However, he just started quilting after retiring from his construction company and moving to West Bend, Iowa to be closer to his daughter in 2002! That sewing machine must run day and night . . . maybe even on ‘auto pilot’!! DeLos previously retired from Northwestern Bell in 1985. DeLos gets most of his fabric from other’s left-overs, so he doesn’t need to purchase much besides thread. He labels each and every one with his name and quilt number. And not only does DeLos quilt, but he is passing on his talent to a granddaughter, a senior in high school, and working on her third quilt. What a wonderful gift. And where are the 10 quilts from our 1944 AHS alum headed? Right back to his alma matter, to be used in the buildings by the school nurse, Cynthia Eby. Cindy said she has been looking at the old blankets, wondering how she was going to replace them as they are getting very worn. Class of ’71 Celebrates a Hall of Fame Record Year

Front row: Chuck Schwarzkopf, Gayle Knoll Arnburg, Wendy Edwards Smart, Marty Parkins,Dave Martin, Kevin Custer

The back folk: Jim Peters, Lynn FisherWyszynski, Kevin Marshall, Barb Anderson Peterman, Andy Quarnstrom, George Warford, Cara Gowin Stuart, Craig Saveraid,"Cocky" Red Jensen, Jim "Cloudy" Huston

Do you remember the heat of study hall in May? Or the cool quiet breezes in October - leaves

falling, hearing them fall…band beating down to the park?

Football games, cozy with a friend in the stands, seeing someone you know,

cool breath in your lungs. Friends riding around. A newness in your mind,

everything alive, everything there, the future ahead of you,

beauty, work and pain ahead of you. Willing to go, willing to try,

excited by the newness of it all.

Winter, cold and long.

Start the car, cracking vinyl, hunch forward, dreaming of warmth.

Wrestling practice, Saturday morning, icy breeze; running, drenched in sweat,

mat, whistles, running halls, cold buses, rival towns, dark faces, cautious

opponents, aching chest and tortured breaths, rock steady, rock steady.

LOST AND FOUNDPoetry!

Summer, county fairs,

riding horses, carnival lights, Perfect nights,

slow river, blue ribbons, big dances, pretty girls, soft dresses,

drifting music, lovely friends, dreamy smiles, touching hands, yearnful glow,

summer's end…

One more year. Seniors.

Unimaginable time.

“Heaven help us for finding old poetry in thegarage - but my wife (not even from Iowa) thought this was pretty good and I should send to you. Lord knows when I wrote it”

-Jerry O’Brien

ADM SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION

Just to let you know, this year the foundation awarded 14 ADM graduates $1,000 each for theirhigher education endeavors – an increase from 12 scholarships awarded last year. These are allour sons, daughters, relatives or friends . . . The types of higher education these winners will bepursuing include everything from “. . . Stanford-type universities to welding schools . . .” asStan Norenberg, founder of the fund, is fond of saying. But many deserving ADM studentswere turned away because of lack of funds again this year.

What makes ADM Scholarship Fund so special? Consider these points:

• Graduates are awarded scholarships – not loans – they do not have to be paid backas many “awards” do

• A varied, 14-member selection committee reviews all submissions • Student names do not appear on the applications, avoiding favoritism• 99.993% of all contributions go to scholarships – no one at the foundation receives

compensation – (remaining costs go only to printing, mailing, etc.)• From 1985 – 2009, 295 scholarships have been paid out totaling $270,000• Contributions to date (Feb. ’83 – May ’09) $730,000• The foundation’s goal is to raise $2M allowing them to give a scholarship every year to

each deserving graduate while keeping the fund self-sustaining

If you have thoughts on how we can make this great foundation better, please let us know. Also, you may know of someone who is interested, please let us know or pass this informationon. Questions can be sent to: ADM Scholarship Foundation, 801 Nile Kinnick Drive South,Adel, Iowa 50003 *The ADM Scholarship Fund, Inc. is a 501(c) charitable organization and itstax ID number is 42-1205054.

Mention the subject of Fine Arts, and most people think ofRembrandt, Leonard Bernstein, andother wildly successful figures. Yet allgreat masters had teachers, people who planted the seeds.

I remember Mrs. Smith’s music class singing,“I love to goa wandering along the mountain trail…”, or what about“My hat it had three corners, three corners, had my hat,and if it hadn’t three corners, it would not be my hat”.

I also remember Mrs. Royer attempting to teach usabout the great masters. I recall us as junior high boyssnickering at the portraits of nude figures, but theseeds of understanding were planted and I appreciatethe arts as an adult.

Most of us will never be a Luciano Pavarotti, or aMichaelangelo, but even as we grow older, we can singin church or in the shower. We can draw and paint forour own pleasure, or for our children and grandchildren.

The AMD schools are blessed with a great staff ofteachers of the arts. The mission of the Fine ArtsBoosters is to support these teachers and to helpplant the seeds in the youth of our communities. Thatmission is accomplished each year in different wayswhether purchasing new band instruments, newteaching tools, or paying fees of a student who needsfinancial help. The hard fact is this support takes agreat deal of funds.

The board of the Fine Arts Boosters is beginning its membership drive for the 2009-2010 school year.Great programs need great boosters. Whoknows, a great master could be beginning the 1st gradethis year, or a future president of the United Statesjust might be a current member of the speech andmock trial teams. All people of great stature comefrom somewhere; will you help great figures of thefuture from ADM? Class of 1989 Has a “Blast” at 20 Year ReunionOur 20th class reunion was a total blast! We had 77 people attend our Friday night reunion – and 51 were from the class of 1989! Yahoo! We told great stories and remembered good times of ADHS.Steph Scott Wilson brought a video of our Homecoming parade and coronation – a real hoot!I’d recommend to anyone with a dismal turnout – wait 20 years and then have a reunion! It was ourfirst gathering since we left Mr. Norenberg & crew – and we were excited to reconnect with each other.

Café in the Park was ideal. The locationwas perfect for our group – the foodwas fab as usual – and Kayla and teamwere hospitable all night.

We have tons of photos – and I can’tbelieve we didn’t get a big group shot ofeveryone on Friday night, but we didn’t.Classmate Randy Kreager drove usthrough the parade route as we threwcandy and bouncy balls.

Regrettably our bark was a little louderthan the bite on the golf course . . . wedidn’t get the title. Next time!

To all involved, what a great night it was and what a fantastic job each of you did to make thenight come together. I will remember this night forever. It was so great to see fellow “Adelians”and so many former students and athletes.

I have always felt that Adel did a much betterjob of promoting the school system that doother schools and this weekend was certainlyproof of this fact.

I hope that this letter will be shared witheveryone that made this possible.

Once again, from the bottom of my heart, thankyou so very much for the great honor that youhave bestowed upon me. Rick Adkins”

Yearbook ProjectThe ADM Board is looking forward to the opportunity to have all of our past yearbooksscanned and put on CD - thanks to Joe Mulvihill, Class of 1982. Joe contacted us from

his home in Blue Ridge Texas inquiring about getting a copy of his yearbook. When we informed him we didn’t have an extra, he asked if we would

“trust” him to mail it, have him scan it and then return to us. He sent it back along with two CD copies which were absolutely great.

Then Joe offered to do them all for us over a period of time!

The Board is really excited about this – we had asked a couple of different sources about doing it and had been turned down or the project was just too expensive to have done.

So, we really appreciate Joe’s willingness to help us out on this!

Thanks Joe – for your support to the ADM Alumni!

Another Memory of Mr. MeisWhile in school, we seldom really appreciate our teachers as interesting individuals.

As an adult, I got to know several of the icon teachers, including Mr. Meis.

Each of us who had Mr. Meis for English, knew he was a stickler for proper grammar.Even as I write this, I am wondering if my writing would pass his scrutiny.

Those of us who who got to know him in the real world knew he was prone to a few slips.

One time he came in to our store and asked"Can I use the phone?".

I replied, I don't know, can you?He responded "Alright, alright", but you could tell he loved it.

Next time!

ONCE A TIGER . . . ALWAYS A TIGER!

It’s all about ‘giving back’, right? At therecent ADM All-class reunion, class of 1944alum, DeLos Biddle donated 10 quilts hehas pieced and quilted to be used for acharitable cause. DeLos is no stranger togiving. He has donated about 100 of his quilts to a project called ‘Ugly Quilts’, quilts and sleeping bagsfor the homeless. These donations are ‘free to people who are cold on the street.’ DeLos has also donated his quilts extensively to Mercy Hospitals.

DeLos recently finished quilt #583, a memory quilt for his nephew and wife complete with 30 pictures offamily members. He printed the pictures on fabric sheets with his computer, and then sewed them intoa wonderful quilt full of memories.

One would think that DeLos has been quilting since his years at AHS with that many quilts to his credit. However, he just started quilting after retiring from his construction company and moving toWest Bend, Iowa to be closer to his daughter in 2002! That sewing machine must run day and night . . .maybe even on ‘auto pilot’!! DeLos previously retired from Northwestern Bell in 1985.

DeLos gets most of his fabric from other’s left-overs, so he doesn’t need to purchase much besides thread. He labels each and every one with his name and quilt number. And not only does DeLos quilt, but he ispassing on his talent to a granddaughter, a senior in high school, and working on her third quilt. Whata wonderful gift.

And where are the 10 quilts from our 1944 AHS alum headed? Right back to his alma matter, to beused in the buildings by the school nurse, Cynthia Eby. Cindy said she has been looking at the old blankets, wondering how she was going to replace them as they are getting very worn. What a perfectcircle of ‘giving back.’ Our class and all of the ADM Alumni with to thank DeLos for his 10 beautifulquilts he as made, machine quilted and donated to the Association.
