October 24, 2014

Dear Conference Attendees,

On behalf of the Houston Lawyers Association, I would like to welcome you

to the Tenth Annual National Black Pre-Law Conference and Law Fair.

The Houston Lawyers Association (HLA), an affiliate chapter of the National

Bar Association, was founded in 1955 to address the particular needs of Black

lawyers in the Houston area and the legal needs of the Black community in

general. Since that time, HLA has been on the forefront of the issues that affect

the Black community and continues to provide a forum which allows lawyers to

address those issues. Our membership includes lawyers, judges, congressional

representatives, educators and many more.

I remember being a prospective law student, with mixed feelings of both

excitement and anxiety. The National Black Pre-Law Conference is an excellent

opportunity, which can fuel your excitement about the profession, while providing

an abundance of helpful information to help calm any anxiety stemming from the

many questions that arise in preparing for law school.

I hope that you enjoy your time at the conference and I look forward to seeing

you soon.

Sincerely,

Danyahel Norris President, Houston Lawyers Association

Welcome!Dear Conference Participants:

It is my true and distinct honor and joy to welcome you to the 10th Annual National Black Pre-Law Admissions & Preparation Conference and Law School Recruitment Fair 2014. This

year, we celebrate a decade of inspiring and empowering aspiring Black lawyers!

We made it to year ten - a tremendous milestone that I am proud of. Although this has been a tough journey, I continue my excitement about this conference, the work that we are doing, and the impact that we are making. Thank you to all those who support our heartfelt mission of providing this greatly-needed service to future Black lawyers from across the country who need to come to a positive place where they can get solid “insider” information, resources and networking opportunities from people who truly want to see them succeed in pursuing the challenging path of becoming a lawyer.

You will have the chance to hear from some truly amazing law students, law professors, lawyers and judges who have not only succeeded in their own academic and professional careers, but who understand that true success is in the success of us all as a collective. All of these people who choose to be a part of this conference are truly my superheroes because they have taken on the additional social responsibility of being advocates for diversity in the legal profession, being mentors and role models – when they really don’t have to. Take advantage of the opportunity to learn from and interact with them! Opportunities like this don’t exist every day – believe me. Seize them!

Among this year’s incredible featured keynote speakers are: Pamela J. Meanes, Esq., President, National Bar Association and Partner, Thompson Coburn LLP, John Lewis, Jr., Esq., Chief, Global Diversity and Workplace Fairness, The Coca-Cola Company, Charles Hamilton Houston III, Esq., Assistant General Counsel, ABM Industries, Inc. and namesake and grandson of the late civil rights legal legend Charles Hamilton Houston, and Arun Alagappan, Esq., Founder and President, Advantage Testing Foundation.

In addition to our keynote speakers and exciting panel discussions, this event offers so much more. Make sure that you don’t pass up the chance to meet representatives from over 100 law schools at the Law School Recruitment Fair, experience the mock law class, participate in our signature Law School Admission & Preparation Advice Help Clinic and our Personal Statement, Diversity Statement, Resume and Addendum Practical Assistance Session, and take part in a diagnostic mock LSAT exam and test-taking strategies session.

Further, make plans to attend the 10 for 10 Awards Banquet where 10 extraordinary Black attorneys in recognition of every year of the conference’s existence. This year, you will be able to meet and hear from honorees Dr. Clarence B. Jones, Esq., Scholar-In-Residence,

Martin Luther King, Jr. Institute, Stanford University and Diversity Scholar and Visiting Professor, University of San Francisco, Christopher M. Chestnut, Esq., Chief Executive Officer and Principal, The Chestnut Firm, The Honorable Vicki Miles-LaGrange, Chief U.S. District Judge, Western District of Oklahoma, Dr. Walter L. Sutton, Esq., Associate General Counsel, Legal Administration and External Affairs, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Barbara R. Arnwine, Esq., President and Executive Director, Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Harry E. Johnson, Sr., Esq., President and CEO, Friends of the Memorial Foundation, Inc., Algernon “A.J.” Cooper, Esq., Founder, National Black Law Students Association and National Conference of Black Mayors, Irene O. Joe, Esq., Clinical Teaching Fellow, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law, Alvin O. Chambliss, Jr., Esq., Former Professor of Law and “The Last Original Civil Rights Lawyer”, and Sylvia James, Esq., Diversity Counsel, Baker Botts LLP.

The 10 for 10 Awards presentation will be followed by our Aspiring Lawyers Pinning Ceremony, during which all current lawyers stand in solidarity and show their confidence in the next generation of Black lawyers by pinning them. Our message is simple: we come from where you come from, we look like you and we have been told that we cannot do this, but although the road was extremely tough, we stand here today showing you living proof that it can be done and we welcome you into our professional ranks. Make sure that you participate and get pinned!

This conference was created for you and especially with you in mind. Our goal is to help increase the numbers of African Americans who are better prepared to take on the challenges of pursuing a professional legal education by filling in the informational gap that exists within our community. Although we often hear about the over saturation of lawyers, please understand this is not true when it comes to Black lawyers. We only make up 5% of all American lawyers and our communities continue to be underserved. Make no mistake, we are greatly needed.

This conference is not just an event; it really is a movement and just one effort to reach out to aspiring Black lawyers to give you what you need to succeed. However, we also let you know that we have the expectation that you the same once you achieve your goals. Just as we sow into you, you must sow into others. Just how you need us now, those coming behind you will need you – and our community as a whole needs you – especially once you are armed with legal training. Make the commitment today to give back and pay it forward

Now, take advantage of this wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime experience that we have planned for you. Enjoy the conference weekend!

Continued blessings and success,

October 17, 2014 “Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.” ― Mahatma Gandhi Greetings from the African American Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas and welcome to the 2014 National Black Pre-Law Conference & Law Fair! Welcome to the beginning of your journey to becoming what you believe yourself to be. Whether you want to someday represent the government or take the elevator to your top floor office at BigLaw or hang your own shingle – it all begins with this wise investment in yourself. Seize this opportunity and all that it has to offer! Welcome to pushing past the familiar tinges of fear and doubt that plagued us all when we were in your shoes. Here, you will meet others who share your fear. Pour into one another. Uplift one another. The legal profession is about relationship building and putting others’ needs before your own. Begin practicing that now. And most importantly, welcome to acquiring the capacity to be the brilliant legal mind you are destined to be. This conference presents you a tremendous opportunity to gain valuable insight into the law school experience, prepare for the rigors of legal education, network with successful lawyers and judges, and forge lasting alliances with those who, like you, will soon be attorneys, judges, and community leaders. What will you do to maximize this opportunity? Will you leverage it to reach your full potential?

On behalf of the National Bar Association (NBA), I extend a warm greeting to the par-ticipants and attendees of the 10th Annual National Black Pre-Law Admissions & Prepa-ration Conference and Law School Recruitment Fair. As president of the oldest and largest association for African American lawyers and judges, I applaud this endeavor and its mission to expand the pipeline and diversify op-portunities for aspiring African American lawyers. I commend you on this very worth-while event and wish you much success. As one of the nation’s premier information-sharing and networking conferences focused on ensuring the success of aspiring African American attorneys, this annual event has created a platform for aspiring attorneys to become engaged within the legal profession, while valuing the importance of the profession. With your help, we will continue to build the pool of leaders, future Supreme Court justices, and members of the NBA who will help us maintain our rightful place in society as the conscience of the nation and the gatekeepers of justice. Since its founding in 1925, the NBA has strived to expand the pipelines of opportunity for aspiring African American attorneys through various programs and initiatives. We continue to work with the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) and our Young Lawyers Division (YLD) to create networking events, mentoring and fellowship programs as well as providing grant opportunities. Additionally, our annual Crump Law Camp and Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition provides pre-law and scholarship opportunities to high school students. Thank you for your dedication to advancing the legal profession and for keeping us mindful that in order to ensure that justice and equality is obtained by all, we must al-ways invest in the pipeline! Sincerely,

Pamela J. Meanes President of the National Bar Association PJM/ljw

October 24, 2014 Dear Friends, It is with great pleasure that I extend my support to the National Black Pre-Law Conference and Law Fair on its 10th annual conference. Law school graduates go on to make and interpret law and public policy, and they become leaders in many other fields as well. Yet, despite making up 13% of the U.S. population, African Americans make up only 5% of American lawyers, and are similarly underrepresented in other fields of law. The National Black Pre-Law Conference and Law Fair provides a forum for aspiring African Americans to network with their peers and receive advice from community leaders, lawyers, judges and representatives from top law schools. It also offers workshops, panels and even mock law school classes to help aspiring students understand law school admissions, and what to expect if accepted to law school.

Ensuring that African Americans are adequately represented in the field of law strengthens the entire nation. Best wishes on a memorable event.

Sincerely,

Karen Bass Member of Congress, 37th District of California U.S. House of Representatives

Dear Attendees: It is an honor to welcome you to the 10th Annual National Black Pre-Law Conference and Law Fair. For ten years, this conference has served the nation’s community by providing premier information-sharing and networking empowerment for aspiring black lawyers. The National Black Pre-Law Conference and Law Fair was developed to address the underrepresentation of blacks entering into, and graduating from law school. This conference equips future African American lawyers with the skills necessary to gain admission into, and succeed in law school. I hope you are able to take full advantage of the tremendous resources the National Black Pre-Law Conference has made available to you here at this event. The African American community has historically been underserved by a lack of access to our justice system. When we do engage with the criminal and civil system, we may encounter inequalities that persist in our justice system. As future attorneys of color, it is my hope that you feel a moral imperative to address these inequities whenever possible. I wish the 10th Annual National Black Pre-Law Conference and Law Fair the utmost success in their mission to increase the number of highly competitive black law school applicants. Best wishes for a wonderful conference, and best wishes to you all on your future endeavors. Sincerely, Steven Horsford Member of Congress

The Story Behind the ConferenceWhy was the National Black Pre-Law Conference created?

When Evangeline was a college student, she knew that she wanted to go to law school. Although she was clear about her goal, she didn’t receive any true pre-law advisement, had very little information on the realities of what law school would be like, had few chances to meet any real-life lawyers, and did not have any mentors to assist her. She was left to navigate the daunting law school admissions process alone.

As she looks back on those years, she recalls having a great desire to attend law

school and assumed that she was doing everything right (working hard in all of her classes and mak-ing straight As), but at the same time, feeling lost. She recognizes that although she was on the right track, because she didn’t have the correct knowledge or mentorship, she wasn’t doing all that she could have to make herself a truly well-prepared, and more competi-tive, standout applicant.

She is adamant that ability and drive were not the issue, but simply not knowing any better. She is passionate about the fact that she could have greatly benefitted from real assistance. She knew there was information she was missing, but didn’t know where to find it, and the few lawyers she encountered stated that law school was tough, but were unwilling to provide the necessary mentorship to help fill in the missing pieces.

“Although I was a serious straight A student, always studying and focused on the future, no one really ex-plained to me that I had to have a strategy and a writ-ten success action plan to effectively compete and that I would be competing on a national level with lots of other straight A students with the same goals I had. I could have been in a better position to be a much more sophisticated and ultra-competitive candidate had I had good information, mentoring, and the opportunity to network with law students and lawyers who cared about my success. You can be bright and a hard worker, but without the right information and mentors, you are at a tremendous disadvantage,” she adds.

As a college undergrad, she made a promise to herself that once she graduated from law school and became a lawyer, she would never forget what it felt like to be the first in her fam-ily to pursue a law degree. She vowed to remain committed to doing everything in her power

to help others in her situation. Through creating the conference, she kept that promise.

There was nothing like the National Black Pre-Law Conference when Evangeline was in college or law school - nothing that addressed the issues that she and other African Americans faced. She knew it was time for a change. She had tried other avenues on her own to address the issue - writing and publishing books, establishing a national Black pre-law organization, cre-ating an informational website, and an e-mentorship program - which were all helpful in their own way. But nothing could replace the dynamics of an event and in-person connections - networking and opportunities for mentorship - with so many different law students, administrators, professors, and lawyers on a national level.

Now, hundreds of future Black lawyers, law school rep-resentatives, law students, and lawyers from all over the country converge in Houston to participate in the country’s largest and most comprehensive pre-law conference – The National Black Pre-Law Admissions & Preparation Conference and Law Fair – now entering its ninth successful year. And Evangeline plans to not only continue, but to make it bigger and better and ul-timately - through greater outreach and technology - reach as many people as possible..

“I knew there was so much I didn’t know. And there really was a great deal of information that I didn’t re-alize I didn’t know. What made mat-ters worse is that we didn’t have the Internet back then, and the library on my college campus had extreme-ly limited resources, especially relat-ed to law school,” she reminisces.

The IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law was an invaluable experience and encouraged me to open up my mind to different areas of the law. I interned with the government, a law firm, in-house counsel, and in a non-traditional setting. That exposure allowed me to get hands-on experience in various areas before deciding on a final career path.

FOCUS: FINANCING A LEGAL EDUCATION (FINANCIAL AID AND STUDENT LOAN DEBT)

*** SPECIAL TOWN HALL MEETING***

AFRICAN AMERICANS AND THE COST AND VALUE OF A LAW SCHOOL EDUCATION: THE TRUTH ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID, MANAGING STUDENT LOAN DEBT, UNDERSTANDING LOAN FORGIVENESS OPTIONS, THE CURRENT LEGAL JOB MARKET, AND THE OVERALL RETURN ON THE

INVESTMENT

Date/Time: Friday, October 24, 2014, 10:50 A.M. – 11:50 A.M.

DESCRIPTION: The featured panelists in this session will discuss how aspiring lawyers without personal or family wealth will be able to finance an expensive professional legal education. Information will be provided about funding resources available including federal and private loans, merit-based and need-based scholarships, fellowships, grants, and how incoming law students can qualify for them. They share information on Loan Repayment Assistance Programs (LRAPs) that are offered by law schools, state bar foundations, public interest employers, and federal and state governments for law graduates seeking lower-paying public interest careers. They will also talk about the average debt load of law school graduates, and discuss the importance of minimizing debt by living within one’s means while a law student, debt management after law school graduation, and how one’s student debt load can impact their everyday lives and career decisions. Additionally, they will explain the marketability of the law degree, the current legal job market, and the realities of law schools graduating more students than there are new jobs, and what law graduates are doing for employment and to earn a living if they don’t find their dream legal job right out of law school. They will address the general oversaturation of lawyers versus the underrepresentation of Black lawyers. Further, panelists will address frankly “the law school value proposition” and whether they believe law school truly provides a return on the investment for graduates in the current economy.

FOCUS: PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS IMAGE (SOFT SKILLS)

The Game Changers: Mandatory Soft Skills That Make the Difference for Professional Success (Key Pointers on Professional Dress, Professional Hairstyles, Make-Up, as well as Etiquette, Personal Branding, Social Media, Networking, and Relationship Building Skills)

Date/Time: Friday, October 24, 2014, 5:10 P.M. – 6:15 P.M.

DESCRIPTION: Being both smart and ambitious is important, but it’s simply not enough to guarantee success. During this lively discussion, panelists will discuss the realities of the mandatory soft skills that make a difference in whether or not someone is successful in the legal profession, the professional world in general and in life.
