Mike Pereira, Rules Analyst for FOX Sports, packed the Club Pheasant Friday with his attention-capturing presentation about his career as a football referee and his time serving as Vice President of Officiating for the National Football League (NFL). He charged Dan Ramos, a personal friend, with a “delay of game” as his intro was long but said there was “no unsportsmanlike conduct here,” laughed Pereira at Ramos’s enthusiasm and excitement for the presentation.
Pereira told his story about his, as he put it, “unbelievable life” to the membership, starting his career at the age of 20 officiating Pop Warner football games in East Palo Alto while he attended Santa Clara University. The “indescribable feeling of being the enemy” stuck with him, and gave him a chance to reach a higher level in officiating, taking him to officiating college football games before joining the NFL in 1996.
To Pereira, officiating is hard to “describe as a job.” In 1998, he and his wife, Gail, moved back to New York City to run the officiating program for the NFL. Holding that position came with many challenges, as players, presidents, and owners disliked you. “You start with 0 friends and go backwards,” said Pereira. But this position, for Pereira, lasting in that position for 12 years and working towards his retirement after the 2009 season, led him to his current gig—spending his weekends during the football season covering all FOX games as a rules analyst and delivering his “20 seconds of pure BS,” joked Pereira, when called upon. While Pereira retirement plan calls his to be officially retired and driving Route 66 by the age 66, he says, “I’m just having too much fun.” This job, Pereira says, is a “labor of love” and being “able to live my passion” with some his best friends, mostly officials, has allowed him to live this “unbelievable life.”
Pereira, giving back, has started his foundation Battlefields to Ballfields, where returning military veterans who are struggling become sports
officials in their communities. The pilot program has been launched in LA, where there are currently 6 veterans officiating high school football games. Pereira says his goal is to “provide them with a new team” where they have
clear missions and goals, something he feels they are missing once they return home from a tour. His ultimate goal, Pereira says, is to get one into the NFL.

OPENING REMARKS FROM THE PRESIDENT
Next Friday we are inducting FOUR new members into the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento. We will not have a
speaker program next week; we are taking the regular speaker time to celebrate our new members.
We have some really great speaker programs lined up for the upcoming weeks, thanks to Dan and Troy. Scott McCready, coach a group of young ladies presenting in their building
projects in Mexico, a Veteran’s Day presentation, a past exchange student, and a member of the Sacramento Kings organization!
Carol Bogart is going to be absent for a few weeks due to surgery
on her neck, we are currently looking for a replacement note taker for these weeks so we can keep publishing the Chips
weekly.
We are going to skip the celebrations this week and hold off until next week.

If anyone is interested in taking over Interact, let Charyl Silva know. She is seeking a replacement advisor. The Hope for Halloween Run in William Land Park will be held on October 20th. The 10k run is at 8 a.m., 5k at
8:05, 1k fun run at 9:30 -- costumes encouraged. Music and Costume Contest for the entire family, Treat or Treating for kids. The event is sponsored by Hope for Healthy Families Counseling Centers with locations in Elk Grove, Carmichael and Fairfield. For more on the Halloween Run, go to www.hopeforhearinghalloweenrun.org.
Publicity Chair Carol Bogart had a triple fusion performed on her neck this past Monday. Please keep Carol in
your thoughts for a quick, healthy, and pain free recovery. Carol, who does the coverage of the speaker programs each week for the newsletter, will be gone for a few weeks. We are currently searching for a temporary replacement to do the meeting and speaker notes. Please contact President Bill if interested.
The District 5180 conference is scheduled for May 5th-7th in Santa Clara, California. Online registration is not
open. The Rotary International Convention will be held in Atlanta June 10th-14th. There is a special room block
available to reserve lodging at a reduced cost. In addition, the rate applies to dates on either end of the conference allowing additional stay to do sightseeing, tourism activities, etc.
