Shore Power Cord InspectionInspection and proper installation of your shore power cord could reduce the potential hazard of fire on the docks. There a number of different things to look for when inspecting your cords, (chafing,

exposed wires, loose connections, muskrat damage, etc.) Be sure to inspect what you can’t see under the dock as well. Making sure the power is off is key when connecting and disconnecting your vessel to shore power. The cord must be firmly connected and locked with a slight twist to the right and/or with a threaded collar that attaches the cord to your vessel. Make sure when your vessel moves side to side and backwards and forwards that the cord does not become taught nor allowed to become slack and droop in the water. When cords remain in the water current can be released, causing corrosion to your out drives as well as zincs. Cords in the water can also cause potential hazards and possible death from drowning due to stray current being emitted into the water. The muscles of a swimmer become paralyzed from the stray current therefore disabling your ability to stay afloat. Help us with this potential hazard by being observant and aware of not only your own cord but also your dock mates and do not swim in the marina!

PENINSULA CUP REGATTA, September 17th, 18th, and 19th.

For the sailors on Lake Norman who want to race a sailboat, there are numerous weekend regattas and monthly series to choose from. One could race almost every week of the year if so inclined. Be-tween Outrigger Yacht Club, Lake Norman Yacht Club, and the Lake Norman Keelboat Council, you could begin the year with the

Ice Bucket Regatta on New Year’s Day, then follow up with the Icicle Series from late Janu-ary through March, and onto the Mid-Winters, the Spring Series, the Wednesday Night series, etc. The racing doesn’t stop until late November. However, of all the regattas each year, one stands above all others in levels of participa-tion, prestige, and FUN; the Peninsula Cup Regatta. Everyone marks their calendars for the third week in September, and this year will be the 18th running of what has become a “must race” event for the serious sailor as well as the not-so-serious. In addition to the usual Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker divisions, the “Pen Cup” also includes a Cruising Division for those sailors who want to compete, but have a boat built and equipped more for comfort than speed, and who wants a more relaxed racing experience. For PYC, the weekend is more that just a yacht race, the Pirates of the Peninsula party is the highlight of the Fall season, and there are many ways to participate. For the younger pirates, there is the Treasure Hunt and related events, and for everyone, there is the always popular costume contest Saturday night after the banquet. As your Sail Fleet Captain for 2010, I look forward to answering any questions you may have about joining in the fun. If you are a sailor interested in getting into racing, the Cruising Division is for you. Check out our First Friday series to get some experience. If you are a member in our powerboat fleet, we are seeking volunteers to assist in race organization, and a large powerboat to serve as the Race Committee vessel. You may also want to invite some friends aboard and be part of the spectator fleet, as there are great opportunities for some exciting photos at the Starting Line, and at the various Marks. If you are part of a business or organization that would benefit from having a significant presence at the club that weekend, we are looking for a Title Sponsor for the regatta itself. We also have other levels of sponsorship opportunities related to the various weekend events, and I would welcome any inquiries.

See you there, Clement Caddell, Sail Fleet Captain

MEMBERSHIP NEWS

ATTENTION!! - Club Membership Update FormsPlease be on the lookout for our Club Membership Update Form that will be sent with your next Club statement in July. Many of you have had big changes in your lives since you joined

It is important that we keep our records up to date so that we can plan our Club events to fit the needs of our members, and so that we can notify you of these events or any other important news regarding your PYC membership. Please take a few minutes to complete this form and return it with your club statement, or drop it by the membership office on your next visit to the Club. We certainly appreciate your help as we update our membership records!

PYC JuLYMEMBER PROFILE

Meet Bill & Wendy Dorn, new mem-bers since March of this year! Bill & Wendy moved to Mooresville from Florida 6 years ago, after being “corporate nomads” for 30+ years and living in 10 states. Bill is the Area Business Director for a pharmaceuti-cal company and Wendy takes care of the home front. Their kids and 6 grandchildren are back in Florida, and they hope that since they now have their first boat the family will be visiting more often. They’ve wanted this boat for years, but were never near a great boating area like Lake Norman.

The Dorn’s have two miniature schnauzers, Misty and Sadie, who are their “additional crew” when they are taking the boat out for a cruise. You may see them from time to time walking the docks!

Bill & Wendy enjoy collecting and drinking good wine and are looking forward to be-ing members of the Wine Society. They also enjoy shooting out in Rowan County and traveling, especially on their annual trips to Hawaii. They have found everyone at The PYC to be so nice and helpful, since they are “new boaters”. Stop by M Dock and say hi!!
