INFANT BAPTISMS For children under 7 years of age, the sacrament is celebrated the FIRST Sunday of the month at 2:00 pm. The parents must register in the parish office at least 4 weeks prior to the baptism. Both parents and godparents are expected to attend one catechetical session in advance, on the Wednesday before the baptism, at 7:00 pm.

SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION Before being fully initiated into the sacramental life of the Church, children over the age of 7 will need catechetical prepa-ration through the RCIC process. Teenagers and adults will par-ticipate in separate RCIA processes. CONFIRMATION and COMMUNION For those already baptized, preparation for these Sacraments will take place according to the person’s age and knowledge of the Catholic Faith. For further information contact the Office of Faith Formation Program.

MARRIAGES Couples should contact the parish office at least six months in advance to make the proper ar rangements for the Sacrament of Matrimony.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Parishioners,

We have passed through our first week of Lent 2018. There are five more weeks to go in the desert of material and spiritual trials. What is so important to know for those who believe in Jesus is that our Savior is always right there walking with us on the journey and leading us to everlasting life.

Last Sunday afternoon, the Fifth Pastor of Our Lady of Fatima, Msgr. John E. Mahoney, died at New York Presbyterian Hospital from on-going complications to his health. Our parish mourns his death and we pray for his family, friends and all who came to know Msgr. during his 71 years that God had given to him as a blessing.

Msgr. Mahoney served as a priest of our diocese for 46 years. He was pastor of Blessed Sacrament in Brooklyn, Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Bayside and here at Our Lady of Fatima in East Elmhurst. He also served as Episcopal Vicar of Brooklyn East and as part of the Faculty of Cathedral Prep Seminary.

Msgr. Mahoney was a gentle and caring shepherd during a time of transition for our parish as he took over from Msgr. Michael Brennan who became ill and during the illness and passing of Fr. Eugene Don-nelly, a pillar of our community who served at Our Lady of Fatima for 47 years. Msgr. Mahoney will be missed and remembered for the good spirit that he shared with us all. His Funeral Mass took place last Friday at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston. We will be having a Memorial Mass here at the parish on a date that will be given as soon as the arrangements are made.

Msgr. Mahoney has completed his journey in this life and has gone on to his heavenly reward. Let us pray for him and remember the good example he gave us. Let us also ask Our Lady of Fatima to encou-rage us to see and follow her Son, who is with us always as we continue our journey of faith in the time that God graciously gives to us.

THE OBEDIENCE OF ABRAHAM AND JESUS   God tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacrifice, which would have been a par al burn-ing with the meat divided between God and the people and eaten by those who sacrificed, but for a holo-caust, a total burning of the sacrificial animal. This type of sacrifice consecrated the en re offering to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abraham in offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his obedience, that was enough. This story from today’s scriptures foretells the comple on of the blood sacrifices of the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God’s own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist. Abraham’s obedience foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to God’s promise of salva-on. The obedience of Abraham is rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many na ons. The obedi-

ence of Jesus is rewarded in the salva on of all people for all  me. 

LA OBEDIENCIA DE ABRAHAM Y JESÚS Dios probó a Abraham al pedir no un sacrificio ordinario, que habría sido un fuego parcial con la carne dividida entre Dios y la gente y comido por aquellos que sacrificaron, sino por un holocausto, una que-ma total del animal sacrificial. Este tipo de sacrificio consagró toda la ofrenda a Dios solo. Esto es lo que Dios le estaba pidiendo a Abraham al ofrecerle a su único hijo, Isaac. Cuando Abraham demostró su obediencia, eso fue suficiente. Esta historia de las escrituras de hoy predice la finalización de los sacrificios de sangre del antiguo pacto en el nuevo pacto: la sangre del propio Hijo de Dios, que se nos ofrece en la cruz y en la Eucaristía. La obediencia de Abraham presagia la obediencia de Jesús a la promesa de salvación de Dios. La obediencia de Abraham se recompensa en el nacimiento a él, a través de Isaac, de muchas naciones. La obediencia de Jesús es recompensada en la salvación de todas las personas de todos los tiempos..

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PÁRROCO

Queridos Feligreses: Hemos pasado nuestra primera semana de Cuaresma 2018. Hay cinco semanas más para ir por el desierto de pruebas materiales y espirituales. Lo que es tan importante es saber para aquellos que creen en Jesús es que nuestro Salvador siempre está allí caminando con nosotros en el camino y guiándonos a la vida eterna. El domingo pasado por la tarde, el quinto pastor de Nuestra Señora de Fátima, Mons. John E. Ma-honey, falleció en el hospital New York Presbyterian debido a complicaciones con su salud. Nuestra parroquia está de luto por su muerte y rezamos por su familia, amigos y todos los que lo conocieron a Mons. durante sus 71 años que Dios le dió como una bendición. Mons. Mahoney sirvió como sacerdote de nuestra diócesis durante 46 años. Fue pastor de el Santísi-mo Sacramento en Brooklyn, Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Sacramento en Bayside y aquí en Nuestra Señora de Fátima en East Elmhurst. También se desempeñó como vicario episcopal de Brooklyn East y como parte de la Facultad de Cathedral Prep Seminary. Mons. Mahoney fue un pastor gentil y afectuoso durante un tiempo de transición para nuestra par-roquia cuando tomo el cargo de las manos de Mons.
