Jenny Gray has been teaching recently in our Year 1 class and Cody Stewart, who has been teaching at OPS for the past three years. Cody and his whanau are moving back home to the Bay of Plenty. We thank Jenny and Cody for the support and considerable contribution they have made to our tamariki and staff at Ohakune Primary. We wish them all the best. We welcome for next term Ms Morvern Duncan into Room 6 and Miss Sophie Turney into Room 11. Both teachers are joining us from Wellington and are very excited to join our team. Congratulations Well done to the many participants who were involved in the various inter school events last week. We had two smaller teams who went to Whanganui for swimming and with great results. Our inter school athletics team represented us to a high level and it is always great to get feedback on their enthusiasm, support of each other and the positive representation of our school. We wish the Ruapehu inter-school team travelling to Hunterville this Friday the very best of luck. This team will be combining with Raetihi School to represent as the Ruapehu team. Snow-sports We have received our pricing from RAL for our Term 3 snow sports programme. The expectation is that all our classes have four possible opportunities to participate in class skiing/boarding. Each child is to purchase a season pass for $69 unless they have a season pass or life pass already. The cost for each day will be $20 and this will include the lesson and rental as the base price. If you child has already got gear the price remains the same. As we ran the Fun Run last year, proceeds for this will go towards transport costs. All up the estimated cost will be $150. The children can also use the season pass at any time. Many of our families have automatic payments already set up so please see Donna or Michelle if you would like to take up this option. Lockdown As you can appreciate, since the Christchurch tragedy, we have comprehensively reviewed our Lockdown procedures. From our review, we have identified the needs to create classroom kits, so that every class has the basic necessities to support OHAKUNE PRIMARY SCHOOL Newsletter Phone: (06) 3858384 Email: [email protected] www.ohakuneprimaryschool.co.nz Friday 5 April Gumboot Day. “Where We Stand”

The fairplay principles are an awesome teaching and learning resource that can help our learners to manage themselves and set up expectations for safe and fair game play.

We have been exploring the princoples in our classrooms recently and will continue to use this

language in interacting with our learners.

• Respect the rules • Respect the players • Respect the referees • Respect the equipment

• Everyone has the opportunity to participate

What is a school Board of Trustees?

Every state and state-integrated school in New Zealand has a board of trustees. Boards bring families, communities and schools together to work for a quality education for our children. The board of trustees is a Crown entity. It is the employer of all school staff and sets the school's overall strategic direction. The school's principal is the board's 'chief executive' and manages the school operations in line with the board's policies. What does a Board do?

Each school board of trustees has a very important role in making sure every child at their school is able to reach their highest possible standard in educational achievement.

Here are some of the things Boards do:

Ø Work with the principal and consult with staff, students and the community Ø Set the educational goals and strategic direction of the school Ø Monitor progress and inform parents on how the school is progressing against its annual targets and on the

development of the students Ø Decide how the school's funding will be spent Ø Select the school's principal and support the development of all staff Ø Ensure the school is a physically and emotionally safe place for all students and staff, and is inclusive of and

caters for students with differing needs Ø Oversee the management of staff, property, finances, curriculum and administration.

How do I become a Trustee?

There should be information about who is on the board and how to make contact on your school's website. You can also ask your school about going along to a board meeting to see how it works. The board chair or any other board member can also answer questions about what the board does. Contact your school if you want to find out about standing for election, nominating someone else or voting in the election - they will be happy to help.

Value of the Week Determination

This value is based around persevering in new learning, new relationships, and taking on new experiences. We support our learners by giving them the opportunities to develop the skills through targeted experiences and classroom learning and they are amazing.

Nga mihi. Lisa Clark. Principal

Police Vets The New Zealand Police Vetting Service provides criminal history checks and other relevant information on potential and current employees, volunteers and vocational trainees to Approved Agencies that provide care to children and vulnerable members of society. If you would like to participate in a supporting role within Ohakune Primary we are required to have evidence of a current police vet or submit one for you. Vetting forms are available from the Police Station, online, in enrolment packs, or you can pick one up from the front office. They do take a little time to process (up to 25 days) so if you are keen to participate in the school snow-sports programme in Term 3, please make sure your police vet is up to date (expires every 3 years). You will need to bring with you two forms of identity. We recommend a driver’s licence and passport. All police vets are treated as strictly confidential. The cost is $11.
