Every Life is Worth Living Respect Life In Maggie’s Story: Living like Dad, Maggie reflected upon accompanying her father in his final days as she faced her own terminal illness years later. Watching anyone suffer, especially a loved one, is one of the hard-est human experiences...Looking back, I’m convinced that walking through those moments with dad made both of us different and better people. God loved us enough to allow those moments– even and especially moments of suffering– to teach us lessons which helped us to grow spiritually and emotionally. Dad left me a legacy. He taught me how to live and die with faith and dignity marked by patience and grace. He taught me that dignity is not decreased by loss of personal control. At first it was difficult to converse in the face of life threatening illness. But little by little our conversation turned to life’s most significant matters. This became a time that now I cherish so much. I learned more from my dad in those last months than I had ever known. Since that experience I’ve come to see that the worst suffering is often not physical pain, which can be treated with competent care, but feelings of isolation and hopelessness. With the help of those closest to us our faith can give us comfort and strength and compassion and love can fill us with peace.

DEPENDING ON GOD
“Getting by with a little help from our friends” is not an idea that began with the Beatles. Certainly the idea of “getting by with a little help from God” goes back at least to the first reading today from Exodus. How we get that help, however, is the key to this weekend’s scriptures.
No matter how inadequate Moses felt to the task God had given him, he persevered—even though he needed help from the people around him. The Israelites especially depended on God for freedom. The woman in the Gospel, desperate and des-titute, had no one to depend on, but still she would not give up. She could not afford to bribe the unscrupulous judge, but she pestered him into weariness until finally he met her demands.
We sometimes need to turn to others to help us through difficult times; but if we always turn to God, we won’t be dis-appointed, for our help, the psalm assures us, is from the Lord.
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — As long as Moses’ hands were kept uplifted, Joshua and his men had the better part of the battle with Amalek (Exodus 17:8-13). Psalm — Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth (Psalm 121). Second Reading — Remain faithful; proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or not (2 Timothy 3:14 — 4:2). Gospel — God will secure the rights of the chosen who call out day and night (Luke 18:1-8).
