IFJAS 2015- a sector specific vertical

brings in Regional Treasures

IFJAS 2015

This edition of IFJAS brings in a regional flavourwith participation from primary producers, i.e.artisans and crafts persons from six regions ofIndia - North comprising J&K, Himachal Pradesh,Ladakh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan;Central covering Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh;West with Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradeshand Chattisgarh; North East with Assam,Nagaland, Arunchal Pradesh, Sikkim, Manipur,Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura; East withBengal, Jharkhand, Orissa and Bihar; and SouthIndia with Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Karnataka,Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Pondicherry and Goa.

A group of four artisans represent the beautifulKashmir valley with enticing collections in shawls, bags and textile crafts with the traditionalembroidery kashidakari. From North EasternRegion there are eleven participants specialisingin crafts like cane & bamboo jewellery, jewelleryand jewellery accessories made from paper, paddyand egg trays, silver and gold ornaments, jewellery made from stone, plastic & bone beads, handloom products like wool cotton, cottonbags, shawls, Naga jewellery craft forms innecklaces, earrings, bracelets belts, etc.

A total of sixteen exhibitors define the Easternregion's display at IFJAS with metal and Victorianjewellery, clay, dhokra, wood, terracota, paper, fish scales and jute jewellery, bamboo crafts, wooden jewellery, fashion bags made from jute& cotton, scarves & stoles. Besides, there is aselection in copper and brass jewellery.

The Western region with thirteen exhibitors havebrought in brass jewellery from Madhya Pradeshthat forms pride of place alongside stonejewellery, meenakari, glass and kundan jewellery, glass beadsed jewellery, adornments made fromcopper, white oxide and German silver, leaherbags and wallets, embroidery and crochettedgoods from Raipur and some exquisite kalamkaricraft manifestations from Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

South India is represented by artians from TamilNadu, Kerala and karnataka. Products showcasedinclude Toda shawls made by a pastoral tribe inthe Nilgiris. The embroidery, worked on cottonfabric has typical red and black stripes at a gapof six inches each. Motifs are worked by countingthe threads. The shawls adorned with todaembroidery are called Poothkuli and the stypleof embroidery is locally Pugur, which means

flower. Also on display by the Southern regionare terracotta and fashion jewellery.

India prides in being the only treasure house ofits kind with abundant variety in jewellery andtextile crafts that continue to inspire generationafter generations of designers and connoisseursof craft. While designs in solid gold jewellery ofTamil Nadu and Kerala are inspired by nature,Meenakari and Kundan styles of jewellery makinghave been influenced by the Mughal dynasty. Then there is a huge range of silver beads foundall over India, especially in Rajasthan, Gujarat,Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. Theiravailability leads to the development of the beadjewellery, popular till date. While Assamesejewellery is influenced by local flora and fauna,Manipuri jewellery-makers make use of items likeshells, animal claws, teeth and precious andsemi-precious stones.

Primary Producers & Exporters Meet

11th July: 1:00pm onwards and 12th July: 11:00am onwardsHall 8, IInd Floor, Central Function Building, India Expo Centre & Mart

This Connect Programmewould be inaugurated by

Secretary Textiles, Mr. S KPanda on 11th July, 2015, inthe presence of Mr. Samir KBiswas, DevelopmentCommissioner (Handicrafts),who would be the Guest of

Honour.

With the rising demand for new and innovativehandicraft products in the global market andoverseas buyers always seeking new productlines, it has become imperative for Indianexporters to explore options in order to offer novelassortments on a continuous basis and maintaintheir niche. On the other hand, artisans locatedin far flung corners of the country and practicingtheir local crafts, now desire to reach out toplatforms where they can perceive more demandfor their products. They are keen to fine tunetheir craft skills and see their finished productsreach a more diverse clientele so that theirlivelihood improves and their future generationsdon't abandon their heritage of craft making. So,there is a gap here and so is an urgent need tobridge this gap.

In this direction, EPCH has taken an initiative toorganize a Buyer Seller Meet where primaryproducers & exporters would meet and interact

directly. This is an opportunity for both sides andis expected to see a gathering of exporters, artisans, NGOs, SHGs & Cooperative Societies. The product range expected to be showcasedhere comprise handicrafts, gifts, fashion jewelleryand fashion accessories, decoratives, hometextiles, imitation jewellery, bags, footwear,

a connect programme to source new products fromunexplored producers
