How the Sphinx lost its nose Every year, thousands of tourists visit the great pyramids in Giza outside Cairo in Egypt. Next to the pyramids sits the big

Sphinx watching everything. One of the greatest mysteries of ancient Egypt is what happened to the Sphinx’s nose. Look

at the end of the nose – it’s broken.

Well, I can now tell you what happened. I bought a piece of old papyrus in an antique shop. It tells the whole story in

hieroglyphics. Luckily, I can translate. So here it is.

Many, many years ago there was a very greedy pharaoh who ruled over ancient Egypt. Let’s call him Mamaduke.

Mamaduke wanted everything and he wanted everything bigger. “Build me the biggest temple in the land,” he told his

slaves. He wasn’t happy. “Build me the biggest pyramid,” he ordered the slaves. He still wasn’t happy.

Then he had the idea of building the Sphinx. He wanted it so tall that from the top, he could see all his land. The slaves

worked hard, day and night.

One day, when it was nearly ready Mamaduke visited the building. He wanted to go to the top and check the view. “It isn’t

ready,” they said but he didn’t care. He climbed up to the Sphinx’s neck. Then, he wanted to climb higher. He climbed

onto the mouth and then onto the nose. Now, Mamaduke was a big man. He liked food. As he pulled his body onto the

nose, the rocks started to fall. Suddenly, the nose and Mamaduke fell to the ground. And that was the end of the pharaoh.

The slaves weren’t very sad and they never built the Sphinx another nose. There was no one to order them to do it and they were also very tired.

Back in time “Where is your homework?” John looked up and saw Mr Bowen. Mr Bowen was not happy.

“Umm… I... Umm... I...” John wasn’t sure what to say.

“No homework! Again!” Mr Bowen was angry. Really angry.

No homework for the third time in a month. This was very bad. Detention after school every day for a week and a letter to

his parents.

That stupid homework. A story about space. He had an idea. An astronaut and his dog are in a spaceship. They get lost

in space and they meet some weird aliens. Twenty years later, they get back home but Earth is a very different place. It

wasn’t a bad idea. He had the story, but he didn’t have time to write it. The problem was his time machine. For two years now John spent all his time working on that time machine. It was nearly

ready. He didn’t have time to do homework.

Four hours later John arrived home. He had a letter in his hand. It was for his mum and dad. He knew what it said. He

was in big trouble. What could he do?

And then he had an idea. The time machine! It was nearly ready. He only needed to go back one day – just enough time

to write that stupid story. What could go wrong? It was time to test his time machine. He walked upstairs to his bedroom.

He walked up to the wardrobe and opened the door. He pressed the hidden button and the secret door to his laboratory opened. John walked inside ...

A trip to the restaurant Last Saturday, it was my mum’s birthday and so my dad took us all to an expensive restaurant. Of course, we all wore our best clothes. My younger brother and I wore a nice shirt, a tie and a jacket. It was really horrible and I felt silly.

“Don’t complain, Kevin,” my dad said. “It’s your mother’s special day.”

The restaurant was very expensive. We were the only children there. The waiter took us to a table by the window and

gave us all a menu. I didn’t really understand a lot of it because all the dishes had French names.

When the food arrived I was quite happy. I had potatoes and beef. It looked really nice. But on my brother’s face there

was a look of horror. There were peppers and onions and mushrooms – all things my brother hates. I thought it was

funny. “How’s he going to eat this?” I thought.

Half an hour later I looked at his plate*. I was surprised. It was empty. Well done, William,” Mum said. He had a big smile on his face.

“How did he eat that?” I thought. “Very strange.”

A few days later the mystery was solved. Mum wanted to wash his jacket. She noticed there was something in the pocket.

She put her hand in the pocket and pulled out the peppers, onions and mushrooms! It was disgusting.
