Corpus Christi
The Solemnity of the Body and Blood
of Christ
“Take it; this is my body...
This is my blood of the covenant,
which will be shed for many.” (Mk. 14:22,24) Last Sunday, the Church celebrated Trinity Sunday. On
Pentecost Sunday the Holy Trinity was fully revealed to us as Jesus sent
the promised Holy Spirit upon his Apostles and disciples and to the entire
Church. The life of God would be fully made known to all believers. So,
it is most appropriate that on the Sunday after Pentecost the entire
Church praised and honored the Trinity in whose life every member has
been baptized!
Living the life of the Trinity, a life of communion in the love
of God, brings us to the reality of the Sacrament of the Body and Blood
of Christ. This gift of Jesus of himself to us at the Last Supper nourishes
us spiritually in our journey to the heavenly kingdom so that we can
grow in that very love which is the communion of the Mystery of the
Trinity. Jesus said: “Amen, Amen, I say to you unless you eat the flesh
of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within
you.” (Jn. 6:52) This Solemnity of Corpus Christ itself draws us closer to
know Jesus in his real presence in the Holy Eucharist as we ponder and
meditate upon this wondrous sacramental mystery of Christ.
The origin of the Solemnity of “Corpus Christi” is connected to
the intense devotion to the Blessed Sacrament during the twelfth century.
At this time the consecrated host began to be elevated at the consecration
of the Mass as we are accustomed today. Bishop Robert of Liege,
France, introduced this feast into his diocese in 1246. In 1264 Pope
Urban IV extended it to the entire Church. Soon, thereafter, processions
through the towns with the Eucharist became commonplace with
blessings being offered. This devotional custom has come down to us
today. Corpus Christi, then, is a joyful celebration of thanksgiving for
the Eucharist as the fruit of our redemption in the Paschal Mystery of
Christ. (The Lit. Year.,Adam, p.171) whereas the Church commemorates
the institution of the Eucharist on Holy Thursday in connection with the
events of Good Friday and the Passion of Christ.
On February 22, 2007, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI issued a
beautiful Apostolic Exhortation on the Eucharist (Sacramentum
Caritatis) in which he states: “The Eucharist reveals the loving plan that
guides all of salvation history (cf. Eph 1:10; 3:8- 11)...God is a perfect
communion of love between Father, Son and Holy Spirit...But it is in
Christ, dead and risen, and in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, given
without measure (cf. Jn 3:34), that we have become sharers of God's
inmost life. (16) Jesus Christ, who "through the eternal Spirit offered
himself without blemish to God" (Heb 9:14), makes us, in the gift of the
Eucharist, sharers in God's own life. This is an absolutely free gift, the
superabundant fulfilment of God's promises. The Church receives,
celebrates and adores this gift in faithful obedience. The "mystery of
faith" is thus a mystery of trinitarian love, a mystery in which we are
called by grace to participate. We too should therefore exclaim with Saint
Augustine: "If you see love, you see the Trinity." (17)
Reflection. Today’s feast poses some important questions for
reflection: Do I take time to pray before the Blessed Sacrament? Do I
come to Church early to prepare to receive our Lord in quiet reflection or
am I always late for the celebration of the Eucharist? Do I reverence the
Blessed Sacrament with a genuflection or bow? Do I receive
communion properly, i.e. in the state of grace, fasting for one hour before
receiving Communion, and bowing before I receive? After receiving
Communion, do I take time to thank Jesus and recollect my thoughts on
what I am doing or do I leave Mass early with little time to think about
how Jesus in now in me? Do I realize that the Eucharist unites me with
Jesus, with my family and my neighbor? Do I realize that the Eucharist
helps me to grown in the charity of Christ?
In his Encyclical, Ecclesia de Eucharistia”, St. John Paul II
wrote:“When the Church celebrates the Eucharist, the memorial of her
Lord's death and resurrection, this central event of salvation becomes
really present and ‘the work of our redemption is carried out.’
This sacrifice is so decisive for the salvation of the human race
that Jesus Christ offered it and returned to the Father only after he had
left us a means of sharing in it as if we had been present there. Each
member of the faithful can thus take part in it and inexhaustibly gain its
fruits. This is the faith from which generations of Christians down the
ages have lived. The Church's Magisterium has constantly reaffirmed this
faith with joyful gratitude for its inestimable gift. I wish once more to
recall this truth and to join you, my dear brothers and sisters, in adoration
before this mystery: a great mystery, a mystery of mercy. What more
could Jesus have done for us? Truly, in the Eucharist, he shows us a love
which goes ‘to the end’ (cf. Jn 13:1), a love which knows no
measure.” (Eccles. de Euchar., #11) Msgr. John M. Savinski

awesome time! Once again, you outdid yourself.
Thank you for all you do for our school.
Field Day would not go off without a hitch if it
wasn’t for the support of our wonderful parents. Thank
you to all those who were able to volunteer to run the
games, man the kitchen, and help put everything away.
Your constant support of OLA is always greatly
appreciated. Thank you, too, to the Home and School
for our Chick-fil-A lunch. You know it is our favorite!
We would like to congratulate our newly elected
