NEWS
Some great results this week for ODs!
All our Saturday League sides won their games, while the T20 side
enjoyed a great victory over Langley Park Boys School on Friday
night.
The 1st XI won a thriller against Minster, the 2nd XI rolled High
Halstow while the 4th XI overpowered Catford & Cyphers.
It would not be right to start this newsletter without thanking
those who have made big contributions to the club this week.
Firstly, thanks to Jamie Batten for organising the Friday night
spectacle. We really enjoyed the event and hope it can be
repeated again with the same success next year. Additionally,
thanks to Rebecca, Nikki and the other ladies on the BBQ during
the game. Keeping everyone well fed was a challenge but one
that was done magnificently well.
Our next thank you is to another parent. Ian Murrell stepped in
to field for the 4th XI on Saturday after Anand’s unfortunate
injury. Having 11 fielders makes such a difference and I know
Captain Steve certainly appreciated it. Get well soon Anand.
Additional thanks to Howard for
umpiring the 1st XI match at short
notice.
Also, congratulations from the
OD’s community go to George
Cook on his marriage at the weekend. Shame that the wedding had to
mean George missed Saturdays games, leaving the 19% of managers who
selected him in their fantasy teams disappointed…
This week’s newsletter is jam packed with information. It seems a new
found love for writing match reports has emerged, with 5 excellent
submissions included this week. Many thanks to Jamie, Laurence, Steve,
Lakey and Mike took the time to write them!

MATCH REPORTS:
1st XI
The 1st XI hosted Minster in an eagerly anticipated fixture between
last year’s two promoted sides. With Minster winning the league
and strengthening through their winter signing of former Kent all-
rounder Fabian Cowdrey, it was important that ODs were at their
best.
Under clear skies, captain Worsley delivered by winning the toss
and had no hesitation in choosing to bat first. However, the
positive start was to end there as Kent League wicket taking
sensation Martin Hammond scythed through the ODs top order
with delicate control of the moving ball.
White and Batten were both familiar with their opening bowler’s
gifts, but both succumbed in similar fashion as the edged to slip.
Hammond’s cult status is evidently yet to reach the beaches of
Barbados, although it can’t be long, as Boyce immediately looked
to go after the bowling. Fresh from savaging Langley’s attack,
Boyce tried to impress his will upon the Minsterman, but it was
Hammond who was celebrating after Dario attempt to pepper the
Chinese Roundabout. Hammond was on a roll, with the Boyce
dismissal acting as the filling in a Batten and White bread sandwich. 17/3.
At this stage, ODs were teetering on the precipice and did well to solidify their innings through the
diligence of Chris Webster and Nick Worsley. The pair constructed an excellent partnership where they
neutralised the skills of the Minster bowlers and built for future acceleration.
Webster was particularly impressive, showing superb skill as he adapted his usual array of expansive shots
to the match scenario. His innings was characterised by checked drives and a solid defence with the
occasional magical whip for the crowd to marvel at. Meanwhile, Worsley’s resilient innings was all the
more impressive considering the emotional turmoil experienced from De Villiers retiring in the week.
The pair worked tirelessly to put ODs in a position of strength and started to accelerate. Worsley lofted
Cowdrey over mid-on and Webster flicked over mid-wicket as the partnership edged towards three
figures. However, with acceleration comes risk and Duggan removed Worsley, Webster and East to reclaim
the advantage. Some lusty blows from Nott and extra cover expertise from Cameron Sanders helped ODs
up to 159 all out.
ODs emerged from the changing rooms knowing the importance of prize wicket, Fabian Cowdrey, and the
need to stifle Minster’s attacking intent. The task ahead was quickly reinforced as Cowdrey pumped Batten
on the up through the offside from consecutive balls.
Fortunately, Webster has developed a wonderful knack of threatening the outside edge and induced a
feather behind from Cowdrey’s fellow opener to find the spark to ignite the ODs bowling unit. Further

edges came and went through the Karius slip cordon as Batten and Webster caused problems for Ashwell,
but Cowdrey stood strong. Ashwell fell LBW to Webster and Batten flattened the timbers of his
replacement.
Fabian Cowdrey was now joined by his TV celebrity brother much to Jane East’s excitement. However well-
travelled you are thought, nothing can prepare you for the introduction of Ed Nott. A gyrating Catherine-
Wheel of a bowler, Nott was thrown into the attack with the view of making something happen. Fabian
survived, but Julius fell as Baylis tumbled to take a difficult diving chance.
Ainger mixed up his flight well, holding the batsmen at arms-length and limiting their opportunities to
attack. He was well supported by Worsley from the pavilion end, whose nagging line and length was made
all the more difficult to get away thanks for Eashan Patel’s work up to the stumps. Ainger induced a loose
drive to Webster, who took a bread and butter catch and ODs had a chance.
In previous years, the 1st XI have struggled to build pressure as partnerships develop and it was extremely
pleasing to see the discipline from the whole team as they ensured the game did not drift. Minster built
and worked hard towards their target but struggled for boundaries as ODs fought to restrict them. They
were rewarded for their efforts, as Worsley broke the partnership.
Now the game hung in the balance and it became increasingly important to manage the wicket of Cowdrey
who had passed fifty. It was the captain who removed him, encouraging an uppish on drive that Cameron
Sanders snaffled mid dive to earn the Vivo Perfect Catch of the Match.
A wise man once said that runs on the board are the most important currency of the realm, and never have
his words been more true. As Minster edged closer, ODs held their nerve, with wickets from Batten and
Sanders leaving Minster’s 10th wicket requiring 17 runs for victory. Webster ran in hard and a mistimed
pull ballooned to Boyce at mid-wicket to wrap up a very impressive victory.
Jamie Batten bowled a quick ball to the Minster no. 4 that hit the stumps and the bails fell off
4
This proved to be an excellent team win against tough opposition.
Minster’s bowling and fielding performance was superb and made
the ODs victory all the more satisfying.
Many thanks to Howard and Sheila for umpiring and scoring.
MOM: Chris Webster - wonderfully mature knock to get ODs back in
the game plus wickets with the ball
VPCOM: Cameron Sanders - diving penalty style grab to remove the
main man
DOD: Ed Nott - threw his bat from the 30-yard circle after getting run
out (running himself out). Some say his bat is still flying.
ODs 1st XI will return next week at Old Elthamians.

2nd XI
ODs 94-2 (13.1) defeated High Halstow 90 (30.1) by 8 wickets
The 2nd team made the trip to High Halstow in a bid to sustain their unbeaten start to the season. In
keeping with long-established ODs 2nd XI tradition, the skipper elected to bowl first under sunny skies. The
oppo made it to 27-0 before Dan Hunter induced a loose drive. 2 overs later, Hunter removed the other
opener courtesy of a stunning reaction grab by Richard Loader in the gully. Ollie Day joined in the fun,
inducing an edge behind before a top edge was extremely well taken
by Rohan Patel and Hunter scored a direct hit from point. At 60-5, High
Halstow were wobbling and Tej Patel pushed them over the precipice
with a spell of 7-4-10-4. The skipper returned to close the innings for
90.
Hoping to get back in time for the playoffs (“the best show on earth”)
the skip promoted the in-form Mike Parr to open alongside Richard
Loader. ODs had 9 after the first ball and this set the tone for some
excellent stroke play from both. Loader was dismissed for 27 and Parr
for 45 before Hamilton (8*) struck a couple of emphatic boundaries as
ODs cantered home by 8 wickets by 4 o’clock.

4th XI
The 4s went to Catford and Cyphers’ Jubilee Ground (with a lovely facility built by Dunstonian’s school),
last Saturday. The pitch has a nice slope to help the bowlers from one end but, as it’s orientated exactly
East-West (90 degrees off ’true’), the bowlers from the opposite end are helped during the second innings
by the sun being directly in the eyes of the batsmen. Strangely, having won the toss on a very hot day, the
C&C captain elected to subject his fielders to the heat of the afternoon and his batsmen to having to pick
the ball out of the sun later in the day!
Kev Harding and Andy Rouse got us off to the perfect steady start but we’d unfortunately lost them both,
having put on 62 runs, by the 15th over, just as the run rate was accelerating. Anand joined Rousey for a
few overs and demonstrated his easy ability with the bat before he was forced to retire with a back
injury. This brought together Dan Murrell and Will East with Dan managing the game with a maturity
beyond his years and Will (top scoring, 43), as ever, never missing the opportunity to play a shot. Together
this partnership put on another 72 runs, taking us to a healthy 141 with 8 of our 40 overs still to bat. At
this point the run rate unsurprisingly slowed as we tried to regroup but, unfortunately we lost 3 more
wickets, though Will Black cruised to a very quick 18, including 3 fours (with one just a few inches short of
getting him on the 2018 sixes board). Robin East and Steve Sawko saw out the 40 overs, with us finishing
on a creditable 183 for 7 and with Sawko providing the first comedy moment of the day, determined to
take a single off the last ball, which he’d hit directly to a fielder, and diving in to the danger end from a
good couple of meters out, only for the ball to bounce lamely over his back a good second to two later.
A pleasant tea (excellent cake), allowed us a little respite from the beating sun before we returned to
challenge the opposition with the ball. At this point the opposition captain agreed that Ian Murrell could
take the field to stand in for Anand, who had left to seek advice on his back. We decided to bowl Hall and
Sawko down the hill with Robin East and Isaac Loader bowling out of the sun, ably supported by Dan
Murrell, jumping at the opportunity to replace Anand in the bowling line up. We were concerned about
the C&C wicket keeper, who had smashed us around the Warren for fun in the pre-season friendly, coming
in at number 3 but it transpired that we should have been worried about their opener who resisted
wicketless spells from Hall, Sawko and Robin East before being picked off by Murrell, caught Liam
Osborne at point for 47. Dan looked dangerous throughout his spell and finished with 2 for 14 off 5
overs. Hall returned to complete a spell of 10 overs, 2 maidens, 1 for 30, taking his well-deserved wicket
off the very last ball of his 10th over and providing the second comedy moment of the day when appealing,
somewhat over enthusiastically, for an LBW decision, none the wiser that the ball had gone from pad to
bat and then splayed the stumps. Strangely, Sawko finished with identical figures. Following Dan from the
bottom end Isaac Loader came on to present the batsmen (and Rousey, behind), with massively turning
leg-spin coming out of the sun, now low in the sky and being rewarded with another catch to Liam
Osborne at point. In the end, we had real competition for the overs from the bottom end with Robin East
and Dan Murrell both keen to return to the attack but Will East offered to do 2 overs and ended up not
being able to stop himself bowling until the end and finishing with 2 for 10 off 4 overs (1 maiden).
I could name each player at this point but suffice to say that our fielding was truly excellent all around the
field from every member of the team, with special thanks going to Ian Murrell for his unanticipated
valuable contribution. The enthusiasm in the field was ably demonstrated at one point by all four fielders,
from Gully to Short Extra, all determined to prevent runs, converging on the same ball (but avoided the
potential for another comedy moment).
6
By the end of the game all 12 players had made a contribution to the 4s first win of the season and 18
points in the bag, by constraining C&C to 137 for 7. And we hope that the first news from Anand that he
may have just pulled a muscle is true, meaning we could see him returning to the field sooner, rather than
later.
I considered awarding Man of the Match to the whole side for the fielding performance but this was
probably eclipsed by two colts. Dan Murrell’s excellent all round contribution of his game management,
29 runs and two wickets was highly commendable but just pipped for the award this week by Will East’s
top-scoring 43 runs and 2 wickets. Congratulations Will and congrats to the clots who have beaten the rest
of us to Man of the Match for all 3 league games so far this season.

5th XI
The 5’s received their first outing of the year thanks to no home game for the 3’s. They went into the game
with a great side on paper being bolstered by those 3’s who had not taken the opportunity to have a week
off.
An initial attempt was made to follow the international game and abolish the toss but with both sides
looking to “win toss bat” the age old tradition was required. CUACO duly won and Bexley were sent out to
field in the mid afternoon sun.
Good bowling lead to a slow start that saw the overs threatening to overtake runs. In the 11th over the
5ths lost their second wicket and Luke Hunter stride out to the crease. Having not troubled the scorers yet
this season the pressure was on. What pressure he cries as he goes on to make 42 and raise the run rate in
the process. There were cameos from Henley (35) and Lake (20*) but the fact that extras was the third
highest scorer with 27 made you think we should have scored more with the bat.
After the full 2 3/4 hours were used to bowl 40 overs OD CUACO ended on 178 losing their final wicket on
the final ball of the innings.
Following tea Bexley set about chasing down the total and the opener Grant H took particular interest in
some of Micky Boyden’s shorter pitched balls. He motored on to 50 within 13 overs before being surprised
by a straight one from Lake in the 14th. The 5ths breathe a sigh of relief, a few more overs of that and the
crowd watching the 1’s cruise to victory against Minster would have grown. All that is apart from Egan-
Wyer who has still not recovered from his mid-morning net and is using every change of over as an
opportunity to sit down and rest his weary legs.
Another wicket from Lake brought young Oscar to the crease, a mix up in the middle lead to possibly the
slowest runout ever by Smedley, “keepers, bowlers, he’s behind you... (that really didn’t help matters)”
eventually the ball is thrown into Hunter, not behind the stumps anymore! He has taken matters into his
own hands and gone to retrieve the ball off Smedley! A quick about turn and the race is in between keeper
and batsman, Hunter wins by a nose and the Skipper Simon is out.
Decent batting and not much luck to the fielding side on a pitch that had been doing a bit saw Bexley Home
in the 39th over.
7
Cricket was the winner here today, over 350 runs scored, 13 bowlers and 18 batsmen. Exactly what the
doctor ordered to prepare both sides to do battle next week in their respective leagues.

Sunday XI
Unfortunately, despite the Sunday sun, the game fell foul to the huge thunderstorm on the Saturday night.
T20 XI
Another year, another spectacle, the annual Friday night 20/20 match; OD Cuaco T20 XI against Langley
Park Boys 1st XI. We were lucky enough to be playing on a Friday and in perfect cricks conditions, and
there were smiles all around the simply packed arena.
I can’t remember who won the toss but OD Cuaco went out to bat first, and the walk out songs were
blaring. An opening partnership of Mike Parr and Dario Boyce set off to get the ball rolling. Some could say
this was an unfair pairing, others could say it was excellent captaincy, either way - there were runs… lots of
runs; and the opening pair racked up a huge 108 runs through the first 6 overs (18per over). Mr Parr
continuing his fine form of the 2018 season with some aggressive hitting against the Langley spinners.
Dario at the other end notching up a half century somewhere between 3 and 9 minutes. Needless to say
the current world Record 20/20 score of 263 runs was looking like it was about to be smashed into pieces.
Sadly, the dream partnership was broken with a tidy catch on the boundary by Langley’s Tom Mills sent Mr
P packing with 45 from 22; allowing Chris Webster to trot into the middle to the tune of
The pitch was too wet to play
8
MAYYYAAAHHEEEEEEE, a pretty jazzy boy. Dario and Chris continued to push the run rate, with some big
hitting- Chris with two flurries of hat-trick 6’s, simply outrageous ball striking!
With another change in the bowling attack to bring on OD’s very own Will East, who managed to out fox
Dario with some crafty spin who was caught out for 72 from only 30 balls! Dan Murrell fancied some of the
action and continued to play a good part with some steady shots as him and Chris put on another handful,
until Mr ‘I got bored on 50’ Webster decided to run from the crease retiring to allow our local medic
Eashan a slice of the action (the Holby City walk out theme going down very well with the growing crowd).
Let’s hope Eashan makes a better medic however as he left a bit out there only managing 2 from his 5 balls
faced. The momentum was picked up by captain Andrew Ainger and Nick Worsley, who proceeded on
spanking the ball to opposite ends of the country, who both ended undefeated on 14 and 13 leaving the
final score of 230/4.
Opening the bowling was Harry Deans and the Flying Nott; a point to prove, with his classic right arm fast
medium leg break chinaman blowing style. Would this niche form of razz/spin fusion mixed with some
steady line and length be enough to outfox the oppo? Openers James McGruer and Sims stepped up with
one thing to do- swing swing swing. McGruer with the biggest 6 of the day, sending one miles into the
carpark, the same distance as Notty’s bat last Saturday. Sims unfortunately could not match this and was
caught by Harry Deans off the bowling of Notts. Next up was Shiv Patel, the big number 3, managed to
rotate strike well allowing McGruer to step the Rate up. With the most controversial decision of the day, a
shock LBW being called as out by OD’s Umpire Steve Sawko, James McGruer had to walk, scoring an
impressive 33 from 12 balls, Langley had some work to do. Under video review, this decision has been
validated as plum, and after investigation for match fixing and Steve has been cleared of all charges and is
free to umpire next week. The next ball with a clean bowl of Tom Finan left Notts on a hat-trick, with the
batsmen crowded he proceeded to not capitalise on the opportunity and left it wide.
Some nice bowling by Harry Deans carrying the reigns taking the wickets of Tom Mills, Shiv and Sydney
Sherlock really did make the game look like it was over, however a stand by Captain Billy Wisbey and Sam
De Vaux steadied the ship. Each picking some gaps in the field for 5 4s each, both reaching the 30s. Newly
tested spin Bowling from 1st XI Captain Nick Worsley saw Billy Wisbey’s wicket fall and the door open once
again. OD’s player Joe East managed to contribute but was bowled by team mate Andrew Ainger. Japser,
Langley’s last hope batted positively scoring 19 runs at number 11 and with the help of Sam De Vaux
lasted until the last over. Yet with a sharp bit of keeping from Henry Hamilton saw the game over with an
OD’s win by 65 runs. Thanks to Steve and Yogi for umpiring.
Until next year.

FANTASY LEAGUE UPDATE
Week 4 of Fantasy League and again 4 games so plenty of points to be had. Lots of steady-eddie's this week with two notable performances from Chris Webster and Tej Patel. Dan Murrell played his first game of the season and added to his batting points by taking a couple of wickets for 59 points. Luke Hunter also returned to form claiming 52 points for the week. Bowling wise not a single fantasy manager benefitted from Tej Patel's 4 wicket masterclass which earned him a whopping 82 points. Will East and Alex Lake also scored heavily with a combination of runs and wickets. Nick Worsley and Chris Webster upstaged the rest of the all-rounders this week with Webster top scoring on a massive 148 points while was Andy Rouse edged out by Henners in the keeping section with 28 points to 27. In the table all of Cameron Sanders players scored him points leaving him ahead of Luke Hunter and Steve Sawko. Howard Smith's Double M's top scored with 652 points following his squad clear out - 11 players transferred out with his transfer wildcard. Rebecca Hamilton continued her surge up the table moving into an impressive 6th place. At the other end of the table Kai Bennett cemented his place at the foot of the table with a paltry 197 points despite being prompted on Friday night to change his team by the Author! Written by Andy Hall
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CHRIS WEBSTER - 148 points
A great week for Chris as he tried to emulate his brother’s heroics from the previous week. 67 runs, 3
wickets and a catch propelled Chris up the leaderboard ahead of Jamie Batten in the all-rounder field and
onto his brother Dan’s tail. The competition is hot in that category!
MANAGER OF THE WEEK
HOWARD SMITH - 652 points
11 transfers and a wildcard helped H to the top of this week’s leaderboard. With Chris Webster as his
captain, he doubled the POTW’s points and also had Murrell, L Hunter, Hamilton, A Lake and Day in his
side from the Team of the Week. All of Howard’s players scored double figures, and 10 of his 11 scored
over 20 points. He may well be having a word with Robin East ahead of Saturday’s fixtures as a result…
