Fleadh Tunes for theFiddle

This course is geared notonly at the Fleadhcompetitor, but also atany fiddle player whowants to learn tunes bestsuited to the fiddle.

You may be wondering what is a ‘Fleadh tune'? TheFleadh Cheoil (Festival of Music) is an Irish musiccompetition organised by Comhaltas. There arecounty, provincial and 'all-Ireland' levels ofcompetition that take place in Britain, N. Americaand Ireland. These all lead to the grand final 'The AllIreland Fleadh' which takes place in Ireland eachAugust. In this course, Majella teaches suitable tunesfor competitors at the fleadh.

The course begins with simple dance tunes and slowairs. A progressive study of ornamentation, variation,phrasing, tempo, rhythm and tone will take place.When dealing with Slow Airs the main focus will beon the phrasing, momentum, appropriateornamentation, the use of expression and mostimportantly the history and background to the airsand the accompanying songs, words andtranslations.

Clare Fiddle Styles Fiddle Tola Custy No

This course is aimed atthose who can alreadyplay the fiddle and whowants to develop his/herrepertoire, focusing onClare styles.

This is a lively collection of jigs, reels and hornpipestaught by the renowned Clare fiddler Tola Custy.Most of the thirteen tunes taught originate from Co.Clare, which Tola learnt from local players such as hisfather Frank Custy, Micho Russell, P.J. Crotty andJames Cullinane. Tola also includes two of his owncompositions in the course - these tunes are alreadybecoming embedded in the local tradition and canbe heard in sessions around the County Clare andfurther afield!

Tola takes a progressive approach towards teachingembellishments, the use of chords and variation. Hestarts by introducing simple techniques in the firstlessons and builds on them in subsequent lessons. Ineach lesson, he teaches the tune simply, phrase byphrase before demonstrating how to incorporatevarious techniques into the tune.

These foundations include ornamentation, tone,intonation and breath. This course has beendesigned to follow onfrom Kirsten's previouscourse titled 'FluteFoundations'.

The 'building blocks' that were introduced in 'FluteFoundations' will be expanded upon. Focus will beplaced on more advanced ornamentation: the crann,the short roll and the bounce. Phrasing andbreathing will also feature as will the use of the G#key. It is not a prerequisite to have a keyed flute forthis course; in the occasional instance where a key isused, Kirsten presents alternative melodic 'turns' forthose with keyless flutes. Reference will be made tothe exercises presented in 'Flute Foundations'throughout this course.

Kevin guides the student through a myriad of cranns,rolls, triplets, back-stitch triplets, key-work and cuts.One of the main themes of the course is articulation;Kevin constantly refers to throat articulation as ameans of accentuating the rhythm of the tunes anddemonstrates again and again how to use glottal-stops to attack the notes for percussive effect.Although the techniques taught in this course arechallenging technically, many of the tunes taughtare also suitable for the less advanced player.

A keyed flute (or an ambitious keyless flute playerwith half-holing capabilities) is required for a few ofthe tunes that Kevin teaches in the keys of F majorand D minor.
