STUDENT ATTENDANCE,

ABSENCES AND TRUANCY

Colorado statutes and district policies continue to stress the

importance of parent/guardian involvement and responsibility

in ensuring their student’s educational development. The

Colorado Compulsory Attendance Law was created to make

sure that students from the age of six to 17 attend school.

Recent changes to this law include steps to identify and

monitor student attendance that is the result of chronic

absenteeism or habitual truancy. These steps include, but are

not limited to, attendance plans, referrals to community

support agencies, and/or referrals to the court system.

Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to

make sure that the children under their care attend school on a

regular basis.

School District 11 believes that mandatory attendance is an

essential component of student achievement and the District

works hard to make sure that attendance is accurately

recorded, monitored, and reviewed for every student. The

District has a goal to reach 95 percent attendance for all

schools, all grade levels and for all students. The guidelines set

forth in this attendance policy apply to all traditional, charter,

alternative, and online schools within District 11 and help us

reach our attendance outcomes.

ABSENCE-RELATED MAKE UP WORK Students have the potential to make up work for full credit for

absences from school. It is the student’s responsibility to

obtain all make-up work, including tests, when they return to

school. Students are granted one day of additional make-up

time for each day of absence. A school principal may extend

the period of makeup work for special circumstances. Any work

not handed in within the one day make-up window is subject

to a reduction in grade, per the policies of the school or any

member of a school’s teaching staff. Furthermore, teachers are

permitted to require absent students alternative assignments

to maintain the integrity of original assignments. These

alternative assignments may not be used as a consequence and

they should be of equal challenge, score, and weight in the

overall academic assessment.

INFO FOR PARENTS AND

GUARDIANS:

Notify school of current contact information

Contact the school for attendance related issues within 48 hours of an absence

Know the attendance policies at their school

Monitor their students attendance and grades

Provide proper documentation, if requested

Stress the importance of daily school attendance

Arrange appointments for after school hours

Avoid pulling your student out between 2:40—3:00 pm

Parents/guardians are encouraged to actively monitor their student’s attendance by using the Parent Connect feature of Q. Parent Connect provides access to comprehensive student information throughout the school year. Grades, attendance and discipline, as well as updates from classroom teachers, are easily accessible through Parent Connect. Please call 719-328-3613 to obtain your Parent Connect password and look for the Q logo on the District and your Coronado’s homepage.

however they are STRONGLY encouraged to attend with their

parent/guardian.

BRING A COPY OF YOUR STUDENT’S SCHEDULE! To better accommodate parent work schedules, Coronado will

hold Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences on Wednesday

evening, October 28 and all day into the evening on Thursday

October 30. Teachers who have unavoidable conflicts on

Wednesday evening or Thursday will be making arrangements

for conferences on Friday morning, October 30, 2015.

Conferences will be on a walk-in basis and nine minutes in

length. If more time is needed, parents/guardians will need to

schedule another appointment with the teacher(s). Sign-up sheets will be on the door or wall

near the rooms teachers will be holding their conferences. If a teacher is holding a conference

when you arrive, you may wait or reserve a time by signing the posted sign-up sheet.

We have set up on-line registration for Wednesday evening from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm and on

Thursday day into the evening from 10:00 am-7:00 pm. See schedule above for conference and

break times. Walk-in conferences will only be allowed on Thursday night from 4:00-7:00 pm.

How it works: We will be posting a link on our website www.coronadocougars.com which will

guide you through the on-line scheduling process. All you will need is a working/accurate e-mail,

and a list of your student’s teachers. You will select the teachers you wish to meet with, select

from available time slots for that teacher, submit your email and receive a confirmation.

Remember, time slots are limited and are on a first-come, first-serve basis. The scheduling

SALUTING AMERICA In 2013 District 11 partnered with The American Legion to

honor our veterans through the Saluting America program.

Saluting America educates and instills a strong sense of

patriotism in America’s youth, raises awareness of America’s

cherished values, and honors the sacrifices made by our

nation’s active military and veterans. Coronado has begun plans for this year's celebration which

gives us the opportunity to honor veterans and active duty military for the sacrifice they made to

protect the freedom of our country. Tribute Cards signed by students and staff will be distributed

and delivered to tens of thousands of veterans and active duty military in our community and

throughout the world.

Coronado will again be honoring our own staff who have served in the military. A special

assembly is being planned on Veterans' Day, November 11, 2015.

A variety of food vendors to make it a one-stop adventure.

Over 120 booths with products to meet every need for the holidays,

And everyday!

Santa Claus will be visiting both days from 1-3pm.

WHY Late Start Wednesdays? Every Wednesday students arrive for classes beginning 1 hour later than a normal school day. Teachers take this hour to meet in PLCs, Professional Learning Communities. What is the purpose of a PLC you ask? Teachers work in collaborative teams with processes and structures designed to make meetings efficient

and effective. They clarify and prioritize the knowledge, skills, understanding, and competencies all students must acquire. They share various teaching ideas and approaches. They construct and administer common summative assessments so all students learn the SAME materials

and take the SAME tests in the same subject areas. Teachers analyze the results from these tests and focus on improving their practice. They provide systematic, timely, and directive interventions when students don’t learn. They then extend and personalize learning opportunities for better understanding and mastery.

A learning tool for teachers to ensure all students succeed!

CARE & SHARE

Rotary Teacher

Diamond Award

It's that time of year when the Rotary Club

looks to honor teachers in School District 11.

The Rotary Club Teacher Diamond Award is

highly coveted. During the month of October,

students from Coronado will nominate

teachers they feel have made a difference in

their lives.

Once all nominations are submitted, the

Rotary Club Diamond Award Committee will

read and review all submissions and select a

winner from each of the high schools and

middle schools in Colorado Springs School

District 11.

The winners will be honored in the spring by

Rotary Club members, Dr. Gledich, and their

schools. This unique award is student-driven

and based solely on

student nominations.

Many thanks to the

Rotary Club for

sponsoring such a great

event and honoring our

great teachers.

The Coronado Future Problem Solvers Club/Team is

up and running. Students have met, and will

continue to meet on assigned Tuesdays from 3:10—

4:10 pm to prepare for their first big future problem

solving event on the topic, Treatment of Animals.

Working in teams of four, or individually as Scenario

Writers, students will work to solve four issues

wrapped around a future scenario: Treatment of

Animals, Disappearing Languages, Recovering From

Natural Disaster, and the Global Workplace. With a

goal to create a solid 9th grade team, as well as

several senior teams, FPS is always looking for

students who like to think creatively about current

and future issues. The next official meeting is

Tuesday, October 13. Please see Mrs. Schulzki, FPS

sponsor, in the north end of the library, Room 228, or

captains, Stacy Hayes, Hannah Levy, or sophomore

captain, Olivia Stenholm. if you are interested or

have any questions about joining.

FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVERS MEETS WEDNESDAY MORNINGS

COUGARS CARE Developed as a Coronado club to provide an in-house

volunteer program that democratizes aid and

philanthropy. All of us share a collective purpose of

enabling students, families and community members.

Thanks to generous supporters who contribute food,

clothing, sundries, school supplies, and money to

purchase those items we do not

receive in-kind, we ensure that

those at-risk have access to

enough healthy and nutritious

food to thrive. We know that

children without adequate

access to food cannot develop

successfully, families cannot plan for their future, and a

healthy community is one that benefits us all.

Cougars Care also provides resources to pay for class fees

in return for hours given back through community service

in and around Coronado. It's a win -win-win for us all.

For more information on volunteering, donating or

receiving resources, please contact Brent Urban at 328-

3742 or [email protected].

Cougars Care is currently holding its annual change

drive. If you have spare change that you would like

to donate, send it in to Brent Urban in room 111.

CAREER FAIR COMING ON NOVEMBER 3RD The Coronado Counselors would like to cordially invite sophomores to an important

event! School District 11 is hosting a huge career fair for our sophomores. This event

will take place on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 3 at the Mortgage Solutions

Financial Expo Center at 3650 N. Nevada Ave. Transportation is provided. See your

JUNIOR ACT & PREP INFORMATION ACT for ALL Juniors

This spring, your junior will be taking an ACT test at Coronado High School. The State of Colorado mandates that all juniors take the ACT on Tuesday, April 19, 2016. Scores from the April 19 ACT test will be posted on students’ transcripts and will become part of their permanent record.

There are several opportunities for college bound juniors:

· Coronado will be offering an ACT prep class on October 6, 7, and 8 and again on March 15, 16, and 17 after school. The class covers material from the ACT Preparation Manual. The class runs from 3:15 to 4:30 pm and will review English/reading, math, and science. The cost is $20.00; students may register with Mrs. Guthmiller in the counseling center. The Coronado ACT prep class focuses only on review of subject matter.

· Students may also select to take the Prep for the Future ACT Workshop at Coronado High School on March 9 and 10. The cost is $79.00. All juniors will receive information about this workshop in a home mailing from Prep for the Future this spring. The focus is on test taking skills as well as reviewing for the ACT test. Register and pay online at: www.prepforthefuture.com.

· Once again, we are offering a free ACT practice test for all juniors on March 2, 2016. We encourage all juniors to take advantage of this free opportunity. Students taking the practice ACT will receive their scores on a follow-up date and hear from a Princeton Review representative who will analyze scores and offer hints for improving scores. Last year a significant number of students who took the practice test improved their score on the state ACT test!

COLLEGE OPPORTUNITY FUND The state of Colorado is offering to all Colorado students the

College Opportunity Fund (COF). It is basically a reconfiguration

as to how the state funds higher education. The monies that

normally went to the institutions are now being given to the

schools in the name of the student. To take advantage of the

College Opportunity Fund, parents and/or students must register

at the following website: www.collegeincolorado.org. It is a very

simple registration. Once registered, the college or university will

take care of reducing the tuition for the student once the student

has been accepted to that particular school. Students only

register one time for COF.

NCAA INFORMATION If you are planning on competing in college athletics at the

Division I or II levels, you need to register with the NCAA

Clearinghouse after your junior year. The Clearinghouse will

evaluate the student athlete’s high school transcript and

ACT or SAT scores according to NCAA standards to

determine a student’s eligibility to play in college.

Clearinghouse applications are available online at

www.ncaaclearinghouse.net. See Mr. Colgate, Athletic

Director, in the Business Office for more information.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS Students who plan to go to college next year (fall of 2016)

need to begin the application process NOW. Many colleges

are encouraging students to apply early so they will be able

to get into the program of their choice. Students and

parents should direct any questions to their counselors.

Most colleges now prefer that you apply online. Students

who want to attend an out-of-state college or university will

need to request that application be sent to them or obtain

them via the Internet. The application has several parts to

be completed: the application, an application fee, an official

transcript ($4.00 is charged for each official transcript),

possibly an essay, and possibly letters of recommendation.

As one can see, this is a process. It takes time, so plan

ahead!

COMMUNITY SERVICE—

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR

ALL STUDENTS

As students apply for the National Honor Society, college admission, and scholarships, they find that a history of volunteering or assisting others plays a significant role. Many applications ask what a student has done over the four-year period of high school. Has the student committed to the service of others? Has the student demonstrated leadership within these activities? There are many opportunities in our community to help others. Students in high school should consider giving time to programs such as the Marion House Soup Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, Silver Key for senior adults, the Humane Society, the summer Park and Recreation programs, and other organizations.

This program allows students to take one or two classes at either Pikes Peak Community College or at UCCS. Interested students should see their counselor as soon as possible. Registration, Accuplacer scores, and all paperwork submission deadline for the program is November 1 for spring semester. There are restrictions as to which classes students are allowed to take at UCCS or PPCC. CU Gold Program Students may also select to take classes at Coronado High School for college credit through CU Denver and/or UCCS. This is an excellent opportunity to get a jump on college classes and credits. See Mrs. Schulzki in the media center for more information.

COLLEGE VISITS TO COUNSELING CENTER Many colleges and universities send admissions representatives to Coronado throughout the year to visit with interested students. Students are informed via the daily announcements, and the names of the schools, dates and times are posted on the counseling center “college visit” calendar found in the hallway just outside the counseling office. This is a great opportunity for juniors and seniors to gain valuable information. Students must obtain a pass from the counseling center to be excused from class to meet with the admissions representatives.

TRANSCRIPT INFORMATION FOR COLLEGE BOUND STUDENTS College applications are due soon. Hopefully, you

are working hard on them! The counselors suggest

that all applications are completed by December

1st. The deadline for requesting an official

transcript prior to Winter Break is December 17,

2015. Availability of official transcripts will resume

on January 6, 2016. For those students interested

in applying to a Colorado college, check out

www.collegeincolorado.org. We have found this

site to be very helpful.

FINANCIAL AID - FAFSA INFO The FAFSA form needs to be completed as soon as

possible after January 1st so that colleges can

prepare a financial aid package for your student.

Complete the FAFSA form online at

www.fafsa.ed.gov Please visit the website now to

apply for a personal identification number (PIN).

Both the student and the parent need a pin

number.

FAFSA COMPLETION NIGHT AT

CORONADO! We are hosting the second annual FAFSA

Completion Night on Wednesday, February 10th, in

the media center. Time is 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Parents

and seniors: come get individualized assistance in

completing this important document.

CAMPUS VISITS Would you like to tour your prospective college

campus? Campus visit information is available on

each of the college or university websites. If you

need help in obtaining the information or website,

see your counselor. Internet access is also

available in the counseling center.

Deadlines… Deadlines! Guess what? In the world of college admission,

deadlines are for real. Ignore them and you’re

out of luck. Pay attention to the deadlines for:

College Applications – Many of the private

institutions have January 1 deadlines. As

we approach the end of the semester, be

sure to allow at least 10 working days for

counselor and teacher recommendations.

Transcript requests must be made by

December 17 for applications being mailed

before Winter Break.

Filing for Financial Aid – Schools have their

own deadlines for when the FAFSA results

must be received. Priority deadlines are

just that – those that file by a priority

deadline will have a better chance of having

their financial needs met if they qualify for

financial aid. Common deadline is March 1.

Scholarships also have strict deadlines –

make sure you follow them closely.

Merit Awards – Large universities, such as

CSU, award merit scholarships to the top

students who have applied by a certain

date. READ, ASK QUESTIONS, AND BE

INFORMED.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION Scholarship notices are posted in the counseling

center and are available on the Coronado web page

at www.coronadocougars.com. Make certain that

your student is checking for appropriate scholarships.

Many colleges have their own “in house” scholarship

application. Students may also shop for numerous

STUDENT CREATED ONLINE ADVANCED LEARNING PLANS

Students will be able to participate in creating their own ALP* goal

this year simply by going online and connecting to Coronado’s

GRT’s (Mrs. Schulzki’s) website. This plan will allow students to

address their identified area of talent, test scores, giftedness and

growth, college or post-secondary planning, as well as interests

and pursuits, and can be added on to each year.

The schedule for accessing and turning in online ALPs is listed at

right. A letter to Coronado GT parents was sent out on September

30 to discuss the secondary Gifted and Talented program in District

11, along with an overview of the student driven, Advanced

Learning Plan. I will meet with identified GT students throughout the year during their Cougar Connect period

by grade levels. The first meeting, with 9th graders and twice exceptional students, will be held by Wednesday,

October 7 during Cougar Connect, and at that time, I will review the ALP process. The sophomore meeting will

be held Wednesday, December 2, with juniors meeting with me during Cougar Connect on Wednesday,

January 20, 2016. Consultations will follow, if desired. No class meeting will be held with seniors, but they are

encouraged to complete an ALP.

Seniors can consult with me, Mrs. Schulzki, throughout the year with their specific needs. This is a great

opportunity for GT students to keep a record of their high school experience and build a useful resume,

making it easier for them to access once students reach their senior year, and can call upon this record to

assist with college applications and scholarships. All information and directions can be found on Mrs. Schulzki’s

teacher page at:

ADVANCED PLACEMENT TESTING INFORMATION Students currently taking Advanced Placement courses, or enrolled for next semester, will have the option to sit

for the AP test(s) during the AP exam period from May 2-13, 2016. In order to be considered for college level

credit most colleges suggest students will need to earn a 3, 4, or 5 on the exam. Each exam will be paid for by

School District 11. Students and parents will be registering online this year. Mrs. Schulzki will visit AP classes in

late January and early February to preview registration prior to the registration period and provide online

registration instructions. If your child needs any accommodations for these exams, please check with your

child’s counselor as soon as possible in order to establish those accommodations with the College Board. Dates

and helpful information can be found at the website link: https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/takingtheexam/

AP & CU Gold/Succeed

The dual enrollment registration period for Fall 2015 courses ends October 5 for UC Denver and October 16 for

UCCS. As an investment in our students, all tuition will be paid by School District 11, as long as students earn an

A, B, or C in their enrolled course(s), sign the Tuition Contract, and are students in good standing. If students

fail to pass the course with a D or better, they will be placed under financial obligation in the Coronado

Business Office.

Please make sure your child has discussed these courses with you and have them return the signed tuition

contract to their teacher or Mrs. Schulzki (CU Gold coordinator – Rm. 228/North end of the Library). For a list

of courses by college go to Coronado High School’s webpage, http://coronado.d11.org/Pages/default.aspx

and click on CU Gold under Quick Links. This will take you to Mrs. Schulzki’s webpage and click on CU Gold on

the menu. All Fall 2015 classes and registration course numbers are listed.

CLASS & PROGRAM 14

Coronado Woodshop Classes have started a project utilizing Math in Construction. This allows students to learn about all facets of the construction and building trades industry through “real world” applications of class topics like building a complex shed or playhouse. Focusing on math and geometry will be the main vehicle used to attain this goal. By

contextualizing these two curriculums the goal will be for each student to gain a better understanding of both disciplines, which makes them more marketable to industry as they look at future careers/post secondary education. This course is being taught my Mr. Hilty as part of the Woodshop Program.

A group of AVID students recently received training in Restorative Justice from the Youth Transformation Center. During the training, the students gained skills to facilitate restorative conversations between victims and offenders of minor crimes. The students will serve on committees through the court system, at neighboring schools, and at Coronado. The facilitators commented that our students were one of

the best groups they had trained in a long time. They were both dedicated and quick to learn. Once again, Coronado Cougars are making our community proud! AVID Students will attend an out-of-state college fair at the University of Colorado-Boulder on Friday, October 9. Please support them as they explore different paths to their futures!
