Washington District [email protected] September 2013 August 18, 2013 Dear Friends, In the 28 plus years I have served Jesus as a United Methodist pastor, I have been privileged to be a part of some great churches and serve alongside some awesome pastors. Some of them were women. Others were men. Some were Ordained Elders and others were Licensed Local Pastors. Every one of them taught me something too. One pastor taught me something that has especially come to mind recently. He said, “There are times when life is like drinking water from a fire hose. Lately, as I have begun to learn more about the scope of my ministry as your new Superintendent, I have felt that way. As Eric and Tara transition to serve First UMC in Butler, I can’t help but imagine at times it’s also how they feel. It’s why I hope you will continue to pray for them. It’s also why I need you to pray for my wife, Karen and for me. While September 1 st is my first “official” day on the District, it does not appear we will move into the District parsonage before the week of September 9 th . I have met with the District Superintendency Committee whose help and care have meant a great deal to me and to Karen. Part of the work we did together as a Committee was to set the date and location for the Installation service. The service is scheduled for Sunday, October 13 th at 6:00 PM at Avery United Methodist Church. I hope you and members of your church family can come. Karen and I would sure love to see you there. It’s also been my joy to meet with Collette who, in many ways, has taken me by the hand and helped me see down the road a bit. I’m grateful to her and grateful to God for her. I anticipate relying on her a great deal to help me carry out my work. I will rely on you as well. Eric, as you might imagine, has also been a tremendous help. In the midst of everything he and Tara have going on right now, Eric has made time to meet with me, review files, write and call all in an effort to help me get off to a good start. Eric has done all of this while insuring continuity of care for the pastors, families and churches he has come to love. 1

Dear Friends,In the 28 plus years I have served Jesus as a United Methodist pastor, I have been privileged to be a part of some

great churches and serve alongside some awesome pastors. Some of them were women. Others were men. Some were Ordained Elders and others were Licensed Local Pastors. Every one of them taught me something too. One pastor taught me something that has especially come to mind recently. He said, “There are times when life is like drinking water from a fire hose. “

While September 1st is my first “official” day on the District, it does not appear we will move into the District parsonage before the week of September 9th.

The last week of August will find me in North Carolina for a week-long orientation for incoming Superintendents. Once I return we’ll be making final preparations to land at our new address. My mother, Shirley, who I also look forward to your meeting, will be a part of your new District parsonage family. My mom is 84 and in Hospice care. Presently, we are working with Forbes Hospice to provide care once we arrive. Please pray for her in the midst of the changes she finds herself experiencing. As you pray, give thanks that, in the midst of everything we go through and experience in our lives, our God is a God whose “grace really is sufficient” and whose promise to meet our needs (Karen and I both have some stories to tell about how God has met ours’!) is a promise God is faithful to keep! With appreciation and love in Christ, Brad

Summit Sessions:Conversations on the Summit of God’s Urgent Call to Mission and Ministry

These “Summit Sessions” will be a 75-minute time of conferencing between the church or charge and the District Superintendent, Eric Park. During the first half of the session, Eric will offer a presentation that will illuminate a portion of his vision for the ministry of the local church in 2013. The second half will be a time of open dialogue—about specific portions of Eric’s presentation or anything else that those present wish to raise with the District Superintendent.

The Summit Sessions are NOT Church Conferences. (We will be holding Cluster Church Conferences in November.) No votes will be taken and no minutes will be recorded. No advance preparation is required on the part of the pastor or the church/charge (other than prayer). The Summit Sessions are simply an opportunity for the District Superintendent to experience a time of vision-casting and dialogue with the individual churches and charges on the Washington District.

ALL CHURCH MEMBERS (AND CHURCH ATTENDERS WHO ARE NOT MEMBERS) ARE INVITED AND ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND!

**NOTE: Session will be held in the UNDERLINED church. Please contact the District Office IF MUST change dates or church where the session is to be held.

Finding our Mentors: Being Women in a New World of OptionsSeptember 22-24, 2013

This event begins with dinner at 5:30 on Sunday, September 22, continuing through lunch on Tuesday, September 24.

What an awesome time we live in as women these days!  Women are assuming roles and privileges previously available only to men, and it's exciting and wonderful to watch talented women achieve success and personal blessing.  Let's get together and discern what God might be calling us to do or become as women of faith!  We'll look at the stories of powerful women, women young, women old, women visionary, women servants, women prophets... We'll look at each life story with an eye towards gathering mentors around us that will encourage holy movement in every facet of our lives.

So come away to Olmsted in September for the Fall Women’s Spirituality Retreat. The retreat is a great opportunity for study, renewal, and fellowship. The retreat this year will be led by Rev. Pam Gardner who serves as the pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church in Erie, Pa.

Olmsted Manor Retreat Center  “IN A GOOD LIGHT”

Fall Photography PLAYSHOPThis event begins with lunch on Wednesday October 23 continuing through lunch on Friday, October25.

The GOAL of the In a Good Light Photography Retreat is to bring together both physical and spiritual seeing in a way that deepens both.

A Playshop? Pastor Dean’s photography “playshop” is a creativity-oriented version of a “photography workshop.” We’ll playfully look at the world around us and explore ideas for framing up pictures that have emotional and visual appeal.

Equally important, we will explore a “theology of seeing” and our response to what we see. As we look keenly at God’s material world we may find fresh visions filling the “eyes of our heart.”

Leader: Retired Butler District Superintendent and photography enthusiast, Dean D. Ziegler 1.0 CEU credit available upon request

What to Bring: Digital Camera, any interchangeable lenses (not necessary) Tripod (highly recommended) Outdoor clothing, raingear and sturdy hiking, or rubber boots for dewy or wet vegetation and small

stream navigation. Notebook or electronic tablet for registering thoughts, reflections and personal notes. Laptop computer with program for minor photo editing, flash drive and/or disks for image transfer Further details will be sent to registrants
