prepared for the sacraments, and participated in our parish as a young person. God could also being calling you, or your son, daughter, or grandchildren to service in the church as a priest, deacon, vowed religious man or woman, or lay ecclesial minister. There were people who helped and supported Bishop Parker in his vocational discernment. We should do the same for our youth. We may be the voice they need to hear God’s call.
May God’s Peace be Yours,
Msgr. Jay

Breaking Bread with the Hungry
Dear Companions,
We broke bread with 204 guests. Because of the cold, we waited inside for the meal to begin. We were all hungry and the smell and sight of the food made us hungrier. It seems that to hunger is to be human and perhaps to recognize our oneness in our common need.
We had a more than usual number come in late as cleanup was already beginning. They looked worried and asked if they were too late to get something to eat. When told to have a seat and that food was on its way, their attitude of relief and gratitude was evident. Good News to the hungry is a hot meal.
