Baghdad IraqBaghdadthe capital of the Republic of Iraq, as well as the coterminous Baghdad Province. The population of Baghdad, as of 2011, is approximately 7,216,040, making it the largest city in Iraq, the second largest city in the Arab world (after Cairo, Egypt), and the second largest city in Western Asia (after Tehran, Iran). According to the government, which is preparing for a census, the popula-tion of the country has reached 35 million, with 9 million in the capital.
Located along the Tigris River, the city was founded in the 8th century and became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. Within a short time of its inception, Baghdad evolved into a signicant cultural, commercial, and intellectual center for the Islamic world. This, in addition to housing several key academic institutions (e.g. House of Wisdom), garnered the city a worldwide reputation as the "Center of Learning". Throughout the High Middle Ages, Bagh-dad was considered to be the largest city in the world with an estimated population of 1,200,000 people. According to some archeologists it was the rst city to reach a population over one million inhabitants. The city was largely destroyed at the hands of the Mongol Empire in 1258, resulting in a decline that would linger through many centuries due to frequent plagues and multiple successive empires. With the recognition of Iraq as an independ-ent state (formerly the British Mandate of Mesopotamia) in 1938, Baghdad gradually regained some of its former prominence as a signicant center of Arab culture.

THE KURDS. WHO ARE THEY?
Iraqi Kurdistan, the Federal state of the northeastern area of Iraq has been praised as a paradise on earth in Middle Eastern literature. It is surrounded by rugged moun-tains and beyond the rugged terrain, ravines and natural springs lays Iran to the east, Turkey to the north, Syria to the west and the rest of Iraq to the South. Kurdistan is simply the immense mountainous area where the borders of Iraq, Iran, and Turkey join.
Kurdistan has almost never had a country of its own, although from 1920 to 1923 an inde-pendent Kurdistan existed. The country was divided in 1923, between present day Iraq and Turkey. They have struggled to be an independent nation and after years of heav-ing ghting between the Kurdish opposition and the Iraqi government, the establishment was the Kurdistan Region of Iraq was set in March 1970. Today, the capital is Erbil and the region is governed by the Kurdistan Regional Government.
The unique cradle of civilization was home to the rst Kurdish ancestor. Archeologists found Kurds pioneered agriculture, weaving, pottery, and metal work.
However, somewhere in the glooms of history, the Kurdish way of living became lost and it wasn’t until atrocities shocked the world then every nation in the world asked, “Kurds? Who Are They”There is a famous expression in Kurdish, “No friends but the mountains.” After centuries of conquerors in the region, the Kurds started to resist the repression. Kurds live within their beloved mountains, in hopes to preserve their dearly loved culture, their treasured language and their precious lives.
These days, Kurdish people are very friendly and Kurdish culture is famous for hospitality and generosity. You can knock at anyone’s door and they will welcome you in. On the street, they will start talking to anyone and make friends with anybody.

Kurdistan IraqSPOTLIGHT ON CULTUREMany visitors journey through Kurdistan for the Biblical chronicles. Many abundant prophets like Nahum, Jonah, Habakkuk, and Daniel are all buried within the borders of Kurdistan. In Amadiya, an ancient city, the Magi (known as the wise) began their quest when they followed a bright shining star, appearing in the sky at that time.
Kurdish culture lays into their historic roots. It’s the pride of its people and some visitor’s reason to journey to Kurdistan. Kurdish music and songs are epic in nature, which are ballads recounting the heroic tales of past Kurdish heroes. Kurdish dance is similar to those from Lebanon and the Balkans. Kurdish folklore dances distinguish them from neighboring populations. The beauty of Kurdish designs is the full of all-over oral motifs and geometric patterns. For whatever reason one decides to travel to Kurdistan, they will not escape nor hate the richness of Kurdish culture.

ECONOMY
Kurdistan has undergone immense economic growth since international sanctions were lifted. It’s quickly grow-ing into a regional economic powerhouse. Currently, Iraqi Kurdistan has the lowest poverty rates in Iraq. The region’s economy is dominated by the oil industry and is investing opportunities to span every sector, including agriculture and tourism. The region has a more devel-oped economy in comparison to other regions of Iraq, due to the relative peace.
Since 2003 the stronger economy of Iraqi Kurdistan attracted more than 100,000 works from other regions of Iraq. And since 2001, the per capita income was 28% higher than in the rest of Iraq.Recently, the Kurdistan Regional Government has taken steps to facilitate more opportunities. It has passed laws and regulations, and promotes foreign venture.

Kurdistan IraqLocal TransportTravel by car in the Kurdistan Region is very simple and generally safe. Private cars and drivers are availa-ble, but they can be expensive. Taxis are a far more economical option, and they are readily available on most major roads in all the cities. A ride to or from almost anywhere in the cities normally costs some-where between 3-7,000 ID, and you can catch a seat in a shared taxi between any of the major cities for 10-30,000 ID depending on the distance—just ask a city taxi driver “garajee + the name of city/town where you want to go". There are generally two types of taxis in the cities. Some are painted orange and white, while others are painted a light tan colour. The light tan taxis are driven by government vetted drivers, and they are considered to be safest—these cars are usually newer and cleaner also.

It has several fruit orchards, a food market,
restaurants and hotels. Further away deeper into the moun-tains and gorges, Gali Ali Beg and Bekhal waterfalls and the water source at Jundyan offer beautiful scenery and a place to stop and enjoy lunch or a drink at the outdoor restaurants, or simply sit down to enjoy your own picnic in a quiet spot.Take a drive through the deep gorge called Gali Ali Beg, along the famous Hamilton Road that passes through some of the nest scenery in Kurdistan. Kurdistan IraqSecurityin the Region
The security situation in the Kurdistan Region in Iraq is very different from the rest of Iraq. Not a single coalition soldier was killed in the Region during the Iraq war beginning in 2003. The ofcial Regional guard, the Peshmerga forces, are highly trained and experienced in providing security. The Asayish (or police security force) work in close cooperation with the Peshmerga (or regional guard) to provide compre-hensive protection against threats and help with routine police matters.
To maintain the level of peace in Kurdistan, there are checkpoints on the borders and city perimeters. Separate advice must be sought for travel throughout Iraq outside of the Kurdistan Region. We also recommend that visitors consult travel advice issued by their country of domicile for visiting other parts of Iraq.

Kurdistan IraqFood and beveragesKurdish cuisine is based on lamb, chicken, rice and bread, and the use of many fresh herbs and vegeta-bles. Fish served in restaurants is often barbecued over an open re to make a traditional Iraqi dish called mazgouf. Fresh fruit or baklava, a Middle Eastern aky pastry and nut dessert, is usually served with sweet black tea, after the main course. While many types of fruit and vegetables are available throughout the year, seasonal and local products, such as wild asparagus, native rhubarb, green almonds and buffalo yoghurt, are highly prized and enjoyed. Black tea with sugar is the most popular beverage both inside and outside the home. Drinking alcohol in mod-eration is acceptable in some restaurants and hotels. Drunken and loud behaviour is frowned upon.

Kurdistan IraqKurdistan’s Growth SparkWhile the world was dealing with the huge global economic crises, the Kurdistani government registered about 8 percent growth in 2011. The center of this growth is Erbil. The economic climate in Erbil is booming. Powered by its rich oil & gas supplies, which is projected at forty ve billion barrels, Erbil is seeing unprecedented economic expansion. Erbil’s income per-capita is 50 percent greater than the remainder part of the whole country. This isn’t too bad for a region that just few years ago was Saddam Hussein’s regime in all its factors that contributed to the current situation. Many observers credit a big portion of the region’s economic growth to the security measures of the Kurdistan Regional Government. After the economic sanctions were lifted in 2003, the region’s economy began to bloom.Due to the increase in Erbil companies some are calling Erbil the next UAE Dubai. “This city is rising at a pace even quicker than the Emarati Dubai. Within 4 or 5 years, the Kurdistan region of Iraq will attain what the United Arab Emirates had attained in 20. It will change so much that no one could recognize it,” Cem Saffari said, who is the Turkish business development manager at the luxury Divan Hotel in Erbil. He moved to this company in Erbil from a comfy lifestyle in London because of the pioneering efforts seen in Erbil. The Divan Hotel is just one example of businesses popping up all over Erbil and attracting international employees. So what is the buzz about and which sectors and countries are bringing the most growth?

Flights to the Kurdistan Region
The Kurdistan Region has two international airports: Erbil International Airport and Slemani International Airport. A new international airport is under construction in Duhok. Most ights operating from Europe and the Middle East y directly to Kurdistan, without going via Baghdad. Several IATA scheduled carriers already y to Erbil, and more IATA airlines are expected to start ights there. Several charter companies also operate ights to Erbil or Slemani.

EIA is not only a world class airport by technical standards, but also in passenger comfort. Many travelers connect between long haul and regional ights. But Erbil is more than a transfer point; it is growing in importance as a nal destination. The KRG has enacted favorable rules to attract foreign investors and to help citizens of the Kurdistan Region in exile return home. Domestic trafc, as well as regional trafc throughout the expan-sive Middle East, is rapidly growing. Both have contributed to the constant increase in trafc at Erbil International Airport, even while the rest of the world began the current slow down in 2009.Many expatriates from Iraqi Kurdistan are returning, feeding a booming construction sector. Jobs abound, as well as a strong belief in the future.Kurdish citizens living in exile are returning, bringing along experi-ence and know-how from different countries and cultures. There is an ever stronger need for efcient air transport, for passengers as well as cargo. These are some of the reasons that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and EIA have constructed and equipped an airport for the future, with capacity for three million passengers, and one of the world’s longest runways, designed to accommo-date the Airbus A380 and cargo aircraft of that class. Our new airport is the culmination of the vision and strategy put in place in 2003.Erbil is on the way to reclaim its historic position along one of the world’s most important trade routes.
Erbil International Airport
Kurdistan’s great natural resources of oil, natural gas and other minerals is creat-ing a ourishing and rapidly growing business environment.
The Erbil area has a stable water supply, and is surrounded by lovely and accessible wilderness lands, with greenery, clean streams, waterfalls and caves. This stands in stark contrast to other Middle Eastern destinations, and visitors will fuel an impor-tant tourism industry in Kurdistan.

Built for the future
Erbil International Airport has the tenths longest runway in the world. It is able to operate planes even in the most challenging weather conditions.
Cargo trafc is an important feature of EIA, and demand is growing rapidly.
The new terminal features CIP areas for visiting business jets, and there is a separate VIP terminal for visiting dignitaries and diplomats.
The new airport fullls all modern environmental require-ments and has a separate environmental body addressing these questions.
The airport is located close to central Erbil, eliminating long transfers to and from the airport, further reducing its environ-mental impact.
The construction of Erbil International Airport was entirelly funded by the KRG.

A winning designErbil International Airport offers an exciting, light and airy environ-ment for passengers and airport users with urban comforts and modern buildings
Erbil International Airport is an exciting, light and airy design by Scott Wilson Group. Headquartered in the UK, the group is an award-winning integrated design and engineering rm, working both with natural and constructed environments. Their projects span the globe and include natural landscapes, urban designs, buildings, roadways, railways, and airports. The main contractor is Makyol Cengiz, a major construction company based in Turkey, in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipalities. The airport is built next to the old airport, previously a military base. With its short 2,800 meter runway and temporary terminal buildings, the need was great for a new airport, not just a new terminal.
In 2003 the Kurdistan Regional Government(KRG) decided that Kurdistan should have its own gateway to the world in Erbil, and the re-building of the old military base began on the 1st of July, 2003. The work to modernize and improve the airport technical-ly continued under the direction of KRG PM Mr. Nechirvan Barzani, and on May 26, 2005, the airport received its ICAO code ORER.
The construction of Erbil International Airport has been fully funded by the KRG at a total cost over 350 million US Dollars.

Flights to the Kurdistan RegionLand border crossing to Kurdistan RegionOverland entry into the Kurdistan Region is possible through Turkey. The suggested route is to y to Istanbul Ataturk Airport and then take a two-hour domestic ight to Diyarbakir. (Turkish visas can be obtained on arrival at Istanbul Airport. Baggage may have to be retrieved from the International Terminal and checked in at the Domestic Terminal.)
At Diyarbakir Airport taxis can be hired to drive to the Ibrahim Khalil/Habur border crossing point, Turkey’s border with the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. Many drivers do this journey frequent-ly and are familiar with the route. It is advisable to settle the price beforehand, a guide price is USD 150, and to check that the driver has the necessary paper work to take passengers over the border. Because of the journey time it is advisable to start the overland journey in the early morning, staying overnight in Diyarbakir if necessary.
After crossing the border at Ibrahim Khalil, another taxi can take you to your destination in the Kurdistan Region. The approximate journey time from Diyarbakir to the border is 4 hours; then from the border to Dohuk is 1.5 hours; to Erbil 4 hours; and to Slemani 6 hours. There are alternative routes via Iran and Syria but these are less frequently travelled.
