Larynx cancer occurs when malignant cancer cells are formed in the tissues of the larynx.
The larynx is a part of the throat, between the base of the tongue and the trachea. The larynx contains the vocal cords, which vibrate and make sound when air is directed against them. The sound echoes through the pharynx, mouth and nose to make a person’s voice.
• A change or hoarseness in the voice• A sore throat or cough that does not go away• Trouble or pain when swallowing• A lump in the neck or throat
*A doctor should be consulted should the above symptoms occur.
• WHAT IS LARYNX CANCER?
• Use of tobacco products• Alcohol• Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection
* People who think they may be at risk should discuss this with their doctor.

The treatment will largely depend on the size of the cancer. The main treatments are:
SurgerySurgery is commonly used to treat patients with laryngeal cancers. Depending on the stage and location of the cancer, different operations may be used to remove the cancer and some nearby parts of the larynx.
After the cancer is removed, reconstructive surgery may be done to help restore the appearance and function of the affected areas.

Radiation Therapy with/without ChemotherapyFor early-stage larynx cancers, radiation therapy may be the only treatment necessary. For more advanced throat cancers, radiation therapy may be combined with chemotherapy or surgery. In very advanced throat cancers, radiation therapy may be used to reduce signs and symptoms and make you more comfortable.
