October 8, 2013
Greetings, and welcome to our 10th AstriCon!
Ever since those ancient days, back in early 2004, when the young Steve Sokol and Olle Johansson met up with Mark and Malcolm Davenport, and conspired to run the first AstriCon later that year in Atlanta, Asterisk has gone from strength to strength – both as an Open Source technology and communications engine or platform.
That first AstriCon was staffed by a very small number of people – in addition to Olle and Steve, Jared Smith and Leif Madsen also helped out.
NETXUSA was amongst the eight ‘exhibitors’ at the event (they had a table in the hall), and over the course of 10 years, AstriCon has been supported by over 100 different sponsors!
This year, we are delighted to welcome attendees to this AstriCon from North America, Africa, Latin America, Europe, Asia – the individual countries are almost too numerous to list.
While Asterisk was once viewed as a hobby-project by some of the large incumbent PBX vendors, they have (over time) had to concede that the project Mark started has become at least a peer to their offerings, and in some cases they have had to look on as Asterisk grew in parallel with their decline, or even demise.
As you know, Asterisk has given rise to a whole ecosystem of people and companies delivering products and services around it – and this conference is packed with those people, so do mingle at the Exhibit Hall Opening Reception, All Conference Party or any other great social opportunities over the next few days. It’s these people who have made AstriCon what it is today, so thank you to all the attendees and sponsors that have supported AstriCon over the last 10 years.
There cannot be many annual conferences where so many of the community participate at such an involved level. Each year it is astonishing to see the contributions that everyone brings to AstriCon, whether it is a talk to deliver, a demo to show, outfits to wear to the all-show party, beverages to consume(!) or just lively participation in the varying sessions on offer.
While Asterisk as a project continues to evolve and improve due to the work of a very talented collection of people, we should also show our appreciation for the folks who got AstriCon going – and that’s easy to do, because they are all still here! Ten years later, and everyone named above is at this event (so look ‘em out and say “Hi!”). Now doesn’t that show that Asterisk is a project worth sticking with?
Enjoy your AstriCon! David DuffettWorldwide Community Director, Asterisk

11:00am - 11:35amIncreasing Security for Journalists and Human Rights Defenders in Mexico through a Creative Multi-Technology ApproachJuan Carlos FernandezDue to the increasing insecurity faced by journalists and human rights workers in Mexico, the Mexican government passed a law in 2012 calling for the rapid implementation of measures to help protect them. In response, Telecomunicaciones Abiertas de Mexico provided an innovative, practical, reliable, and cost-effective solution using an Asterisk-based system in conjunction with other technologies. The system was in place and operational by the end of 2012 and has been used successfully to defuse dangerous situa-tions to its users.
The system allows the journalists to send alarms of distress from their mobile phones in case of emer-gency by simply dialing a pre-programmed speed-dial number. The alarm activation automatically triggers a series of events and has the capability of notifying family members, colleagues, government officials, and security forces within a matter of seconds. Depend-ing on the device used to send the distress call, the system is capable of distributing the audio of the sub-scriber or the GPS location of the phone from which
the call was made, the latter being extremely useful when dangerous circumstances prevent the subscriber from being able to communicate verbally.
This multi-technology system can be applied not only for journalists but also in many types of security or emergency situations. It is only one of the many examples in which Asterisk, when used creatively and in conjunction with other technologies, can provide an endless possibility of state-of-the-art applications in response to real-life problems.
11:40am - 12:15pmUsing Social Media to Build Your BusinessSusan ElderNo matter the size of your business, you’ve got to be where your customers are. In today’s economy, that means being active in social media. In this session, learn about the various social media sites, including LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Foursquare and more. Learn which sites will help you build and de-velop your brand image, and which can actually help you prospect for and capture leads.
Get and keep the right people for your Asterisk-based businessPete CheslockWe all talk about how to recruit and hire DevOps- minded people, but something we don’t often talk about is how to manage and retain them once you have hired them. There are lots of studies and statis-tics that discuss how expensive it is when you lose an employee. Often times the business side believes the only way to keep employees is via monetary compen-sation, and this is a terrible way to motivate. I have found that motivating through autonomy and purpose can yield a much higher benefit to all parties. Most important to startups as they often are more cash con-strained and need to compete with more profitable and established companies.
The Theory of Constraints states that an hour lost at a bottleneck essentially shuts down your organiza-tion. What happens when your constrained group (most likely your evolving operations team) loses a highly valued engineer? In this presentation, I want to discuss some of the techniques that were helpful for me when trying to keep my team motivated, when the world was coming down on our heads. Techniques

CONFERENCE SESSIONS DAY 1: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9thWebRTC/Cloud | 10:00am - 4:05pm | Kennesaw
10:00am - 10:35amAsterisk, a key building block for great solutionsJames BodyFrom tiny embedded devices to thousands of call cen-ters and international mobile networks, Asterisk is now undoubtably the most widely deployed PBX applica-tion ever. Its flexibility, coupled with the innovative nature of members of the Asterisk community, have led Asterisk to be incorporated at the heart of a range of systems both large and small. In this session, James Body will take the audience through a whistlestop tour of Asterisk uses in order to inform, interest, energize and electrify the audience.
11:00am - 11:35amWebRTC? What’s the use?Jakub KlausaThis presentation will touch both parts of a few real-life solutions where Asterisk and WebRTC play key roles. The technical aspects of solutions mentioned will be covered during the technical part of the talk, with all the important details explaining how those so-lutions were built, what components were used, what is the future development planned. The other part of the talk will cover non technical aspects of those solu-tions – organizations, laws, and other things involved.
11:40am - 12:15pmA deep dive into WebRTC mediaTim PantonAn estimated 1 billion browsers will support webRTC this year, providing a rich new pool of endpoints for Asterisk systems. There has been much talk about suit-able signaling mechanisms for WebRTC calls. This talk is different – we look at the media side of the equa-tion. Our aim is to help firewall admin and the asterisk gurus to understand exactly what sort of packets they can expect to see arriving on their RTP ports when they adopt WebRTC.
(Hint, only some of them are RTP).
1:45pm - 2:20pmThe new SIP stack in AsteriskJoshua Colp, Mark MichelsonSIP is almost always a critical part of any Asterisk deployment. This role has traditionally been filled with the chan_sip Asterisk module but with
Asterisk 12 a new player is in the game, chan_pjsip. This new module is built upon the widely deployed PJSIP SIP stack and brings with it a new avenue for expansion and rapid development. This talk will focus on the overall design concepts, how it works, and the configuration involved. If you have ever used SIP in Asterisk (we know you have) you will not want to miss this talk.
2:25pm - 3:00pmUsing PHP/mySQL to Extend AsteriskDavid MartinA number of Web-based interfaces have been devel-oped to help end users leverage the power of Asterisk. If you haven’t found one that meets your spe-cific needs, how about developing one of your own?You don’t need an advanced programming degree to create an interface that’s tailored to your company and/or clients’ unique way of doing business. This presentation will include a quick overview of the main features of a site developed in PHP, including:
• Real-time Call History display• Creating an using a Blacklist• Maintaining a Speed Dial list• User authentication• Forwarding calls from afar• Patch-me-through logic: using call files to improve
productivity
Then we’ll explore the basics of integrating mySQL with the dial plan, and walk through downloadable examples of how to use PHP to bring it all together.
3:30pm - 4:05pmBringing Real-time VoIP metrics to 2013Dan JenkinsTrying to bring wallboards and dashboards up to today’s standards can be tough. Finding the right tools and technologies can be difficult. When you try to find something that’s customizable and lets you see deep into Asterisk’s statistics, the available options let you down. We’re about to change all of that, expanding on HTML5 and Node.js to create a fully scalable, web orientated view into Asterisk – changing the future of real-time telephony metric reporting forever.

10:00am - 10:35amThe experiment is over – time to get serious about realtime communication!Olle JohanssonThe SIP protocol as well as many open source implementations like Asterisk and Kamailio are more than 10 years old. It’s implemented, in production and done. What’s the lesson learned and what should we focus on in the coming 10 years?
We’ve replaced the PBX with a PBX and we’ve replaced the wires with insecure and unreliable communication over IP networks. How do we move forward into new services and platforms? What’s the role of the customer, how can you help building the next generation of communication tools?
11:00am - 11:35amAsterisk for Web DevsDavid M. Lee, Jared SmithAsterisk 12 introduces the Asterisk REST Interface (ARI). This is a set of modern, RESTful API’s for controlling Asterisk.
This session will walk attendants through these new interfaces, and demonstrate how to use them to build Asterisk-enabled applications.
11:40am - 12:15pmT1/E1 fundamentalsRuss MeyerriecksIn this presentation we dig down deep and find out how T1/E1 works at the signal level. We will cover frequencies and speeds, how data is framed and error- checked, how digital and analog channel signalling is carried, and how timing is propagated and recovered in the system. This will be a live demonstration using various mechanisms in DAHDI to explore these topics.
1:45pm - 2:20pmSpice Up your Asterisk Server with KamailioKlaus DarilionKamailio is a highly generic and versatile SIP proxy which can improve your Asterisk installations by adding lots of in-depth protocol features. This talk presents typical problems which evolve in Asterisk setups and shows how they can be solved with Kamailio. The talk covers the following scenarios:• SIP load balancing for performance and high
availabilty using Asterisk’s SIP Path support• Fix interoperability issues and support broken
devices – nice hacks• Detect and mitigate VoIP hacking• Kamailio as multi-purpose Session-Border-
Controller• High performance NAT Traversal and Media
Relaying• Adding a SIP presence server to your VoIP system
2:25pm - 3:00pmSIP over WebSockets and load-balancing on KamailioPeter DunkleyAsterisk now has excellent SIP over WebSockets and WebRTC media support, but what happens if you need more than one Asterisk server?
The traditional answer is that you put Kamailio in front as a load-balancer and now that Kamailio supports SIP over WebSockets this is still a good answer.
This session will show how to build a Kamailio load-balancer that supports SIP over WebSockets. I plan to deploy this load-balancer on a Raspberry Pi and build a small network of Kamailio and Asterisk with WebRTC support.

10:00am - 10:35amKey Aspects of the Largest Asterisk-based Retail Roll-out in the United StateskSteven PorterCost Plus World Market replaced their existing store telecom infrastructure with largest known retail based Asterisk solution. Spanning 4,000 extensions across 265 locations, the solution delivered companywide extension-to-extension dialing, in-store paging, call park/pickup, central greeting and speed dial manage-ment as well as many other features. This case study will cover the system architecture, highlight the key Asterisk features that contributed to the successful deployment, review the scripts and customizations made to streamline implementation and maintenance, and discuss some of the pitfalls to avoid.
11:00am - 11:35amTaking over the world on a budgetCassius SmithIn 2010 TWR, a global nonprofit media ministry, began replacing its mélange of proprietary PBX systems with Asterisk. The challenges, issues and resolutions of this project will be discussed. Also very importantly, the cost savings realized as a result of this deployment will be discussed. As TWR matures in its use of Asterisk, ongoing maintenance and issue resolution will be another aspect of this talk. This session will be of interest to anyone considering a multi-site deploy-ment of Asterisk, especially on a limited budget.
11:40am - 12:15pmBuilding a hosted, multi-tenant contact center environment for thousands of agentsMatt FlorellThis session will go over the hardware and software components, as well as the architecture used to create an open-source based multi-tenant contact center sys-tem capable of supporting thousands of agents. Topics will include dealing with hardware failure, inbound and outbound load balancing, carrier issues and more.
1:45pm - 2:20pmWorld DominationJon “Maddog” HallIt was 2004, and an “old telephone guy” (OTG) went to a conference in Atlanta, Georgia to investigate a piece of code he had only heard about a couple of days before. He was introduced to a young man who had
spearheaded that coding effort and who informed the OTG that it was his speech a number of years previ-ous which had caused Asterisk to be a “Free and Open Source Software” (FOSS) project.By the end of the conference the “old telephone guy” stated that “Asterisk would generate as much money as all of the rest of FOSS combined.” It is now ten years since that conference, and 65,000 members in 170 countries seem agree with this premise. This talk will look at some of the reasons why Asterisk and FOSS together were successful where other strategies might have failed, and why in today’s market FOSS is still the right answer for telephony and for Asterisk.
2:25pm - 3:00pmStop The Presses! 10:00am - 10:35amAGI/AMI to ARIMatt RiddellSession information to be announced.
11:00am - 11:35amImplementation Lessons using WebRTC in AsteriskMoises SilvaDuring this session you’ll learn several valuable lessons about implementing WebRTC services with Asterisk. From tips and tricks to troubleshooting and useful utilities.
Sangoma has used Asterisk as a WebRTC gateway interfacing with the company’s own Session Border Controller (SBC). This integration allows the creation of applications such as client-less click-to-contact email signatures, context sensitive click-for-support (where the SIP headers of an inbound call to support contain information to help route the call to the best support person for that issue) and other innovative web-based communications applications.
In creating this functionality Sangoma has uncovered a number of techniques that are helpful when implementing WebRTC, interesting information about the internals of the Asterisk WebRTC module and a number of debugging and troubleshooting tools that work well for this kind of implementation.
In this presentation, Moises Silva, manager of software engineering and the chief architect of this project at Sangoma, will share his experience in designing, implementing and debugging WebRTC services using Asterisk.

1:45pm - 2:20pmStylin’ n’ Profilin your Asterisk installShaun RuffellIf you’re comfortable around C code and you need to get every last ounce of performance out of your Asterisk installations then this is the session for you. The most important before making performance improvements is having a good understanding of where all the time is going currently. In this session
I’ll provide a survey of different techniques used for figuring out “Why can’t my Asterisk system process more calls?” and show how tools like LTTng (Linux Trace Toolkit - next generation) can allow you to trace multiple processes on a single system and across systems, like when you have Asterisk running on one box and your call control scripts running on another.
2:25pm - 3:00pmWhat’s Next: How to charge more by reinventing cloud PBX servicesBen KlangWith a low barrier to entry, the market very quickly became crowded, and prices fell to the basement. Now anyone off the street can get sub-1-cent per-minute US LD with no minimums. That business model is dead. For many companies, salvation came in the form of moving upstream to offering virtual PBX, or the more buzz-wordy “Cloud PBX”. But once again, the field is full of competitors and with very little to differentiate. Why should any customer choose you? If you answered “price”, you’re going to lose. This presentation is all about solving that problem: how to create differentiated real-time communication services that allow you to charge your customers for the value you create, rather than for the minutes they use.

He has been working in IT for 30+ years with the last 16 focused exclusively on retail.
Two years ago, Cost Plus started looking for a re-placement phone system for the stores. Steven evaluated many of the major VOIP telephone sys-tems including Cisco, Avaya, ShoreTel, and Microsoft Lync. Long story short, he selected an Asterisk-based phone system and rolled it out to 265 locations. The deployment was a huge success and delivered more value than originally expected. He learned a great deal on this journey and feels it is important to share his experience to encourage others to deploy an Asterisk based system, and to help avoid some of the pitfalls encountered.
