Background Ever since the first Games of the modern era in Athens in 1896, posters

have played an important part in the popularization of the Olympics. They have also served, once every four years, to identify both the host city and a particular aesthetic linked to the global image of the Games of that year.

These posters can help us develop pupil’s knowledge and understanding about:

* The History of Posters and Graphic Design* International Politics and World History* Ideologies behind the Olympics

The following slide show includes all Olympic posters from 1896-2008…

What Next?

• In classrooms…sports day photos, figure drawings, flags, “sporting” still-lifes, collages…

• KEVICC involvement…visits from KEVICC pupils and staffworkshops at KEVICC (Photoshop, print workshop, large scale banners/ paintings)

• Final Pieces…A “range” of outcomes will work well. Experience tells us that presentation is crucial. Ideas: large canvas’, figurative sculpture, collage, prints
