P OTLIGHT ON. . . COMBO C ASSESplit or combo classes are becoming more and more common in classrooms everywhere. This year at Walgrovee have one spilt class in grades 4 and 5. This 4/5 combination class is being led by Mr. Ruben Gonzales, lovingly
eferred to by his students as “Mr. G.” We are also lucky enou h to have Laurie Hansen, a Walgrove mom andstructional aide working along side Mr. Gonzales. Mrs. Hansen is completing a teaching degree and is spending
he second part of her required student teaching in this unique class. Spotlight asked Mr. G and Mrs. Hansen tohare a few words about this experience.
his year I have really enjoyed getting to know my students. T hey are a diverse bunch that are very excited to
earn. Because of this combined class, I find myself doing a lot f planning, which helps me to use the class time
ffectively. Also, with the help of Mrs. Hansen, we are able to t each both groups at their grade level. By having
rs. Hansen in the class, we have a second teacher in the cla s. She is very knowledgeable and knows how to
each students using new teaching strategies. Finally, with the help of Mrs. Hansen, Ms. Laichtman, Mr. Borowski,
nd Ms. Porter, we plan to have students group together by simi lar needs, which will optimize the student’s learn-
ng. MR. G
oth my student teaching experiences have been amazing. I’ve been fortunate to work with two superb cooperat-
ng teachers: Miss Biolatto in the spring, and Mr. G this fall. I wanted to work with Mr. G because he is a gifted,
ind teacher, who is patience personified. My favorite part of the 4/5 class is the common ground between the kids
f different ages and backgrounds, and the way they work together and help each other. We’re working in grade
evel groups in Room 15 that are much smaller than a typical classroom. The collaboration that I’ve enjoyed with
r. G, Ms. Laichtman and Ms. Porter is remarkable, and it’s exciting to be welcomed into a teaching community
f this caliber. MRS. HANSEN
