Hello October, Hello cooler days/nights, Hello to kicking off the final quarter of 2020...
It's hard to come up with things for the newsletter when there is not much going on.
We did have the LOH Social on the 24th at Famous Sams, we maintained distance and were still able to be social while we were there. I will find another place for October because we need it. Hang in there everyone, we will be able to do things together again soon, and 2020 will finally be in our hindsight! :)

Hello Tucson H.O.G.
It’s hard to believe that the year is almost in its final quarter. Where has the time gone?
I am struggling with what to say besides that I wish we could all be together for our meetings and have some of our social gatherings again. Just remember we are all in this together. We need to support each other and remember to keep an open mind about what you hear and read. Last month I asked about doing a painting. I have two people interested so we will decide on a date then put it on the calendar if anyone else wants to join us. As a reminder, if you are a new member (since March) or you have a “new” bike since March, send me a picture and I will put it in the next newsletter at [email protected] Sandy

Historian
HISTORIAN REPORT
October 2020
As the heat has subsided the rides are on. I have a few to report on as
the road captains are getting the information to me. I know there has
been more than what I have, I just haven't received the info on them.
For instance, Jerry Clark, Terry Darby. Alex Salcedo and I are all Tucson
HOG members but we are also members of the Arizona Lawmen. Who are
those guys you ask?
We are a group of either current/active law enforcement officers, or retired law enforcement officers
who love to ride our motorcycles just like the HOG group. Our mission is not just to ride though. We
are there to assist the families of law enforcement officers in the State of Arizona who are either killed
or seriously injured in the line of duty with financial and/or other means of support.
On Saturday, September 19th, we met up with our brothers from northern & central Arizona and rode
to the Tohono O'Odham police substation near the San Javier Mission and presented a check for
$3,000 to the widow of T.O. Police Officer, Bryan Brown. Officer Brown had responded to a
disorderly man call at a casino in Why, AZ and was killed by that man who ran over him with his
patrol car.
On Saturday, September 12th, we had approximately 75 motorcycles and several vehicles on a
fundraiser for a University of Arizona motor officer who is battling cancer. This wasn't an Arizona
Lawmen event, we just happened to show up & support it. Also in attendance were Tucson HOG
members Ken & Polly Kaufmann and Doug & Harriett White. The ride started out at the Pima Space
& Air Museum and rode through Tucson, up & down Mt. Lemmon and ended up at a resort for lunch.
Over $10,000 was raised to help the officer, his wife and four kids.
Tucson HOG member, Jessica "Buns" Babbitt, is very active in our group and our community. She
has organized drives to deliver much needed backpacks for the children at Aviva.
What is Aviva you ask? Since 1978, Aviva Children Services has strived to fulfill its mission of
providing enhanced services to improve the quality of life for children who are victims of neglect,
abuse, poverty, and are in the care of the Department of Child Safety (formerly CPS) in Pima County.
Aviva responds to the needs of children in foster care by providing programs & resources to enhance
their self-esteem and well-being as well as supplying necessity items such as clothing, shoes,
blankets, and personal care items.
On August 21st, 14 HOG members and their friends road to Aviva with a delivery. Tucson HOG
Director Ramona lead the ride (very short ride) with Jim (Bear) sweeping. Over 70 backpacks were
donated to this wonderful association. Thanks go to Buns and all those who made a donation.
Besides our love to ride our Harleys, this is what Tucson HOG is all about.
8
These are just some of the rides our members are going on. Make sure to check the HOG calendar
for other ride events. Others may not be on the calendar but on Facebook. If you know of an event
or ride & it's not on the calendar, pass it along so all members will be aware of it.
As for the ride slips I've received from our road captains, below are the four rides Tucson HOG
members have gone on.
On August 9th, there was a ride to Mi Pubiz C - River Bottom. Seven bikes rode 200 miles hitting
poker run stops #1 & #2. Lead road captain was T-Bit with Broom sweeping.
A week later, on August 16th, seven bikes rode 22 miles to the Coyote Pause with LRC T-Bit and Ray
sweeping. A nice ride with a great breakfast knocked off #3 of T-Bit's Poker Run.
On August 23rd, there was a 133 mile ride with the destination being Wild Horse - Tubac Jack's. Ray
led the ride with Ramona, Bear & Sharon sweeping. A beautiful ride to Patagonia hitting stops #4
and #5 of the poker run. A nice breakfast at the Longhorn Steakhouse in Amado capped it off.
And the last of the four rides was one put on by Harriett White. The group of 5 bikes and HOG
members met up at Old Pueblo Harley Davidson and rode a nice ride covering 22nd, Broadway, Old
Spanish Trail, Houghton and I-10. It ended up with a stop at the TTT restaurant at Omar's.
That's all for this month’s ride events. I left a very important one out, Glenn's ride to Globe. I missed
the trip due to an illness and haven't received any info as to who all attended. I'm sure one of the
other officers covered it in their article, if not I'll report on it when I get more info.
Until next month, get out and ride. And let me know about it. Stay safe, you' all!

Hello Tucson HOG
October is here and it's almost Fall. Our favorite time of year, not
only because of the start of the holiday season but because of the cooler motorcycle weather.
Miss seeing everyone and it will be sad not having
HOGTOBERFEST this year but I am hopeful that we will be able to come back stronger for next year.
Stay safe and hold your loved ones tight. Happy Halloween!

Hello Hogs Well it is now October, which means "fall" is here. We now should have cooler riding weather. While you are out on the schedules rides or just out on a short run for snacks, remember to take your camera. Take some photos along the way and do a few selfies. Then send them
to [email protected]. Be safe. Polly

Safety
Hello Tucson HOG members!
It’s September newsletter time. We are starting to see more ride planning
happening now that cooler weather is starting to take hold. We had a very nice
memorial for Glenn Darr as we rode up to Globe Sunday 9/13 and placed a new
memorial placard at his accident sight. We had 22 members attend the ride and
had a picnic lunch afterwards.
If you have an idea for a ride that you would like to take please contact any of the road captains and
we will work with you to get it on the calendar.
Arizona Covid cases have continued to decline over the last month in Arizona and Pima County but
we still need to be on our game with our prevention plan. Social distancing, hand washing and
sanitizing often and keeping our group sizes manageable to meet the CDC guidelines.
We are starting to see some break in our hot temperatures we have had this summer. We still
need to take precautions when riding to stay hydrated, keep spare water with you on your bike in
case you experience a breakdown or other unforeseen issue. If you’re feeling overheated / light
headed / dizzy or nauseated please stop at a safe area and take a break out of the sun and if
possible inside with air conditioning to cool down.
KEEP YOUR TIRES AIRED UP PROPERLY!!!
Ride safe until we meet again!!

Well, my HOG friends,
What a weird year so far, eh? I joined Glenn’s ride to Globe and very much
enjoyed it and was glad to see how we remember our friends. It always
surprises me how well our rides go—at least when we don’t have to turn around.
I have a little pensive news. I don’t want to say ‘sad’ news, so ‘pensive’ will do. In a little while, I’ll be
losing—well, part-time losing—my main road captain. Brother Jon’s wife has convinced him to revert
to snow birder status, so they will be spending many months back in Wisconsin. In fact, we shipped
his green bike up to Milwaukee just the other day. There it is on the Haul Bikes tailgate being loaded.
Jon has taught me so much about riding since I came here. Riding in groups, in traffic, in the
mountains. And he’s gotten me out of numerous . . . uncomfortable situations. (Come to think of it,
though, he’s been the one, who’s gotten me into those situations, so…)
But I’m so glad to have a fleet of road captains waiting to take over. (And Sharon, of course, to do
the turnarounds.)
See you on the road.

On this Day in History:
October 12: Columbus Day is the celebration of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born explorer who discovered the Americas for the Spanish King in 1492. King Ferdinand of Spain sponsored the expedition west in the hopes of sailing to India. In August of 1492, Columbus set off into the Atlantic with three ships, the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. Two months later he would set foot on the Bahamas and establish settlements on Hispanola Island (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Upon his return to Spain, he spoke of gold in the New World and thus the Americas were opened up for European colonization.
In 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared October 12th every year as Columbus Day. In the US, Columbus Day is celebrated by all US states except for Hawaii, South Dakota and Alaska. Columbus Day now occurs on the second Monday in October each year.
October 12: Thanksgiving Day celebrates the sharing of food and thanking God for the year's
bountiful harvest and family health. The origins of Canadian Thanksgiving can be traced back to two
events. The first Canadian appearance of the holiday dates back to 1578 when Martin Frobisher and
his crew came together for a communal meal to thank God for reuniting the crew after they were
separated due to bad weather. The second appearance dates back to 1606, when Samuel de
Champlain organized the Order of Good Cheer to boost settler's spirits after a dreadful winter. The
feast included entertainment and was open to everyone, including the aboriginals, and continued as a
weekly tradition followed by an annual tradition every autumn season.
Under British rule, the holiday differed in theme and dates until 1957, when the Canadian Parliament finally declared the official date of Thanksgiving celebrations to be held on the second Monday of October. This date coincides much better with the actual date of Canadian harvests due to the arrival of winter.
October 26: National Pumpkin Day seeks to promote all things pumpkin. Pumpkins are a large
yellow-orange fruit popular during the fall in the United States. Besides being a popular Halloween
ornament they are tasty and nutritious. Pumpkins are loaded with fiber, Vitamin A, potassium and
antioxidants.
October 31: Halloween, also called All Hallow's Eve, occurs on the eve of the Western Christian celebration of All Hallow's or All Saints Day - a day set aside to honor all the Saints of Christendom. Halloween is also a popular celebration with ties to the Celtic festival of Samhain, a celebration of the end of the harvest. The name Halloween comes from the longer name 'All Hallow's Eve'. In the US, this is a popular holiday for young and old and involves dressing up in costumes, harvest parties, and 'trick or treating'. It is celebrated every year on the 31st of October.
