Tim Balice, last year’s interim assistant coach, is now the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach. The Western Michigan University graduate played football and volleyball while working on his bachelor’s degrees in Biomedical Science and Exercise Science. Balice has coached at Heritage Christian Academy in Kalamazoo and also coaches with the local Dead Frog/Far Out Volleyball Club.
“A passion for hard work in academics and athletics were a cornerstone of my collegiate experience and will continue to be the focus of my coaching philosophy,” Balice said. “I am looking forward to coaching a game that I love and helping form quality student-athletes who are dedicated to bettering themselves on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.”
Balice said the team has great potential. There are six sophomores returning to the team this year and eight incoming freshmen. Balice expects returning sophomore Tylier Bookout to be a leader. Bookout, a St. Joseph native, is an outside hitter. “She’s a great athlete who had a high hitting percentage last year,” Balice said.
Returning sophomore Katie Jazayeri, a middle blocker from Otsego, led the conference in blocking last year and Balice is certain that she’ll be just as strong this year.
Hannah Williams, a sophomore defensive specialist from Delton Kellogg, will surely contribute to strengthening the Cougar’s defensive back court.
Although the team didn’t perform well last year, the returning sophomores have trained relentlessly this spring and off-season to prepare for the fall season. “We’re going to be big and we’re going to be very athletic,” Balice said. “We’re going to have to put in a lot of work in the pre-season, but we’re up for that. We need to progress as a team and come together.”
Balice said he thinks the team has a lot of potential. He’s anxious to see his players connect with the community and with each other over the coming season.
