A short history of The Rotary Foundation

In 1917, RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed that an endowment be set up “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, when the endowment fund had grown to more than US$5,000, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International. Five Trustees, including Klumph, were appointed to “hold, invest, manage, and administer all of its property . . . as a single trust, for the furtherance of the purposes of RI.” Two years later, the Foundation made its first grant of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. “Daddy” Allen, later grew into the Easter Seals.

The Great Depression and World War II both impeded the Foundation’s growth, but the need for lasting world peace generated great postwar interest in its development. After Rotary’s founder, Paul P. Harris, died in 1947, contributions began pouring into Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation.

That year, the first Foundation program – the forerunner of Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships – was established. In 1965-66, three new programs were launched: Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants.

The Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants program was launched in 1978, and Rotary Volunteers was created as a part of that program in 1980. PolioPlus was announced in 1984-85, and the next year brought Rotary Grants for University Teachers. The first peace forums were held in 1987-88, leading to the Foundation's peace and conflict studies programs.

Throughout this time, support of the Foundation grew tremendously. Since the first donation of $26.50 in 1917, it has received contributions totaling more than $1 billion. More than $70 million was donated in 2003-04 alone. To date, more than one million individuals have been recognized as Paul Harris Fellows – people who have given US$1,000 to the Annual Programs Fund or have had that amount contributed in their name.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE This week we had the final presentation by students from Somerset before they set off to Borneo for a great adventure. It was wonderful to see the interaction between members and the students especially as they sat with Graham Cooper who was one of the founders of Somerset. It is important for us to find ways to still be involved with school students as of course for many of us that is a distant memory. The container for Africa is filling up and we soon need to find ways of raising money to send it over there but there are lots of little spaces we can fill with clothes or toys so please be on the lookout for stuff to send. I’m pleased to announce that we have taken over the Children In Indonesia project that Cyril Richarde started and the reason why we have the billy. RAWCs require that projects be administered through a Club and not district so we have taken it back as it were. Bill Bonner will still manage the project but Lambert will also be more involved. PLEASE remember that Vince is overseas so he needs timely, accurate and legible information in order to produce the Rotator. This coming Tuesday Chris Hidle will tell us what he has been doing in Australia as he is soon to depart back to mother England. See you next week Andrew

Our guest speakers were three students from Sommerset College who were accompanied by their teacher David Shapland. The students, all volunteers who are paying their own way, are soon to embark on a three week World Challenge trip to Borneo. There, they will spend one third of their time helping with a community project, which in this case is erecting a fence to protect endangered species of deer. Borneo locals hope to breed the deer as a potential tourist attraction. There will be eight students and two leaders in their party and the students have the responsibility of arranging accommodation, transport and food whilst there. Our club will be assisting in providing funds for this project. Heads ‘n Tails: Hugh Smith Raffle: Merv Powell Meeting Closure The meeting was closed by President Andrew at 7.45pm.

As stated below by PDG Jones, our club has agreed to sponsor the project now called “Sponsoring Education for Children in Indonesia”. It is used to be commonly known as Sponsoring Indonesian Orphans. There are 3 members on the board and we need one more from our club. If anyone is interested, please contact Lambert Wang.

Letter from Elliot Dolan-Evans our recipient of the Peter & Jenny Hobart Bursary.

Dear Greg, It is Elliot Dolan-Evans here, a second year medical student and recipient of the 2012 Peter and Jenny Hobart Bursary. I hope you are going well and business is good at the rotary club! I just wanted to update yourself, Peter and Jenny, as well as the rest of the rotary club as to some recent developments of mine. A couple of weeks ago, the organisation that I founded, the Surgical Interest Association (Surgia) won the Griffith Innovation Challenge – a competition for innovative business ideas, where the winners represent the most innovative, well-managed and stable business idea. Winning this competition was worth $38,000 in cash and prizes to Surgia. I mentioned the organisation in my acceptance speech of the Bursary, but just to recap, Surgia is a not-for-profit, student-run association that will address future surgical workforce deficits, battle inequalities and discrimination in surgery, assist the aims of Griffith University in becoming a top research and academic institution, develop our members surgical skills, and tackle issues in rural and global surgical practice. The association will also be a strong supporter of surgically-orientated charities in the near future, who take surgical teams to developing countries to perform much-needed operations that aren't otherwise available. It is the vision of Surgia to not only fund our own members to go on these trips, but to also financially support such charities. I wanted to let the rotary club know of this achievement as I would not have been able to commit the time that was needed to this organisation had I not been successful in achieving the Peter and Jenny Hobart Bursary. The Bursary took a lot of financial pressure off this year, and allowed me to achieve a great deal in my extra-curricular activities that I wouldn't have been able to otherwise. Again, I sincerely thank Jenny and Peter, the rotary club and yourself for this wonderful opportunity. I look forward to catching up soon, and I hope to see the other Rotarians soon. Kind Regards, Elliot
