Kids Plus Accident Insurance

Prairie Spirit provides accident insurance through Industrial Alliance Insurance that provides insurance cover if your child has an accident at school during the school day. Children are also covered if the accident occurs at a time when they are involved in any extra-curricular activities before or after school hours, including school trips. In the unfortunate circumstances of needing this insurance, the school will need to be notified of the accident immediately so that they can submit an incident report to the insurance company and provide the parent or guardian with a claim form. The parent or guardian will need to pay any expenses initially, then ask the appropriate medical authority to complete and sign the form. The parent will then submit the form directly to Alliance Insurance. The claim process is between the parent or guardian and the insurance company.

Industrial Alliance Insurance does offer additional KidsPlus Accident Insurance should you wish to purchase it. Details can be found in the KidsPlus Accident Insurance Package sent home at the beginning of the school year.

One School, One Book is a program designed to create a shared reading experience within a single elementary school community. A single chapter book is chosen, every child in K-6 receives a copy, and every family reads that book at home over the course of 6 weeks. Activities at the school coordinate, promote, and enrich the shared reading experience.

We will be completing a variety of activities to promote reading and comprehension through assemblies (involving fun activities related to the chapter s read), daily trivia questions, and other fun activities.

I am very excited to be part of this program here in Hepburn as I have seen first-hand how excited children can be reading the same book as everyone else! My own children are involved with this program in Langham Elementary School, and I love when they want to curl up with me and read.

I know that this is going to be a positive experience in the school as well as at home!

to our new staff

Sara Michalchuk

Hello, my name is Sara Michalchuk, and I am the school counsellor for Waldheim School, Hepburn School, and Warman Community Middle School. I hold a B.A. in psychology, and I am currently completing my M.Ed. in Educational Psychology from the University of Saskatchewan. I live in Saskatoon with my husband, who is a high school teacher, and our pet dog. My husband and I are outdoor enthusiasts and enjoy outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and fishing. A fun fact about myself is that I played five years with the U of S Huskie Hockey team. I look forward to my new role as counsellor at Hepburn School!

Courtney Kary

I am currently completing my Education degree at the University of Saskatchewan and happy to be interning this semester in the grade 8 classroom with Mrs. Smith. I am currently involved with our school’s SRC, and I am excited for all of the fun (and maybe wacky) events we have begun to plan for our school. In my spare time I enjoy reading, baking, and I love to run. I am excited to be a part of the school and look forward to getting to know the community!

Rachel Piatt

I am currently completing my Education degree at the University of Saskatchewan and I am teaching grades 9-12 math and science. As Ms. Frizzle says I am ready to, "Take chances! Make mistakes! Get Messy!" I am currently assisting with the SRC and I am excited to support every spirit day, especially pajama day! In my free time I like to go to plays at Persephone theatre, bake cookies, and eat pumpkin pie (it's my favourite). I am really excited to live in Hepburn during my internship and become a part of the community.

Meredith Rhinas

Hi there! My name is Meredith Rhinas and I am the new Grade 9 Homeroom teacher at Hepburn School. I attended the University of Saskatchewan and graduated with my B.Ed degree in 2008. Since that time, I have had the opportunity to teach overseas at two different private international schools; one in South Korea and another in China. My time spent overseas provided many wonderful opportunities, both personally and professionally! I currently live in Waldheim, which is also where I grew up and attended high school. I have a great husband who teaches high school in Rosthern, and two awesome children. As a family we love traveling and exploring new places together. Although I was raised a “Waldheim Raider”, I’m excited to now be a “Hepburn Hawk”, and look forward to my new role here at Hepburn School!

Danielle Bergen

My name is Danielle Bergen, and I am a Library Technician for Prairie Spirit. This year I work in seven different schools, including Hepburn School. I live on an acreage by Waldheim and I have a cat, a dog, and three horses. I enjoy travelling (especially to England), training and showing horses, and reading. My favourite books to read are classics, historical fiction, and fairy tales.

Safety Patrol Hepburn School now has a Safety Patrol Program before and after school. In the morning, Safety Patrollers will be out from 8:30- 8:45 a.m. After school, Safety Patrollers will be out from 3:00 until approximately 3:15 p.m.

We encourage all parents and students to use the crosswalks during these times.

Safety Patrol will not be available during inclement weather conditions and when buses are not running.

We are still looking for parent volunteers to help with Safety Patrol after school. If you are interested please contact Tania Bueckert or Leah Mallory at the school.

Jesse Loboda

My name is Jesse Loboda and I am the Sr. Electives teacher at Hepburn School. I worked here last year covering for Mrs. Andres’ maternity leave in the Grade 5 room which means I have become familiar with a lot of bright smiling faces down in the elementary end of this school. I live in Martensville with my wife. We have a small grumpy pet hedgehog named Kimi that we bought last year when we fell in love with the school’s hedgehog we were pet sitting. One of my favourite summer past times is ripping around on my race kart out at the Martinsville Karting Track, something I always talk endlessly about with any of my students. I am excited to continue teaching in this fantastic community and hope to see many great years out here in Hepburn.

Terence Niedermaier

My name is Terence Niedermaier and I will be teaching Grade 5 until January. I am extremely excited to be a part of the Hepburn Staff, and hope to bring my enthusiasm to the classroom. This will be my eighth year teaching, third within the Prairie Spirit School Division. I live with my wife, Glynnis, and our two children in Martensville. I graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 2008 with a B.Ed in Elementary Education.

Cross Country Running News This year we have 11 runners on our team: Rachel Andres, Marc Bushman, Luke Martens, Kenzie Munkholm, Julie Dueck, Vanessa Boldt, Mekka Balla, Judah Balla, Lana Dueck, Landon Thiessen, and Jaidyn Carey.

On September 21st our team traveled to Langham for the annual Riverhills Cross Country Meet. Our runners did very well, and as usual they represented Hepburn School with class. Our District Cross Country meet takes place in Delisle on October 7th.

A little attention goes a long way toward helping your child behave well. Here are loving ways to inspire better behavior.

Announce a “time-in”It’s the “opposite” of a

time-out—you and your youngster take a short break together before a situation where he tends to misbehave. During your time-in, you might color, play a quick game, or drink smoothies. This may prevent him from acting out to get negative attention.

Be playfulPretending or being silly can make

things go more smoothly. For example, to prevent your child from dragging his feet while getting ready for school, you could say, “Let’s pretend we’re astro-nauts. T-minus 10 minutes to blastoff!” Your playful discipline may not work every time, but your youngster just might discover that it’s fun to cooperate.

Enjoy poetry It’s fun to think about

what a poem might mean. Let your youngster check out a volume of poetry from the library, and take turns reading aloud from it. Talk about what the poet could be saying. Your child will work on reading comprehension as she discovers the joy of poetry.

Support for special needs If your youngster struggles with friend-ships because of a disability, a social skills group may help. He’ll practice strategies like starting conversations, listening to what others say, and wait-ing his turn to speak. Plus, he might make friends he can get together with outside of the group. Tip: Ask your child’s school counselor, doctor, or therapist to recommend a group.

Promote self-confidence Nothing builds success like success itself, so give your youngster plenty of chances to shine. Let her pursue her interests—even if they’re not what you would have chosen for her. Or encour-age her to learn a new hobby. Feeling capable is a great confidence booster.

Worth quoting“Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm.” Abraham Lincoln

Q: What did one pencil say to the other?

A: You’re look-ing sharp!

Positive attention =positive behavior

SHORT NOTES

JUST FOR FUN

Early to bed, ready to learn Share this interesting fact with your youngster:

While she’s asleep, her brain is busy orga-nizing and storing information she has learned. Use these guidelines to help her get a good night’s sleep and improve learn-ing and memory:

● Elementary school students need 9–11 hours of sleep—experts recommend a range because some kids require more sleep than others. If your child has a hard time waking up or feels drowsy in school, move to an earlier bedtime.

● The light from a computer (or any screen) can prevent your youngster from wind-ing down. Have her turn off anything with a screen at least an hour before bed.♥

Inspire a turnaroundSteer your child toward better behavior

while you run errands by giving him jobs to do. In a store, you could say, “Okay, you’re the leader. Can you find the garden department?” Or at the bank, have him count the coins while you count the bills. He’ll feel important—and be less likely to get bored and misbehave.♥

My daughter Annabelle loves

storytelling. She often uses her imagina-tion to act out tales with her miniature people and animal figures. When I heard her naming them after our family mem-bers and pets, I had an idea.

We gathered family photos, includ-ing ones with her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Then, I helped her flatten empty pasta and cracker boxes and glue photos to them. She cut out around each person

and pet and stuck the cardboard figures in globs of play dough to make them stand up.

Now Annabelle likes to act out family stories using the figures. She reenacts beach vacations, holiday meals, and more. Sometimes we play along with her,

each pretending to be a different person. It’s a great way to build her lan-

guage skills—and to “spend time” with relatives we don’t see often.♥

Fun with family photos

Hints for homework time

Make homework more pleasant for your youngster with these ideas for starting out strong and staying on task.

Get comfortable. Some children con-centrate best by sitting at a desk, while oth-ers do better sprawled on a bed or the floor. Kids who tend to fidget might think better while balancing on a big exercise ball. Let your child experiment to see what she prefers. Then, she’ll be able to focus on her work—not on getting comfortable.

Get focused. Your youngster could work in her room, away from siblings and the TV. If she shares a room or likes doing

homework in the kitchen or living room, help her set up a file-folder “cubicle” to block out distractions. She should staple together file folders (long edge to long edge) and

stand them up to block off her work area. Idea: Have her write

helpful information on the sides facing her, such as math facts or

words she frequently misspells.

Get started. Sometimes beginning her homework is the hardest part. Encourage your child to start with an easier assignment—the satisfaction she feels from finishing it may give her momentum to tackle more challenging work. Or she could tell herself that if she completes one subject, she can take a break to ride her scooter or call a friend.♥

Shaky science Can your child create

a building strong enough to withstand an

“earthquake”? With this activity, he will

practice thinking like an engineer.

1. Together, prepare an 8 1–2 x 11 pan of

gelatin dessert. Cover and refrigerate over-

night, until set.

2. Have your youngster connect toothpicks with marshmallows to create a build-

ing that rises out of the gelatin.

3. Grasping opposite ends of the pan, gently shake it back and forth to create an

earthquake. Does his building tumble, or do pieces fall off? He can redesign and

test again. Which designs work best?

4. Talk about how engineers might make earthquake-proof buildings. For exam-

ple, a low, wide building may fare better than a tall, narrow one. Also, which

shapes (squares, rectangles, triangles) make the base or walls stronger?♥

How to be careful online Q: My son is just starting to use the Internet. We set up “parental

controls,” but I know they’re not perfect. Other than watching him every second, what can I do to help him stay safe online?

A: Parental controls and supervision are important, but it’s also a good idea to teach your son habits to use on his own.

First, explain that “real life” safety rules apply online. For instance, he shouldn’t talk to strangers or go places that you haven’t approved. When he wants to visit a new website, he needs to let you know so you can make sure it’s appropriate. Keep in mind that sites with user comments or chat features usually aren’t good choices because they allow strangers to post or to talk to him.

Finally, just as in real life, he should tell you right away if a stranger tries to contact him or if he sees something con-fusing or upsetting.♥
