OFFICE OF TECHNOLOGY LICENSING 2 0 1 5CALENDAR

What does an innovator look like?

Too seldom does innovation have a female face: Women

represent only 24 percent of the STEM workforce. Only 1.3 percent of

venture-backed startups have a female founder. Women account for just 11 percent of board members on technology companies.

The University of Florida researchers fea-tured in this year’s calendar are changing the face of innovation. In disciplines ranging from agriculture to engineering to medicine, these female faculty members have disclosed inventions to the UF Office of Technology Licensing: medical devices, therapeutics and chemical detectors that change lives and make the world a better place.

Women and their ideas are rising at UF and throughout the world of science – like the balloons in their calendar portraits.

“We already have hugely talented women inventors among our faculty and students, as well as female CEOs at a handful of our most exciting startups,” UF President Bernie Machen told the audience at the 2014

Celebration of Innovation startup showcase. “What we must do is bring more women to their ranks.”

A groundbreaking UF program, Empower-ing Women in Technology Startups (eWiTS®), is helping to do just that. The program, pilot-ed by UF’s Office of Technology Licensing, the Florida Innovation Hub and UF Tech Con-nect®, trains professional women in entre-preneurship, with a goal of increasing female participation in the leadership of technology companies.

“In an era of such intense global competi-tion, our nation must tap the creativity and energy of all citizens,” Dr. Machen said. “The same is true of our university: We will only succeed in our efforts to rise among the na-tion’s top public universities if we are backed by the full participation of people of all gen-ders and races.”

The dismal statistics of women in STEM will change when we all pull together to make them change. Not only are the women featured in this calendar changing the world through their technology innovations; they’re also showing young girls of today that they can become the innovators of tomorrow.

Sharing enabling information – how your discovery works – without a Confidential Disclosure Agreement (CDA) in place can jeopardize patent protection. If you need to discuss enabling details of your invention with people outside the university, OTL staff can often complete CDAs on the same day they’re requested.

Don’t underestimate the value of your work! While very few research discoveries generate millions of dollars, many play a key role in improving the human condition and making the world a better place. Unless researchers disclose, their work is rarely commercialized. You can submit an invention disclosure on the OTL website, www.otl.ufl.edu.
