“Imagine Your Story! ” Summer Readers

A quick reminder that all “Imagine Your Story!” summer reading journals need to be turned into the li-brary or your child’s teacher by Friday, Sept. 11th. I understand this summer’s reading program was a chal-lenge because of the virtual venue, but want to thank those of you that made an effort to attend. The key thing was taking the time to read everyday. If your child completed the journal, prizes will be given for

completed journals. Unfortunately we will not be able to celebrate our summer readers with a pizza party, thanks for your flexiblilty and support. I am hopeful that 2021 “Tails and Tales”..Stories and Animals will be a huge success!

Basecamp to Kindergarten: Loving Literacy: 1,000 Books before Kindergarten

The community library offers an excellent program designed to help pre-

pare children for Kindergarten. Now in its 6th year, 1,000 Books Before Kinder-

garten has over 30 families participating. With extra funding from Resort Tax and

the Friends of the Library, the library is able to continue to provide new re-

sources to help parents engage with their toddlers and instill a love of literacy.

Several new books appropriate for Pre-school learning, both fiction and non-

fiction, have been added to our collection this past year.

We invite you to participate in our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge. If you have not

signed up for this with your baby/toddler, stop by the library to pick up the information and binder. Ex-

perts say that children need to hear 1,000 books read aloud before they learn to read.

Banned Book Week Sept. 27th-Oct. 3rd Banned Book Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held

during the last week of September, it spotlights current and historical attempts to censor

books in libraries and schools. It brings together the entire book community — librarians,

booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared sup-

port of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox

or unpopular.

The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restriction in libraries and schools. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. The following books were the top 10 challenged books in 2019:

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Amer-

ican Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide join togeth-

er to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a

library card is the first step towards academic achievement and life-

long learning. (ALA website)

Parents what a great time to get your community library card for

your family and have access to all the resources for you and your

child(ren). Stop by during Community Library hours and fill out

your application. We hope to see you soon!

Simple Strategies for Creating Strong Readers Without a doubt, reading with children spells success for early literacy. Putting a few sim-

ple strategies into action will make a significant difference in helping children develop into good

readers and writers. Through reading aloud, providing print materials, and promoting positive

attitudes about reading and writing, you can have a powerful impact on children's literacy and

learning. A few simple tips:

•Invite your child to read with you every day.

•When reading a book where the print is large, point word by word as you read. This will

help the child learn that reading goes from left to right and understand that the word he or she

says is the word he or she sees.

•Read a child's favorite book over and over again.

•Read many stories with rhyming words and lines that repeat. Invite the child to join in on

these parts. Point, word by word, as he or she reads along with you.

•Discuss new words. For example, "This big house is called a palace. Who do you think

lives in a palace?"

•Stop and ask about the pictures and about what is happening in the story.

•Read from a variety of children's books, including fairy tales, song books, poems, and in-

formational books.

•Reading well is at the heart of all learning. By being a partner in your child’s learning,

you can make the difference for your child. Please join us as partners!

“One Book Big Sky”

The "One Book Big Sky" presentation will be

held Wednesday, Sept 15th at 6:30 in the Community

Library. Great Falls author, Jamie Ford, will discuss his

book Love and Other Consolation Prizes. There are still

books available for check-out if you would like to partici-

pate in our "One Book Big Sky" program. We hope you

can join us! We will be following CDC guidelines for 6

feet distancing and masks are required. Open to the

Public!
