October 2016 Administration Message Dear Parents/Guardians and Students: Welcome to the month of October! September was an exciting month with many wonderful activities at the school. On September 12th, our students, staff and parents celebrated the school opening celebration. Our Opening Cel- ebration focused on how our “Heart Treasures” will help us be Leaders of Hope and Mercy. During our celebration we focused on God’s wish, having us love one another because love comes from God. Throughout the school year we will continue to grow as leaders in hope and mercy and demonstrate through our actions, words and thoughts how we can live in a community of Love. During the month of October we will be focusing on JOY as our heart treasure. Through joy we are able to spread happiness to others. We will joyfully gather on October 6th at St. Thomas More Parish with our brothers and sisters from St. Monica Elementary. We look forward to celebrating the Liturgy of the Word with them for Thanksgiving. We will be collecting non-perishable items to support those in need. A special thank you to all the parents who came to our “Meet the Staff Program Evening”! It was a great night filled with a lot of excitement! October 2016 Administration Message

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students:

Welcome to the month of October!

September was an exciting month with many wonderful activities at the school. On September

12th, our students, staff and parents celebrated the school opening celebration. Our Opening Cel-

ebration focused on how our “Heart Treasures” will help us be Leaders of Hope and Mercy. During

our celebration we focused on God’s wish, having us love one another because love comes from

God. Throughout the school year we will continue to grow as leaders in hope and mercy and

demonstrate through our actions, words and thoughts how we can live in a community of Love.

During the month of October we will be focusing on JOY as our heart treasure. Through joy we

are able to spread happiness to others. We will joyfully gather on October 6th at St. Thomas More

Parish with our brothers and sisters from St. Monica Elementary. We look forward to celebrating

the Liturgy of the Word with them for Thanksgiving. We will be collecting non-perishable items to

support those in need.

A special thank you to all the parents who came to our “Meet the Staff Program Evening”! It was a

great night filled with a lot of excitement! Our staff enjoyed the opportunity to meet with you and

introduce themselves to you!

October is going to be a very busy month! We begin the month of October with Read in Week

(October 03– 07). This year’s theme is “One World Many Voices”. Picture day is on October 03,

2016. Individual and Class photos will be taken at this time.

Wishing you a wonderful month!

Marcel Evaristo & Lauren Hawes

God,

We thank you for the gift of love that you have given us in Jesus, your Son.

Help us to grow each day as His followers, with great love for one another, and great love for our

families. May our growing love and kindness show as we learn this school year and walk in love

together.

We make this prayer in Jesus’ name.

Amen

TERRY FOX RUN - September 29, 2016

Terry Fox continues to be an iconic Canadian figure in our ever-changing world. The students of St. Mary collected "Toonies 4 Terry," wore patriotic colors of red and white, and participated in a school-wide run/walk to show their support for individuals struggling with cancer. St. Mary students showed tremendous excitement and participated proudly!

On Monday, September 18th, St. Mary’s School participated in the Edmonton Catholic Schools Cross Country Run at Laurier Park.

Students from all grade levels and classrooms were represented. They trained each day at lunch recess in order to be in top form and finished with wonderful results. Special recognition goes to the following students who finished in the top 5 of their age groups: Chase H. (1st Age 8 and Under Boys), Julia C. (2nd Age 8 and Under Girls), Jaxon F. (1st Age 9 Boys), and Cooper A. (5th Age 9 Boys).

Congratulations to all runners! A special “shout out” to the coaches and parents for your effort and support in making the event a success! St. Mary is proud of each and every runner!

Read In Week

October 3 - 7, 2016

This year in planning, again, the committee has provided much opportunity for autonomy in READ

IN WEEK celebrations in an effort in making strong curricular connections. Guest readers from our

greater school community have been invited to visit different grade levels and we have also

planned a few activities in which the entire school population can partake that resonate the

importance of literacy in our learning. Our goal as always is instilling a love of literature.

Teacher SWAP

STOP, DROP and READ

Parents in to read

Buddy reading

Exploration of genres

Administration team as guest readers

And of course. . .

6th Annual Book Swap – All week long there will be an opportunity for students, parents, grandparents to bring in gently used books to swap! Bins according to genre will be placed in

the atrium area. Bring a book take a book every day! At the conclusion of the week, all donated

books will be gifted to children in the inner city who do not have ready access to literature.

If everyone brings in at least 2 books, we could have almost 600 books to donate to an inner city

school!

Books can be brought in beginning Friday, September 30th and all throughout Read-In Week.

Books can be swapped all week long!

And remember: Clifford says to be the best READ dog in town!

Thanks from your Friendly Read-In-Week Committee

GRADE SIX VOLLEYBALL - Save the Date!

St. Mary 2016 – 2017

Once again this year we will be hosting tryouts in hopes of creating two grade six volleyball teams. Tryouts

will run for three days: November 01, 02 and 07 from 3:20 – 4:30 PM following which the teams will be an-

nounced.

Training for the teams will take place Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of each week. There is a plan again

to participate in three or four tournaments, most of which are tentatively planned for the New Year.

All grade six students are welcome to tryout for the team. Since traditionally so many students come to play,

please ensure consideration is given to your availability to commit to ALL training sessions and tournaments

prior to accepting a spot on the teams.

HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES

SCHOOL RECYCLING

Our school recycles all empty juice and milk cartons. Students in grade four have been working hard to learn about and teach the responsibilities of recycling. Grade 4’s are chosen for this task because of the direct link to the science curriculum. Some of the Grade 4's were chosen to speak to the classes about recycling and

demonstrate what is expected.

Every day at lunch recess, a student from each class brings their class bin down to the atrium and puts the clean cartons into the recycling bin. The grade four students are responsible for helping to make sure the

bins stay clean and classes understand what to do.

Thank you to all students and staff for helping with this important task. A special thank you to all grade four

students for taking on this responsibility!

CHAPLAINS CORNER

This month, the students of St. Mary School have been learning what it means to be perseverant and

determined. These virtues are important when it comes to doing the right thing and being God’s

‘hands and feet’ in our school and our community. Sometimes we will face difficulties and challenges, but we

must overcome them through perseverance and determination. These virtues could make all the difference.

Do you ever feel that it’s really hard to do the right thing like standing up for a friend who is getting teased or

bugged? Have you ever had to finish a big project or a homework assignment that was taking a long time?

Have you ever been asked to do something by your mom or dad or even your teacher that you didn’t quite

understand?

Do you know that your actions can be a good example for others who are watching you? Other people can

learn what it means to be a Christian when you choose to persevere and do what is right, especially when it’s

hard to do. God is always there to help us when things get tough.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

-Philippians 4:13

Please ensure that you have communicated to the school office any medical conditions or severe allergies that your child may have. Follow up medical forms have been sent home for completion for students identified with severe medical conditions. Please complete the forms and return them to the school office as soon as possible! We thank you for ensuring your child’s safety and well-being! EPI-pens and inhalers should

be carried on the person with the condition when they go out for recess or on a fieldtrip.

We have several children at St. Mary who have life-threatening allergies. While we cannot ensure a peanut-free school, we do encourage parents to refrain from sending lunches and snacks that contain peanuts. Traces of residue can be left on desks, keyboards or books and can be dangerous for our students with anaphylaxis.

Thank you for your cooperation with this important request.

Over the months of September and October, students will be practicing Emergency Evacuation and Crisis Management procedures in order to be prepared for any emergencies or crisis that may affect St. Mary School. These procedures may include any emergencies that need evacuation such as: fire, gas leak, power failure during the cold winter months, etc. In the event that students and staff cannot return to the school, we will evacuate to Earl Buxton School and begin the fan out process to contact parents to inform them of what has happened and to come and pick up their child. Please make sure that all contact numbers are updated at school. If time permits, we will try to notify parents of an evacuation on our school

website and on the front doors of our school.

Our Crisis Management procedures include On Alert and Lockdown in the classrooms where a threat is in or outside the school. When a threat is present, it is important to lock the school down so that we can minimize the threat that is posed to our school community - practice of these procedures minimizes anxiety in students as they gain confidence in knowing what to do when an emergency comes in to play. Depending on the urgency of the threat and the time allotted to respond, we will post a notice that we are in lockdown on the front doors of the school and on the school website. Please note that all school doors except for the front door are locked during the

school day. When a lockdown occurs, the front door will be locked to secure the entire building.

If parents are inside the building during an emergency evacuation, they are required by school administration and the fire department to evacuate with all students and staff and meet in the soccer field behind the school building. This is why it is important for our parents who are volunteering to sign in and out of the office so that we can ensure your safety. When a crisis occurs and a lockdown of the school is in process, you will hear the phrase “Lockdown” calmly announced three times. Parents are to find a room closest to their location in the school and stay in that room (classroom, storage room, admin offices, etc..) until the phrase “All Clear” has been announced three times by office staff. Once this has been announced a message from the office will follow to debrief staff, students and parents and normal routines can resume. Please remember that the safety of your children is our priority. We will be practicing emergency evacuation and crisis

management throughout the year.

By:Cole F.

The Grade Six at St. Mary has recently embarked on a great adventure: Camp. Camp Warwa brought us many challenges, from team building activities to seemingly (but

not really) dangerous ventures like zip-lining or rock climbing. Camp was a place for lead-

ership and team building, and what better way to start the year than that? This was the

event that was just what grade 6 needed to come together and get the 2016-2017 ball roll-

ing.

Camp began like a relatively normal field trip, spent on a screamingly loud bus that

appeared to be going about 20 miles too far north. And then when we got off it was the

home of the nuclear mosquitoes. It was after that, however, that it began to get interesting.

A test of speed and wit in the forest was first up, giving us our own spots in the food chain

and leaving it up to us how to use them to guarantee success. After this drill was complete,

we would split up. We would face our fears and put trust in ropes, whether in the air zip-

lining or trying to find a foothold on the climbing wall. We would experiment with new

horizons in archery, and test our team-building tenacity in a rather unusual sort of scav-

enger hunt. All in all, this trip brought us together as a grade six team, and turned out to be

the perfect way to get us set for this upcoming year.

This trip would turn out amazingly. It was an experience that none of us will forget,

a day of all days for discovery. I, on behalf of all the Grade six students and teachers, can

truthfully say that this was an unforgettable day that will root this

school year in our minds forever.

Beginning this month, we will be sharing articles on the post-Synodal apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia

- The Joy of Love, on love in the family, signed on March 19th, the Solemnity of St. Joseph, which brings

together the results of the two Synods on the family convoked by Pope Francis in 2014 and 2015.

The Apostolic Exhortation is striking for its breadth and detail. Its 325 paragraphs are distributed over nine

chapters. The seven introductory paragraphs plainly outline the complexity of a topic in urgent need of

thorough study. While the interventions of the Synod Fathers form a “multifaceted gem” whose value

must be preserved, the Pope cautions that “not all discussions of doctrinal, moral or pastoral issues need

to be settled by interventions of the magisterium”. Indeed, for some questions, each country or region can

seek solutions better suited to its culture and sensitive to its traditions and local needs. In his address at

the end of the 2015 Synod, the Pope said very clearly: “What seems normal for a bishop on one continent,

is considered strange and almost scandalous for a bishop from another; what is considered a violation of a

right in one society is an evident and inviolable rule in another; what for some is freedom of conscience is

for others simply confusion”. Indeed, the Pope clearly states that we need to avoid demands for change

and the general application of abstract norms. He writes: “The debates carried on in the media, in certain

publications and even among the Church’s ministers, range from an immoderate desire for total change

without sufficient reflection or grounding, to an attitude that would solve everything by applying general

rules or deriving undue conclusions from particular theological considerations”.

Following this introduction, the Pope begins his reflections with the Holy Scriptures in the first chapter,

which unfolds as a meditation on Psalm 128: “Happy is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his

ways. 2You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be happy, and it shall go well with you. 3Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your

table. 4Thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord. 5The Lord bless you from Zion. May you see the

prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. 6May you see your children’s children. Peace be upon Isra-

el” (Psalm 128: 1-6). Because the Bible “is full of families, births, love stories and family crises”, this impels

us to meditate on how the family is not an abstract ideal but rather like a practical “trade”, which is carried

out with tenderness, but which has also been confronted with sin from the beginning. Thus, the Word of

God “is not a series of abstract ideas but rather a source of comfort and companionship for every family

that experiences difficulties or suffering for it shows them the goal of their journey.”

Amoris Laetitia - The Joy of Love

Introduction

Chapter One: In the light of the Word

Page 12: October 2016 - ecsd.net · 2017-05-04 · All ECSD students in grade six will write the C.C.A.T.’s during the week of October 11 -21, 2016. It is an opportunity for them to demonstrate

Do I believe in what I’m saying? Then SHARE IT!

The beginning of a school year is always a thrilling moment! Typically, we re-start and re-focus on the classic ‘3Rs’ of “reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic” which are so much of our formal education. Another component we should also review and renew is that of our conscience. A conscience is often described as the inner feeling or ‘voice’ which acts as a guide to the rightness or wrongness of our chosen behavior. Indeed, with and through a conscience we define who and what we are to become in our life and for this world. Consequently, the proper formation of a conscience is absolutely critical for a person to learn how to make the best decisions for a healthy self-awareness and self-esteem. This type of focus and effort is not selfish; it is, rather, something selfless. This is because it involves a critical self-reflection to develop a proper understanding of our neighbour. And such reflection is always to occur in light of the Truth in conjunction with the common good. Why so? It is because we understand how a conscience which is immature can be easily lead astray by the voice of the crowd - especially when that voice is loud or proud. We know that there exist right and wrong choices, just as there are good and evil acts within our world. We need to know how to the choose that which is good, for the good of everyone. It is for this reason we teach children how to tell the difference between vice and virtue. Vice - aka bad behaviour, quickly shows us why it should be avoided: we realize how dis-honesty produces reprimand, how disobedience brings disgrace, and why mischief brings woe. Whereas with virtue, we learn how industriousness breeds success, how courage brings reward, and why generosity generates gratitude. These are simple yet incredibly profound connections - lessons that are taught and learned from the time of early childhood. It is these which will help in the formation of a good conscience which will develop a solid character for adulthood. Children who practice and understand this will become the best of future citizens who are educated, mature, and above all, wise in their moral choices. This is why Catholic Education exists: to form our students in how to evaluate situations, how to feel compassion, and therefore, how to respond with actions that are forever and always befitting of a child of God. In turn, they will learn to live and give a witness to our society. Consequently, I am most humbled so many parents have entrusted God’s children to our excellent teachers, administrators, and support staff within Edmonton Catholic Schools. Together we will cooperate to provide the sure direction of a moral compass calibrated to the Cross of Christ. Indeed, if the beginning of the school year is a time to review the ‘3Rs’ of what we are to learn, then it is also an excellent moment to renew our ‘3Cs’ of who we are to become as a family of Faith: Catholics with a Conscience gathered together in Christ. The connection of through the Family, with our Schools and in our Church is the essence of what we believe: yes, through Him, with Him, and in Him - everything we profess in Mass each Sunday in the Eucharist. May the Lord sincerely bless you all, Fr. Dean Dowle ECSD Chaplain

October 2016

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever. ~ Psalm 107:1 ~ This hope-filled psalm, which is known as that of Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Many Troubles, reads like

a love story. It speaks of the many, many occasions and circumstances where God has shown his people that all things are possible through his enduring love. It is an excellent example of hope and mercy, which are the pillars of our theme for this year. Knowing that our God loves us so deeply is truly cause for giving thanks!

September was a month of newness and growth for Edmonton Catholic Schools. We now have over 41,200 students who have joined our Catholic educational community, and we opened two beautiful new schools to help make room for those students. You can learn more about our new schools, as well as upcoming new school and modernization projects, by visiting our website at https://www.ecsd.net/parentsstudents/parentresources/growing-and-improving/pages/default.aspx. The canonization of Mother Teresa on September 4th also brought some newness to our commu-nity. In honor of this amazing Catholic role model and leader, her namesake school will now be called St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Elementary School.

One World . . . One Centre, where students and families newly arrived in Canada are welcomed by Edmonton Catholic Schools, has been extremely busy these past weeks. The centre, which was open all summer to assist fami-lies, started seeing students and families for intake and assessment on August 9. In the three weeks before school started, 395 students, newly arrived in Canada, were registered and welcomed to our district at One World . . . One Centre. These families, and others, have been invited back to the first New Canadians Parent Information Session on October 18, where information about our District and schooling in Alberta is translated to other languages so that newcomer parents can gain this valuable information. This session begins at 7 p.m. at the centre – 12050 95A Street, NW.

October brings many exciting events to our communities. As an example, our annual participation in Read-In Week occurs from October 3-7. This is an excellent opportunity for us to put the fundamental skills of Literacy in prominent focus for our students and community. We are very pleased to be holding a series of Parent Information Sessions throughout the year on various aspects of the Inclusive Education model which we use to meet our diverse students learning needs. The first session is being held on October 19. You can learn more about these sessions at https://www.ecsd.net/news/pages/supporting-our-diverse-learners---parent-evening-series.aspx . Please join us!

We also have several opportunities to celebrate and grow in faith. Our schools will all take time to reflect on the goodness of God through the celebration of Thanksgiving. The afternoon of October 20 will see all of our teachers focusing on one of our 5 Marks of Catholic School Identity- Animated by a Faith Infused Curriculum, as they participate in our annual Permeation Afternoon.

Competencies are an interwoven set of attitudes, skills and knowledge that are developed over time and that support successful learning, working and living. Alberta Education has refined the language of the original competencies of the Ministerial Order on Student Learning (#001/2013) into a streamlined expression of eight competencies: critical thinking, problem solving, managing information, creativity and innovation, communication, collaboration, cultural and global citizenship and personal growth and well-being. Learn more about competency descriptors, indicators and examples which assist educators and parents in identifying aspects of a competency that are evident within learning outcomes, learning activities or assessments by visiting our website. https://www.ecsd.net/ParentsStudents/ParentResources/ProfessionalLearning/PublishingImages/Pages/Alberta-Education/competency-descriptions-indicators-and-examples-approved.pdf .

October 16 is the feast day of Our Lady of Schools. Many of our communities will celebrate this special feast

of Mary. Our grade 5 students will receive a special bookmark with a prayer to Our Lady of Schools, Mother of Knowledge, a practice which we began a few years ago. I would like to share that prayer with all of you.

Have a wonderful October!

Mother of God,

Our Lady of Schools,

Teach us how to walk in the footsteps of Jesus,

Your Son and our brother,

So that He may always be the Light of our minds

And the Love of our hearts.

Amen

Our Lady of Schools, Mother of Knowledge and Love, pray for us.

Sincerely, Joan Carr Superintendent
