Who should apply?

This summer academy targets oboe & Englishhorn players – professionalizing students, orprofessionals and teachers – who want todiscover the basics of improvisation in variouscontexts, or develop further their skills, in theprivileged setting of La Roche-Guyon Castle.

Beware, the minimum instrumental levelpreferred is 8 or 9 years in music school orequivalent.

Jean-Luc « Oboman » Fillon belongs to the rare musicianswhose artistic journey is punctuated of original and diverseprojects (11 albums in leader). Multi-instrumental composer,with a strong classical background (ex-soloist of the EuropeanSymphonic Orchestra), he takes one of the most boundary-breaking and convincing artistic path of our musical stage,with a careful blend of discretion and determination. Hiscredo : to build a musical project anchored in Jazz, Worldmusic and improvisation around the specific sound of oboe,oboe d’amore and English horn.Invited as a solist by the National Orchestra of Ile-de-Franceand by the Regional Orchestra of Normandy for his project“Oboa Nomade”, he tours in many countries (France, UnitedStates, Germany, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Austria,Portugal, Argentina…), and is the artistic director of « Sons9 » festival in Paris.

Master-classes

Certified from the Paris national conservatoire, Obomanteaches improvisation at the national academies of Cergy-Pontoise and Mantes in the Yvelines district. His musicalexperience, his mastery of various instruments (Oboe, EnglishHorn, Bass clarinet, Electric bass, Double bass) and hisknowledges in composing and conducting allow him tosuccessfully lead master classes with ease. Jean-Luc Fillonparticularly knows the expectations of students with aclassical background and who wish to try out improvisation ;he gives many master-classes : CNSM of Lyon, HEM ofGenève, HEM of Lausanne, HEM of Lugano, Universities ofNew-York, Austin, Birmingham, Porto, Buenos Aires andnumerous national academies in France.

Born in a family of great musicians, he learned the organ asautodidacte. He was influenced, among others, by RayManzarek (The Doors), John Lord (Deep Purple), KeithEmerson (The Nice, Emerson, Lake and Palmer), Gregg Rolie(Santana), Jimmy Smith et Eddy Louiss (album « Dinasty »with Stan Getz, Rene Thomas et Bernard Lubat) ; but also bythe pianists Fats Wallers, Oscar Peterson et Errol Garner.With a strong background as an organist, he participated inmany projects in musicals, and played with the Frenchbluesman Bill Deraime, the singer Nicole Croisille and manyartists of the French variety. Philippe is passionate about thesynthesizer and especially the « vintage » instruments likethe electric piano Fender Rhodes and the organ Hammond.These mythical instruments have shaped the music of today.Phillippe will offer you groovy accompaniments in the spiritof great jazz organists.

He graduated in 2012, with a gold medal in Jazz pianoand a Jazz Master degree at the Cergy-Pontoise nationalconservatoire where he studied with Jean-Luc Fillon andLaurent Colombani. He then obtained a scholarship atthe Centre Des Musiques Didier Lockwood, where hestudied with Benoît Sourisse and André Charlier, amongothers. He graduated in 2015 with a Jazz DNSPMdiploma.He plays as pianist and organist in various styles :Rhythm' N Blues, Soul, Jazz and also Rock with variousprojects like Mohamed Najem & Friends, Rumpus("Dawn" released in 2016), The Kathy Jazz Project, TheJazz Cookers Workshop ("Loose Togetherness" releasedin 2015, collaborations with Ricky Ford and RazulSiddik).He also works as arranger for Jean-Luc Fillon and for theangolian singer Lulendo in his project African Market,for Harmony orchestra, rhythm section and choir.He has already performed in different countries likeCameroon, Gabon, United Kingdom, Portugal and Italy.

Clément Petit is, first and foremost, an avid cellist hungry fornow sounds and artistic encounters. He is eager forcollaborations and new musical contexts, and enjoys mixingthings up to throw the listener off-guard with his eclecticcreations. He is one of those musicians constantly seeking toreinvent their instruments by developing techniques, usingnew musical languages and rewriting the rules.

Raised in a diverse and community-based Parisian suburbs, hewould be immersed in a world of Afro-American, Caribbeanand electronic music, before throwing himself intocontemporary and improvised music. Petit’s vision of music isvery large, he would claim these influences as his own and assuch he has his own highly personal sound: he knocks downthe walls of genre and allows the many different sounds tomingle and interact freely.

Whether it be as a cellist or as a composer/arranger/producer,it’s within this optic that he undertakes his projects (Roseaux,Space Galvachers, Le Banquet…) or collaborates with differentartists (Blick Bassy, Oumou Sangare, Ray Lema, FidelFourneyron, Angélique Kidjo, Nicolas Jules, Ala.ni, MélissaLavaux, Pierrejean Gaucher...), diversifying formats andexperimenting with all sonic aesthetics without discrimination.

Transports

We can provide you with a free shuttle journey on the30th of June at 2 PM from Paris airports (Paris Charles-de-Gaulle is best), to come to la Roche-Guyon. It will beplanned according to the needs. The return journey toParis on Sunday July 7th can be planned as well.

You can also come to le Roche-Guyon Castle by train(line J, from Paris Saint-Lazare to Mantes-la-Jolie – 35 to55 minutes). A free shuttle can also be planned ifnecessary.
