The rewards for success are considerable, the cost of

error, catastrophic. It does not require the skills of

an accountant to work out that one major disaster,

in financial terms, would pay for training, probably

worldwide, possibly forever – the cost in human terms,

immeasurable.

EMBEDDED IN THOUGHT AND ACTION

You cannot put a price tag on safety, only on accidents.

At Maersk Training the foundation of all the learning

processes across the five main industry-focused

departments is in creating a safety culture. Out there on

the platforms and rigs safety is paramount. It is a culture

so embodied into the workplace that it is the primary

thought in everything we do.

UNIVERSALLY ACCEPTED

Having put safety firmly in its place we turn to

productivity and effective work procedures, witnessing

how they improve in a safe work environment. Much of

what we do is aimed at how the individual contributes

to the team. We are leaders in striving for uniform

and universal work practices. During human factor

training we want to improve team communication and

cooperation in order to establish best possible situational

awareness which is a key element in making effective and

deliberate decisions with full awareness of consequences

and effects of individual and team actions.

PREPARING FOR THE UNLIKELY

With the new simulator complex at MOSAIC in Svendborg

rig crews can, on an unprecedented level, gain access

into areas which in real life they should never wish to

meet. It is a training arena which tests participants to the

limit, so that should they be unfortunate enough to find

themselves in a real situation, they would have the skills

at hand to take the correct action.

TASTE THE SEA

The facilities on offer at the new second phase in the

Maersk offshore simulation complex story are, we

believe, unique to the industry. With the original complex

concentrating on the offshore world, the new complex

opens the door to a level of cross-communication, idea-

sharing and training scenarios previously unavailable.

For the first time supply vessel officers and rig crews

can perform integrate manoeuvres in life-like scenarios

generated by an army of more than 300 computers and

then meet up and share a debrief over a coffee. Simulation

so real you can almost taste the sea.

facing the challengePower, plastics, propulsion; today’s world is driven by the resources drawn from evermore challenging depths. The exploration industry has faced each of the mounting challenges of finding and extracting the oil and gas with commitment and courage – from land, to offshore, to the depths, rigs have drilled, men toiled.

MOSAIC I & IIoffshore simulation complexa new age of training

We are about to witness a major advancement in training

for the oil and gas industry.

In 2010 the opening of the Maersk Simulation and

Innovation Centre generated a whole new training

world for the officers of supply vessels. In MOSAIC I, a

bank of 120 computers, using naval architect drawings,

accurately creates every function of over 70 vessels,

allowing complex manoeuvres and life-like scenarios to

be enacted in the finest detail.

Now this world class facility has been extended to

everyone who works on a rig. MOSAIC II is a twin building

not only joined to the original by a walkway, but also by

the ability to create for the first time a training arena

which can represent just about any real-life situation.

Operating in the semi-spherical drillers’ cabin or in a rig

control room on a hydraulic motion platform, connecting

with an engine room and offshore crane. Exercises can

include supply vessels and anchor personnel; never has

training through simulation come so close to reality.

• Well control – IWCF & IADC

• Team-based training for surface and deepwater

operations

• Dynamic Positioning for rigs and vessels

• Bridge and control room operations

• Rig move and jacking

• Ballast and stability

• Emergency response training

• Rig crew response management

• Crane training

TEAM-BASED TRAINING

A complex operating room run on technical competences

alone is like running a car without the correct oil. The

human factor provides the right oil. That’s why we have

turned our attention to making sure that when people

come together in the workplace they are more than a

crew, they are a team. There is no time to get to know

individual work practices in a crisis or stress provoking

situation; you have to be able to rely on others to do things

exactly as you would expect them to be done.

The new offshore simulation complex opens the door to

interdepartmental cooperation on technological and

human issues at previously unheard of levels. On jack-up,

semi-sub or drill ship or platform we create scenarios

based on case studies and put participants into stress

arenas we hope they won’t face in real life.

HIGH PRESSURE/HIGH TEMPERATURE

For a number of years we have organised HPHT seminars,

for oil companies, contractors and involved third parties.

Normally attended by around 80 people, these have

been rig or well specific. To this we now add the HPHT

Awareness Course. Over two days we go through the most

commonly used procedures from major operators in the

North Sea. These include gas behaviour, hydrates, finger

printing options, well bore breathing and taking a ‘tour’ of

HPHT equipment.

Beyond seminars and courses we also can perform rig

audits and manual reviews for HPHT based on best

practice.

DEEPWATER WELL CONTROL

Striving continually to respond to what the industry

needs, Maersk Training Svendborg developed a unique

Deepwater Well Control course which has been certified

by the International Association of Drilling Contractors

through the Drilling Industry Training Accreditation

System. The five-day course owes its distinctiveness to

the fact that it puts a strong focus on human factors. The

two drilling teams bring back to the rig an awareness

of what working as a team can achieve. Having a ‘Plan

B’ is important but it is vital to know how it is affected

by the actions of ‘Plan A’. The human factor is balanced

by a thorough technical programme, much of which is

conducted on our advanced simulators.

IWCF rotary drilling well control

Over 14 months those sponsored

by companies to start their careers,

continually return to Maersk

Training to develop their skills

and gather knowledge. A total of

19 aspects are covered and these

embrace maritime, people skills,

safety and survival as well as oil

& gas courses. Consequently the

recommended initial education

level includes the Marine Engineer’s

Extended Exam or a similar level of

technical education and we point out

that the availability of trainee posts

is outside Maersk Training’s control.

DURATION: 5 DAYS

Combined Subsea & Surface at Driller

and Supervisor Level

Derrickmen and those in higher

positions spend time in the

simulators learning the procedures

and showing the principles of

surface or subsea BOP stack as

described in the IWCF Rotary Well

Control Surface & Subsea BOP Stack

Certification Syllabus. Over a five-

day course they master well control

to reach IWCF standards and pass

three tests with a minimum score of

70%.

stuck-pipe prevention DURATION: 2 DAYS

The main drive of this course is

in seeking ways to avoid stuck-

pipe. Much of the time is spent in

predicting and reading trends and

in understanding the conditions in

which stuck-pipe might occur. To do

this we look at case scenarios and see

how human factors at vital moments,

such as crew handovers, can often

contribute to occurrence. Aimed

at assistant drillers and higher

positions, it is also of value to those

in supervisory positions onboard

and onshore. The situation beyond

avoidance is covered in a solutions

and freeing methods.

During the course we will:

• Create an environment where

team members challenge

existing practices and suggest or

develop new ones that enhance

operational performance

• Identify and eliminate activities

that have potential to result in

increased non-productive time

• Openly discuss issues that impact

on operational performance

masters of the tow

Even in the most ideal of conditions, rig moves require

a great deal of skill. Introduce the aspects of difficult

subsurface terrain and the unpredictability of weather,

visibility and currents and you have a less than ideal

arena in which to learn how to perform the complex

moves as efficiently and safely as possible.

Now at Maersk Training’s MOSAIC, towmasters and

towmaster trainees can face and meet the fullest of

challenges in a perfectly controlled and reviewable

learning facility. Here they can interact with all parties

involved in the manoeuvres, including the towing

vessels and anchor handlers or anchor assist DP

functionality.

We challenge towmasters with situations such as

controlled penetration, rapid penetration and punch

through. In the control room built on a motion platform

such actions are given further realism. All simulators

areequippedwithactualEIVAsurveysystems.
