Sunday Reflection

Dear brothers and sisters,

“Peace be with you.” These were the first words of our Lord Jesus Christ when he first appeared to his disciples after his Resurrection and they are powerful

words that should change our hearts and our minds every time we hear them. As we just celebrated All Saints Day, All Souls Day and the Funeral Mass of Fr. Peter Ha, I can only picture the loving face of Christ welcoming them home with those exact same words, “Peace be with you.” Because first and foremost that is what Christ offers. He offers us peace in the midst of our challenges, peace in the midst of our sufferings, and peace in our death. He offers us this peace because he gave of himself conquering sin and death reminding us that the peace and love of God is stronger than anything else. But, he also offers us peace because he himself is peace. He is the prince of peace. He is the embodiment of peace. And he fills our brokenness and our sorrow, he fills the emptiness within us with his very self to give us the courage, the grace and the resolve to experience the goodness of Christ and truly be at peace. We acknowledge the peace that Christ offers to us all, the living and the dead. We put our faith and trust in Him. And we entrust our beloved dead to his merciful care. Eternal rest grant unto all the faithful departed Lord, and let perpetual Help shine on them. May Fr. Peter and all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

This Tuesday is election day and I encourage all of us who are able to vote to do so. Over the last two weeks, bulletin inserts were given to help us make the best conscientious choice as Catholics. I pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide us and may we remember that whatever the outcome may be, who we are as Catholic will never change because we are ultimately held accountable not to humanity, but to God. “You cannot serve both God and mammon.”

This Friday is Veteran’s Day. We will have a special mass honoring and praying for the men and women of our armed forces at 8:30AM. Our offices will be closed on Veteran’s Day and the church will close following the morning masses.

Please help out Irving Sandoval in his Eagle Scout Project and our Justice and Peace Committee as they prepare for the annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. These are wonderful ways that we can continue to give back and support one another as the Body of Christ. Blessings always.

Our Lady of Peace… pray for us.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

PRAYER BEFORE AN ELECTION

Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our city/state/country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community. We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty. We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, Men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender. We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom. We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
