Excellence in ActionFocusing on purposeful skill development to maximize student learning and success…

What is Excellence in Action?Excellence in Action is an initiative to support purposeful engagement with the Carolina community. EIA provides the tools and support students need to identify meaningful opportunities, track experiences, and demonstrate skill development. The framework supports students in achieving a core set of 21st century skills, a deeper understanding of the University and themselves, and clear language to market skills developed through curricular and co-curricular engagement at Carolina.

MissionExcellence in Action is a framework designed to help students track and reflect on meaningful experiences to foster their learning and success in and after Carolina.

Goals

1. To facilitate intentional student engagement across the University to support the development of Dynamic Learning, Honor, Personal Responsibility, and Community Engagement.

2. To engage students in the process of building a co-curricular transcript to organize, contextualize, and make meaning of diverse learning experiences.

3. To help students integrate knowledge and skills in the fulfillment of responsibilities and the realization of current and future endeavors.

4. To partner with students as leaders to translate programmatic engagement into a demonstration of competency development in their personal and professional lives.

The fortitude, courage, and character to stand by personal and community principles. The willingness to sacrifice short term personal gain for the good of long term goals and the good of the community. Holding oneself to congruency between one’s values and everyday actions and interactions. Exemplifies ethics, integrity, fairness and respect for others.

The ownership of one’s actions and commitments through ongoing reflection and engagement with others, in order to develop self-awareness, interpersonal skills, wellness, and resiliency. This process allows one to achieve authenticity, balance, and a sense of purpose, which provides a path towards a congruent wholehearted life.

The commitment of an individual to develop cross-cultural perspectives. To actively engage in local and global communities as a result of a sense of responsibility.

connectcarolina: QUICK REFERENCE FOR REGISTRATION

Logging in to ConnectCarolina

1. Go to connectcarolina.unc.edu

2. Click on the Login to ConnectCarolina Student Center link.

3. Log in with your Onyen and password.***

Note: ConnectCarolina is also on mobile. Go to mobile.unc.edu for more information on CarolinaGO. For the best first-time registration experience, the desktop version of ConnectCarolina is recommended.

Schedule Planner

As a best practice, we recommend utilizing the Schedule Planner class search tool for enrollment during New Student Orientation registration sessions. This will allow you to view sections of classes with seats reserved for your specific registration session.

1. Access Schedule Planner from your main Student Center page, by clicking the Schedule Planner link on the left side.

***If this does not work, or if you’ve forgotten your password, you can go to itsapps.unc.edu/improv and click on the Reset Lost or Forgotten Password link under Onyen Password Management.

Note: In June, you will notice enhancements to your ConnectCarolina Student Center that may slightly change the look of the screenshots shown on these Registration and Tar Heel Tracker pages. Therefore, these pages may look different when you are getting ready to enroll. Please refer to registrar.unc.edu/registration/registration-guide throughout the summer for up-to-date information, and remember to check this website before your enrollment date so you are prepared when your enrollment appointment starts. The University Registrar’s Office provides enrollment support during orientation registration sessions and contact information can be found at registrar.unc.edu/registration/registration-support.

2. Use the button to launch Schedule Planner. Your main Student Center page will remain open in another window. Note: You will need to allow pop-ups from this site.

3. Once in Schedule Planner, note the various search options. Select Course Status of Open & Full w/ Waitlist Open to look for sections that either have seats available or have waitlist seats available.

4. Add classes by subject and course number by selecting both from the drop-down lists, and then review the course information and click to see the courses populate to the right.

5. Note that you can select courses by Course Attribute to narrow down your search for courses that will fulfill general education requirements.

6. Once you have selected courses, click the icon to go back to the main Schedule Planner page and generate potential schedules by leaving all courses selected and clicking the option at the bottom of the page, which will return schedules matching your criteria.

7. Click View on schedules to see potential options, scrolling through the Schedules by clicking the arrows to the left and right.

8. Lock in classes (or class/related recitation combinations) by clicking the padlock.

9. Important! Be sure to click the information icon to view reserve capacities (restrictions) on classes as well as notes and any consent required to enroll. If selecting a class with seats being held for New Student Orientation, be sure to select a section that has seats available for your specific registration session. See the Reserve Caps section to ensure your registration session matches up to open seats. In this example 0 of 10 means that there are still 10 open seats per group. Once that changes to 10 of 10 it will mean that those seats are all taken and you should continue looking for a different section of the class or a different class.

10. When done, click the button.

11. Click OK to be transferred to your Shopping Cart.

12. Next, click Course Enrollment from this page:

13. From Plan > Shopping Cart, click the button and your classes from Schedule Planner will populate your Shopping Cart.

Searching for Classes

Note: Utilizing Schedule Planner is recommended for beginning your schedule and reviewing reserve capacities specific to sections with seats being held for your registration session. You may also utilize the Class Search from your Shopping Cart for additional classes.

1. From the Student Center home page, click the enrollment shopping cart link.

2. Click the Class Search button under the Find Classes area.

3. Click the search button to go to the Class Search page.

4. Uncheck the checkbox to view all sections of the class, even if they are currently closed.

5. Enter the Course Subject and the Course Number (if known). If the Course Subject is not known, click the green button for a listing of subjects. If the Course Number is not known, click the Course Number drop down to try using the less than or equal to option, or trying using Additional Search Criteria.

6. Click the SEARCH button to perform the search.

7. From the Search Results page, review the search results, including the class notes. If the class status shows a green circle , the class has open seats. If the status shows a blue square , the class is full without a waitlist option. If the status shows a yellow triangle , the class has a waitlist.

Note: When using the Class Search from your Shopping Cart, it is important to view any class notes that are placed on a class, as they may contain information on restrictions for the class or additional information. Best practice is to review classes in Schedule Planner to see the reserve capacity information.

To view the class notes, click on the Section link for the class (ex: ), and look under the Class Notes heading.

There are additional features available on the Search for Classes page that may be helpful when looking for classes. For example, the Search By Class Attribute section will allow you to search for classes that fulfill General Education requirements. The Additional Search Criteria section can be used to look for classes that meet on certain days/times and will help you narrow down your results if you get an error message that your search exceeded the maximum limit.

When looking at class search results, be sure to click the link to see all available sections.

Safety at Carolina: A Shared Responsibility

Carolina is committed to campus safety. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs a staff of sworn officers that hold the same authority as city police officers and sheriff’s deputies, a detective team, bike patrols, a community response unit that focuses on issues such as larceny reduction and pedestrian safety, a silent witness program, and mutual aid agreements with off-campus law enforcement agencies.

Visit the DPS website at dps.unc.edu for campus call box information and locations, campus lighted corridor pedestrian-friendly map, personal safety classes, safety tips, resources for reporting crimes, and crime reports and surveys.

Tar Heel Campus Safety Expectations and Responsibilities

Campus safety is a shared responsibility. Every student has a role in making UNC-CH a safe campus community.

Use good judgment and trust your instincts. Never assume that just because a friend may know someone that you are safe with that person. If something does not feel safe, it probably is not. When in doubt, call 9-1-1.

Secure your valuables. Avoid leaving backpacks, laptops, and personal items unattended. Make sure your electronics (cell phones, computers, and tablets) are equipped with a security app that can be downloaded. Several different apps, available free of charge, can assist with recovering stolen property.

Be careful online. Never share passwords associated with your ONYEN, Facebook, etc. Avoid posting and sharing personal information that could be used to identify you or locate you offline. Report any unwanted or inappropriate communications to the Department of Public Safety (DPS). Remember that anything you send anyone electronically can be shared. Once it’s on the internet, there’s no taking it back.

Think before you drink. Alcohol impairs decision-making skills. People under the influence often take risks a sober person would not. Impaired people are more likely to become crime victims. Never drink and drive, accept a ride from anyone under the influence, or walk home alone. Call a cab or a friend or ride

Be aware of your surroundings and never walk alone at night. Bike or jog during the day, vary your route, and go with a friend. Avoid headphones, which can impede awareness. At night, walk with a group, stay on the lighted path, and walk briskly. Never stay in one spot if you feel you are being followed. If anyone approaches you that makes you feel uncomfortable, keep walking and call 9-1-1.

Pay attention coming home and have your key ready. Before you reach the door, have your key or flex pass ready. On an elevator, stand near the control panel and use the emergency alarm button if necessary. Note the condition of your home as you approach and before entering. If something appears out of the ordinary, leave immediately and call 9-1-1.

Do not let unaccompanied non-residents (tailgaters) into the residence halls. Outside doors of campus residence halls are locked 24 hours a day to keep out people who do not belong. Do not defeat this safety measure by holding the door open for the person behind you (tailgating). Keep your residence secure at all times. Never leave your residence unsecured at any time.

At Carolina, we are committed to providing the safest campus environment we can for our entire campus community.

alert carolina: A SAFETY

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN FOR THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY

The Alert Carolina safety awareness campaign (alertcarolina.unc.edu) is an important part of that commitment. The campaign educates the campus about what to do in an emergency and where to find safety-related resources. A key part of Alert Carolina involves having students, faculty, and staff with cell phones that have text message capability sign up for emergency alerts.

The University will inform the campus as quickly as possible when an emergency happens or we learn of a threat affecting the safety and welfare of the campus community. Alert Carolina is the best source for current information before, during, and after an emergency. It helps people know what to do, who to contact for help, and where to find information and resources.

Remember, though, that it may take time in an emergency for authorities to investigate a situation, verify the facts, and provide the campus with instructions. People should not call 911 or the University’s Department of Public Safety for general information. The Alert Carolina website (alertcarolina.unc.edu) will provide new details as quickly as possible.

Emergency Sirens and Text Messages

Emergency sirens and text messaging allow the University to share information quickly. The sirens are designed primarily to be heard by people outside on campus, not in buildings or cars, and text messages are an effective way to reach people inside quickly.

The sirens will only sound for a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to health or safety—or during a test. When the sirens sound, other than during a test, people should be prepared to go inside immediately. The sirens also will broadcast brief announcements with instructions. When the threat is over, the sirens will sound with a different tone and an “all clear” message.

In an emergency, the University also will send a text message alert to students, faculty, and staff who have registered the numbers of cell phones with text message capability in the online campus directory.

If you See Something, Say Something. Share your safety concerns with a Resident Advisor (RA), with DPS, or with someone you can trust. When in doubt, call 9-1-1. Always file a report with DPS if a crime has occurred.

Use Campus Safety resources. Emergency Call Boxes are located across campus on

black poles with blue lights on top. University police respond to the call box location as soon as the call box is activated, even if you do not speak. Visit dps.unc.edu for more information.

SafeWalk provides a male-female pair of DPS-trained student walkers to accompany students 11:00 PM – 3:00AM, Sunday – Thursday. Students may request a walk by calling 919-962-SAFE (7233) or submitting a ticket online at safewalk.unc.edu. SafeWalk serves all on-campus locations, Granville Towers, and all fraternity and sorority houses. Coverage also extends to off-campus locations—visit safewalk.unc.edu for details.

UNC Rave Guardian Campus Safety App turns your phone into a personal safety device thanks to a joint program between Student Affairs and the

Department of Public Safety. Download the FREE Rave Guardian safety app (compatible with Apple and Android devices) to check in with family, friends, the UNC Department of Public Safety, or others you trust to help you stay safe both on and off campus. Just visit raveguardian.unc.edu for details.

Mobile UNC App (M.unc.edu) is a University-wide mobile application initiative that delivers useful, useable mobile-appropriate content about the Carolina Community which can be accessed anywhere in the world.

Point-to-Point (P2P) Express Service and Demand Service is free to students during late evening hours. Visit move.unc.edu/p2p to access a map and service schedule.

Chapel Hill Transit is free to all passengers. Visit nextbus.com to see when the next bus will arrive and reduce your outside wait time. Safe Ride Routes are also offered to serve parts of campus, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro. Visit chtransit.org for more information.

Emergency Notification System

University officials continually evaluate and refine the most effective ways to communicate with the campus community. The University uses four types of notifications based on criteria in the Alert Carolina System Protocols: Emergency Warnings, Timely Warnings, and Informational and Adverse Weather Messages. Information, including possible situations for each notification, is included on the Alert Carolina website (alertcarolina.unc.edu).

An Emergency Warning is issued if there is a significant emergency or immediate threat to the health or safety of people on campus. The emergency sirens will sound to alert people that they need to act now, followed by a text message.

A Timely Warning is issued when it’s necessary to tell people to be cautious because of a continuing danger affecting the campus community and notification will not compromise law enforcement efforts. The University will send a text message, but the emergency sirens will not sound.

An Informational Message is issued to advise people to be aware of a particular situation that is not an emergency and does not pose an immediate or continuing threat to the campus community. The University will send a campus-wide email message.

An Adverse Weather Message is issued when a tornado watch or severe thunderstorm warning is issued by the National Weather Service for Orange County, or when other circumstances exist that do not represent an immediate threat to health or safety, but action may enable people to protect themselves and/or their property. The University will send a campus-wide email message as well as other communications when needed.

Other Ways to Communicate Key Information

The University also will communicate by campus email, the Adverse Weather and Emergency Phone Line for recorded information (919-843-1234), the University Access Channel (Chapel Hill Time Warner Cable Channel 4), campus cable television channels, campus or local media, and official University Twitter and Facebook accounts (which also activate social media for the Office of New Student & Carolina Parent Programs and the Department of Public Safety).

alert carolina

Alert Carolina is the source for information in an emergency or other dangerous situation involving health and safety on the Carolina campus. The University will post safety-related announcements and updates at alertcarolina.unc.edu.

The University sends text message alerts to people who have registered their cell phone numbers in the online campus directory (see alertcarolina.unc.edu and click on Register Your Cell Phone).

Also, through the American Red Cross Safe and Well list, people can let their families know they are all right in the event of an emergency, while keeping cell phone lines open for emergency calls. To register as “safe and well” if an emergency affects Carolina, go to redcross.org/safeandwell and follow the instructions.

continuing your transition: TRANSFER STUDENT RESOURCES

Transfer students are an integral part of the culture at Carolina—bringing backgrounds and experiences that enrich the entire campus. Although transfer students are familiar with the college environment, there are similarities and differences to navigating Carolina compared to students’ previous institutions. The University offers distinct programs and opportunities designed specifically for transfer students to acclimate to the Carolina community.

Tar Heel Transfers

Tar Heel Transfers (THT), a student-run organization, gives transfer students a deeper connection to campus and each other through fun and exciting social events. Past transfer students plan events and programs to help new transfer students meet each other and get more involved with student life. For more information, visit nscpp.unc.edu and select Transfer Students.

T-Links

T-Links mentors serve as a resource for easing the transition of new transfer students. All new transfer students are assigned a T-Link mentor; be on the lookout for emails from your T-Link mentor throughout the summer months. Opportunities to meet your T-Link mentor and establish connections with other new transfer students will occur during the Week of Welcome (WOW) and early fall. T-Links will provide first-hand insight and strategies for making a smooth transition to Carolina. For more information, visit nscpp.unc.edu and select Transfer Students.

The Insider: A Transfer Student’s Guide to Carolina The Insider: A Transfer Student’s Guide to Carolina is distributed to all new transfer students at Transfer Student Orientation. The publication is specifically tailored to assist new transfer students in their transition to the diverse Carolina community. For more information, visit nscpp.unc.edu and select Transfer Students.

Transfer Student Coordinator

The Transfer Student Coordinator serves as the primary contact for transfer students at UNC and provides support to encourage the success, persistence, and graduation of transfer students.

Contact the Transfer Student Coordinator (part of Undergraduate Retention in the Office of Undergraduate Education) for additional support with getting connected on campus and finding resources to set you on a path toward student success. Visit studentsuccess.unc.edu for more information.

Tau Sigma

Tau Sigma is a national academic honor society designed to recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students. Membership is granted to students who have transferred to UNC-CH having completed at least one year at a prior institution and earned at least a 3.5 GPA during their first term at Carolina. For more information, visit nscpp.unc.edu and select Transfer Students.

Transfer United Residential Learning Program

Transfer United is a collaborative residential learning program located in Ram Village Apartments that is designed to promote a seamless academic and social transition for junior transfer community college students to Carolina. The community strives to create a bridge between the community college experience to Carolina, build a network of student peers, connect students with campus resources and support, and help facilitate students’ understanding of the academic rigor of Carolina coursework. For more information visit housing.unc.edu.

Transfer Academic Advising Resources

Academic advisors are here to help transfer students succeed. Every institution has unique policies and procedures and the Academic Advising program is available to assist transfer students’ understanding of the Carolina curriculum to help facilitate a successful academic transition.
