October Sky Chapter 8

Jesus Cervantes

Dr. Von Braun launched

another thirty pound Explorer

into space on March 26

Big Creek High School had been

placed on a football

suspension for the 1958 season according to Mr.

Trune

Mr. Turner announced that

because of Sputnik, and the

worry of bad education, all of

our classes would be harder

After Mr. Turner read a short poem,

called Invictus, all the students started to leave. While leaving Sonny noticed that Dorothy

was sobbing and he wanted to comfort her.

Buck a football player would not be able to get a

football scholarship

because of the suspension. He

would have to go down to the coal mines. Though he did not want to, he wanted to

go to college.

After the bell rang Sonny noticed that Dorothy was

still sobbing and that she went straight out of class to Vernon

Holbrook, a senior

linebacker.

Homer told Jim that he will go to

college and he would pay for it.

Jim then goes on to say that he

wanted to play college football,

and that the college teams

would now never notice him. He also

blamed it all on Homer.

Sonny asked Mr. Ferro for some tin. Mr. Ferro

said that he had some this

morning and that he would have to trade

something for it. Sonny didn’t

have anything to trade though.

Reverend Richard had the

tin from Mr. Ferro for shingles. Reverend

Richard said that if he had

shingles he wouldn’t have to

us the tin ,but Emmett Jones

does.

Sonny Was now starting to learn

how too trade Coalwood style

which would most likely

benefit him in the long run.

Emmett Jones had plenty of

shingles but the only way Sonny

could have them was if he got planting dirt from Big Branch , to

make Emmett Jones flowers

glorious.

After they got the shingles

from Emmett Jones and then

traded the shingles for the

tin from Reverend

Richard they drew a plan for

their blockhouse on scrap paper.

After spending a whole day on the blockhouse, Sonnies mom

said that Quentin was

too tired to go home so she made Sonny sleep on the couch and

Quentin sleep in Sonnies bed.

Sonnies enthusiasum

took Homer off guard. Homer said don’t geet out of contro

now.
