which evolved from a need for workers to run the spinning frames and weaving l ooms i n the mill . when originally formed , the mill village was not built as a part of an existing city but was built as an entiety unto itself . The company provided f or its employees and their fam i lies every human need .

The mill was built on the banks of the Chattahoochee River because of the avail ability of water power to operate . There was a grist mill , a large f arm and very li ttle else when the West Point Manufacturing Company built the mill in 1866 .

The first houses built were those on 19th Avenue , one block from the mill . By 1987. many houses had been built . part of the mill had burned and had been rebuilt and there were churches and schools already in existance .

In recent months , Langdale mill has experienced change through a corporate r aid on WestPoint Pepperell . In spite of these corporate changes . the mill still makes the same cotton duck that it made when originally opened , and has remained productive and profitable.

HISTORY OF LANGDALE

Lanqdale had its beqinninq in 18&6 when the cotton industry came to the Chattahoochee River Valley in East Alabama. The War Between The States had just ended. Two separate qroups of mercha nts and planters looked at their ruined plantations and businesses and found enouqh capital to start two mills. The Chattahoochee Mill was the one located in what became Lanqdale.

The land had for.erly belonqed to the Creek Indians . A map of its t i 1112 showed N. Moore, three peapl e nailed Powe 11, and a host of Indian names who owned the lots. After 1832, these people left their land and houses and moved west. The creek runninq throuqh town still bears the name of Moore.

Later a qrist mill was built where the creek and river met. It was operated by Elisha Trammell. who became owner of much of the property ad .jacent. Near this spot in 18&& was located the textile lIill.

In the Panic of 1873. the Chattahoochee Mill failed, but was re-opened in 1880 by two younq businessmen. w.e. Lanier and LaFayette Lanier added capital and more knowledqe then beqan the West Point Manufacturinq Company. Their product was a cotton duck called "Oceanic Duck", which becalle in qreat demand for sailinq ships around the world. Also, it was used for the many covered waqons used to open the West.

The Laniers brouqht in a textile expert fro_ Enqland by the nalle of TOM Lanq. It was for hill that the textile villaqe was named Lanqdale.

The mill employed about and prospered.

was two

four stories hiqh, contained hundred people . It survived

fifty 1001115, and flood and fire.

Sixty-one houses were built at first to house the workers who came in from the farm~ from all of the surroundinq counties. The houses surpassed the sinqle pen or double pen houses of the Creeks. Most were three roolll dwellinqs with porches. constructed of wood fralne. Some were larQer, to accommodate larQer families or people in supervisory positions. Rent for each was, at first, twenty-five cents a rOOM each week, includinq utilities as these were added.

As the number of families increased, the manufacturinq company added houses, until there were between two and three hundred. So many workers came from Randolph country that their neiqhborhood became "Randolph Hill." There was also a "Tallassee Street . " Ot~er neiqhborhoods were " Cemetery Hill", "School Hill", " Pars o naqe Hill", and " New Street", the latest addition.

Other people move d to town with occupations to serve the textile workers : doctors, lawyers, storekeepers, barbers, dairymen, etc. These built hOlies aMidst those already established.

The people had worshipped in a brush arbor they built until a qroup of them asked the mill owners for help in buildinq a church . The Company qa v e the land and most of the money. This Union Church was used by all. In lq30 the church people were ready for buildinqs to house each denolllination. Aqain, the Company qa ve land and offered to match funds, a dollar for every two dollars raised by the people. Methodist, Baptist. Christian, and Nazarene Churches were built.

Mr. LaFayette Lanier, Jr., who was aQent for the COllpany, lived with his wife and SiK children on a hill oyerlookinq LanQdale. They opened their home for parties for the younq people of the YillaQe. Their tennis courts were constantly beinq used. In so many ways they endeared thellselyes to the people. Mrs. Lanier was a ready source of help as she Quietly and anony~ousl y qaye to all in need durinq the hard depression days and afterward . After Mr. Lanier's death the new school and the fountain park were named in his memory . Mrs . Lanier was later the pianist and choir director for the Lanqdale Methodist Church.

The mill owners were eaqer to offer educational ad Yantaqes to the residents of Lanqdale. Fine schools were built and donated by West Point Manufacturinq Co~pany, which also furnished free teNt boo ks and supplemented teachRrs' salaries .

Lanqdale had the first free kinderQarten in Alaba~a.

Operated and paid for comp l etely by the company. it served all four -and five-year-old children, reqardless of their parents' place of employ~ent. This continued until the state took oyer the kinderqartens a few years aqo .

Cultural ad ya ntaqes were not overlooked. Some of Metropolitan's finest sinqers were brouqht i n to qiye concerts. Biq name bands perfor.ed. A library was established and a ~oYie

theatre. Sports events were a favorite. Professional ball players

were hired. A qYllnasium was built and a recreation proqram established. Included was a larqe swimminq pool.

Christmas was very special in Lanqdale . West Point Manufacturinq Co. saw to that . A tree reachinq the rafters of the qymnasiu~ was beautifully decorated and under it was a sack of fruit and a toy for each child in town. Earlier in the year the school teachers had Qone door-to-door to ask the name and aqe of e very child. They had taqqed the Qifts. so that at the tree every child c oul~ ~ear "Santa's helper" call his or her name and receive the qift and fruit. Early in the morninQ of the day before Christmas, almost every famil y in town would arrive to fill its place in the bleachers of the qym. After a devotional and sinqinq, the Boy and Girl Scouts would start Qi y inq out the qifts as ~Sant a" called naMes.

In addition to the Christmas tree at the Qy mnasium, other liqhted trees were placed throuqhout the Yill a Qe . On a tall antenna at one place a li qhted "Madonna and Chi l d" could be seen by all the townspeople, as well as those qoinq down hiqhway 2Q.

The kinderqarten became Santa's Workshop where Mr. and Mr~. Santa and their elves were seen each niqht workinq on toys.

Perhaps the qreatest exhibit was the nativity scene beaun in

After the two oriqinal Laniers, Mr. Georqe H. Lanier se r ved as company president . He was instru~ental in ~ore social development for the people. Both the Boy Scout Council and the hospital bear his name. A Boy Scout hut and a Girl Scout little house were built for the troops, which met weekly.

In 1950. a fine hospital was built in Lanqdale, beinq the first hospital built in Alabama under the Hill-Burton Act . A nursinq home and a medical park of doctors ' offices were added. Each te ~ tile worker and many others qa v e a da y 's pay to help build the hospital . West Point Manufacturinq Co. bore a la r QI! part of the cost, also.

Mr . GeorQe Lanier was followed as pr esident by Mr. Joseph Lanier , Sr. and then Joseph L. Lanier, Jr. All ha v e had the sam e philanth r opic nature. The Company became WestPoint Pepperell, one of the nation's larqest.

Around 1950. the houses which had been built were sold to the workers who occupied them. blossomed as individual owners enlarQed, remodeled

by the company The villaqe

and beautified their ho . es. The Kiwanis Club numbered the streets and houses t o prepare f o r home mail delivery.

In 1980. the Lanqdale co~munity, alonq with other teMt i le towns of Shawmut, Fai r faM, and River v iew. was in c orpo r ated int o the city of Valle y . Alabama. Many of the facilities once owned and operated by WestPoint Pepperell and its forerunners have been taken ove r b y the city. Howe ver . the people who live in the community will probably continue to have a closeness and a spi r it of sharinq wh i ch have alWays been characteristic to the residents of LanQdale.

OCT 31 1991 DESCRIP'rION OF LANGDALE MILL VILLAGE

Ab. Hi 1 01 C-'::r The Langdale Mill Village is l ocated on hills which roll

down to the banks of the Chattahoochee River. Thus the names

on

of the various neighborhoods such as Randolph Hill , , Sugar Hill , Cemetery Hill and Reservoir Hill. other interesting neighborhoods are Ginty Branch , Tallassee Street and New Street. These street names no longer exist on city maps, but many residents remember them and the reasons for them .

Houses were all of frame construction and were in four or four room styles . 'l'hree rooms were single family homes and they usually had small front and rear porches. lour room houses usually housed two families , each sharing half the full front porch and half the back porch . Each family had its own front door . 1"our room houses had one central chimney with fireplaces back to back . l"i ve and six room houses were built for excepti onally large families which had two or more members serving the company or for mill managers or town merchants.

Most houses in the district are urban sites. Many sites are elevated. Most roofs are gable . Several cottages have pyramid roofs , particularly the three room cottages.

The village is sharply contrasted with the other three mill villages by the classic Georgian style brick public buildings , the classic church buildings , the memorial parks , bridges, rock walls and bridges all of which are beautifully preserved and in excellant condi tiona

The large majority of houses have been meticulously maintained.
