Lord Butler’s talk was very

informative. I enjoyed learning

about how different prime

ministers have worked over

the years.

SADE, 13 BRUNO

Lord Butler’s talk was

interesting as he revealed to us

a side to Parliament of which

we rarely get a glimpse. He

spoke of his experiences

in service to many prime

ministers during interesting

times, for example he survived

the IRA bombing while working

for Margaret Thatcher.

WIKTORIA 12 GIANNA

The Friday Speakers Club CJM is launching a new venture called ‘The Friday Speakers Club’ and

Lord Butler, who is to be its patron, was the opening speaker. Lord Butler has

had a stellar career as Head of the Home Civil Service and Cabinet Secretary

to five prime ministers. The students were riveted by his talk which included

anecdotes from his experience of working closely with Margaret Thatcher,

John Major and Tony Blair and his time spent as the Master of University

College, Oxford. He also touched on his report, The Butler Enquiry, which

looked into the Iraq war and the weapons of Mass Destruction. After his talk

he engaged in a lengthy and in-depth question and answer session with the

students on topics ranging from Brexit and Northern Ireland to divisions

within the Tory Party.

After the talk, Mrs McGowan hosted a buffet where the students

had the opportunity to meet and chat to the speaker. To top the event off, the

school library was presented with a copy of Lord Butler’s recently published

biography, Robin Butler: At the Heart of Power from Heath to Blair by Michael Jago.

Convent of Jesus and Mary Language College

MESSAGE FROM MRS L MCGOWAN Welcome to this bumper edition of our Convent Times, as always, packed with events that have happened over the last half term.

Our girls have been so busy in all aspects of Convent life from charity work to sporting achievements to musical performances.

Numerous trips have taken place, both day and residential and our girls have made wonderful contributions to the Catholic life of our school and to the Bicentenary celebrations of the Sisters of the Religious of Jesus and Mary.

We have been very proud to receive the International Schools Award for the second year running and Ms Jaffary was fortunate enough to attend the awards ceremony to collect our trophy. Dr Patel has been named as a Champion within Brent for getting everyone moving with a health and fitness initiative and we are so proud of Samira in Year 13 being awarded a most prestigious title of ‘Inspirational Young Person of the Year’. Her work in local youth politics is astonishing and she is a marvellous role model to all our students.

As I write this, our school has been transformed into a Winter Wonderland as we are getting ready for the most wonderful festival of Christ’s birth. This is an incredibly special time of year and reminds us of the precious gift God gave to us, His only Son.

Wishing you all a very happy and holy Christmas. God bless all our girls and staff and their families.

MRS L MCGOWAN HEADMISTRESS

< Merry Christmas from Convent's newest girls and their mummies - Mrs Peppiatt and Callia; Ms Hodgson and Molly; Mrs Aninakwa and Mya and Ms Habtom and Delina. They can't wait to meet all their Convent sisters and learn the school song! They also told Santa that you have all been very good girls and deserve a wonderful Christmas!

PRIDE OF BRENT AWARDSOur amazing Samira has been recognised by the Pride of Brent Awards, being chosen as the Inspirational Young Person of the Year! Samira is the first female representative of Brent in the UK Youth Parliament and winning this award reflects Samira’s hard work, commitment and passion. Samira's role in inspiring young people includes her mentoring of students at CJM. She has encouraged a fellow student to run, and win, the election for chair of the Brent Anti-Bullying travelled another member of our school

community to run for Brent Youth Parliament. She also organised our school mock general election.

Many politicians, teachers and public figures have a lot to learn from Samira who is not only passionate about what she does but is also on a mission to ensure that disadvantaged girls are recognised and represented in politics.

MS C MCCOMBE, HISTORY TEACHER

(WHO NOMINATED SAMIRA FOR THE

AWARD)

I met Samira when I was in Year 8 through anti-bullying work. Samira inspired me to run for chairperson of Brent’s Anti-Bullying Council. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for her. She is an intelligent, determined young lady. She has helped me throughout my whole school year. I don’t know what I’ll do once she leaves to go to university – no words can express how inspirational Samira has been to me.

Cyber Security

On Friday 6th of October, I had the pleasure of taking a

small group of Year 9 students to attend a Cyber Security

For Girls Workshop at Canary Wharf, run by Barclays Plc.

We had the opportunity to meet two young ladies who hold

top jobs in IT and are in charge of Cyber Security at their

respective law firms - Baker MacKenzie and Mischon De

Reya. It was amazing to learn how to prevent some of the

latest cyber threats such as Ransomware.

As always, our girls were excellent ambassadors. Even in

their excitement, they still found time to remember their

friend, Jessica Ramirez and asked to hold a two minute

silence in her memory. Not only that, they got the other

accompanying school and the workshop providers to join

in. This was truly touching and testimony to the kind-

hearted nature of Convent girls.

MS M MACLEAN-THOMAS, HEAD OF BUSINESS STUDIES

Today was rather eventful and I enjoyed myself a lot. I made friends with students from another school and I learnt a lot more about cyber security. I especially enjoyed pairing microbits with phones to create codes for games.

DENEEKA, 9 NAZARETH

Going on this trip has taught me a lot about the internet and how people can steal our personal information. I also learned new ways of how to stay safe online.

We’re the kids in America Kim Wilde’s words were true in July when 150 British ‘kids’

took over the US university and culture scene for one week - and

two of them were Convent girls!

As part of the Sutton Trust’s Fulbright US Programme we

have been guided in applying to US universities and a summer

school at Yale. We were successful in applying to the summer

school and travelled through 4 states: visiting campuses; meeting

students and admissions officers, and visiting iconic US cultural

sites. On the very first day we

visited Harvard. The stunning

campus was a sight that will

be hard to forget. Every year

there is a Harvard University

Fair held exclusively for the

Sutton Trust students. We had

the opportunity to talk to and

network with the admissions

officers of the universities we

could potentially be applying

to. Our day ended with dinner

in Harvard Square and a three

hour coach journey back to Yale.

We also had the

opportunity to visit Smith

College, America’s oldest

women's college. Its quaint,

small campus in the middle

of Massachusetts was like no

other university we had seen;

they even have their own lake

and botanical gardens. Later,

we visited another liberal

arts college called Skidmore

in Saratoga Springs, New

York State. We also visited

Yale which was invaluable

as we attended a seminar on

university applications from

Yale’s Head of International

Admissions.

Our final day was spent in

NYC. We had campus visits

around Barnard (the women's

college of Columbia) and

Columbia University then had

lunch in Central Park before

visiting the Metropolitan

Museum of Art. We then hopped

onto the coach and made our

way to JFK for our long night

flight back across the Atlantic.

This time next year, we might be

writing to you from a university

in the USA!

DAY OF THE DEAD

I S S U E 7 / W I N T E R 2017

To celebrate Day of the Dead, Year 9 took part in

workshops that reflected upon the meaning of ‘life

and death’.

In Art, English, Food Technology and MFL, the

girls made skulls; wrote cavaleras, cooked delicious

biscuits and produced beautiful paper flowers. In

RE the girls reflected more deeply upon events in

our own lives, and those in the wider world. This

culminated in a ‘Tree of Life’. The ‘leaves’ have

been placed in the Chapel as part of our prayerful

life throughout the month of November. It was a

fantastic day!

MRS A SYLVESTER-CHARLES, LAY CHAPLAIN

It was great to remember our loved ones who have passed during the workshop in St. Claudine’s. Some of my friends cried, but it was a positive thing because it meant that they have someone who loved them and who they loved back. We were all able to recall happy memories, and learned to save and treasure them for as long as we live. I thoroughly enjoyed this day.

KIRSTEN, 9 BETHLEHEM

When we celebrated the Day of the Dead, I really enjoyed making cookies because we had the opportunity to decorate them with colourful icing. They were delicious.

NATALIA, 9 NAZARETH

I enjoyed the painting workshop because we could let out our creativity. It was also good to spend time with friends while we were painting different designs.

Founder’s DayFounder's Day is on 6th of October.

To commemorate the day St Claudine

founded the Congregation of Jesus

and Mary, Year 8 began their day with

a class assembly, sharing with us their

understanding of St Claudine and her values

that are alive today in our school community.

During the day, the girls had the opportunity

to participate in the following workshops: Art,

RE, History, and Geography.

A truly fruitful day ended with Father Terry

Murray celebrating Mass with the whole school

community including our Chair of Governors;

Mr Finnegan. Well done to all of Year 8 - your

energy throughout the day was superb!

MRS A SYLVESTER-CHARLES, LAY CHAPLAIN

I enjoyed learning the St Claudine values in French, which is the language I am currently studying.

SOPHIA, 8 RAFAELA

I most enjoyed the ‘Leap of Faith’ with Mr Grant where we got to decorate our gorgeous posters that reflected the values of St Claudine.

MARIA, 8 TATIANA

When the annual Shoebox Appeal starts our girls rally together to show their love for children around the world who do not have the luxuries that we may have of gifts at Christmas. This year we went above and beyond with 250 boxes!

The RE department's annual competition for the teacher with the most shoeboxes was, as always, a competitive race. We even had some questionable tactics to win (cough, Ms Maguire, cough!). But the RE teacher with the most shoeboxes was Ms Kelly! Well done to all her classes for showing such compassion and generosity.

All who took part deserve a massive pat on the back. A special well done to those who created more than one shoe box: Dacian, 7 Leo, Porsha, 7 Victor, Cheni, 7 Peter, Runita, 10 Fatima, Jessica, 10 Fatima, Aleksandra, 10 Fatima and Catherine, 11 Fourviere and the Year 9 and 12 girls who helped load the boxes for collection.

You should all be very proud.

RE DEPARTMENT

Shoebox Appeal

I enjoyed making two

shoeboxes because I knew it

was going to make not one, but

two children smile.

DACIAN, 7 LEO

I really loved making the

shoeboxes. It gave me a chance

to think about someone else

who is less fortunate than me.

CHENI, 7 PETER

The Shoebox Appeal is a

great cause which you don’t

need to put a lot of money

towards - just filling a shoebox

with treats could illuminate a

child’s day.

CATHERINE, 11 FOURVIERE

I really enjoyed making

the shoeboxes. It helps me

remember how lucky I am to

have all the things I do have in

my life.

EuropeanLanguages Day

As is now customary, European

Day of Languages was

celebrated on September 26th.

Activities across all year groups

were completed during MFL

lessons. Year 9 girls competed

in our very own Convent

Eurovision Song Contest.

Congratulations to Mrs

Mitchell's class who won with

"Papaoutai " sang by Stromae.

As a reward, they will be

watching a film at the Lexi

cinema.

The MFL department also

launched a Breakfast club that

takes place every Friday at

8am in room 603, providing an

opportunity to learn a language,

read a book or listen to music in

a different language. Do come

and join in. It’s great fun!

MS I VJUCIC, HEAD OF MODERN

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Our first experience of the Eurovision Song Contest was amazing. It was really difficult to learn a French song in a short space of time. However, it all paid off and we won. For our effort and talent, we have been awarded a trip to the cinema!

REBECCA & RIFFINE, 9 DAMASCUS

As the current Chairperson of the Brent Anti-bullying

Council, I had the privilege of hosting this year’s Anti-bullying

Conference. All of our ambassadors travelled to Brent Civic

Centre to take part in a workshop called “All Different; All

Equal”. This was presented by me and Samira, the Brent Youth

Representative for Parliament. It was wonderful to interact with

different age groups, and watch other schools’ presentations. I

can’t wait for next year’s conference. It was so much fun

TERRI, 9 DAMASCUS

11

I was impressed to see all the hard work so far to make Brent a bully-free zone, and what the council to aspire to do in the future. I was in awe of our very own Convent girl, Terri, the Chair, who launched the day in front of children and adults! This event spread a powerful message that resonated with me: we are all different and all equal. Well done Terri – you are fab!

LET’S END BULLYING!

International School Award It was a real honour to

receive the International School

Award at the British Council on

behalf of the school and to meet

like-minded people sharing

the same vision and passion

for languages.

Furthermore, it was an

inspirational and rewarding

evening which reminded me that

there is still so much to do and

so much more to be achieved

with languages in order to

inspire our girls to fulfil their

potential.

MS S JAAFARY, MFL TEACHER

Board Games Club Board Games Friday kicked off splendidly this term with a

full house of girls of all ages enjoying their Friday lunchtime

with a range of games including Chess, Scrabble and Snakes

and Ladders. New games were learned, old favourites revisited

and we all had a lot of fun. Make sure to make a note in your

planner. We can't wait to see you there next term!

MS L PEARCE, YEAR 9 CURRICULUM LEADER

12

Convent of Jesus and Mary Language College

I like going to this club because it is always a lot of fun. I get to spend time with my friends and learn how to play new games. It’s always on a Friday in Ms Pearce’s classroom - so do come!

NATALIA, 9 NAZARETH

Urban Scholars Our first day on the program started at Brunel University where students from schools across London gathered to hear the experiences of previous scholars. We were told that all the previous Scholars are now in their first or second year of an undergraduate degree studying Law, Computing, Engineering and Maths.

As the day progressed we were given a tour of the university grounds. We were

even able to see the indoor athletics track where Usain Bolt trained!

The day gave us an insight into what university life is like. The program aims to support us and develop our skills in research, organisation and revision whilst building our confidence and motivation. We cannot wait to attend our second session at Brunel University.

YEAR 9 URBAN SCHOLARS GROUP

I really enjoyed attending

the Urban Scholars program

at Brunel University. We had

the opportunity to meet lots of

people and have a tour of the

campus.

NENEH, 9 BETHLEHEM

Saturday was a new and fun

experience for me. Brunel was a

appreciate the possibility of working with students

from different classes and year groups, which

makes for great cross-fertilisation of ideas and

inspiration.

This special club runs at lunch time on

On Friday 20th October, we had a splash of

pink all over school for our annual ‘Wear It Pink’

Day. Students and staff wore one item of pink,

to raise awareness and money for Breast Cancer

Research. Together, we raised a fantastic amount

which totalled £718.91. Well done everyone!

When you watch our school film on the website,

you can see the swathes of pink proudly worn by

our community showing that we are proudly living

St Claudine’s values.

MRS A SYLVESTER-CHARLES, LAY CHAPLAIN

Convent of Jesus and Mary Language College

Wear it Pink was a time for

supporting those who suffer

from this illness. We enjoyed

wearing our item of pink very

much and happy to support

such a worthwhile charity.

STEPHANIE, 11 RABWEH AND

LAURA, 11 THORNTON

It was good for us to wear

something different. I am happy

that the money we raised will

help other people.

ADRIANA, 11 THORNTON

A retreat is an opportunity to take some time out from the business of school, to reflect on our lives and our relationships with other people and with God.

Our retreat in Felixstowe was from 10th October until the 12th October, the theme was ‘Journeying with Claudine’. We had the opportunity to camp in the grounds of the retirement home of the Religious Sisters of Jesus and Mary.

Our ambition was to encourage the students to work independently as a group, solving any problems they met without adult supervision. The girls had plenty of opportunity to do this, the first being the setting up of the tents!

Our retreat ended with a Eucharistic Service on the Thursday morning, pushing our imaginations to a limit. It was a wonderful experience and a privilege to spend the time with our Year 13 girls.

The trip to Felixstowe was a great opportunity

for us to learn about ourselves in relation to the

values of St Claudine whilst discovering and

showcasing our skills and talents. The camping

was a wonderful experience as many of us had

never been camping before! We were well looked

Hardwick Hall On the 7th of October all students studying history visited an Elizabethan house in Derbyshire where we had the opportunity to understand the fundamentals of the rich architecture conceived at a time of great English success: the Golden Age.

Despite the 3 hour journey, we all enjoyed exploring the country home uncovering the story behind Hardwick Hall. We had the privilege of seeing the long gallery of portraits and tapestries, and the great chamber where we could really grasp the hidden meanings behind the beauty of the room.

Everyone enjoyed weaving through the different rooms and understanding more about the woman behind the impressive structure: Elizabeth of Shrewsbury, whom everyone agreed was an incredible example of Elizabethan Renaissance.

CATHERINE, 11 FOURVIERE

Thank you to all of the

young ladies who went on

the trip; they were excellent

ambassadors for our school.

I would also like to thank

the staff who gave up their

Saturday.

We were so proud to be invited to visit the

Sisters in Felixstowe and attend a very special

Mass to mark the beginning of their bicentenary

year as the RJM was first established by St

Claudine 200 years ago.

A coach load of Convent students, staff

and Governors joined staff and students from

our ‘cousin’ school Thornton College (an RJM

school in Milton Keynes) and very special guests

including a whole stage full of priests. Our very

own Fr Terry was there to support us too! Our

girls had been asked to lead the singing and they

Bicentenarydid this beautifully. Jodie in Year 13 ended the

Mass by singing Ave Maria and brought tears to

the sisters’ eyes.

It was lovely to see so many people there to

mark the celebration and honour the lifetime

of work and dedication the sisters have given

to our faith. The Sisters are very fond of our

Convent as for them this is where it all began

with many of them having lived and worked

here as teachers years ago.

MRS L MCGOWAN, HEADMISTRESS

18

Convent of Jesus and Mary Language College

This was a most memorable day. We met Mrs Freear (the previous headteacher) who told us all about climbing Machu Pichu. We also met many of the sisters, who wanted to know all about us and our school. We were complimented for our singing. My favourite song was ‘Oceans’.

ERIKA, 7 VICTOR

My time in Felixstowe was amazing as we met lovely women and sisters who had attended CJM. It was also great to meet a different Jesus and Mary with a different uniform. The whole day was an amazing experience.

MARIANNA, 11 IPSWICH

I had so much fun. It was a day that will stay with me forever. Everyone was so welcoming. It shows that there is still good in the world.

SHANNON, 7 PETER

On trips like this, it shows how much we can do as a family unit and how much my teachers truly care.

EMMA, 11 THORNTON

The day began with all of us half-asleep waiting for the coach. On the way there we sang hymns and looked out at the beautiful countryside. After Mass, we had lunch and activities. There was a detailed account of St Claudine’s life made into a Bayeux tapestry.

LAYAN, 8 MARGARET

I acquired a lot of knowledge

about how men experienced

the war in the trenches and

what equipment they used.

I also had fun meeting new

people in our dorm rooms and

the food was good.

The trip was amazing and

educational. It allowed me to

how much of an impact it had

on our lives. It taught me to

or bad. Ypres Trip

I S S U E 7 / W I N T E R 2017

I loved visiting the trenches

and the museum because I was

able to learn so much. It was an

eye opening experience and

makes me thankful that I have

this amazing life.

The trip to Ypres in Belgium was a great opportunity for

Year 8 to engage with the events of World War I, a topic they

studied at the start of the year. We were fortunate enough to visit

various cemeteries, where men from Britain and the Empire were

buried. We explored the Flander’s Field Museum uncovering the

experiences of the war and even had the honour of participating in

the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate.

Our girls were the perfect ambassadors and locals praised them

wherever they went. The History Department are looking forward

to next year’s trip already!

Just before half term we went on a trip to Barcelona. It was

a long journey but definitely worth it!

When we arrived, we went to the beach for a little while to

relax and have fun. Over the next two days we went to some very

exciting places; an art gallery (Museo Nacional de Arte Catalan)

and a market where there were many shops and even a park. We

also visited Camp Nou, Barcelona’s football stadium. We stayed

at a lovely hotel and had an amazing time. Thanks to the staff

who took us: Ms Pearce, Mr James, Ms Vigliotti, Ms Smith and Ms

LIA, 8 RAFAELA

Barcelona was a great opportunity to build stronger bonds with friends and work on our Spanish.

St Cecilia’s Concert What a supportive and enthusiastic

community we have here at the Convent! I was

blown away both the talent onstage and the help

offstage. The initiative taken by older students in

guiding less experienced performers through the

process of rehearsal to stage was really wonderful

to witness. Those involved worked incredibly

hard to create a memorable performance for the

180 primary school children and the 150 Year 7

students, as well as a group of proud parents.

Well done - air high fives all round!

MISS E BURGESS, HEAD OF PERFORMING ARTS

I am immensely proud of all the talent on and

off the stage. We all pulled together to create a

memorable afternoon which left many of our

guests enthusiastic about music. “I love music” is

what I heard from many primary school children,

and it was all of us who gave them that feeling.

Well done to all!

MR S DIXON, MUSIC TEACHER

The girls performing were wonderful and some

were extremely talented, providing motivation for all

CONRAD, PARENT OF CAROLINA, YEAR 7.

The concert was inspirational as it showcased the

done and keep it up!

This was an educational

and exciting event, not just

for us but for all YTAs where

we had the opportunity to

incorporate our skills and ideas

into activities. Moreover, Dr

Patel received an award for the

Debate Mate The Debate Mate Launch trip to the

Emmanuel Centre in Westminster was an

exceptional first time experience of debating. It

really opened our eyes and broadened our minds to

look at the bigger picture on topics that affect us as

young people. It also gave us courage to speak out for

ourselves and to ask questions. Our favourite part of

the whole day was watching the show debate. It was

very interesting as it was about lowering the voting

age to 16 years - a very hot topic of interest at the

moment that is important for each and every one

of us at the Convent.
