On a sunny Monterey afternoon in 1940, a fishing boat sailed out of Monterey Bay, headed to Baja California in Mexico. The name of the boat was the Western Flyer. It was a 76-foot long boat called a purse seiner because it used a net like a purse to catch sardines.
What color are boats? Where does everyone sleep? Where is the kitchen or galley?

zarpó de la Bahía de Monterey, en direccion a Baja. El nombre del
barco era el Western Flyer. Era un barco de 76 pies de largo llamado
cerquero porque usaba un red para cercar y atrapar sardinas.

On the Western Flyer were marine biologist Edward F. Ricketts, who lived on Cannery Row in Monterey, and his best friend John Steinbeck, who was a writer born in Salinas. They were headed south to the Gulf of California on an exploration—to spend 6 weeks looking at animals in the intertidal (sea stars, snails, hermit crabs and others).

On the boat, they talked about many, many things that interested them. The first topic they discussed was sea monsters. We like to think of the deep ocean populated with mysterious things — huge squids and enormous whales. But are there also monsters in the deep?

“Below the Mexican border the water changes color; it becomes a deep ultramarine blue. This is the tuna water — life water. It is complete from plankton to gray porpoises,” Steinbeck wrote. While traveling south in the Pacific Ocean along the Baja California coast, the crew saw all of this life: sea turtles, dolphins, flying fish, and tunas. The crew tried to catch the tunas and the turtles.
Do you think we should catch turtles in the ocean? There are fewer and fewer sea turtles.
“Debajo de la frontera mexicana el agua cambia de color; se

In Mexico, the Western Flyer first docked at Cabo San Lucas, which is now a big resort. But in 1940 mostly fishermen lived there. And there was a tuna cannery.

“On the beach at Cabo San Lucas there is a war between the pigs and the vultures,” Steinbeck observed. They fought for the “snacks” thrown away by the tuna cannery — tasty fish guts. Sometimes skinny dogs sneaked in and captured a fish belly.

In La Paz, children were curious about what these people were looking for on the beach. They knew where all the animals lived and brought them many specimens!

In La Paz, Steinbeck and Ricketts tried to buy a chicken for dinner, and they were told to catch the chicken themselves! They couldn’t do it, and children helped them catch the chicken! “They were gallant, fast chickens.”

At each stop along the Gulf of California coast, the two friends went to shore, collecting little animals in buckets. John’s wife went too! One of their favorite creatures on the beach was the Sally Lightfoot crab, which is bright red. They run across rocks very quickly and are almost impossible to catch!

On Good Friday they went to church in La Paz, and on Easter Sunday they rested and visited mangroves and lagoons on Isla San Jose. There they talked about how all of life is connected together — including the little black flies that bit them and left a stinging burn!

Pascua descansaron y visitaron manglares y lagunas en Isla San José.

At Puerto Escondido, local ranchers invited John and Ed on a hunt for borrego, the desert big-horn sheep. The men didn’t kill any sheep but instead brought dry sheep poop back to the boat! And they mounted one perfect borrego dropping on a board: “we can say, ‘There was an animal, and for all we know there still is and here is the proof of it. He was very healthy when we last heard of him.”
Draw poop near the big-horned sheep. Would you rather bring home a sheep’s head as a trophy or some dry sheep poop?

The Western Flyer stopped in Loreto, the first successful mission in Baja California. It is still there today, with a nice museum to visit. Have you been to a mission in California? How do you feel about the history of missions in Alta and Baja California?

Ed called the intertidal animals they found “little beasties.” Here are a few of the animals they found. They explored each stop, finding new animals and meeting local people.

“The aquarium is a very valuable extension of shore observation,” John Steinbeck wrote. John and Ed and Carol collected animals from the shore and took them on the boat to study carefully, sometimes in an aquarium. Can you draw intertidal animals in this aquarium?

Can you believe that this strange creature was one of their favorite animals? “…the sulphury-green and black cucumber is the most ubiquitous shore animal of the Gulf of California”? On Isla Espíritu Santo they said, “As the tide dropped on the shallow beach we saw literally millions of these cucumbers.” John and Ed also found many specimens of heliaster, the lovely sun-star, which was “a close second” in abundance.

There are many islands in the Gulf of California. John and Ed think that “islands have always been fascinating places” and old stories take place on islands — anything might happen there in fairy tales and myths. In Guaymas, near the end of their trip, they got off the boat and went to restaurants and listened to music. They were very tired after their six weeks of collecting intertidal animals in Baja! There were many tourists in Guaymas, and John Steinbeck didn’t like the town as much as he liked the beaches and the shore. The Western Flyer visited a shrimp-trawling boat offshore that was catching “tons of shrimps, but also tons of fish of many varieties; sierras, pompano of several species; of the sharks, smooth-hounds and hammerheads; eagle rays and butterfly rays; small tuna; catfish; puerco — tons of them. Fish were thrown overboard immediately, and only the shrimps kept.” Do you think it is OK to waste all these fish for a few shrimp? This still happens in the Gulf of California today — just as it did in 1940!
En Guaymas, cerca del final de su viaje, se bajaron del bote y fueron a restaurantes y escucharon música. Estaban muy cansados después de sus seis semanas de recolectar animales intermareales en Baja. The Western Flyer sailed back to Monterey in April, 1940. Now this boat is being restored in Port Townsend, Washington and will sail in 2021 into Monterey Bay again, where we will be working with school groups — maybe yours!
Until then, when you can visit the boat, you can work on this coloring book and have your own adventure. Bring it along, all colored in, when you visit the ship!
