amenities, and activities to rival any seaside destination, earning the town its title of “Coolest Small Town in America” by Budget Travel Magazine and “Best Yachting Town” by Yachting Magazine. The Old Homes & Gardens Tour is a perfect opportunity to explore beautiful restored historic homes, superb gardens, and churches. From small cottages to double-porched homes, this year’s tour will feature 11 private homes, 10 lush gardens, and artist studios as well as “plein-air” artists around town. New this year is a vintage airstream trailer completely decorated. The restored buildings on the Beaufort Historic Site will be open both days with docents in period dress. Other popular events include an Antique Car Show, an opening concert by the Carteret Chorale, and narrated tours of the Beaufort Historic District aboard a vintage English double-decker bus. Since 1960, this annual weekend has been the largest fundraiser for the Beaufort Historical Association and has been a time of community involvement and pride where Beaufort residents proudly open the doors of their splendid homes to help and support the BHA’s preservation efforts and educational programs. Kicking off this year’s Tour is the Art opening on Thursday, June 5th for featured artist Larry Dean, as well as a new event, the “Men Who Cook” Party on Saturday, June 7th. Dean’s show, “Beaufort’s Colorful Palette,” features his inaugural collection of nautical themed work, which captures the charm of Beaufort’s waterfront town and stunning coastal landscape through the eyes of a visitor. The “Men Who Cook” party coincides with the release of the second volume of the “Beaufort Cooks” cookbook, a compilation of dishes from the local men of Beaufort. During this special event, several of these men will be on hand as guest chefs to

prepare delicious tastings of the recipes included in the cookbook. This party will also serve to thank the homeowners and garden owners who work so hard to get their homes and gardens ready for the wonderful Tour. Each of the private homes on the Tour, from the historic to the newly-constructed, has a distinct personality as unique and varied as the homeowners themselves. Tour-goers will expect to find architecture and décor that range from the Victorian Era to modern styling, filled with notable artwork and beautiful antiques passed down from older generations. Held in conjunction with the Old Homes Tour, the Antiques Show and Sale will be held June 27th through the 29th, with over 40 dealers from throughout the Southeast, displaying furniture, silver, crystal, jewelry, linens, dolls, and much more. The Antiques Show will be held in the Crystal Coast Civic Center in Morehead City and offers 3 days of great antiquing to fit any budget. With such a wide range of dealers offering treasures and collectibles of all types, from fine china to vintage jewelry to refurbished one-of-a-kind furniture pieces, there is truly something for everyone. A Gourmet Tea Room will be open during the Antiques Show and Sale and will offer specialty sandwiches provided by Amos Mosquito’s Restaurant, Beaufort Grocery Company and Spouter Inn, beverages and a variety of homemade desserts. Tickets for the Old Homes & Gardens Tour are $18 in advance and $20 at the door, and the Antiques Show and Sale tickets are $7 and good for all three days. Combination tickets for both the Old Homes and Gardens Tour and Antique Show and Sale are available for $21 in advance and $24 the days of the events. For more information, please contact the Beaufort Historical Association or stop by the Visitor’s Center.

BHA Honors volunteer standouts at membership meeting

and overseeing the BHA’s first cookbook, Beaufort Cooks, which features over 40 recipes from local restaurants, B&Bs and residents and is sold in the BHA’s Welcome Center and gift shop. “It seems strange to get an award for doing things that you enjoy as much as I enjoy working with the BHA,” explained Bland, adding, “I really believe the Historic Site is a wonderful part of Beaufort and I love participating in events that help to keep it strong. I’m looking forward to the Old Homes Tour in June which is shaping up to be one of the best ever.” The Fundraiser Award was presented to Marvin Barnes, whose involvement with the BHA extends over the past 20 years. He has served on the BHA board for 6 years, and held the office of president for one year. Barnes also serves on the Beaufort Historical Foundation board; an endowment account put in place to help ensure the future sustainability of the Beaufort Historic Site, including upkeep and maintenance of the Site’s 11 buildings. Upon joining the Foundation board in 2008, Mr. Barnes stepped up and made a gracious personal donation that ignited an interest in the endowment and renewed fundraising efforts. Since his involvement, the board has seen an expansion in members as well as a balance increase almost doubling what it was when he joined. Towards the end of 2013, Mr. Barnes, along with his wife Cynthia, made yet another commitment to the Beaufort Historical Foundation, pledging to match funds raised by the Foundation board. The Beaufort Historical Association’s Longevity Award was presented to Anne Currier, for her length and breadth of service to the BHA. Currier has been a member of the BHA for almost 20 years, and has been actively involved in taking on a myriad of rolls to assist the BHA in any way she can, from volunteering in

the BHA Gift Shop and Welcome Center, working in the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery to stepping in as conductor on the BHA’s double-decker bus. Mrs. Currier has also dedicated many years to the BHA’s various events and has served on many committees including Old Homes and Gardens Tour, Candlelight Tour and the Valentine Membership Party. In addition to the fundraising role these events play, they are also vital to sharing and preserving the heritage of Beaufort to educate current and future generations. Walt and Beverly Glover Wood were presented with the Couples Award. Having only been members of the BHA for a little over a year, this energetic couple thrives on sharing their time and talents and has been an irreplaceable part of the BHA in many ways. Beverly joined the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery Committee, and has had a strong presence in the gallery with her eye for staging and organizing all the featured artwork. Both Walt and Beverly volunteered during Kindergarten Thanksgiving, the BHA’s largest educational program which aims to educate children about the rich history of Beaufort and Carteret County. The program is put on almost entirely through the help of volunteers like Beverly and Walt and works with the schools’ curricula to develop programs relevant to classroom work. Mary Hunnings was the recipient of the BHA’s Newcomer Award. Mary has been a member of the BHA a little over a year and attended the BHA’s Volunteer Training program in March to become further involved in the Association. Mary volunteers regularly in the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery and her smile and upbeat nature are a regular fixture in the Welcome Center.Mary also donates her time and as a “Warped Weaver” working on historic looms upstairs in the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery and in the back of the Leffers Cottage. What the weavers make is then put in the Welcome Center gift shop for sale and helps raise funds for the BHA. Last year the weavers made 196 items net close to $1500 for the BHA.

Members of the Beaufort Historical Association and guests were treated to a delicious potluck dinner and the presentation of the Volunteer Awards at the BHA’s semi-annual membership meeting, Tuesday, January 21st at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Beaufort. The BHA presented five awards during the evening’s event, recognizing individuals for their exceptional volunteer efforts during 2013. Well-deserved recipient Katherine Bland was honored with the BHA’s 2013 Edward and Frances Trent Piver Award for Outstanding Volunteer of the Year. Involved with the BHA since 2007, Katherine began making an immediate difference wherever she volunteered. Mrs. Bland graciously dedicated time and energy to various events and committees throughout the years including the Old Homes Tour (which she now chairs), the BHA’s Fall Party, Christmas Candlelight Tour and Valentine Membership Party among others. Mrs. Bland, along with her husband Chuck, also opened their home to both the Old Homes Tour and Candlelight Tour during 2013. Katherine’s extends her involvement to many aspects of the BHA, from continually contributing to the various BHA fundraisers and the Beaufort Historical Foundation, to answering phones and assisting visitors in the Welcome Center on a weekly basis. In addition to the many hours Katherine

regularly volunteers, she was also one of the

key people involved in

organizing

Larry DeanJune 5 — July, 2014 Artwork by Larry Dean, the featured artist for the 54th Old Homes & Gardens Tour, will be unveiled at the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery on Thursday, June 5th from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The artwork that comprises Larry Dean’s show, Beaufort’s Colorful Palette, reflects one of his favorite destinations for travel and leisure. The opening will feature his inaugural collection of nautical themed work, which captures the charm of Beaufort’s waterfront town and the stunning coastal landscape through the eyes of a visitor. Larry Dean is a native North Carolinian, born in Oxford, with artistic

and musical roots that run deep in the North Carolina soil. An accomplished musician, Larry has been playing the piano and singing professionally since he was seven years old. He currently enjoys a career as the owner and lead singer of the North Tower Band. In 2001, Larry took his first acrylic painting class and channeled his creativity into a new passion. He became a member of Raleigh’s Visual Artists Exchange and began selling his work with great success. In 2002, Dean was awarded the blue ribbon for painting at the NC State Fair. Today he resides in Raleigh, where he continues to study painting and teach art classes at the Sertoma Art Center.

Dee KnottAugust 2 — september, 2014 On August 2nd, a retrospective show and sale will be held for nationally acclaimed watercolorist Dee Knott. Dee passed away on August 14, 2013, leaving the art world with a great void. Her husband, Ray, wanted to honor her and we can think of no better way than a show of her work.

Come join the BHA for its annual Summer Party on July 12th from 7 - 11pm at the Beaufort Historic Site. You can’t miss this premier summer event, featuring a Luau inspired menu by local favorite, Beaufort Grocery Company, and live music by The Boomers. A phenomenal band with a cool vibe and crowd-pleasing favorites from every generation, The Boomers will keep us dancing through the night! With the help of donations by local businesses, the Association hopes to raise funds through a live and silent auction to continue its mission of

preserving the local history as well as educating future generations of the rich heritage found in Beaufort. This “summer casual” evening event will also showcase original artwork by Larry Dean, featured artist for the 2014 Old Homes and Gardens Tour. His work will be on display in the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery through July. Tickets to the BHA Summer Party are $100 and can be purchased at the BHA Welcome Center at 130 Turner Street, or by calling 252-728-5225. In April, the Beaufort Historical Association said its' good-byes to Public Relations Director, Lindsay Parker.

Lindsay began working for the BHA in 2011 and has played a vital role in the whole organization. She says, “I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work with the

Beaufort Historical Association these past two and a half years. The friends I have made and the knowledge I’ve gained are something that I will truly cherish and keep with me for years to come.” With Lindsay’s departure, the BHA welcomes its newest staff member, Laura Slagel, as the Public Relations Director. Laura grew up in Virginia and has had the privilege of living on both the East and West coasts over the last 10 years. She moved to Morehead City in 2012 from Charleston, SC. She has been married for almost 8 years to Matt Slagel, a Shoreline Management Specialist with the NC Division of Coastal Management. They have a playful rescue dog, Toby, who keeps them active. In between work and family, Laura enjoys coaching gymnastics, volunteering with her church, and pursuing her passions of design and architecture.

The Beaufort Historical Association has been busy! Our board met in January and welcomed new members Eric Bigham, Joyce McCune, and Jerri Sutton. New ideas were discussed with much enthusiasm on improvements to activities and programs supporting our mission. In February we welcomed The Spirit Hunters who made a presentation about the “spirits” in our site’s houses, and did more investigations for their upcoming trip back to Beaufort this summer. The February Valentine membership party was followed in March and April with a living history event, volunteer orientation, an art exhibit at the Mattie King Gallery, Publick Day on the grounds, and a great Easter egg hunt. A new brick walk and gate have been installed leading to the Mattie King Gallery. Planning for the Old Homes Tours and Antique Show Weekend is in progress. The gift shop and house and bus tours are back in full swing as more visitors come to learn about the unique history of Beaufort. I especially want to thank the Beaufort Historical Foundation for its hard work building the Foundation account as well as helping with our continued maintenance projects on our historic buildings this winter. Come on by the BHA to see what is happening as we continue to pursue the BHA mission to preserve and interpret the cultural, architectural, and historical heritage of Beaufort. Of course all of this could not be done without the great work of our staff and the many wonderful volunteers. Thank you for your continued support for our great organization.

Our Warmest Thanks... To Bellagurl, Morehead City’s full service marketing and advertising firm, for selecting the BHA as a recipient of their “Marketing that Matters” grant. The assistance from Cheryl Pigott and her team in developing a new and updated website has been invaluable. They are even helping us move into the 21st century with all of the social media! As they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” and now we can share all of our exciting events and day-to-day activities with much more ease. You can find us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and even YouTube, where there is great footage of the Old Burying Ground. We’re thrilled to spread the word about all we have to offer to a younger generation!

More thanks go to the Carteret Community Foundation, the Wells Fargo Foundation, Beaufort East Village – A Division of Preston Development, and Bobby Safrit for the funding and manpower for a new entrance and brick walkway leading visitors from Turner Street to our Welcome Center and historic site. It has already made such a difference at welcoming the community through our gates. We are truly blessed to be supported by such a generous and talented community.

After much success with the Beaufort Cooks cookbook, the Old Homes and Gardens Tour Committee has assembled Volume 2, a compilation of dishes from the local men of Beaufort. “Our first cookbook was done last year for the Old Homes Tour and featured recipes from Inns, B & B’s, and local restaurants,” explains Committee Chair Katherine Bland. “It was a very popular keepsake, so we wanted to do another one with a different twist. The men in our town are very proud of their cooking. Many of their favorite recipes

are “highly improvised,” so this is the first time some of the recipes were actually written down.” The release of Volume 2 coincides with the “Men Who Cook” Kickoff Party for the 54th Old Homes & Gardens Tour on Saturday, June 7th at the Beaufort Historic Site. Several of the men will be on hand as guest chefs and the event will feature delicious tastings of the recipes included in the cookbook. The new cookbook will be available this summer online and in the BHA Gift Shop. For less than $10, it’s a great souvenir or gift for any occasion. The cookbook includes over 50 original recipes and artwork by artists who have been featured in the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery, all of which portray a colorful depiction of daily life around Beaufort. The BHA extends a ‘thank you’ to everyone on the committee and especially Katherine Bland and Laura Slagel for making all of the details come together.

Living History2014 Schedule of Events

Duke University Helps BHA summer Camp Bring Beaufort’s History to Life!

This summer, Professor and Historian Nan Mullenneaux will teach a history class for the Duke Marine Lab titled, “Who’s Buried in Beaufort? Writing the History and Mystery of this Historic Seaside Town.” Professor Mullenneaux will introduce students to the fascinating stories of Beaufort’s 300 year-old human history by examining Beaufort’s historical collections and touring local sites. Students will evaluate how museums, tour guides, writers, web-designers, and film makers present local history to the general public. Based on their assessment of these historic interpretations, the class will adapt their academic research into projects for a broader audience. These projects may include tour scripts, living history performances, videos, and virtual museum exhibits. As Professor Mullenneaux and her students dive into Beaufort’s history, they will also seek out ways to share their newfound knowledge with the youngest students in the area. The class will lend its time and talent to the Beaufort Historical Association’s Summer Day Camp, held the last week of July and first week of August, by writing history-based scripts for the campers. Nan Mullenneaux is a history and writing professor at Duke University. The course will meet from July 7th - August 8th, with a few remaining spots for any community members who would like to enroll. Please contact the BHA at 252-728-5225 for more information.

In Memory of our friends The Beaufort Historical Association is deeply saddened by the passing of these wonderful

members who generously supported the BHA and its activities. Their contributions enhanced our

educational programs and greatly assisted in helping us maintain and preserve the historic buildings and artifacts that enable us to share this areas important

coastal heritage. They will be missed.
