SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES The phrase “Sunday best” has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it’s a healthy sign that we’re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man’s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark’s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

DEBES VER MÁS ALLÁ DE LAS APARIENCIAS La frase “vestido de domingo” ha perdido gran parte de su significado en la sociedad actual. Algunos se lamentan de que la gente ya no se ponga elegante para asistir a la iglesia los domingos; otros consideran que es un síntoma saludable que nos vistamos tan informalmente cuando nos reunimos ante el Señor como en los demás lugares. Sin importar cuál sea nuestra opinión sobre este tema, Santiago seguramente nos reprendería. En ambos casos, seguimos centrándonos en las apariencias, creyendo que suponen una especie de posición privilegiada ante Dios. Es cierto, Santiago critica a la comunidad que favorece a los ricos y bien vestidos mientras condena al ostracismo a los que están pobremente vestidos, pero critica aún más a quienes hacen distinciones y toman decisiones en base a criterios que nada tienen que ver con el Reino de Dios. Puede que Santiago enfoque nuestra atención hacia el Reino de Dios que describe Isaías, en el cual la gente es curada y la tierra se hace fértil para dar fruto. Jesús hoy se enfoca en este Reino de Dios cuando cura a un gentil en una región hostil a su fe judía, sin tener en cuenta el origen, la vestimenta ni la condición social de este hombre, ni siquiera su habilidad para retribuirle la atención. Isaías, Santiago y Jesús en el Evangelio según san Marcos nos llaman a ir más allá de las apariencias para averiguar dónde se debe hacer y se ha hecho la voluntad de Dios, así en la tierra como en el cielo. PROMOTION OF THE GIRL-CHILD EDUCATION IN BYUMBA DIOCESE – RWANDA

I extend greetings and prayers to you from the Bishop and people of Byumba diocese. Allow me to explore briefly an outline of Byumba dio-cese. Byumba is one of the nine dioceses found in Rwanda Central-Africa. The diocese was created in 1981. It has twenty-one parishes with a popula-tion of 1,484,125 out of whom 768,749 are Catholic (51.8%) of the total population. There are 125 active priests, 156 women and men religious, and 430 catechists, as of 2016 of statistics. Byumba diocese suffered terrible effects of a horrendous war of 1990-1994 that ended up into genocide against the Tutsi in 1994; needless to say, Byumba lost many lives of her people: the laity, (the first bishop and 16 priests). After the war, the challenging work of rebuilding the nation and diocese begun. The emphasis was put on education at all levels. The New bishop, Servilien Nzakamwita, wanted a change to happen and happen fast. His main focus was to educate parents about the importance of education girls, all girls in the diocese. Education of the girl-child in Africa has been undermined since time immemorial based on wrong premises due to social norms and customs. It must be noted that many concerns and constraints in girls’ education are rooted in deep-seated gender inequalities where boys are favored more than the girls. It was also assumed that girls have roles as mothers, brides and household laborers who should only acquire basic reading, counting and writing skills at primary level and thereafter get married. For the new bishop of Byumba, things had to change to better a girl’s future. After his election to the episcopate in 1996, Bishop Servilien started a struggle to fight for the girl-child’s rights to higher education. In addition to the argument that “educating a girl is educating the nation”, Bishop Servilien believes that “educating a girl is empowering women, reduces ignorance rates in society, and that educated women are a source of peace and unity in family and in entire society”. One of the strategies he has used to realize his dream, of education of girls, is to integrate girls into high schools which were meant for only boys. One of those schools is the College Don Bosco de Rushaki which opened its doors in 1987 for only boys and closed in 1990 due to the wars and the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. When it reopened in 1998, bishop Nzakamwita gave an order to admit, as many girls in the area who are academically capable, into the school and give them opportunity to have unlimited access to high education. From the four apartment blocks which accommodated boys, the bishop gave one to the girls. From that day till now, girls have been admitted into the school and they are very competitive and enthusiastic academically. In 2015 the best student in the district was a girl and from the College Don Bosco de Rushaki. (She is now studying Physics, Chemistry and Biology in one of the best science schools of higher learning in Kigali City. Though from an economically humble family, she is striving to become a Medical Doctor). Today the total enrolment of girls is higher as compared to that of boys at the College de Rushaki. Out of the 408 students who enrolled this school year (2018), 212 are girls. However, the accommodation of girls in this school has remained a very daunting challenge. It was lack of enough room for accommodation that led Bishop Servilien, in collaboration with the parents to come up with an idea to construct a storied multipurpose apart-ment, enough space for a minimum of about 450 girls in this school. Completing the project requires approximately US$393,000. As of this moment, at least $115,000 has been collected from the parents and people of good will since 2015 when the project started. Parental contribution continues up to this day through collection of local building materials, like stones and bricks that are locally molded and baked. As I speak to you, work is already under-way to raise the walls of a ground floor of the building, after completing its foundation structures. Bishop Servilien Nzakamwita is grateful for the invitation your local Church extended to Byumba diocese. He would like to appeal to each and every one of you to contribute generously towards this cause. Your donation will be a big boost to promoting the child girl’s right to higher education in rural places under his jurisdiction. He is excited to share his dream with you in your parish. Also he would like to extend an invitation to you to visit with Byumba diocese at a time of your choice. Your generous contribution is appreciated highly and fondly, for I know for sure, how far it will go to giving hope to little girls from humble beginnings realize their God given potential. Thank you so very much. Les extiendo los saludos y oraciones del Obispo y del pueblo de la diócesis de Byumba. Permítanme compartir brevemente un bosquejo de la diócesis de Byumba. Byumba es una de las nueve diócesis que se encuentran en Ruanda, Centro-África. La diócesis fue creada en 1981. Cuenta con veintiuna parroquias con una población de 1.484.125 de las cuales 768.749 son católicas (51,8%) de la población total. Hay 125 sacerdotes activos, 156 mujeres y hombres religiosos, y 430 catequistas, a partir de 2016 de estadísticas. La diócesis de Byumba sufrió terribles efectos de una horrenda guerra de 1990-1994 que terminó en genocidio contra los Tutsis en 1994; no hace falta decir que Byumba perdió muchas vidas de su pueblo: los laicos, (el primer obispo y 16 sacerdotes). Después de la guerra, el trabajo desafiante de reconstruir la nación y la diócesis comenzado. Se hizo hincapié en la educación a todos los niveles. El nuevo obispo, Servilien Nzakamwita, quería que ocurriera un cambio y pasara rápido. Su principal objetivo era educar a los padres sobre la importancia de la educación de las niñas, de todas las niñas de la diócesis. La educación de la niña en África se ha visto socavada desde tiempos inmemoriales, basándose en premisas erróneas debido a normas y costumbres sociales. Debe tenerse en cuenta que las ideas en contra de la educación de las niñas están basadas en desigualdades de género profun-damente arraigadas culturalmente - los niños son favorecidos más que las niñas. Para el nuevo obispo de Byumba, las cosas tuvieron que cambiar para mejorar el futuro de una niña. Después de su elección al episcopado en 1996, el obispo Servilien comenzó una lucha a favor de los derechos de la niña-niño a la educación superior. Además del argumento de que "educar a una niña es educar a la nación", el obispo Servilien cree que "educar a una niña está empoderando a las mujeres, reduce las tasas de ignorancia en la sociedad, y que las mujeres educadas son una fuente de paz y unidad en la familia y en toda sociedad ". Una de las estrategias que ha utilizado para realizar su sueño, de la educación de las niñas, es integrar a las niñas en las escuelas secundarias que estaban destinados a los niños sólo. Una de esas escuelas es el Colegio Don Bosco de Rushaki que abrió sus puertas en 1987 sólo para varones y cerró en 1990 debido a las guerras y al 1994 genocidio contra los Tutsis. Cuando se reabrió en 1998, el obispo Nzakamwita dio una orden para admitir, cuantas niñas en la zona que fuesen académicamente capa-ces, en la escuela y darles la oportunidad de tener acceso ilimitado a la educación superior. De los cuatro bloques de apartamentos que acomodaban a los niños, el obispo le dio uno a las niñas. Desde ese día hasta ahora, las niñas han sido admitidas en la escuela y son muy competitivas y entusiastas académicamente. En 2015 el mejor estudiante del distrito era una niña y del Colegio Don Bosco de Rushaki. (actualmente estudia física, química y biología en una de las mejores escuelas científicas de enseñanza superior de la ciudad de Kigali. Aunque de una familia económicamente humilde, ella está esforzándose para realizarse como un doctor de medicina). Hoy en día la matriculación total de niñas es mayor en comparación con la de los varones del Colegio de Rushaki. De los 408 estudiantes que matricularon este año escolar (2018), 212 son niñas. Sin embargo, el alojamiento de las niñas en esta escuela ha seguido siendo un desafío muy des-alentador. Fue la falta de espacio suficiente para el alojamiento que llevó al obispo Servilien, en colaboración con los padres para llegar a una idea para construir un edificio multiusos de varios pisos, espacio suficiente para un mínimo de alrededor de 450 niñas en esta escuela. El obispo Servilien Nzakamwita está agradecido por la invitación que esta parroquia extendió a la diócesis de Byumba para hacerles saber de este problema y como una pequeña comunidad lo están cambiando, abatiendo. Y por esto les invitamos a todos y cada uno de ustedes para que se unan hacia esta gran causa contribuyan generosamente. Su donación será un gran impulso para promover el derecho de la niña a la educación supe-rior en los lugares rurales bajo su jurisdicción. Él está emocionado de compartir su sueño con ustedes en su parroquia. También le gustaría extender una invitación a ustedes para visitar a la diócesis de Byumba en un momento de su elección.
