Trying Differently: A Positive Approach to Challenging Behaviours Presenter: Malgosia Tomanik

Most parenting and professional approaches to challenging behaviours do not recognize brain development and the power of rela-tionships. Instead, interventions often target presenting behaviours for change. Trying differently means to expand our range of options and move from punishing behaviours to understanding them, and to changing the environment and our expectations of the children/youth. This workshop is designed to help parents shift from changing the child’s behaviour to reframing perceptions, changing the way they respond to the behaviour and developing appropriate and effective support strategies. We will also explore the key role of relationship in addressing challenging.

Malgosia Tomanik, M.Ed., is a Family Consultant who specializes in supporting children from preschool to high school age and their

parents/caregivers in a variety of environments, including homes, school, and childcare settings. Malgosia is experienced in address-

ing concerns associated with the daily challenges of caring for a child/youth who requires support, including helping to make sense

of difficult behaviour and supporting the big people for each child in finding a way through. Malgosia also works as an FASD Key

Worker with the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre. Her educational experiences have included a Certificate in Mental Health

and Developmental Disabilities; courses in Adult Education, University of Victoria, BC and a master’s degree in Education, University

of Szczecin, Poland.

In very practical, joyful, playful ways, the workshop will engage with the concepts and practices of swaddling, unswaddling and non-swaddling pedagogies, bringing into the attention of the audience the pivotal role of early education in the designs of life. The presentation will also focus on the “missing beginnings”- the reasons why there is a globally present disconnect between early edu-cation and school education. Dr. Annabella Cant will share findings from her research in order to motivate the audience to think with the concepts and better understand the privilege of working with young children. She will continue the conversation on the introduced concepts in and will share two examples of swaddling pedagogies: the “Moulding” one and the “Not-yet” one. Also, she will introduce the theory and practice of Imaginative Education – a pedagogy that she considers close to being unswaddling – to-gether with her own contributions to it, contributions that emphasize the period at the beginning of life: 0 to 5. Participants will get a glimpse of children’s genuine capacity for openness and wonder by feeling it themselves. Annabella will remind her participants how to be joyful, playful, and open, and why these states of mind provoke deep and long-lasting learning in children.

Decolonization and Indigenous Place – Based Pedagogy in Early Childhood Education Presenters: Kristin Webster & Bronson Charles

Date: Wednesday, July 29, 2020 Time: 7:00 – 9:00 PM Location: Online Via ZOOM Fee: $10.00 members; $15.00 non-members Suitable for all early learning and child care professionals.

Education has long been taught through the Western dominant lens. We need to find space to invite indigenous knowledges and perspectives in. Truth and Reconciliation has become a buzzword in Canada for many years now. How do we take authentic steps towards this unless we walk eye to eye, and go forward with courage. There are hurdles, but with an open heart and an open mind we should be able to take the necessary steps to begin the process of dismantling all the systems of oppression that were, and are still currently in place in this country and globally. Bronson and Kristin will speak to their journeys as an Indigenous man and a settler ally woman walking a path of decolonization, in particular that of Early Childhood Education. Story and history is embedded in these lands on which we dwell, so it’s a good starting point to explore this in our pedagogy with the children. Bronson and Kristin both believe children are the change we all aspire to be, and that their thoughts should be taken into consideration as they hold deeper meaning which can assist in destabilizing Eurocentric discourse. This workshop opens up dialogue between presenters and participants to engage in meaningful ways we can work with children in a sociopolitical curriculum.

Kristin Webster was born and raised in Vancouver BC. She is employed by UBC Child Care Services and supervises the Salal Multi age Child Care program. She is passionate about Land based pedagogy through a lens of Indigenous Knowledge and place. She is cur-rently doing her Bachelor of ECED at Capilano University with plans to continue with her masters at UBC.

Bronson Charles is currently an ECED student at Vancouver Community College. He is an advocate for cultural revitalization and is of

Musqueam descent.

Date: Saturday, August 8, 2020 Time: 9:30 – 11:30 AM Location: Online Via ZOOM Fee: $10.00 members; $15.00 non-members Suitable for all early learning and child care professionals. Do you notice that the parents, children and families that you support, struggle with issues related to separation (the commence-ment of child care or school, shuffling between parents and or homes, feeling responsible for parents’ feelings or actions, the prox-imity of parents, feelings too much to handle)? As we know, the most common issue plaguing our little people today is anxiety, and with anxiety comes a host of challenges. When facing separation from a parent or caregiver, the natural feelings that are generated can impact the lives of our little people in so many ways, and they can take a significant toll on both parent and child. This work-shop will provide child care providers and parents with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively manage these challenges and face separation with ease. For the past 22 years Shannon has been concentrating in the area of child and family development. She is a Social Worker, Foster Parent, Outreach Consultant, Connect Parent Group Facilitator, and Clinician at MCFD-Child and Youth Mental Health, plus her Master’s of Education in Counselling Psychology, that informs her approach and guides her towards helping parents in a gentle, authentic way.

This presentation will focus on how parents and teachers can best cultivate these characteristics and social responsibility as a whole. It will include the story behind The Sorry Plane (her new children’s picture books) that aims to help adults preserve a child’s caring spirit and cultivate empathy. Dr. Deborah MacNamara is on Faculty at the Neufeld Institute, the author of the best selling book Rest, Play, Grow: Making Sense of Preschoolers (or anyone who acts like one), and her new children’s book, The Sorry Plane. She is the Director of Kid’s Best Bet, a family counselling centre and is a developmentalist concerned with creating the conditions for children to realize their full potential.

Discipline Without Damage: How to get Children to Behave without Messing Them Up Presenter: Dr. Vanessa Lapointe

Date: Saturday, September 12, 2020 Time: 9:30 – 12:30 PM Location: Online Via ZOOM Fee: $15.00 members; $20.00 non-members Suitable for all early learning professionals and parents.

Often times as caregivers, we are left wondering what exactly our response should be when children present with challenging be-haviours. Our task in answering that query is made even more difficult by the mountains of literature encouraging us to use one strategy or another, with each successive strategy seemingly at odds with the one before. This workshop is designed to help care-givers navigate the world of discipline. We will explore how relationship with children is at the core of both how we discipline them and the behaviours they present with. That is, our relationship with children creates an incredibly important “context.” Our goal in this workshop is to understand how our discipline style and related strategies can improve behavioral challenges by allowing for a relational context that is nurturing in nature, and that ultimately encourages the emotional health and well-being of our children. Dr. Vanessa Lapointe is an author, parenting expert, and registered psychologist (British Columbia #1856) who has been supporting families and children for more than fifteen years. Author of Discipline without Damage: How to get your kids to behave without messing them up and Parenting Right From The Start: Laying a Healthy Foundation in the Baby and Toddler years, regularly invited media guest and contributor, educator and speaker, a Huffington Post Parent blogger, and a consultant to research projects and various organizations promoting emotional health and development, Dr. Vanessa is known for bringing a sense of nurturing under-standing and humanity to all of her work. She presently works in private practice and has previous experience in a variety of settings, including the British Columbia Ministry of Children and Family Development and the school system. Her passion is in walking alongside parents, teachers, care providers, and other big people to really see the world through the child’s eyes. She believes that if we can do this, we are beautifully positioned to grow up our children in the best possible way. As a mother to 2 growing children, Dr. Vanessa strives not only professionally, but also personally, to view the world through the child’s eyes.
