seek, share, rejoice - associate pastor's reflectionWe will keep listening to Matthew’s gospel almost exclusively during the rest of ordinary time. The Gospel challenges us to go deeper into our spiritual life and work harder on our discipleship. The gospels we will listen to during the 13th and 14th weeks of ordinary time do precisely that. Jesus wants us to think about the importance of God in our lives as well as how open we are to receive him into our minds and hearts.

Matthew chapter 10, 13th week of ordinary time, chal-lenges us to place God fi rst. This gospel passage may sound a little harsh at fi rst.

“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.”

This is the radical nature of the gospel. Jesus does not tone down the conditions of discipleship. If the disciples are truly willing to follow Jesus, they must place him fi rst in their lives. Jesus dares to talk this way because it is only in him that we will fi nd eternal life. To love God more than father and mother does not mean to forget, deny, abandon or hate them. It means to love them with a pure love; it means to love them as God loves them. First, you have to love God, and only after you do, you can share the full-ness of this love with mother and father, with son and daughter.

Has God always been fi rst for you? Refl ect on how often you’ve placed God second in your life. Do you love God more than everything else? Meditate on the importance of God and your faith in him. What are some of the things that seem to be coming between God and you? Consider working on getting rid of those things that separate you from the love of God.

Matthew chapter 11, 14th week of ordinary time, wants us to refl ect on how willing we are to receive God in our lives.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will fi nd rest for yourselves; for my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

We know in today’s world there are many things that weigh us down. It might be personal or social: ill-nesses, sadness, unhappiness, despair, injustice, war, insecurity, violence, climate change, etc. In the face of all those diffi culties, Jesus is offering us a differ-ent view, inviting us to open our minds and hearts to him. This is why we have to respond to his compel-ling invitation, come to me… and I will give you rest. He wants us to have “rest,” which is fulfi llment or the achievement of joy. If we join in Jesus, if we come to him, we are joining in the Father’s eternal joy so that our burdens might be lighter.

Do you always come to Jesus? Think about the times you’ve failed coming to him. What is the heaviest burden in your life? Ask God to help you carry that burden so you may have rest in him. God is always there, waiting for you, you might consider visiting him any Friday during adoration at OLPH.

Each Fourth of July we celebrate our freedom and independence. We count our blessings to live in such a wonderful nation. There is so much for which to be thankful. As we celebrate with parades, fi reworks, pic-nics, and family gatherings, we also need to remem-ber that we are a nation under God with liberty and justice for all. Make sure you thank God for the great country we have inherited.

July 1st marks the beginning of the fi scal year and with that comes many changes. We welcome the new members of the Parish Pastoral Council: Tim Daniels, Maria Grable, Martha “Marty” Guerrero, Cindy Moody, and Bob Pirsein. We are blessed to have them as leaders in our parish community. We thank Shannon Dowdle, Greg Bedell, Elizabeth Hoshaw, Nancy Detlefsen and Dave Ludden, who have fi nished their terms; their talent and dedication have been blessings to us all.

We are thrilled to welcome Randy McGraw as our new youth minister; his passion for the youth will bring great blessings for the parish.

Nancy Schwider, who served as Director of Parish Operations for ten years, is retiring this month. We thank her for all she has done for OLPH and wish her the best in retirement. Fr. Boland is delighted to announce the appointment of James Dollard as the Director of Finance and Operations beginning July 17th.

As we continue our journey of faith, let us give thanks to God for all the blessings he has bestowed upon us, especially for our parish community.

May God remain with you this summer season wher-ever we may be.

Fr. Isaac

Father Isaac Lara

Sharing Ministry: combat summer hunger

Summer HungerNeedy children look forward to the breakfast and lunch schools provide. Summer - a joy to kids in our community - is a time for deepened hunger for kids living on the fringes of our society. Please be mindful of hungry families and donate to our on-going food drive so that the pantries we serve can be ready for this increased need.

God bless you for your consideration of those less fortunate!

Too busy to shop? We’ll do the shopping for you! Mail a donation to:OLPH Needy Family Fundc/o Lou Marohn2132 Fir Street, Glenview, IL 60025

Food will be purchased in case lots to stretch and maximize your donation.

Feed the Homeless at Marquard CenterHelp feed the homeless at Marquard Center on Sunday, July 30. We welcome donations of fresh fruit, cookies and candy, which can be delivered to the Parish Center (former convent) porch that Saturday. We welcome volunteers who would like to help in preparing the meal on Sunday morning, here at OLPH, and still others who would like to go down and serve later in the day. We are also in need of donations to offset the cost of the meal.

Contact Terri Guercio, 857.729.5916 or [email protected].

Urgent Need for a Household NecessityToilet paper should not be a luxury, but it is for many needy people. Please consider toilet paper and other hygiene products when shoppping for Sharing.

Operation Open Door

Emergency Brown Bag Meals for the HomelessHungry, homeless people come to the rectory doors and visit the parish food pantries of our four sharing parishes daily in search of food.

Our Sharing Parishes are often able to respond with brown lunch bags fi lled with non-perishable food provided by OLPH. These easy-to-assemble bags are donated by individuals, families, and groups.

Bags contain: pre-packaged tuna or chicken salad with crackers, trail mix, peanut butter or cheese and crackers, 100% juice in box or can, dried fruit, plastic spoon and napkin, optional: candy, power bars, and granola bars. Larger sized lunch bags work best. Contact Julie for more information at 847.909.0661.

Volunteer OpportunityIn July, Catholic Charities will distribute Illinois State discount coupon booklets to qualifying seniors. The coupons can be redeemed at participating farmers’ markets for fresh produce.

This year, we’re having seniors make an appointment to come in, provide their proof of income and identity, and receive the booklets. We need several volunteers to process the large number of people scheduled. The distribution will be held Monday, July 17 to Thursday, July 20 at the Des Plaines Catholic Charities offi ce.

The current openings include:

Mon., July 17, 9:00 – 10:00 amTues., July 18, 9:00 – 10:00 amWed., July 19, 9:00 – 10:00 am & 3:00 – 4:00 pmThurs., July 20, 9:00 – 1:00 pm (later times may also need to be staffed)

The seniors look forward to getting the coupons and are very appreciative.

Please contact Catholic Charities if you're able to help. Contact Tony Buttitta at [email protected] or Denise Yonkers at [email protected] or by phone at 847-376-2101.

OLPH Devotions Ministries

Did you miss out on the Consecration to Jesus through Mary program in March?

We will be offering it again at OLPH in Winter 2018; however, there is another option if you'd like to experi-ence it sooner and are considering the Consoling the Heart of Jesus fall program. St. Norbert’s parish is offering 33 Days to Morning Glory from Thursday, July 20 to August 22 (7-8:30 pm) at St. Norbert Church in Northbrook. To register and purchase materials, contact St. Norbert’s parish offi ce at 847-272-7090.This is a great opportunity to get to know people in our grouping!

Please join us Saturday, July 22 at 9:30 a.m., in McDonnell Hall as Fr. Boland speaks about “St. Francis, Pope Francis and Renew My Church”.

The Francis Effect; approaching his fi fth year, how is Pope Francis changing the Church? The presentation and conversation will explore the impact Pope Francis is having on the universal Church and the world. We will recall the context out of which he was elected and the challenges he has faced. We will focus on how the vision of Pope Francis is inspiring the Renew My Church initiative here in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Renew My Church is an initiative led by Cardinal Cupich to foster vitality in all our par-ishes. The initiative will develop strategic planning so that our future will be effective and deliberate in building up the Kingdom of God.

EVOLVE Ministry with Fr. Boland

Consider a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land • October 2018Fr. Tom Hickey, our former pastor, will be leading a ten-day tour of the Holy Land in October 22-31, 2018.

To visit the land of our Jewish ancestors and Jesus himself helps our faith come alive. We are able to read the scriptures with a new sense which some call the fi fth gospel – the land. Space is limited. Brochures are avail-able in the parish offi ce. An informational meeting will be held in the near future.

Currently, many groups are traveling to the Holy Land. If the situation changes, the trip will be cancelled.

Retreat for Women, September 16-17All women of the parish are invited to our next Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) weekend at Bellarmine Retreat House in Barrington, IL. This is a special time for you to set aside for faith enrichment and personal growth.

“The CRHP retreat always caught my eye - however, I had never been on a retreat nor given it much thought. After going back to school, passing my nursing boards and launching a new career, I felt so grateful to God. Surely I could spend one night away as a ‘thank you’ for all His blessings! What I did not realize was that it was not so much me giving gratitude, but rather me receiving the most beautiful gift of all - a reNewed relationship with our amazing God - and for that I am so incredibly grateful! The weekend offers a peace - the peace that can only come from our Father’s remarkable love.”

-Mary Maginot
