4 Mounting4.1 General instructionsEach series 600 instrument consists of the actual signalconditioning instrument as well as a plug-in socket for carrierrail mounting. Because it has protection class IP 30 or IP 20,the instrument is intended to be used in switching cabinets.

4.2 Mounting informationThe plug-in socket is constructed for carrier rail mounting acc.to EN 50022. Power supply is connected to terminals 17 and18. For neighbouring series 600 signal conditioning instru-ments, it is possible to continue connection L1 and N directlyvia the supplied bridges.

Danger:The bridges must never be used with single instruments or atthe end of a row of instruments. If this rule is not heeded, thereis a danger of coming into contact with the operating voltage orcausing a short circuit.

A VEGASCAN 693 in Ex version is an auxiliary, intrinsicallysafe instrument and must not be installed in hazardous areas.

Before setup, the Ex separating chamber must be attached (asshown below) with Ex versions. Safe operation can be onlyensured if the operating instructions manual and the EU typeapproval certificate are observed. VEGASCAN 693 must notbe opened. All signal conditioning instruments are provided with differentgaps depending on type and version (mechanical coding). The plug-in socket is provided with coded pins that can beinserted to prevent accidental interchanging of the variousinstrument types. With a VEGASCAN 693 in Ex version, the supplied coded pins(type coded pin and Ex coded pin) must be inserted by theuser acc. to the below chart.

5 Electrical connection5.1 Preparing the connectionAlways observe the following safety instructions:l Connect only in the complete absence of line voltagel If overvoltage surges are expected, overvoltage arresters

should be installedTip:We recommend VEGA overvoltage arresters B61-300 (powersupply VEGASCAN 693) and B62-36G (sensor supply).

In hazardous areas you should take note of the appropriateregulations, conformity and type approval certificates of thesensors and power supply units.

The power supply can be 20 … 253 V AC, 50/60 Hz.

Power supply of VEGASCAN 693 is connected with standardcable acc. to the national installation standards.Standard two-wire cable with screening can be used forconnecting the sensors. The screening is absolutely neces-sary to ensure interference-free operation with HART sensors.Connect the cable screen on both ends to ground potential. Inthe sensor, the screen must be connected directly to theinternal ground terminal. The ground terminal outside on thesensor housing must be connected to the potential equal-isation (low impedance). If potential equalisation currents are expected, the screenconnection on the VEGASCAN 693 must be made via aceramic capacitor (e.g. 1 nF, 1500 V). The low frequencypotential equalisation currents are thus suppressed, but theprotective effect against high frequency interference signalsremains.Take note of the corresponding installation regulations for Exapplications. In particular, make sure that no potential equal-isation currents flow over the cable screen. In case ofgrounding on both sides this can be achieved by the use of acapacitor or a separate potential equalisation.

5.2 Connection stepsTip:Before the actual setup, each HART sensors must beassigned an address (see chapter "Setup"). When assigningan address, only one sensor should be connected toVEGASCAN 693. Depending on the installation location of thesensors, it can be advantageous to carry out this addressingbefore installing and connecting the sensors. This can beconveniently carried out e.g. in the workshop. You just need a24 Volt power supply as well as an indicating and adjustmentmodule PLICSCOM or the adjustment software PACTware™with VEGACONNECT.

For electrical connection, proceed as follows:1 Snap socket without VEGASCAN 693 onto the carrier rail2 Connect sensor cable to terminal 1/2 (active input) or 3/4

(passive input), provide a screening3 When using several sockets, loop the power supply by

means of bridges4 Connect power supply (switched off) to terminal 17 and 185 If necessary, connect relays or other outputs6 Insert VEGASCAN 693 into the plug-in socket and screw it

down tightlyThe electrical connection is finished. Before setting up Ex versions, make sure the Ex separatingchamber is plugged onto the left side of the housing (above thesensor terminals). The pins for type and Ex coding must alsobe inserted correctly.

Information:l On the active input (terminals 1/2), VEGASCAN 693

provides the power supply for the connected sensors.Power supply and measured value transmission arecarried out via the same two-wire cable. This operatingmode is intended for sensors without separate powersupply (sensors in two-wire version).

l On the passive input (terminals 3/4), the sensors are notpowered, only the measured value is transmitted. Thisinput is for connection of transmitters with their own,

separate power supply (sensors in four-wire version). Theconnection and operation in Ex ia is not permitted on thepassive input.

Note:VEGASCAN 693 is designed for connection of up to 15 HARTsensors (5 with Ex). Because they are accessed via differentaddresses in the HART multidrop mode, all sensors must beconnected to the same sensor input. These are eitherterminals 1/2 (active input) or terminals 3/4 (passive input).Mixed operation of active and passive input is not possible.Since this is a digital bus system, only one two-wire cableshould lead to the sensors. A distributor can then beconnected directly forward of the sensors. As an alternative, the connection cable can be looped through the second cableentry on the sensor housing.

6.2 Setup procedureSetup encompasses mainly the selection of the application, assignment of HART addresses and adjustment of measure-ment loops. Scaling the measured value to the requested sizeand unit (possibly with the application of a linearization curve),as well as setting an integration time for smoothing themeasured value, are additional setup steps. For instruments with Ethernet interface, the instrument must beprovided with the host name and IP addr./Subnet mask. Ifnecessary, the e-mail/web server can also be configured withPACTware™.VEGASCAN 693 can process measured values of severalconnected HART sensors. All measured values are trans-mitted as digital HART signals on the same cable (bus). Ananalogue 4 … 20 mA transmission is not possible. An own, unique address (address range 1-15) must be assigned first ofall to each connected sensor. This mode is also called HARTmultidrop mode. Addressing can be done directly on eachHART sensor via the respective adjustment unit or anappropriate adjustment software. As an alternative, the settingof the sensor address can be also carried out via theVEGAMET menu under "Service - Sensor address".

Note:When addresses are being assigned, only one sensor with aparticular address must be connected on the bus. If this is notthe case, the sensor cannot be accessed and it is not possibleto assign an address.

Because VEGASCAN 693 can read the measured values ofup to 15 sensors (5 with Ex), the individual sensors must beassigned to the measurement loops. After the addresses of theHART sensors are assigned, a list with the existing sensorscan be prepared and displayed. Now you can assign therequested sensor to each measurement loop. For transmission, VEGASCAN 693 must be informed whichsensor value should be used for further processing. Depend-ing on the sensor type this can be distance, pressure, interfaceor temperature. If a sensor can deliver two measured values,e.g. pressure and temperature with VEGABAR sensors, aseparate measurement loop must be assigned for each inputvariable. When HART sensors of other manufacturers areconnected, the options PV (Primary Value) and SV (SecondaryValue) will be available. The parameter to be transmitted isstated in the operating instructions manual of the respectivesensor manufacturer.

Information:Keep in mind that some settings must be carried outindividually several times, because they are specificallyrequired for each measurement loop. This applies e.g. to thesingle measurement loops, the displayed values in the displayas well as the outputs.

The unit of measurement must be selected before starting theadjustment. Depending on the connected instrument this canbe e.g. m(d), ft(d), bar, psi, °C or %.

àWith [OK] you prepare the percentage value for editing, with [->] you set the cursor to the requested position. Setthe requested percentage value with [+] and save with[OK]. The cursor jumps now to the distance value.

à Enter now the appropriate distance value in m [m(d)](corresponding to the percentage value) for the emptyvessel (e.g. distance from the sensor to the vessel bottom).

à Save the settings with [OK] and move to "Max. adjustment"with [->].

à As previously described, enter now the percentage valuefor the max. adjustment and confirm with [OK].

à Enter now the appropriate distance value in m [m(d)](corresponding to the percentage value) for the full vessel.Keep in mind that the max. level must be below the radarantenna.

à Finally save your settings with [OK], the adjustment isfinished.

To suppress fluctuation in the measured value display, e.g.caused by a turbulent product surface, an integration time canbe set. This time can be between 0 and 999 seconds. Pleasenote that the reaction time of the measurement will be longerand the sensor will react to quick changes of the measuredvalue with a corresponding delay. In general, a time of a fewseconds is sufficient to smooth the measured value display.

à Enter the requested parameter via the appropriate keysand save your settings with [OK].

A linearization is necessary for all vessels in which the vesselvolume does not increase linearly with the level, e.g. with acylindrical or spherical tank. Corresponding linearizationcurves are preprogrammed for these vessels. They representthe correlation between the level percentage and vessel

7 Setup with PACTware™7.1 Connecting the PCFor temporary connection of the PC, e.g. for parameteradjustment, the connection can be made via the interfaceconverter VEGACONNECT. The necessary I²C interface in thefront of VEGASCAN 693 is available with all instrumentversions. On the computer, connection is made via the RS232interface. If this is not available on your PC or alreadyoccupied, it is also possible to use a USB - RS232 adapter (e.g. article no. 2.26900).

Note:Also for communication with the sensor, connection mustalways be made via the signal conditioning instrument. Theconnection of VEGACONNECT or a HART modem directly tothe 4 … 20 mA sensor cable is not possible.

A VEGAMET/VEGASCAN with standard interface and modem(conventional telephone network or GSM) is installed at everycustomer location. From the supplier's location, "Visual VEGA"contacts at regular, predefined intervals all signal conditioninginstruments and retrieves the current measured values. Theindication receives the current levels of each customer as wellas the values of the past 30 days in a line graph. Via thenetwork, any number of persons can have these valuesdispayed at their workplace with "Visual VEGA" (server/clientprinciple). A certain measured value threshold is defined foreach measurement loop in "Visual VEGA". If this threshold isunderrun, "Visual VEGA" generates an appropriate messageon the PC, on request also an e-mail to certain persons.
