Dear Friends of Molloy College:

Welcome to the 2020 Molloy Gala, a Livestream Event, and a first for the College. Tonight, we gather together to support student scholarships and are delighted to pay tribute to two outstanding individuals: Wayne and Karen Lipton.

It is an honor to recognize Wayne and Karen Lipton as our Lifetime Achievement honorees. Wayne is a successful businessman, musician, and active member of the Rockville Centre

community. For the past fifteen years, he has served as CEO and Managing Partner of Concierge Choice Physicians LLC, a company that he founded, headquartered in Rockville Centre. An accomplished musician as a cellist and conductor, Wayne is dedicated to the Rockville Centre community where he and his wife, Karen, have lived for forty years.

Karen has always supported their community, their temple, education, the arts, and healthcare. Locally, that support has been focused on Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital, Molloy College, the South Shore Symphony, and the Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts. Both Karen and Wayne are extremely grateful that the Guild and the Symphony have a home at the Madison Theater.

We are also delighted to celebrate the many alumni and community leaders who have been on the frontlines fighting against our recent pandemic. We recognize all those that invest in learning and help to carry our mission forward, thereby impacting countless lives in immeasurable ways.

I would also like to extend my appreciation to the event Co-Chairs, Sal Ciampo and Laura Farahani, as well as the gala committee for their time and effort in coordinating tonight’s event and introducing us to new friends.

On behalf of the students, I want to thank you for your generosity that will allow us to continue to provide much needed scholarship funds.

Sincerely,

James P. Lentini, DMAPresident

Friends of Molloy College,

On behalf of the Molloy College Board of Trustees I welcome you to the 2020 Molloy College Galathon as we gather, albeit virtually, to celebrate the mission of Molloy College.

Tonight we honor those members of our alumni and community who have worked tirelessly and selflessly during the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent the spread of the virus, to heal those afflicted

with the virus, and to comfort those who have lost family and friends to the virus. Their dedication and commitment provides inspiration to all of us during these difficult times.

We also honor Wayne and Karen Lipton as recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award. Wayne, a former Trustee of the Village of Rockville Centre, is an accomplished musician and a successful businessman, while Karen, the former President of the Rockville Centre Education Foundation, is a Nassau County Senior Assistant District Attorney. Together, they have enriched our community in countless ways, including in particular education and the performing arts.

Finally, I am grateful for the efforts of the Gala co-chairs, Trustees Salvatore Ciampo and Laura Farahani, who, working with the dedicated Gala Committee and advancement team, have made the Galathon a success, allowing the College to provide valuable scholarship funds to deserving students. I am equally grateful to you for your support for this important

undertaking, and for your virtual attendance tonight. I hope you enjoy the program.

Sincerely,

John P. McEntee

Dear Friends of Molloy College,

It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I welcome you to this newly formatted Molloy Galathon 2020.

It is my great honor to serve as one of the two co-chairs of the Mol-loy Galathon this year. I am proud to be able to serve with my ter-rific co-chair, Laura Farahani. I would like to acknowledge the great

work done by our wonderful Gala Committee, especially this year utilizing this fabulous new del ivery platform, which was so ably guided by the Molloy Advancement Team, Ed Thompson, Angela Zimmerman, Cynthia Costanzo Metzger. and Angelo Fraboni. These individuals and so many others have worked tirelessly to make this night a great success.

If there is one thing you take away from this evening’s event, I hope it would be the greatsatisfaction and knowledge that your efforts directly support scholarships for Molloy stu-dents. Know that by your generosity this evening, you have changed the lives of our students for the better in ways you cannot imagine. Not only I, but the entire Molloy community, are eternally grateful to you.

It gives me great joy to congratulate this evening’s honorees Wayne and Karen Lipton receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. Also let me celebrate all those who in these COVID times are “Success in Action”, especially our students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Please allow me to express my sincere thanks to all the friends and benefactors of Molloy College for your generosity this evening. Your support for Molloy College scholarships will allow the Molloy College tradition to continue and flourish, especially in these most unusual times.

May God keep us all safe and continue to bless Molloy College, you and your family.

Gratefully,

Salvatore P CiampoCo-chair

Page 13: OUR ALUMNI FIRST RESPONDERS · 2020. 11. 25. · Friends of Molloy College, On behalf of the Molloy College Board of Trustees I welcome you to the 2020 Molloy College Galathon as

Dear Friends of Molloy College,

We want to first and foremost thank you.

In a year that has been like no other we want to extend our gratitude that you are part of this amazing Molloy community. If we are welcoming you for the first time, be assured the Molloy four pillars are not just words on paper. Our longtime supporters, students, staff, faculty, and alumni we appreciate your return and hope you continue to feel the love and concern the Molloy family has to offer.

This year our Gala is “Celebrating Success in Action”. Our students and alumni are and always have been on the frontlines, fighting to keep our community healthy and live the Molloy values in their everyday work. Those who are in hospitals and healthcare settings are the most front and center, but the many others in the Molloy family who are educators, social workers, faculty, and business leaders have been on the front lines too. They are all striving to help pull our communities through this crisis with the care and compassion Molloy is known for.

We ask for your support during these trying times to fund our student scholarships. Our students need you now more than ever; your generosity can mean the difference in their ability to continue their education. The donations received go directly to student scholarships.

This year it is our great pleasure to honor Wayne and Karen Lipton as Lifetime Achievement honorees. They truly embody the community service we strive to inspire at Molloy. Wayne and Karen support the broader Rockville Centre community through their work and philanthropy. They each have a special and passionate dedication to the arts, particularly the South Shore Symphony, the Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts, and our own Madison Theatre. We are grateful for their continued support.

What a year to welcome to our new President, James P. Lentini, DMA. It has been incredible to watch his leadership at such a critical juncture. We welcome Jim and his entire family and look forward to his thoughtful expertise through better times to come.

I want to say a special thank you to my co-chair Salvatore Ciampo and the dedicated Gala Committee in their very creative reinvention of our event and their ability to hold our hands through the technical challenges that came with it. Ed Thompson, Angela Zimmerman, Cynthia Costanzo Metzger, and the entire Advancement Office have really gone above and beyond in addition to Angelo Fraboni and the professionals at the Madison Theatre. Thank you for all your support.

Most sincerely,

Laura FarahaniGala Co-Chair

to the community. The volunteer orchestra, comprised of top musicians from all over Long Island, has performed regularly at the Madison Theatre ever since including shows with Keith Emerson, Judy Collins, the Cap 21 students as well as live performances of the Nutcracker Ballet, and four major Opera Productions. The orchestra collaborates with professionals and students in many musical productions and looks forward to doing so for many years to come.

Wayne has been married to Karen for 43 years. They raised three children, Adam Lipton who passed away this year, Sarah Lipton Douglass, Senior Director of Marketing for Premium Portfolio for Marriott Corporation, and Alex Lipton, Counsel, Unite Us Corporation. They have one grandchild, Liam Douglass and another on the way.

Karen Lipton

Raised in Queens, Karen earned her BA from Hofstra (’76) and her JD from Hofstra Law School (’79). She served as an Assistant District Attorney under the Hon. Denis Dillon for several years before opting for an 18-year maternity leave to have and raise her three children.

During those years, she was active in in the Parent-Teacher Association Council and Special Education Parent-Teacher Association for Rockville Centre Schools. She was honored with the Jenkins Memorial Award along with a lifetime membership in the PTA. Karen was also a board member and President of the Rockville Centre Education Foundation, which is dedicated to enhancing the quality of public education by securing and providing financial resources for school enrichment. She co-chaired the Foundation’s fundraising efforts for a decade.

Karen returned to the Office of the District Attorney in 2001 and had the honor of serving under the Hon. Kathleen Rice and, more recently, as a Senior Assistant District Attorney for the Hon. Madeline Singas.

Karen and her husband of 43 years, Wayne Lipton, have always supported their community, their temple, education, the arts, and healthcare. Locally, that support has been focused on Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital, Molloy College, The South Shore Symphony and the Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts. She is very grateful that the Guild and the Symphony has a home at the Madison Theater and for the collaboration enjoyed with its director Angelo Fraboni.

Karen’s connection to Molloy College is particularly serendipitous. Molloy College was founded in 1955 by the Dominican Sisters of Amityville. Her Aunt, Sister Claire Kalbacher, OP, twin sister of her Dad, the late Kenneth Kalbacher, is a retired Dominican nun residing with the Sisters of St. Dominic in Amityville. Now 97, Aunt Claire is greatly admired and valued by Karen and her family for modeling a life of grace, learning, teaching, and always contributing to the common good. Karen is honored to be recognized by such a venerable institution as Molloy College.

MELISSA MANCHESTER

Let’s hear it for the boys! More than 25 years af-ter Melissa Manchester released Tribute, her 1989 album that hon-ored the great female

singers who influenced her, she turns the tables with The Fellas, a radiant encomium to the men, including Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé, Tony Bennett and Dean Martin, and the iconic songs they made famous.

Singing with a verve and emotional vul-nerability that immediately captivates, the Grammy winner inventively reimagines these be-loved standards. She turns “Chances Are” into a sly bossa nova and scats with seemingly impossible ease on “Love Is Just Around The Corner,” while bringing an understated urgen-cy to “Night and Day.”

Many of these tunes embedded them-selves into Manchester’s musical DNA while she was growing up on New York City’s Up-per West Side. “These were the artists and songs that were on the radio as my family ate dinner,” she says. “I am deeply famil-iar with this world.” Indeed, Manchester brings a nu-anced un-derstanding to the songs’ delicate phrasing and lyrical construc-tion that would baffle lesser singers.

Manchester’s 21st album opens with a rambunctious, horn-filled version of “Ain’t That A Kick In the Head” that swings exuber-ant-ly from the rafters. “I wanted to invite the audience in, right away, to what the album and song was going to feel like. When the whole band yells out ‘Beautiful!,’ it’s so indica-tive of a bygone era when you’d hear a band chime in.”

“The band” is the 40-piece Blue Note Or-chestra, a collection of students, alumni and faculty from Citrus College, the suburban Los Angeles university where Manchester is an honorary artist in residence.

The Fellas expands her relationship with The Blue Note Orches-tra and her co-pro-ducer/Citrus College Dean of Visual and Per-forming Arts Robert Slack, which launched her 2015 album of originals, You Gotta Love the

Life. “I’ve been waiting to create the coda to Tribute with the men, and this showed up as a mag-nificent gift when Bob Slack asked me if I had a project in my mind that could use their orchestra,” says Manchester of the crowd-funded album. “It’s been so thrilling. The stu-dents are trained to be not only pro musicians, but they are given real life lessons,” she con-tinues. “They show up ready to be part of an adventure. Their eyes are so bright. It’s serious fun.”

Arrangers Peter Hume, Terry Wollman, Doug Walter and (Citrus alum) David Catalan created spellbinding orchestrations that pay homage to the originals, while crafting wholly new works of art. For example, Hume’s work on “Night and Day” spans Sinatra’s many dif-ferent interpretations of the Cole Porter clas-sic, from the quiet hush of an early rendition to a swinging 1957 take. “We cover decades in that one arrangement,” Manchester says.

Though Manchester only met a few of the men she pays homage to (both Mathis and Tormé recorded songs penned by Manches-ter), she didn’t need to know them personally to admire them. “I’ve loved these people from afar, which is the best way be-cause all you are adoring is their art,” she says. “I just wanted to send them this love letter.”

Primarily a solo album, Manchester did re-cruit one very special fella to join her on The Fellas: Barry Manilow duets with Man-chester on a jubilant “For Me and My Gal,” a tribute to Gene Kelly and Judy Garland, who performed the 1942 movie’s title track. “Silver screen musicals could have their own album by me,” Manchester says. “So much of my life always goes back to Judy Garland. She’s always with me and with Barry.” Manilow and Manchester met 40 years ago when they were young jin-gle singers trying to break into show business. In fact, Manilow was responsible for introduc-ing Manchester to Bette Midler, which led to Manchester’s stint as a founding member of Midler’s back-ing singers and dancers, the Harlettes.

Manchester brings her own experience and truth to each song and, though tack-ling the music of her heroes could be daunt-ing, she was fearless. “A great song is a great song,” she says.

“These fellas captured a moment in time.

ABOUT

Page 17: OUR ALUMNI FIRST RESPONDERS · 2020. 11. 25. · Friends of Molloy College, On behalf of the Molloy College Board of Trustees I welcome you to the 2020 Molloy College Galathon as

What I bring is not a literal homage to what they’ve done, it’s my female energy and ap-preciation of their male energy. It’s like when I sang, ‘Over the Rainbow.’ How are you going to fill Judy Garland’s shoes? You’re not. You pray for that space where you take your cour-age and bravery and walk in your own shoes.”

The song that resonates most with Man-chester is “Smile,” written by Charlie Chaplin. She unerringly pays homage to Nat “King” Cole’s heartbreaking interpretation. “The lon-gevity of the song is undeniable, the poignan-cy of the message is so touching,” she says. “As a performer, a woman, a human being, you’re so frequently on the stage and people don’t know what’s going on in your life, yet you smile and keep going.”

Like many of the men she salutes on The Fellas, Manchester’s career is remarkable not only for its longevity and accomplishments, but for its versatility.

Following her time as a Harlette, Man-chester’s tremendously successful solo career brought her critical and commercial acclaim. The “Midnight Blue” singer received her first Grammy nomination for Best Pop Female Vo-cal Performance in 1979 for the Peter Allen/Carole Bayer Sager-penned “Don’t Cry Out Loud,” winning the Grammy in that category four years later for “You Should Hear How She Talks About You.” Manchester has also had her songs recorded by Barbra Streisand, Ro-berta Flack, Dusty Springfield, Alison Krauss, Kenny Loggins and many others. Two songs she performed, “Through The Eyes Of Love” and “The Promise,” were nominated for Oscars in the same year. She has written tunes for several other films including The Great Mouse Detective, Lady and the Tramp II, Dirty Girl, and Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls.

She has appeared on both the large (For The Boys) and small (Blossom) screen, as well as the stage, and she co-created (with lyricist Sharon Vaughn and playwright Rupert Holmes) the musical theatre sensation Sweet Potato Queens, which premiered at TUTS in Houston in 2016.

With The Fellas, Manchester completes a journey that began more than a quarter cen-tury ago, while also creating an exciting new chapter for her and her fans.

And she’s already thinking ahead

to a possible second volume. “With all of these singers, for every song I chose, there were 20 more I could have cho-sen,” she says. “There’s so much music to mine. I’m happy to be my fans’ guide.”

VANEESE THOMAS

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Vaneese is the daughter of Rufus Thomas, whose legend-ary career as a musician and entertainer be-gan in Vaudeville and spanned more than half a century in rhythm-and-blues recording and radio. Her older siblings are the hit recording artist “Memphis Queen” Carla Thomas and the highly respected keyboardist and producer, Marvell Thomas.

Embracing this remarkable musical lega-cy, Vaneese carries forward the rich heritage of Memphis soul and R&B, a music that has touched several generations and crossed many divides. At the same time she has com-bined all the influences of her background and experience – R & B, gospel, blues, and jazz – to cultivate a soul-stirring style that’s all her own.

Highly regarded within the music indus-try, Vaneese’s talents as a singer, songwriter, producer, and actor have made her a sought-after solo performer as well as a first-call vo-calist for projects by other top-name artists. She has worked with the renowned recording producer Phil Ramone and has sung with an astonishing array of internationally known performers including Luciano Pavarotti, Sting, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Eric Clapton, Dr. John and numerous others.

• and soul music festivals in Porretta, Narni, and Perugia, Italy.

Geffen Records released Vaneese’s first major recording in 1987. The self-titled album included the Top Ten R & B hit “Let’s Talk it Over.” In 1999 Vaneese used her own Peaceful Waters Music label to release When My Back’s Against The Wall, a gospel crossover hailed by Billboard Magazine as “a small label mas-terpiece that begs for attention from savvy majors.” Following a few years later was A Woman’s Love, which combined R & B and silky, smooth-jazz vocals. Vaneese then re-leased Soul Sister Vol. One, a collection of semi-nal soul classics. The CD, and the live show Vaneese has created from it, both pay tribute to some of the original soul sisters and honor the historical value of this irrepressible music.
