Greetings and Welcome! It is indeed a great honor to host the Inaugural National HBCU Pre-Law Summit - and to have the opportunity to do so at a historically Black law school is an even greater honor. I am genuinely elated that you have chosen to join us and be an attendee at what will be a truly phenomenal, powerful and historic day of learning and sharing, interacting and connecting especially for aspiring lawyers!

The National HBCU Pre-Law Summit was created to provide a high-quality, game-changing experience specifically for students attending or who have graduated from HBCUs from across the country interested in going to law school and becoming lawyers. What makes this event so

unique is that we not only provide the information that you need regarding law school admission, the law school experience and legal careers; but we directly address the additional challenges and concerns that HBCU graduates face in making the transition to predominantly White institutions (PWI) and we discuss the considerations for those who are thinking about attending one of the six HBCU law schools in our nation.

As an HBCU graduate and a first-generation college graduate, law student and lawyer, I know from my first-hand experience that an event like this would have meant the world to me. I really had no idea of what I was getting myself into and vowed to make sure others behind me would not have to endure what I experienced. That is why it is a blessing to make this opportunity a reality for HBCU students and graduates who are eager to better understand what they will confront and how to best position themselves to be excellent, strategic and competitive applicants, law students and lawyers. You must be prepared, be confident and be ready to excel in highly competitive environments that can sometimes be unwelcoming to African Americans and where our abilities are questioned and we could be made to feel that there is not a place for us. Many of the participants in this event are also graduates of HBCUs and have a special sensitivity to and understanding of the added challenges you must take on and will openly share their hard-learned strategies for success.

Just know that we are all here with one core purpose in mind – we want to let you know what to expect and provide you with the information, resources and connections you need so that you can be well-prepared. In addition to that, we want to encourage and push you to be and do your absolute best. You and our community deserve no less.

This year’s summit will be a wonderful launch to a greatly-needed event.  I am excited about our lineup of prominent keynote speakers, dynamic special guests and amazing panelists, moderators and facilitators. I promise you that if you stay the entire day and take full advantage of everything that this summit has to offer that it will be a game-changer for you. You will have the perspective and information that you need to then take deliberate action and move forward in what promises to be an extraordinarily tough road ahead. However, every single one of us who are a part of the team coming together today to impart knowledge and encouragement have all doubted ourselves, been told we could not do it, and overcome incredible obstacles – yet we have surpassed low expectations and are real-life testaments to what is possible. We did it so it can be done – and you can do it too – if this is what you really want.

We all warmly welcome you to law school and the legal profession – and encourage you to continue to embrace and pull up others who choose to follow this path after you have made it to certain milestones in this journey. Always remember that success is a collective endeavor. We have a vested interest in you. Your success is our success. When we make it, we all succeed. Enjoy the launch of this new summit – and here’s to many impactful years to come! This is just the beginning!

Sincerely,

EvangelineEvangeline M. Mitchell, Esq., Ed.M.Founder & Executive DirectorNational HBCU Pre-Law Summit

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA

School of Law Office of the Dean

September 18, 2014 Welcome to North Carolina Central University School of Law! We are delighted to host the inaugural national HBCU pre-law summit. As we come together at this ground-breaking event to address the unique challenges facing HBCU students and graduates and the issues they may confront in pre-law preparation and post- law school career searches, we are mindful of the rich histories of each of our institutions and their missions Today, we welcome students and graduates, alike, from across the country to hear nationally renowned speakers share information and resources, and to make new connections in their quest to become leaders of tomorrow. There is an enviable amount of knowledge and experience on our campus today and this is a wonderful opportunity for HBCUs to come together to share information and gain knowledge. Over the course of this summit, we will be exploring the vital role that HBCUs play in supporting the community and nation’s underserved populations. In today’s global economy, diversity in the legal profession is ever important and HBCUs, because of their history, are uniquely positioned to provide the skills necessary for success in the legal profession. This summit will invoke discussion regarding issues facing the next generation of students as they seek admission to law school or entry into the legal profession. As one of the six ABA accredited HBCU law schools in the country, we are honored to host this preeminent summit during this season of our law school’s rich history—our 75th Anniversary. Indeed, we are all united in continuing the legacy of being schools of opportunity with rich and brilliant histories: one of racial segregation, adversity, triumph, transition, growth and development. (Janice L. Mills) Again, welcome and thank you for your attendance and commitment to HBCU law schools ensuring diversity in the legal profession. Warmest Regards,

Phyliss Craig-Taylor Dean and Professor of Law

September 18, 2014 National HBCU Pre-Law Summit P.O. Box 631234 Houston, Texas 77263 Dear Students: It is my pleasure to welcome you to Durham, North Carolina. I am the current president of the Capital City Lawyers Association, which is often affectionately referred to as the “Raleigh Black Lawyers.” The CCLA was founded over 30 years ago with a vision of combatting social injustices and educating citizens in our communities on the judicial process and the rule of law. Since its founding, the CCLA has left an indelible footprint on the Raleigh community in a myriad of areas including voter education, registration and mobilization; informing the populace on judicial candidates and elections; hosting free legal clinics; awarding scholarships to deserving law students; and providing social outlets for our members and their clients. I am honored to represent the CCLA in supporting the National HBCU Pre-Law Summit. I would argue that this summit comes at a key time in our history. Recent national events have highlighted the need for capable and socially conscious attorneys and jurists who view society from our vantage point. I am confident that this summit will inspire the next generation of legal architects to pursue degrees and careers in law. The demand for lawyers of color to voice legal concerns important to our communities remains strong. I am also thrilled that this ground-breaking summit is being held at North Carolina Central University School of Law, my alma mater. Just as this edifice has undergone a dramatic modernization and expansion since my time here, so has my affinity for this special place grown through the years. You are to be congratulated for availing yourself of this unique opportunity to learn more about a career in law. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. Sincerely, CAPITAL CITY LAWYERS ASSOCIATION By: Brian O. Beverly

In 2011, Spring Lake, the third largest municipality in Cumberland County, North Carolina, elected Chris V. Rey as their Mayor. At the age of 34, Chris was the youngest Mayor elected in Spring Lake’s history.

Chris grew up in Spring Lake. He attended Spring Lake public schools and graduated from Pine

Forest High School as a track and field All‐American in 1995. While at Pine Forest, he earned a full athletic scholarship to East Carolina University.

Chris’ capacity for leadership manifested itself through his works while matriculating at East

Carolina. As a determined student leader, he vigorously worked to transform his university into a more open and diverse epicenter for higher learning. As a result, the University often recognized his leadership and campus involvement.

In 2000, Chris exhibited the most selfless act of valor when he enlisted into the United States Army as a Computer Information Technology Analyst. After two short years, Chris was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Signal Corps through the United States Army Officer Candidate School.

Thereafter, he was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom followed by a deployment to Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. After being afforded the opportunity to strengthen his leadership skills with the entire world as his backdrop, Chris returned home to Fort Bragg to command the Third Special Forces (Airborne) Signal Detachment. His service and leadership in the United States Armed Forces earned him numerous military awards and accolades including the Bronze Star.

Chris was honorably discharged after seven and a half years of service to his country. He then began studies at William & Mary School of Law, the nation’s oldest legal institution. Upon graduating in

2010, Chris returned back home to Spring Lake and chose once again to serve, this time, in the community in which he grew up.

How did a sleepy town at a railroad depot turn into the mecca of tobacco named “The Bull City” and then reverse course 180 degrees and rise again as the “City of Medicine”? The historic tour of Durham is one of the most extraordinary stories you never heard.

In 1865, Union General Sherman and Confederate General Johnston negotiated the largest troop surrender of the Civil War at Bennett Place, 17 days after Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox. While 150,000 blue and grey troops were sitting around awaiting the details of surrender, they enjoyed the local “bright leaf” variety of tobacco. Post war those men wanted more, and the orders started rolling in, requests for that smooth tobacco to be sent home and the mega industry arose overnight.

Our itinerary consists of the following:

9:00 AM: Depart Doubletree hotel go directly to Stagville Plantation a 30,000 community where over 900 enslaved people lived & worked. Next downtown and conduct the downtown loop including drive by of the warehouse district, Pearl Cotton Mill, Old Durham Athletic Park, Royal Performing Arts/Carolina Theater, Black Wall Street, Main Street, DPAC, ATC & Bulls Baseball. Lunch stop at American Tobacco Historic District.

Next Duke Campus with the Chapel for the next hour. Return to American Tobacco Campus for brief walk through and historical relevance. Lunch

The money that tobacco brought into the local economy built many institutions that drive today’s economy, including Duke University. Originally Trinity College, the school made plans to move its campus to Raleigh until Washington Duke outbid them and together with Julian S. Carr,

enticed the college to relocate to Durham instead in 1892. We’ll take a quick tour of the striking neo-Gothic campus and then see the highlight, North Carolina’s second most visited tourist attraction, the amazing Duke Chapel.

Ironically, Duke University has become a major nationally recognized medical hub which brings the tale full circle from war to tobacco to the science and medical research based economy that drives present-day Durham.

Approximate Duration: 5 hours – 10:00AM to 3:00PM Departure from Doubletree Hotel and return.

Inclusions:

• Private transportation with professional guide throughout • Walking guided tours of Historic Stagville, American Tobacco Campus, Duke Chapel, Black Wallstreet • Chilled bottled water per guest included • Lots of diversity, culture, cuisine, arts and more…high value educational & quality experience.
