Sometimes, we get on a roll, dontwe? Were asked to accomplish atask, finish a paper, or do the fam-

ilys grocery shopping, but then itdawns on us, maybe at the check-outline, that we are unsure of the finaloutcome of our efforts. We thought

we got everything on the list, butthen, well wait and see.

Such was the case for my Installa-tion Service on September 9. Lastspring, when Rev. Nan Swanson,Associate Pastor at First Pres. PaloAlto, asked me to submit a list ofnames of people who would serveon the commission, I thought of

people who knew me, or at leastknew my face. I called Bob Bowlesfirst and being the month of April, how could he say no? Then I calledRev. Mark Burnham (Los GatosPres. Ive known Mark for severalyears he was an Elder on one ofmy Sessions way back when); thenMarge Palmer (you dont have a lotof choice when it comes to askingthe Moderator of Presbytery to

attend), Jane Odell (Interim Execu-tive Presbyter), Donald Foster (PNCco-chair), Louise Pollard (a friendfrom my days at Trinity Pres. inSanta Cruz), and Karla Norton (thecurrent pastor of Trinity).

Id heard of David Beamer. As hesaid during the installation service,he called some of my friends to findout about me, but I also called thesame friends to find out about him.Can he preach? was my primaryquestion. They assured me I would

not be disappointed. I wasnt.A bulletin cover designed by L

Greetings! Im glad to be backconducting the Stone ChurchChancel Choir! We are working on some excit-

ing music for the fall season, andduring Advent, we will be present-ing Ariel Ramirez Missa Criolla, inSpanish, along with a ChristmasEve Service of Lessons and Carolsfrom the British tradition.Along the way, we will be learn-

ing music in a number of styles, including lively spirituals, gospelfavorites, classical standards, andexcerpts from larger works.

We have added several new singersto our ranks, and additional singersare always welcome. Rehearsals are7:30 pm on Wednesdays. Be assuredthere is room for you in the choir,so if you are considering joining, now is the time!

The church school childrenhave raised $175 by reading booksonce again to benefit Heifer Inter-national. This went a long waytoward the purchase of beehives.Yes, bees were what they voted topurchase! As a result, we have alllearned how important bees arefor a healthy green flowering envi-ronment not just for beauty, butbecause they help farmers.

However, our total giving toHeifer is not yet complete. Thequarter towercontinues to be filled, thanks to the recycling efforts ofour own Fred Groppuso; he col-lects cans and plastic at churchand brings the money in quartersfor the children to put in thetower. The kids love doing this, and Fred helps us staygreen.

This Advent season, we are plan-ning another wonderful musical fan-tasy, Three Wee Kings, to showcase thewonderful talents of our children.

Seventeen children, ages 4 to 17,have already signed up for singing andspeaking parts. And eight parents and

adults have volunteered to help withcoaching speaking parts and work-ing on costumes. Della Smith, JeanRaby, and Bill Downes will all teachthe music.

Three Wee Kings will be a challengefor us, as the original script calls fora cast of 45 children. The score alsoincludes a small choir of adult women

who will be the Choir of Angels. And our church instrumental musi-cians will provide our orchestra.

We have an urgent need to identifymore children for the singing andspeaking parts - we hope to get at leastan additional 8 to 10. While the linesare not difficult, even with 25 actorsthe parts may need to be rewrittenand each child will have additiona

dialog to deliver. We are asking everyone to helprecruit neighborhood children, schoofriends, and relatives to join our groupof actors and singers. Rehearsals wilbegin soon in the sanctuary on Sundays from 11:15 am to noon followingthe worship service.

If you are interested, please contactDella Smith or Bill Downes for moreinformation or to sign up to participate.

(continued from page 1)In his preaching, Rev. Dr. David

Beamer lifted up the metaphor of theleft hand of God (the hand thatevokes questions and doubts vs. theright hand of certainty and absolutetruth). He spoke about our study oftheology as a lovers quarrel withGod. Then, with an unforgettablesmile, he sat down.

Rev. Mark Burnham gave me mydues: Listen to your wife. No really, listen to your wife, Ken! Honestly, Icant recall the rest something about

working out in the gym, I suppose.Anyway, I told Heather afterward that

I would do my best. Then Rev. Dr. Bob Bowles chargedthe congregating with growing our

giving. If we didnt catch his driftwhich was difficult to miss, Bob spokabout giving cash to support the ministry at Stone -- something thats harto grow and doubly hard to part withat times. I think we got the messageBob. I hope.

The day ended with a sigh of relief, warm feeling of hopefulness, and foodon our plates. From beginning to endId say we pulled out all the stops. Wmade a joyful noise to the Lord.

By the way, I want to thank thoswho stayed afterward to clean up. Wappreciate all the saints at Stone, especially those who pick up after us.

Blessings, KenEditors Note: A tape of this service iavailable in the church office.

Hearing Gods Call ... is thetitle of the current Horizons BibleStudy. One question asked is,But what does it mean to hear

the call? We often wonder. In the past month, Tina and

Chris Luebcke heard the Lordscall loud and clear when theyreceived a telephone call fromChriss Mom stating that his sisterhad been arrested and could nolonger care for her children. Thechildren would probably be placedin the Social Services system in theState of Utah.

They looked at each other quick-ly, talked quietly for a couple of

minutes and decided to buy fourplane tickets to Utah for theirfamily with the intent of bringingthe two children home to live withthem. Within a couple of days afterarriving in Utah, the guardianshippapers had been signed, a van for

six had been rented, some of thechildrens gear had been stuffedinto it, and Chris, Tina, Gingeand Gabriel headed home with

their newly expanded family.Another call was heard: for bunk

beds and their assembly, mattresses and mattress pads, sheetsblankets, a vegetable/rice steamera dresser or two, wooden puzzlefor Tina to use to home-teach thchildren, small chairs for the classroom, a couple of bikes, a washeand dryer to replace broken onesand clothes for the children. There

was a flood of response from members and friends of Stone ChurchIt became downright exciting to alwho participated!
