LIVING OUR FAITH
Prayer for Hurricane Season Fr. Al Volpe, Cameron Parish, LA
O God, Master of this passing world, hear the
humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee
obeyed your order and returned to its former
quietude; you are still the Master of land and
sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over
which we have no control. The Gulf, like a
provoked and angry giant, can awake from its
seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional
boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and
disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to
You, O loving Father. Spare us from past
tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and
whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the
passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our
Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your
Son in our behalf, so that spared from the
calamities common to this area and animated with
a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the
footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the
heavenly Jerusalem where a storm-less eternity
awaits us.
Amen.
Witnesses for Our Time St. María Guadalupe García Zavala Cofounder, Handmaids of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and the Poor (1878–1963) Her feast day is June 24.
With deep faith, unlimited hope and great love for Christ, Mother ‘Lupita’ lived the motto that she left to her daughters: “Charity to the point of sacrifice and perseverance unto death.” —Pope John Paul II
María Guadalupe García Zavala was born in Jalisco, Mexico. At the age of twenty-three she broke off an engagement, convinced that Jesus was calling her to serve the poor. When her spiritual director described his intention to form a religious congregation devoted to the sick poor, María agreed to join him. In 1901, after attracting other women, they cofounded the Handmaids of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and the Poor, and set up a small hospital. María, also known as “Mother Lupita,” served as Superior General.
The congregation steadily grew. On top of her administrative duties—eleven foundations were established in Mexico during her lifetime—María devoted herself to nursing her patients, attending to both their physical and spiritual needs. Wishing to be “poor with the poor,” she did not hesitate, when funds ran short, to beg in the streets.
The Mexican Revolution was followed by a long period of anti-Catholic persecution. To continue their work, María and her sisters were forced for some years to put aside their religious habits. She risked her life by hiding priests and even the archbishop of Guadalajara in her hospital. Eventually the storm passed, and she was widely recognized for her service to all in need. She died after a long illness on June 24, 1963. She was canonized in 2013.

Sunday July 16th we will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Mount
Carmel at 3:30 PM at the Parish Hall. Stay tuned for more details.
Hi! This is Margaret with a quick nod to summertime. These are the long awaited months so prized by
children and dreaded by so many parents. Whatever your personal feeling might be, it can be an
opportunity to spend more time with your children, and it might even become an investment with high
returns!
I believe that as parents or any of us touching the lives of children, we all have an opportunity to touch
the future and leave a lasting legacy for generations yet to come.
With that in mind, I'd like to share a recent experience about
directing a child. Yesterday, I was working closely with one of our
Pre-School students and his mom. When I asked the little boy to
set aside his LEGO project and sit next to me for another activity,
he was not especially eager to leave his LEGOs. Noticing this, his
mom said, "How about if you continue your LEGOs for one more
minute and then come?" This approach was successful because
although he was still hesitant, his transition was better. He had
time to think about the next step. His mom (who happens to
be a teacher) explained to me how important transitions are
for four-year olds. She said that they need to be told what
the next step is, then have time to think about it, and
finally, have the opportunity to do it for themselves. This
reminded me of how much I dislike being pulled from one
activity to another in an abrupt manner. A simple two-step
process, "first THIS and then, THAT," is a mode I used to
plan my own activities.
This simple interaction was a positive learning experience for
me. I observed the importance of respecting another’s autonomy, allowing transition time and still giving
good direction to a child. Having survived many years as the oldest child, I thought that I could just
bark orders and expect younger siblings to obey. Experience and education have taught me that this
learning module will be something I can incorporate into the interactions I have with the young people in
faith formation here at OLMC.
Speaking of transition times, I’ve recently moved from one home into another. You all know how long it
takes to feel at home in a new place and find all the things you’d packed so carefully? Maybe we can just
take a moment to pray for all who are transitioning for various reasons, not just the kids (and parents)
beginning summer vacation, and allow ourselves and others the grace and time to transition well.

Christian Music
Bread of Life Bernadette Farrell, British Catholic hymn writer 1982, Breaking Bread 2017 #319
Bread of life, hope of the world, Jesus Christ, our brother; feed us now, give us life, lead us to one another.
As we proclaim your death as we recall your life,
We remember your promise to return again. The bread we break and share was scattered once as grain: Just as now it is gathered, make your people one.
We eat this living bread, we drink this saving cup: Sign of hope in our broken world, source of lasting love.
Bernadette Farrell (b. 1957) is one of many musicians who compose contemporary Catholic liturgical music. This music has enjoyed widespread success throughout the English-speaking world. Among her best-known compositions are "Christ, Be Our Light", "Restless Is The Heart", "God, Beyond All Names" and "O God, You Search Me".
