Dear Friends, Valentine's Day has become a day when we tell those we love, particularly one's spouse, how much they are valued and cherished. It is a day typically filled with hearts and greetings of love and affection. Most women find it easy to express their love to their husbands. Sometimes men aren't as good at that. Maybe that is why we men need Valentine's Day more than women do. Yet, what is the origin of this day? During the third century there were a number of people with the name Valentine or Valentinus who were martyred. The Emperor Claudius II believed that single men were better soldiers than those who were married. So, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, a priest, realizing the injustice of this decree secretly officiated at the weddings of young lovers. When the emperor discovered this, he was executed. There was a priest or bishop named Valentine of Terni. While in jail for spreading the faith, something forbidden in the Roman Empire at the time, he was told he would be freed if he could heal the judge’s adopted daughter who was blind. He cured her and asked that all the Christians in that prison be released as well. In addition, the judge was to destroy all the pagan idols and be converted to Christianity himself. When Emperor Claudius heard of this, he had Valentine beaten and beheaded on Feb. 14, 270 AD. As he was being carried off to execution, he wrote a note of encouragement to the girl he had cured of blindness and signed it, “From your Valentine”. The true nature of who St. Valentine was would be an inspiration for those facing challenges. He strengthened the one he loved to remain strong, virtuous, and faithful to God even in the midst of violence and persecution. The romantic part of Valentine’s Day probably has to do with the pagan holiday celebrated in the Roman Empire on Feb. 15th as the feast of Lupercal, a day to honor Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. On the feast day sacrifices would be made and the hides of the animals would be dipped in the blood and touched to the cattle so they might be fertile that spring. It often was done to young women that they might also bear children. On the eve of Lupercalia, young men would draw lots bearing the names of single girls whose names were placed in a large urn; the two would then be sweethearts for the whole year. Often this would lead to marriage. Catholic pastors, however, would encourage young people to invoke the saint to seek true love informed by Christian grace. Like a lot of Catholic lore, we may never know all the facts about who St. Valentine was. Maybe he was a combination of a couple martyrs of that period in the Church’s history. But what we learn is that the saint was more than just about hearts and roses. He spread the faith, he cured the sick, and he challenged the injustice of the empire. This is what we are called to do in our day. We stand as witnesses of the Gospel inside the church and in the marketplace. We challenge people and systems that hold values contrary to the Gospel. We do these things through Faith Formation and RCIA, Ministry to the Sick, and FAITH. So, on St. Valentine’s Day enjoy time with your beloved, but also thank God for the faith he sacrificed his life for so that we might be able to worship today. Peace, Fr. Chris Question to Ponder: Where does your faith shine like a light for others? Fr. Chris, Spiritual Advisor

OUR CATHOLIC APPEAL What God has prepared for those who love Him! Jesus’ power is the tenderness of His very heart which gives life to us. We are called to renew our world in Christ and collaborating with Christ to transform His people into the kingdom of God. This kingdom was revealed as present in the person and actions of Jesus Christ. This kingdom is ours to also fulfill with God through the ministries supported by Our Catholic Appeal which invite Him into our daily living. Our Parish goal for Our Catholic Appeal For 2020 is $180,598. Once we achieve our goal, the majority of the additional funds will be returned to our parish to support our own special needs. We will celebrate Our Catholic Appeal Weekend on February 15th or 16th. Please prayerfully consider and come prepared to make your sacrificial gift. For your convenience, all pledges can be paid in ten monthly install-ments. PLEASE RETURN YOUR PLEDGES TO OUR LADY OF HOPE , do not mail them to the Diocese as it delays your response in our records. Thank you in advance for your support.

PLEASE REMEMBER OUR LADY OF HOPE IN YOUR WILL.

D A N ’ S C O R N E R - M A Y I L I S T E N

May I listen to your worries, Though you feel despair, If you talk with me a moment, You will see that I do care, Please share with me your sorrow, Don’t be ashamed to shed a tear, I’ll listen to your worries, Try to help remove the fear,

I cannot solve your problems, This is something only you can do, But talking through your worries, May give an overview. Perhaps within the silence, You might just be aware That deep within the silence is someone else who cares

Regulat ions for Fast & Abst inence

Ash Wednesday, February 26 is a day of fast and abstinence . Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence.

(Ash Wednesday Services: 8:30am Mass; Noon Liturgy of the Word & 7:00pm Mass)

Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal one

full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids including milk, and juices are allowed. Abstinence is observed by all 14 years and older. On days of abstinences no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fasting and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted. Fasting, almsgiving and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and or preparation for baptism or renewals of baptism at Easter.

PARISH MISSION Our Lady of Hope will once again welcome Father Richard Leonard, S. J. (Father Ray’s Cousin). He was here in March, 2015. He will preach at all the Masses the weekend of March 14th and March 15th. The mission will be March 16th-March 18th. The Sessions will be as follows: Monday, March 16 Sessions: “Listening Before We Speak?” Morning from 9:00am-10:15am Evening 7:00pm-8:15pm We will look at a large international survey of young Catholics 15-25 years of age asking them what they are most looking for amongst as, what are the major obstacles to them joining and participating in the life

of the Church. How can the church respond to these challenges. Tuesday, March 17th Sessions: “Context is everything” Morning from 9:00am-10:15am Evening 7:00pm-8:15pm Young people are now faced with an array of options and choices most of them explored through film, television, the interneand social media. How well do we know the media culture that is profoundly forming the values of our young people (and us) and how does our Catholic tradition help us respond to it? How do we all download the best and leave the rest? Wednesday, March 18th Sessions: “Glimpsing Eternity ” Morning from 9:00am-10:15am Evening 7:00pm-8:15pm Given that the media culture is now the primary vehicle for how many young Catholics encounter Otherness through big stories, contemplate other worlds, other realties, other forms of being, spirits, demons and angels, think about metaphysics and meta-ethics. How can the Church harness the best of the media world in a way that deepens faith, for us and our children, affirms the best of our values and aids prayer? Father Richard is a Jesuit priest. He has degrees in arts and education, as well as a Master’s degree in theology. Fr. Richard did graduate studies at the London Film School and has a PhD from the University of Melbourne. He directs the Australian Catholic Office for Film & Broadcasting, has been a Visiting Professor of Communications at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, is an Honorary Fellow of Australian Catholic University and has been a visiting scholar with the School of Theatre, Film & Television at UCLA. Author of several books entitled: “Why Bother Praying” Where the Hell is God”, “What Are we Waiting For? Reflections for Advent & Christmas” , “What Are We Doing on Earth for Christ’s Sake?” His newest book, “Hatch, Match and Dispatch” All his books available for purchase in the parish office or at the morning and evening missions. Funeral Notification and Planning

The death of a loved one is always painful, yet requires timely decisions for scheduling funeral rites. Contacting the funeral home/cremation provider of your choice is the first response following the death of a loved one. The funeral home or family member (for those who choose to use a direct cremation service/ society) should then contact, Dan Weimer, the Funeral Coordinator at Our Lady of Hope at (386) 299-4490. Dan will assist with scheduling a Mass or Service, and arrange an appointment with the family to plan the Funeral Mass/Service. Funeral Masses may be scheduled with the decedent in a casket or with cremated remains once the remains are available. Funeral Masses are scheduled and celebrated at Our Lady of Hope at the 8:30 a.m. Mass Monday

through Friday. Memorial Masses are not permitted in the Diocese of Orlando (this means the absence of a body or cremains). A date for a Funeral Mass/Service cannot be scheduled without the funeral home or family member contacting Dan. This policy is in place to avoid scheduling conflicts and assure the availability of the church and a priest. There are brochures available in the pamphlet racks in the church or parish office which speak about the Church’s teachings on Catholic Funerals and Cremation.

Bereavement Ministry (Comfort and Care)

SEASONS OF HOPE - A six week program, rooted in Catholic tradition, conveys God’s consolation through scripture, prayer, reflection and sharing our faith. Each year many families face the loss of loved ones. Seasons of Hope offers the bereaved an opportunity to come together to share with others and can give a voice to your unique journey of grief, finding healing and hope. The current session began on January 25, 2020. If you would like to speak confidentially or register for the sessions, please contact Pam Flesch at 386-788-1316. MOVING ON– This ministry began two years ago and now has approximately 20 attendees each month. Based on the curriculum and articles that Maryann has written, the gatherings involve scripture, prayer, and sharing the everyday adjust-

ments following the death of a loved one. The goal of MOVING ON after sadness and replacing joy in our lives is the highlight of our meetings. Mission Statement: “Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church is a worshipping and welcoming parish community serving the Kingdom of God. We celebrate and live our faith in Jesus Christ through the Sacraments, and

by our words and actions.”

SPIRITUAL SHAPE UPSPIRITUAL SHAPE UPSPIRITUAL SHAPE UP Welcome back to the Ordinary Time. Ordinary time is the church season between Christmas and Lent and then between Easter and Advent. During this time we journey along with Jesus throughout his adult ministry. During the next few weeks of Ordinary Time, we will explore issues related to Right to Life.

RIGHT TO LIFE WEEK 4: QUALITY OF LIFE

Right to life issues aren’t just birth and death issues, but also issues related to quality of life. Things like access to health care, enough food to eat, shelter, water to drink, safe environment and education are all examples of issues that are related to the quality of life that a person has. As Catholics, we are called to help insure that every person has access to these things. What can you do this week to help another person gain access to these things? Do you have extra food, clothes you can donate to one of our ministries - Outreach, Thrift Store or Loaves and Fishes? Can you pray for our society to have a great respect and care for each person? Can you lobby a politician for better assistance in one of these areas? Pick one of these things to do this week.

Want to go deeper: Do some research on a livable wage. How much money does it take for a single person to live in Port Orange? How about a single parent or a dual income family of 4? How many people in our community make less than that?

Coming in March—Parish Book Club and Study Group

This past Christmas, you received an extra holiday gift: a book about the saints—Rediscover the Saints written by Matthew Kelly. He says, “The Saints show us what is possible, and what is possible is amazing. Take time to reflect. Look deeper. You and I—human beings– are capable of incredible things.” YOU are invited to reflect and look deeper with us! Join us beginning in March to take a deeper dive into this wonderful book and how to connect it to your life.

Great way to enrich your faith during the season of Lent! Watch for book club schedule coming soon in bulletin!
