By way of a second-place finish in Sunday, September 9th’s final, and only, race, Robby Brown’s Angel of Harlem clinched his first J/24 US National Championship. The Florida-based helmsman came into Sunday nine points behind Tony Parker’s Bangor Packet, but Brown’s second, paired with Parker’s 12, gave him the Championship by a single point over Parker in the five-race series. Breeze on Casco Bay looked promising at the start of the day, but lightened throughout. The Race Committee waited two hours in hopes of starting a sixth race, but the wind gods did not cooperate at the event hosted by Portland Yacht Club in Falmouth, Maine. Aidan Glackin’s Mental Floss took the bronze spot on the podium with 42 points in the 48-boat fleet.

Joining Brown on the Angel of Harlem crew were Mark Liebel, Ron Hyatt, Aurther Blodgett and Brian Simkins. Liebel shared that the team prefers light air, which the Championship saw plenty of. Regarding Sunday’s race, Liebel summarized, “We had a very good start at the boat and tacked right away into the current. We played the current, instead of the shifts, both upwind and downwind. We sailed our race, and the end result worked out!”

DAY 1 RECAP: After several hours of anticipating the wind to settle, it came in at 6-8 knots, then increased to 8-10, allowing two long races to go in the books. Two teams were tied at 5 points: Nicolas Cubria’s Elvis and Parker’s Bangor Packet. Cubria registered a 4,1, while Parker took a 3,2. Local Carter White’s YouRegatta.com held the third spot with 11 points. Natalie Harden’s Giggles commenced the Championship with the opening bullet, in advance of White and Parker. Cubria then took line honors, as Parker moved up to second and Glackin’s Mental Floss made the top three.

DAY 2 RECAP: Along with the wind being shifty, so were the standings. Parker’s Bangor Packet claimed the overall advantage after posting a pair of thirds, giving him a consistent record of 3,2,3,3 in the four races (11 points). Brown’s Angel of Harlem shot up to second place with 20 points after rocking a 1,2. Glackin’s Mental Floss cracked the top three with 38 points. Fickle winds around 6-8 knots made for a long day on Casco Bay. Brown started his leap up the leaderboard with a bullet in race three, trailed by Matt Coughlin’s Fudgie and Parker. Evan Petley-Jones’ Lifted earned the next victory with Brown and Parker again in the top three.

J/24 sailors from around the world are looking for-ward to the 2019 J/24 World Championship in Miami, Florida from October 19-26. This is the first time in the 41-year history of the J/24 Worlds that the event is being held in Florida, with its sunny skies, palm trees, warm breezes and excellent sailing conditions. The J/24 Worlds will be held on the same course used by World Sailing every January for the World Cup Olympic Classes Regatta. The week-long event will feature six days of excit-ing racing on the emerald-green waters of Biscayne Bay, one of the world’s great yachting venues.

The prestigious Coral Reef Yacht Club (CRYC) will coordi-nate the Race Committee, and will host the opening night ceremonies on their sweeping lawn overlooking Biscayne Bay. The rest of the week will feature food, music and an open bar every night sponsored by Bacardi.

The week’s festivities and social events will be located just down the waterfront from CRYC in the historic Pan Am Flying Clipper hangar on the water’s edge at Shake-A-Leg Miami, the sailing center in the heart of Coconut Grove

that hosts sailing programs for the disabled and disad-vantaged. Measurement, boat storage, launch and retrieval will be a short walk away at beautiful new Regatta Park, a purpose-built facility designed to host regattas of large fleets, used by Olympic hopefuls during the World Cup.

Eighty boats and more than 400 sailors and their support teams are expected from all over the world, representing approximately 20 countries. Mark Pincus, regatta chairman and well-known Miami J/24 sailor and regatta organizer for many South Florida regattas, said, “The pristine waters of Biscayne Bay have always beckoned sailors from around the world, and the J/24 Class has always produced world-class sailors. This will be the perfect marriage of sailors and setting. In addition to the excellent sailing facilities, Miami boasts a wealth of great restaurants and lodging opportunities. Keep an eye on our website for our special hotel bureau coming soon. This is an event not to be missed!”

IJCA Technical ReportBy Alex Finsterbusch, IJCA Technical Chair

Personal Flotation Devices As a World Sailing Class, we need to get our Rules approved by World Sailing.

One of the standards imposed by World Sailing (WS) is that all personal flotation devices (PFD), or what we usually refer to as lifejackets, need to have a standardization.

So far, there are many standards going around, but the most common ones are: EN 393 (which was valid till 2006), ISO 12402-5 level 50 (this is the one that replaced the EN 393), USCG (U.S. Coast Guard) Type III and AS 4758 level 50.

Most problems occur because too many manufacturers say they comply with the standard, but then fail to follow the standard to the letter.

Many standards ask for a pictogram like the EN 393 and the ISO standard. They specifically ask that this pictogram is ON THE VEST.

The USCG does not ask for a pictogram, but the approval number has to be printed ON THE VEST.

When you buy a PFD, make sure it mentions a standard, has a weight chart since this is not one-size-fits-all equipment, and it needs to be for your weight class. You cannot use a bigger or a smaller size because it will simply not do its job. Also, when purchasing, take into account the weight your clothing adds to your own weight.

Mexico ReportBy Leopoldo Farias

Fall is an exciting time of the year for the Mexican fleet with plenty of very competitive regattas in that period.

The Club Nautico Valle de Bravo hosted the Independence Day Regatta on the weekend of September 15. As always, there was a Mexican night with the commodore giving the traditional “Grito de Independencia” and a very lively Mexican night with everyone dressed in the traditional costumes.

October was a very busy month with the Porsche Cup at the Club San Gaspar. This was a multi-Class event where the BBQ consisted of three boar, prepared to perfection the rotisserie method. Very good! It was also the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Olympic games hosted by Mexico. Racing was very close, and the regattas were plenty of fun due to this.We had the presence of the Admiral from the Mexican Navy in charge of the Pacific fleet who made a touching speech and honors to the flag.

Club Nautico Avandaro hosted their traditional “Oktoberfest.” This is a regatta they have been hosting for

many years, and the ladies prepare sausages of all kinds which they serve along with traditional sauerkraut and of course plenty of beer.

The weekend of November 1-3, we held the J/24 National Championship at Club Marinazul. The first two days we had good wind with the usual 12-15 knots from the west. Unfortunately, there was a hurricane in the Pacific, and our Lake needs to warm up in order for the wind to be generated. Sunday we woke up to a light rain, which persisted all day long. The participants were all eager to race and floated like ducks getting wet until the Race Committee took pity on us and cancelled racing. The winner was Kenneth Porter and crew, with Luis Alvarez and crew a very, very close second. It was a pity that the races on Sunday were cancelled since the first five places were all within a point’s difference of each other, and we were all looking forward to improving with the two races that had been scheduled that day.

THE 2019 NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP WILL BE HELD AT LAKE VALLE DE BRAVO FROM MARCH 30 THROUGH APRIL 5. THIS IS AN EVENT NOT TO BE MISSED!

Argentina ReportBy Nicolas Cubria

NATIONAL ARGENTINE CHAMPIONSHIP

On Friday, November 16 at Club Náutico Olivos in Buenos Aires, the Argentinean National Championship began. The event was developed in three days and counted with crews from Mendoza, Córdoba, Buenos Aires and a female team from Montevideo, Uruguay.

With varied but mostly windy conditions, seven of the eight scheduled races were contested. On Saturday, a strong storm and very low tide forced the organization to suspend the races of the day.

At the club, the regatta had good after-race events every day, and some of them until late at night. The J/24 Class in Argentina continues to grow and shows great camaraderie and respect both inside and outside the water. Proof of this is that there was not even one protest in the whole regatta. Saturday night’s party was sponsored by sailor and friend Ken Johnson and his British Pimms drink!

The Class is trying hard to keep growing in different parts of the country with the aim of traveling, competing and sharing experiences with friends.

The event counted with the special participation of Guillermo Parada (World Champion helmsman skipper of

TP52 Azurra), who on repeated occasions supported the J/24 Argentina Class joining various crews and sharing his knowledge. Thanks Guillermo for your support!

The event was done under Appendix J.5 with the use of jib and 340 kilos.

The new Argentine Champion and defender of the title is Matías Pereira (Pan American gold medal in Toronto 2015) with the Carrera boat, who demonstrated great handling of the boat with the jib. The top five is completed with Guillermo Parada in second place (Sea Wolf), Ezequiel Despontin (Morrucho), Nicolás Cubría (Rina) and Guillermo Aporszegi in fifth place (U2).

This event is also the beginning of the Triple Crown Championship that continues at the Western Championship Regatta in Potrerillos Mendoza (March 2019) and the Central Championship Regatta in Cordoba (April 2019), looking to integrate all the fleets of the Class throughout the country.

Canada ReportBy Katie Coleman Nicoll

A relatively quiet year has passed for the Canadian fleet. With the much anticipated 2017 World Championship behind us, many owners and crews took a chance to recharge this year. We had some pockets of good racing including a 14-boat turnout at the Canadian Championship in Kingston. Several of our members participated in events in the Northeastern USA to complement the lower activity at home.

Locally…

The summer came and went far too fast. It’s always great to sail in the Fall and look back on the land to relish the wonderful colours of fall with green, yellow, orange and red reflecting on the water from the deciduous trees that line the shore.

It’s been rainy, snowy, cold and very blustery, but we JUST finished up our annual Fall Series in Ontario, which runs from mid-October to mid-November. The only rule

we have is that if there is one inch of snow on the decks at 11:00 am, we don’t sail. Otherwise, the weather has no limits—except when we can’t get out of the harbour because the waves are too big! Our Fall Series often generates more interest than the summer Ontario Series because the winds are stronger and more consistent, which was to hold true in 2018.

The Ottawa fleet is now packed up with all the boats put to bed for the winter. They have seen tremendous growth, and now there are three boats owned by current and recent youth sailing instructors. Next year should be great. Five boats from their fleet attended out-of-town regattas this year, which was a first for them! The planning for next year’s NOD regatta has already started. Stay tuned for the event schedule to be released.

The Western and Maritime fleets have slowly been diminishing with the owners moving to other fleets that are growing in their areas.
