MONTHLY BEACON Volume 10, Number 12 December 2017 Sharing the Light and the Love of Our Lord OLIVET CHILDRENS CHRISTMAS PROGRAM A Forever BirthdaySaturday, December 16 2:00 p.m. Christmas is a joyful season for most of us. For others it is a time of deep despair. There are times in everyones life when the Christ- mas Season involves coping with the pain of broken relationships, the insecurity of unem- ployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation, or the first Christmas without a beloved family member. This worship will remind you that you are not alone. God is present for those who struggle and grieve. Gods light still shines in the darkness. If you are hurting, alone, or feeling blue this Christmas Season, this worship is for you. We will hold a Blue Christmas Service on Saturday, December 16, at 5:30 p.m. in place of our normal worship service. This service will have a more quiet, somber feel than a traditional Christmas worship service. Within the worship service you will have an opportunity to lift up the name of your deceased loved one and light a candle in remembrance of them. We encourage you to invite friends and family members to attend with you to remember your loved ones and to share in the hope and promise made possible in Christ Jesus our Lord. CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS

PROGRAM

“A Forever Birthday”

Saturday, December 16

2:00 p.m.

Christmas is a joyful season for most of us. For others it is a time of deep despair. There are times in everyone’s life when the Christ-mas Season involves coping with the pain of broken relationships, the insecurity of unem-ployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation, or the first Christmas without a

beloved family member. This worship will remind you that you are not alone. God is present for those who struggle and grieve. God’s light still shines in the darkness.

We encourage you to invite friends and family members to attend with you to remember your loved ones and to share in the hope and promise made possible in Christ Jesus our Lord.

son, let us clearly hear the words…for you. May we have the heart of that young man when he realized that the gift was “for you” (for him) and he was over-come with joy and thanksgiving. May each of us hear the announcement of the angels and realize that our Savior, Jesus the Christ, was born for the world and all people; however, Jesus was also born “for you.”

It is my hope and my prayer that we all remember that Jesus is “for you.” He is for you in the midst of

what you are going through right now in your life. He is for you to bring healing and restoration into your life. He is for you as He ac-cepts you as you are and leads you to a new and abundant life in Him. He is for you – yesterday, today and for all eternity.

Please join me this Christmas sea-son in hearing the promise of God for our lives…that Jesus is for you. May we all receive and accept this gift from God with wonder, amaze-ment and joy!

Your friend in Christ,

Pastor Dave

From the desk of Pastor Dave “This very day in King David's hometown a Savior was born for you.

He is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11

A young man came up to me after worship and asked if he could really keep the Bible that was in the hymnal rack. He wanted to make sure that what we announce each worship service … “that if you need a Bible, the one you hold in your hands is for you” … he wanted to know if the “for you” meant him also. I told him yes and he was overjoyed to receive the Bible. This young man is not a member of our church, but attends one of our Bible studies and is part of our Re-covery community. A course of events unfolded in his life and he needed to enter into rehab; when he came back one of the first things that he did was to come up to me with that Bible in his hands. With tears in this young man’s eyes he thanked us for providing him with the Bible. He told me that he read it every day when he was in rehab; he said that the Bible – the word of God — saved his life when he was in that rehab unit. He wanted to extend his thanks to us for the gift of the Bible.

From the gift of a Bible a young man came to under-stand not only is the Bible “for you,” but the Son of God, our Savior and Lord, is also “for you,” for him, and for all of us.

As we approach Christmas, we once again hear the proclamation of the angels…“This very day in King David's hometown a Savior was born for you. He is Christ the Lord.” In the midst of this very busy sea-

From the desk of Pastor Andrew

Pastor Andrew

So much of our Christian journey is being reminded of and returning to the “faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people” (Jude 1:3). Our busy and hectic lives can so easily draw us away from the life-giving truth and blessings of God. I believe prayer is the gift that renews and sustains our relationship with our heavenly Father through all the ups and downs of life.

I have a revolving file of favorite prayer quotes from people who are further along on the journey than I am. Let me share a few of them with you in the hopes that you are also inspired by these prayer warriors and their dedication to the Lord. I’ve added my personal reflections on a few of them (in italics).

“I start the day on my knees with the Lord. I end it that way. And oftentimes I’ll be studying and think, ‘It’s time for me to ask the Lord about something here.’ It’s the key to everything.” ~ Charles Stanley (note: Stanley to pastor and preach in his 80’s).

“There has never been a spiritual awakening in any country or locality that did not begin in united prayer.” ~ A.T. Pierson (note: The Word of God in 2 Chronicles 7:14 confirms this: “if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”)

“If you are strangers to prayer you are strangers to power.” ~ Billy Sunday

“Shall I give you yet another reason why you should pray? I have preached my very heart out. I could not say any more than I have said. Will not your prayers accomplish that which my preaching fails to do? Oh dear friends! Let us agonize in prayer.” ~ Charles H. Spurgeon (note: Spurgeon, called “the Prince of Preachers,” discovered early on that his preaching, as eloquent as it was, would have no impact apart from the Spirit of God bringing conviction and truth to the listeners.)

“Do not strive in your own strength; cast yourself at the feet of the Lord Jesus, and wait upon Him in the sure confidence that He is with you, and works in you. Strive in prayer; let faith fill your heart--so will you be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.” ~ Andrew Murray

“Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble. But since the power of prayer is in the one who hears it and not in the one who says it, our prayers do make a difference.” ~ Max Lucado

“We please God most, not by frantically trying to make ourselves good, but by throwing our-selves into His arms.” ~ AW Tozer (note: Tozer was a pastor and author who wrote his books and ser-mons literally on his knees believing only God’s Spirit could make his ministry fruitful and effective.)

“To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” ~ Martin Luther

“The Christian life is not a constant high. I have my moments of deep discouragement. I have to go to God in prayer with tears in my eyes, and say, 'O God, forgive me,' or 'Help me.’” ~ Billy Graham (Note: one of the biggest blessings of prayer is that God invites us to come to Him as we are, not as we think we “should be.”)

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanks-giving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understand-ing, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” ~ Apostle Paul in Philippians 4 (note: Philippians is regarded as Paul’s most joyful letter but was written from a jail cell! Paul’s joy came from his relationship with God, not his circumstances.)

Lord, continue to make us into a people of prayer!

“Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you” (Psalm 25:5).

From the Hospitality Team

The Hospitality Team is as busy as ever! Please watch the sign up tables for upcoming events such as: Cookie Walk and Advent by Candlelight! Let me tell you a little bit about each of these events so that you can plan to attend and enjoy fun, fellowship and some wonderful tastes of this coming Christmas Season.

Cookie Walk

Our Cookie Walk has been an Olivet tradition for many generations. Homemade cookies, bars, candy and so many other Christmas treats will be offered for sale on December 2, 7:30-10:00 a.m. for $7.00 per pound. As you enter the Fellowship Hall you will be greeted by Santa Clause and a Helper who will provide you with a tray on which you can pick and choose from the beautiful 24-foot display of Christmas goodies. In addi-tion, you will be able to purchase family favorites such as sandbakkels, lefse, krumkake, as well as assorted plated goodies.

But WAIT!!! Olivet's Cookie Walk is more than just cookies! Take a stroll past Mable's Table, and find some great prices on some great Christmas items for gift giving or to decorate your home! When you are done with shopping take time to have a seat and enjoy a beverage in our "Broken Cookie Café." Santa Clause will be in attendance to greet you and get you in the spirit to enjoy Jesus’ Birthday.

The Cookie Walk sign up table is ready for you to stop by and check out the great opportunities to get into the Christmas Spirit.

Advent by Candlelight

Advent by Candlelight is being presented for the second year on December 9 from 1-3 p.m. We invite all ladies young and old to enjoy an afternoon of Christmas Joy! The event is free of charge and will be held in the Celebra-tion Chapel in the new Olivet addition. The Advent Wreath story will be shared, along with readings and many old favorite Christmas carols for you to sing.

After our program, we will have a time of hospitality and wonderful Christmas appetizers. Please take time to relax and enjoy a few hours away from the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping.

KIDS’ CHURCH UPDATE Season's greetings everyone! With December rolling in, it quite liter-ally is "the most wonderful time of the year" as we prepare to cele-brate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ in Kids’ Church! In November, the K-5th grade kids focused on Gratitude, and they are learning so much! In the Pre-K class, we worked on the Ten Commandments, and the most important rules that God set for us. It has been kept on a simple, age appropriate level, and the kids have received the message well. Along with that, we worked on a Recipe for Thanks! Which includ-ed four major things that when they are combined, gives us every-thing we need to be thankful: The Bible, Prayer, People, and Food & Water. The kids had a great re-sponse to the message and recipe every week.

This year we will be trying some-thing a little differ-ently with the Christmas Pageant and will be holding it the Saturday be-fore Christmas. So, on December 16th at 2:00 p.m., please don't miss the opportunity to come and hear all the little kids sing, and perform this wonderful pageant put together by our very own, and tal-ented, Melanie Wuensch. Somehow, every year, Melanie has a way of outdoing her previous year, and rocking an amazing script filled with the love of God and bringing the story to life for children. All of December in Kids’ Church, we will be re-hearsing our parts and preparing our costumes. Parents, please mark your calendar for one final dress rehearsal on Friday, Decem-ber 15, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. All of your Pre-k-5th grade kids will be

CHURCH on Sunday, December 24, or Sunday, December 31, so that we can all enjoy fellowship and worship with our own families during this season.

I want to close off this month with a HUGE THANK YOU! All of you have continued to be so welcom-ing of all of the kids. So many of you have been so giving of your time, resources, prayers or dona-tions. None of this goes unnoticed, and Melanie and I want to truly thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We couldn't do it without this church and faith army. It truly takes a village, or in our case, a congregation, to help make things run smoothly. THANK YOU!

Blessings to everyone during this holiday season!

fed dinner at 5:30 p.m.—PLEASE do NOT arrive earlier—and will be ready for pick-up promptly at 8:00 p.m.

We also invite families to bring your younger kiddos who are not in the program to the nursery. We do ask that you feed them prior to coming—due to safety issues, we will not be feeding in-fants, unless it is a bottle. We want to use this time of year to bless KC families and allow their parent(s)/guardians a dinner out, time to Christmas shop, or just for some quiet relaxation, house cleaning, etc. This season can be crazy, but please use this as a gift from the KC family to you. Along with the Christmas program, we may have a special visitor arrive, as we celebrate the "Forever Birthday" for Jesus. It will be something you don't want to miss!

We have recruited a few new faces for teaching and shep-herding in Kids’ Church and they are all doing a fantastic job; however, we are always in need of more assistants. There may be some changes coming with the Pre-K classes, so if anyone has a pas-sion for working with children aged 2-5, please indicate that on the back of your

worship card, or email the office. I am looking forward to some of these changes. Stay tuned for that coming up next month!

On Sunday, December 17, we in-vite all of the Kids’ Church and Christmas program kids back to Kids’ Church for a short video, activity and lesson on the Advent season, and this will close our calendar year in Kids’ Church. There will be NO KIDS’

Youth Ministry at Olivet continues to be a vibrant and exciting place to be! As our Confirmation youth con-tinue to learn about the New Testament and our High School youth dig into various topics about how to live the Christian life, every week brings a night full of energy and potential.

It was cold and rainy on November 1, but the Confirmation and High School Youth would not be deterred! We set out to serve our congre-gation by raking leaves and assisted seven households with their fall chores. Thanks to all the adult leaders who drove and the kids who dug deep and showed the Love of Christ in action! What a blessing for all of those who were able to lend a small helping hand.

We are looking forward to two Olivet members coming to share their testimony at the end of November and early December as a part of our Faces of Faith series. It is meaningful for our young people to hear inspiring words from faithful Christians!

We continue to look for those who would be willing to share a talent or gift with our young people during our Life Together sessions 5:30-6 on Wednesday nights. All it takes is a half hour of time (perhaps two weeks in a row) to share a hobby or skill and a love for being around energetic young people! If you feel the Spirit’s urging, contact Patrick Strain (608-332-8257) to find a time that will work for you!

Finally, we continue to ask for your prayer support. Our young people are on the front lines of ministry, facing all the challenges the post-modern world has to offer. As our culture moves into “the Holiday Season,” pray that we will all be bold to proclaim the true Reason for the Season: let us demonstrate in our words and actions that the Messiah who came into the world is alive and well and living in and through us. Let us reach out in love, let us serve one another in humility and embrace the call to bring Christ to all.

This year the names on our Giving Tree have been given to Olivet by the La Crosse Salvation Army. Since the children whose names appear on each paper mitten will be supplied with toys by the La Crosse Area Jaycees, the Salvation Army has asked Olivet to help with buying new clothes for these children. If you wish to include an additional “fun” item—book, toy, lotion, etc.—please package your items together into one gift so it is easier for the Salvation Army to distribute the gifts. Gifts need to be returned to church by December 10.

Thank you to everyone who filled a shoebox and or made a donation to cover postage. Olivet filled 94 shoeboxes that will be shipped overseas to be opened and enjoyed by the recipients. When we get word on which country our shoeboxes went to, we will let you know!

Prayer is not based on the words spoken, it’s about lifting our hearts to God who can be trusted. It’s not about religious sounding phrases, since tears and groans often receive the strongest responses. Hebrews 5:7 tells us while Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because of his deep rev-erence for God.

We welcome all who feel led to join us. We meet in the library from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesdays to pray for the prayer concerns of our faith community here at Olivet. This includes your prayer requests at the weekend services that you write on the Connection Cards found in the pew racks, as well as any prayer requests that come in through the office, by your permission.

Colossians 4:2—“Don’t be weary in prayer, keep at it; watch for God’s answers and remember to be thankful when they come.”

When God answers your prayers, please let us know so we can join you in giving God all the glory. Thank you.

Communion served: 2nd and 4th weekends

of each month and

every Sunday at 8:00am

All are welcome to receive communion at Olivet.

Communion is served by intinction (dipping of the wafer into the grape juice). Gluten-free wafers and individual servings of grape juice are also available.

Hospital Visits

Due to HIPPA privacy laws and changes at our local hospitals, we are unable to verify your stay at the hospital, even if you list Olivet as your church.

If you or a family member are hospitalized, please call or have a friend or family member call the church office at 783-1484 to let us know of your hospitalization and your room number so we can provide pastoral care.

Loop System at Olivet

Olivet is equipped with a loop sys-tem in the Sanctuary. You will benefit from this if you wear a hearing aid with the T-coil feature.

In 1 Thessalonians 5, Paul writes, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up...Encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” God has called us all to build up and encourage one another.

The joy of Christmas can turn into a time of painful loneliness and emptiness for those who have suffered a loss, or who are going through a difficult time. But help is available.

Think Stephen Ministry

You are the front lines of a caring ministry at Olivet. Throughout the holidays, as you meet and greet those around you, here at Olivet or out in the community, think Stephen Ministry. If you see people who are downcast or struggling through difficult times, think Stephen Ministry.

Tell them about our ministry at Olivet where they can receive the extra love and care they need to make it through the challenge or crisis they are facing.

For those who are experiencing a really difficult time, our Stephen Ministers can provide the special encouragement, care, and support they need until they are past the crisis. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care. They will listen, care, encourage, pray with and for you and support you through the holidays and as long as your need persists.

If you or someone you know is hurting, please speak with one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders to see how one of our Stephen Ministers could help.

In August of 2014, Emma’s mom Violet passed away. During her journey to her final home, I sang to her because I sang to my grandparents when they were in hospice care and I knew that it brought them comfort. I never thought that I would in-spire Emma to start a new ministry. For four years now, Emma and I have been visiting hospice patients and members of Olivet to bring them comfort as they go through their hospice journey. Eventually, we started singing to members that were sick and in need of comfort. Neither one of us realized the impact that it would have on those people or the impact that it would have on us.

After missing an opportunity to sing for a member of Olivet as his journey with can-cer came to an end, God stirred my heart and I told Emma that I wanted to make our ministry known to everyone at Olivet so that we could offer this service as much as possible to everyone who was in need of it.

I am so excited to announce that Emma and I are offering our ministry, Healing in Song or (H.I.S) to everyone at Olivet! This will be a free ministry and open to anyone who is battling an illness, going through hospice care, in home care, in the hospital

A New Ministry at Olivet Healing in Song (H.I.S)

or have family members in need of comfort. All that we hope for is that we can bring you and your family comfort and healing through music as you deal with life’s struggles.

It’s been quite the process, involving a lot of prayer to get this going! After talking with Emma and Pastor Dave, we are offer-ing cards with our contact information on them that Pastor Dave, Pastor Andrew, the office and both Emma and I will have available. Since Emma and I have day jobs that keep us busy, we would love to set up a time to come to you in advance, so please email us as soon as you are in need and we will find a time that fits with both of our schedules. We are so excited to be offering this to everyone and spreading the love and comfort of our Lord as we do so. If you have any questions about Heal-ing in Song, feel free to come and talk with Emma or me.

As we are approaching year-end: A Reminder Regarding IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVERS

It was back in December, 2015, that the IRA Charitable Rollover Act was passed by Congress. This act permanently extended the provision for individuals age 70½ and older to be allowed to make tax-free distri-butions from individual retirement accounts (IRAs) to a qualified charitable organization. The treatment continues to be capped at a maximum of $100,000 per taxpayer each year. An IRA rollover is a tax-exempt distribution from the IRA. The amount transferred can be used to meet the donor's required minimum distri-bution. Amounts in excess of $100,000 must be included in income but may be taken as an itemized charita-ble deduction, subject to the usual AGI annual caps for contributions.

For those of you who are 70 ½ and older, an IRA Charitable Rollover may especially be beneficial to you if . . . 1) you have significant assets in an IRA, or 2) you do not itemize deductions for income tax purposes, or 3) you earn enough to have part of your deductions phased out.

If you qualify for this tax benefit, contact your financial advisor to find out how to make this possible. We would appreciate you keeping Olivet in mind as a recipient should you decide to pursue this option.
