President’s Corner By Walt Gallaugher

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Walt Gallaugher, Presi-dent of DC/RC for the second year in a row. I originally joined the club back in 1984 and have been most active in the hobby for the past eight years. I have served on the board of directors (BOD) for the past six years as the sound and safety officer, VP, and recently Presi-dent. I will do my best to live up to the ob-ligation. I am fortunate to serve as President at this time. The members of the BOD are a dedicated bunch of peo-ple, and friends, who have the best in-terest of the club and its members at heart. The composition of the board has stayed the same with a couple of ex-ceptions. Our newly elected board member, Nir Schweizer was appointed as Sound and Safety Officer and Kevin Jackson volunteered to chair a new three-person BOD nomination commit-tee. The nomination committee was created to help identify club members who wish to serve on the BOD and nominate them at the September 2005 general meeting. This does not pre-clude any other nominations from the floor by club member attending the same meeting. My overall assessment is the club is in good shape with no major issues pending. With the help of the club mem-bers we have accomplished a lot this past year. Some of these accomplish-ments are visible like the new utility shed, sun shelter and the field is well maintained. We have an active, well-managed and supported flight training program and active demo team. All of the club events were well handled and attended also. We have addressed the sound issues that has prompted com-plaints by the neighbors in the past. The newsletter and web site are great and continue to improve with an under-lying goal of presenting interesting club related material in the most cost effec-tive manner. Finally, we have a great working relationship with the county of-ficials and other neighborhood clubs. I personally don’t see the need for any major initiatives for this forthcoming year. I would recommend that we stay

the course, relax and enjoy our field, hobby and friendship. Others club and board mem-bers may feel differently and we will ad-dress any initiatives as they are brought forward. I hope the upcoming year will be a safe and fun one for all. Our continued enjoyment of the hobby and the well be-ing of the club depends greatly upon those members who volunteer their time and effort and to those of you who sim-ply follow the rules. I hope you will give me your support while President of DC/RC. Thanks, Walt.

November 2004 District of Columbia Radio Control Club Page 3 New Business: The boat club is now active every Sunday between noon and four PM at the SoccerPlex facility, accord-ing to Kevin Jackson. Stop by if you have a chance. Maynard Hill asked the members to vote for Dave Brown for AMA president. Maynard believes he is dedicated and knowledgeable and deserves to be reelected. Andy Kane brought the new JR 9303 radio for interested members to examine. It replaces the 8103. Walt Gallaugher announced it was time for elections. Charlie Calvert made a motion to elect the members by affir-mation, since there are three open positions and three nomi-nees. Paul Bastek seconded the motion. The three nomi-nees were Mike Dooley, Michael Peizer and Nir Schweizer. Walt asked those assembled to raise their hand if they were in favor of electing the three nominees to the three open Board positions. Virtually all hands went up. When Walt asked if there were any opposed, no hands were raised. The nominees were duly elected to a three-year term, as set forth by the constitution and by-laws. Raffle: FMA Direct provided this month’s raffle prizes of three fifty-dollar gift certificates The winners were Ira Glikman, David Fepelstein and Jo-seph McDaniel. Model Shop: Ron Bozzonetti showed his “Poor Man’s Jet”. He bought a ducted fan unit from Hobby Lobby and designed a model around it. The first flight was not so good. The model was under-powered. A three-cell lithium polymer battery pack made the next flight much better. Ron still needs to do a bit of tweak-ing to make the model fly the way he wants. The model uses ruddervators with a computer radio. Greg Adams showed a scratch built Boeing P-12 or F4B2 biplane. He has altered the construction to make it lighter. The airplane is almost completed. Now he just needs to learn to fly. Greg has ordered an aluminum cowl for it. David Fepelstein showed a Hostetler 35% Cub. Its first flight was last Sunday in 20-mile an hour winds. Charlie Cal-vert and Fred Nielsen fabricated the model and Dave Harris built it. It took two years to complete, and is powered by a Zenoah G-62. Program: Andy Kane showed some video of the Red Bull full-scale aerobatic air races in Budapest, Hungary. These guys are crazy. They race over the city, down the Danube River between pylons and even under a bridge. www.redbullairrace.com is the link to the website. Next Andy showed a video of a B-52 model in the UK. It is powered by eight turbine jet engines and weighs over 400 pounds! The last video was a model at this year’s War Birds Over Dela-ware meet. It was a Boeing Strato Cruiser, powered by four ZDZ gas engines. Kevin Jackson did a short presentation on controlling electric motors and servos. He explained how servos work. He showed the waveform of a controller on an oscilloscope. He described how a servo is centered and how it moves from one extreme to another in controlling a radio control airplane. A potentiometer is used for feedback to tell where the servo arm is in its arc. Kevin showed what the waveform of the motor controller looked like on the oscilloscope for both the analog and the new high frequency types. It was rather tech-nical and very interesting.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:21 PM.~

Club Meeting MinutesClub Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by president Walt Gallaugher at 8:03 PM. Guests: Pablo Thornton is just starting to get into the hobby. Sunil Taneja has moved here from New York and wants to join the club. First, Walt thanked Andy Finizio, on behalf of the club, for putting together October Fest. Don Gray’s article in the newsletter on the October Fest event was great. Andy Kane manned the grill and cooked excellent food, as usual. Jim McDaniel did a good job of announcing. Kim and the rest of the McDaniel family pitched in, as they always do, and helped make October Fest a success. Thanks to all who helped out with the final event of the season. Michele Adams gave a short report on her class project, which is an interactive CD ROM of DCRC. She is winding up acquisition and about to start the programming phase of the project. She is still looking for some pictures and video for the CD, so if you have anything, please get in touch. Walt finished up his opening remarks by announcing that elections for three open positions on the DCRC Board of di-rectors will be held tonight, in accordance with the constitu-tion and by-laws. Reports: Community& PR / County Liaison: Jim McDaniel reported that today was the first day of the managed deer hunt by the county.

Don Sassaman was at the field today while the hunt was going on. He remarked that no one ever saw any of the hunters until they brought the deer carcasses to the edge of the field. The gunshots sounded like cannon going off and they bagged seven deer. The gate procedure is working very well. Next Jim reported that the astronomy group has been hooked up with Park and Planning to see about using the field as a place for celestial observation. Park & Planning came to DCRC asking if we had any objections, and we re-plied that we have just a few more questions. Sound & Safety: Jeff Mervis asked the members to continue to be safe and stay aware. Walt thanked Jeff, on behalf of the club, for his three years of service on the Board. Jeff has given us much good legal advice along the way. Jeff replied he would be pleased to continue to advice to the club when needed. Flight Instruction: Michael Peizer reported we have two more training sessions scheduled for this season. Over all, we have had a good turn out of students and instructors. Sev-eral students have been certified to fly. Membership & Newsletter: Andy Kane reported 243 mem-bers for 2004. The newsletter continues on. Old Business: Don Sassaman asked Kevin Jackson about broadband over power lines which will be implemented soon in our area. Specifically, he wanted to know what radio inter-ference issues might crop up. Kevin said he did not know. He does know the ham radio community is very concerned about the issue and they are making their concerns known to the FCC in a very vocal manner. Kevin hopes the FCC will stay on top of the situation.

The meeting was called to order by president Walt Gallaugher in his home at 7:45 PM. In attendance were Jim McDaniel, Andy Kane, Walt Gallaugher, Allan Hoffman, Kevin Jackson, Scott Davies, Mike Dooley, and Michael Peizer. Walt opened the proceedings by calling for the election of the next club president. Jim McDaniel nominated Walt Gal-laugher for another term. Michael Peizer seconded the mo-tion. The vote was unanimous in favor. Walt said he would be pleased to serve as president for another year. Allan nominated Kevin Jackson for the office of vice president. Mike Dooley seconded the motion. Once again, the vote was unanimous in favor. Walt recommended that the current officers remain in their respective positions and Nir Schweizer, DCRC’s newest Board member, take over sound and safety. After some dis-cussion concerning Nir’s work schedule, the Board agreed with Walt about appointing Nir head of sound and safety. From prior discussion earlier in the evening the Board de-cided that Kevin Jackson, Scott Davies and one regular club member should comprise a nominating committee, which will seek out likely members to fill Board positions as they open up. The committee will approach likely candidates and at-tempt to secure their cooperation to be Board members and then nominate them to serve on the Board. Of course, any club member can nominate a candidate in accordance with the constitution and by-laws. The vision behind the nominat-ing committee is to seek out individuals who might bring new ideas to the club and encourage them to participate by run-ning for office. It is hoped that this might bring in some “new blood” and increase the level of participation in DCRC. Next, Walt opened the floor for nominations for Treasurer, Recording Secretary and Membership Secretary. Kevin Jackson nominated Scott Davies to continue as Treasurer. Michael Peizer seconded the nomination. The vote was unanimous in favor. Jim McDaniel nominated Michael Peizer to continue in the position of recording secretary. Scott Davies seconded the nomination. The vote was unanimous in favor. Scott Davies nominated Andy Kane to serve as member-ship secretary for another year. Kevin Jackson seconded the nomination. The vote was unanimous in favor. Next, Walt made appointments to the various ongoing committees. Andy Finizio was appointed to head the Events committee. Mike Dooley was appointed to head up Field maintenance. Andy Kane was appointed newsletter editor. Jim McDaniel was appointed to head Community & Public Relations/County Liaison. Michael Peizer was appointed to head Flight Training. Kevin Jackson was appointed Web-master. Allan Hoffman was appointed to lead the Awards and Field Improvement Committees. Lastly, Kevin Jackson was chosen to head up head the Nominating Committee, as-sisted by Scott Davies. Walt instructed Andy Kane to revise the front page of the newsletter to reflect any changed and new committee assignments. Andy said he would volunteer to do the sound and safety reports for Nir at Friday meetings. Reports:

Awards & Field Improvement: Allan updated the Board on the removal of the old container from the field. He is continu-ing to work with the individual who wants it to get it removed. Allan will get the helicopter people the materials necessary for them to paint the new shed on the helicopter side of the field. Allan believes the consideration of a special recognition award should be tabled for now. He does not want to rush to judgment on that issue. He asked the Board to think about possible award presentations for the spring. Community & PR / County Liaison: Jim reported the astron-omy club is working with Park and Planning on the preliminar-ies and DCRC will be contacted when it is time for the next step. Webmaster: Kevin reported that password protection is now operative on the website for the electronic version of the club newsletter. Only the current year’s issues will be password protected. The other issues are open to everyone. Jim re-marked that it’s a good idea. Kevin moved that, next year we put the electronic newsletter behind a secure web page. Scott seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous in fa-vor of the motion. The password protection generated several other scenar-ios, which were discussed. For example, the combination of the gate lock could be changed every year and certified pilots could retrieve the new combination from the secure area on the website. The uses of a secure area on the website will be studied. Field Maintenance: Jim McDaniel notified Mike Dooley that the windows of the shed had been knocked out. Apparently, someone had broken into the shed. It had been ransacked, but nothing was taken. One of the doors had been slightly damaged by someone trying to kick their way out. Nothing of real value is stored in the shed. The windows and door have been repaired temporarily, and the shed is secure. Mike will see to permanent repairs as soon as possible. Flight Instruction: Michael Peizer that there is a managed deer hunt scheduled for the last flight instruction day. He is inclined to change the date of the last flight instruction ses-sion. . The Board recommended the last session be re-scheduled or cancelled. Michael said he would check for al-ternate dates and let Kevin know so he can note the change on the web site. Treasurer: Scott Davies said he and Kevin audit the books before the end of the month. One of the CD’s is coming due. Old Business: Kevin mentioned the Blue Crab Boat Club is up and running. They plan to post the rules and regulations on a sign. Scott reminded all those present of the need to update the club’s inventory. New Business: Allan Hoffman moved to approve the 2004-2005 budget, as written. Kevin seconded the motion. The vote to approve the budget was unanimous. Walt thanked Jim for helping with the new budget. He thanked Scott for his help as well. Walt expressed his appreciation to everyone for volunteer-ing for the committees and congratulated those new to the Board. The meeting was adjourned at 9:26 PM.~

and scratch builder of one-of-a-kind non-scale models. He has had at least one of his designs and a novel construction method for foam-cored wings published in Radio Controlled Modeler magazine. This next photo shows Ron standing with his latest design. I think this is Ron’s first electric design. The model has a 44-inch wingspan and is equipped with a ducted fan using a Speed 480 motor. A three-cell 1500 mAh LiPo battery pack rounds out the power system. Ron is using a Multiplex transmitter and a FMA receiver.

Another club member who occasion-ally designs and builds his own models is Alfonso (Al) Rettig. The last photo shows him holding one of his electric-powered models, which turns out to be an ARF! Shame on you Al. The model is from Czechoslovakia and features a fiberglass fuselage with built-up film-covered wings and tail surfaces. Al is us-ing an AXI brushless motor turning a 6x3 folding prop. Three 1200 mAh LiPo’s round out the power equipment. He is using a Hitec Eclipse radio. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

sent me a couple of photographs (see below), one of the model in bare bones

and ready for covering and another of the finished project. The model has a wingspan of 60 inches and weighs 4 ¼

lbs. It is powered by a Mega brushless motor with ten CP-1700 NiCad cells turning an APC 13 or 14x10E prop. The engine cowl is vacuum-formed plastic made using Roy’s mold and Kevin Jackson’s super vacuum ma-chine. The third photo was taken at the

field the day the model was to make it’s maiden flight, which had to be delayed to obtain the proper prop. Perhaps he will bring it to show at a future club meeting. Ron Bozzonetti is a prolific designer

THE GOOD

STUFF BY DON GRAY

Since the time change last month the sun sets around 5 PM, which makes it difficult for those of you that still work for a living to get out during the week. Perhaps that’s why more people are starting to come out to fly on the weekends. The field was re-cently reseeded which should help fill in those areas in the pits that see most of the traffic during the summer. The trash collection contractor has been doing a good job in empting the trash containers, so lets do our part by pick-ing up any trash we see laying on the ground and placing it in the containers. Several of us have noticed the amount of dust that’s created from vehicles driving too fast on the gravel road. So it would be appreciated if everyone would keep their speed down to around 15 mph when approaching or leaving the parking area. In this age of almost-ready-to-fly (ARF) models, the number of individu-als actually building (not just assem-bling) models from either kits or plans has been decreasing over the last sev-eral years. And those who still design and scratch build are almost becoming extinct. So it’s nice to see that we still have some DCRC members who en-joy doing both. Roy Day is one of those individuals who enjoy designing and scratch build-

ing. I can’t recall ever seeing him with an ARF. Roy recently completed a Cessna 195 he designed and built. He
