Fellow Kiwanians,

Greeting to you all on behalf of Eastern Canada and

Caribbean Governor Hope Markes and Regional Trustee-

Region F, Lambert Longley. On behalf of The Kiwanis Club of Freeport and The Kiwanis

Club of Eight Mile Rock our hosts of this the 2nd Quarter Division Council Meeting of

Kiwanis Bahamas, we welcome you to the beautiful island of Grand Bahama and trust

that you would enjoy the activities planned. I extend profound gratitude to the

organizers of this event from both clubs with special recognition to PE Lamardo, PP

Martin and DP Nerika. It is when we come together great things happen.

Special recognition is given to the 2012-2013 administration under the leadership of

Lieutenant Governor Sandra Munnings for assuming the distinguished titles. Just as the

scripture says “only what you do for Christ will last” so shall you be rewarded for your

work when you give it your best.

Today’s meeting is extra special as we celebrate the leadership succession planning of

this Division. We gather here particularly to ascend Lieutenant Governor Elect L. Andrea

Whyte to Lieutenant Governor Designate and to elect a new Lieutenant Governor

Elect. I extend God’s riches blessings to all seeking leadership.

In less than two weeks we will be traveling to the 97th Eastern Canada and Caribbean

District Convention. To date approximately 20 Kiwanians have expressed that they are

going. As your leader, I thank you for the sacrifice made to travel especially during

these tough economic times. The experience and education gained will far outweigh

the financial sacrifice. I pray for travelling mercy and guidance as you fellowship with

Kiwanians across the region but most importantly as you deliberate Kiwanis business on

behalf of your respective clubs.

Fellow Kiwanians, I am inspired by the passion displayed for service by members of this

great Division 22. Yes we are all different and unique by our very nature but together

we are one in service. Six months ago we embarked on a journey, “Connecting

Communities, Enriching Lives”. Truly today is spirit filled and rewarding, for that I give him

all of the praise, with five months left in this administration I entreat you to continue the

journey.

Presidents! A journey requires strength and resilience. And to keep your spirit in top

shape, pray and meditate daily. Never stop learning, and always give yourself time to

digest the experiences that form your days and years. Delays, detours,

disappointments – will inevitably be part of the fabric of your Kiwanis journey and your

role as a leader. Be willing to adapt to change, embracing the blessings that flow from

unexpected events. Allow yourself the flexibility to go with God.

Members! You are Kiwanis, let us gather together to make great things happen within

our various communities. Often, when we are faced with a particularly difficult problem

along the road, we need not reinvent the wheel to get going again. Learn from others,

use the wisdom gained from others’ experiences, and build upon their lessons to forge

ahead. No matter how much our society would have us believe otherwise, we cannot

journey wonderfully, hopefully, and joyfully through life without faith in God.

With five months left each club has the opportunity to turn good into great, let us not

lose focus on the goals and aspirations set out October 1st, 2013. Although we are

approaching the finish line, do not slow down but rather thrust ahead with sight of the

victory, push your chest forward, throw your legs back and in the form of the world

renowned athlete Hussain Bolt, FLASH like a lightening.

Our Lord is the brightest star, giving us direction. He is the gentle voice within who

guides us. He is the fount of unlimited strength, courage, goodness and love. Thank you

for all you do in the name of Kiwanis.

God Bless Kiwanis Bahamas- Sunshine 22

Page 6: Objects of Kiwanis International

It is with heartfelt gratitude that I express my excitement

and pleasure as I assume the post of Lieutenant

Governor Designate. Thank you for giving me the

opportunity to serve as the fourth female Lieutenant

Governor.

As an organization we have enjoyed unparalleled success within the International

Kiwanis community. “Together We Can” continue this tradition while we focus on

spreading happiness, relating and connecting with those in need, and inoculating

sound values to the underprivileged be it within or outside our community.

My vision for Sunshine Division 22 is to continue its role as the preeminent source of

support for the most vulnerable among us, particularly children and to improve the

quality of life globally.

My immediate goals are:

To foster a closer relationship working with past Lieutenant Governors.

Focus on Membership so that we can be equipped to serve those on the outside

“charity begins at home and ends abroad.”

Service Leadership Program will be a key focus as the youth will one day

become the leaders of the Kiwanis organization and keep the Kiwanis name

going in The Bahamas.

Live out the life and legacy of DLG Roy Davis who was a true Kiwanian not in

name but in action.

To put in place a comprehensive fundraising strategy to complete The Roy Davis

Kiwanis Centre in the shortest possible time.

Focus on Kiwanis being exposed in terms of Public Relation; so that people will

know that the Kiwanis movement is still here; and that the Kiwanis name is

synonymous with rendering Service.

In conclusion, I encourage us to continue working together, Kiwanians TOGETHER WE

CAN.

Yours in Kiwanis Service, L. Andrea Whyte

Kiwanis Bahamas Policy and Procedure for Clubs on Criminal History Background Checks

To ensure the highest standards of leadership, the Kiwanis Club of_______________ requires a clear criminal

history background check for all Kiwanians as part of the eligibility criteria to hold membership.

Additionally, to ensure that adults working with youth are of the utmost moral fiber, the Kiwanis Club

of_____________requires a clear criminal history background check for any Kiwanian or nonmembers working on

behalf of the club with youth under age 18 (such as club chairs and administrators and their assistants or

committee members) and for all adults – both Kiwanians and non-members – registered for, participating in, or

staying overnight at any event organized by the club involving youth under age 18.

Successful completion of the background check (a “clear check”) is based on verification of a Police Character

Record having been attained not more than four months to date of submission and of satisfactory record

determined for that person. For club board members, a clear check is necessary to be an eligible candidate and

thus must be completed before elections are held. For club appointees, a clear check is necessary before assuming

the position. For adults working with youth as stated above, a clear check is necessary prior to arrival at the club

event.

The club recognizes only its own criminal history background check process as valid. All background checks shall be

reviewed and evaluated by the Board of Directors and determined to be clear or not clear, based on the criteria

stated in the Kiwanis Club of _______________Policies.

The Club President shall be advised if a check indicates a problem or concern that requires further investigation or

is determined to be not clear. In either case, The Board of Directors shall notify such person. A check that is not

clear causes automatic denial of the right to hold the position or attend the event in question.

*Clubs are also recommended to use the same service KI uses (Safe Hiring Solutions)

As determined by the board.

*Determine which person(s) will review the background checks. This should probably be the Club Secretary, since

they often have the greatest experience in administrative tasks and often serve more than one year in office,

providing continuity in the process. A committee should not be appointed to review background checks, because

having several people involved encumbers the process and violates privacy.

The Club Board shall have final authority on the matter. The Club Board and Club Secretary should handle

information received in the strictest manner of confidentiality and may be asked to sign a confidentiality

agreement.

An individual may receive a copy of his/her background check by requesting it in writing. Background checks are

valid for a period of five years. All relevant persons who have not had a criminal history background check

conducted and verified as clear within the past five years at any given time are subject to a new check.

11

Page 14: Objects of Kiwanis International

Suggested Procedure for Clubs to Adopt

Note: These procedures may be included in the policy

Criminal History Background Checks

To carry out the club policy on criminal history background checks, the following shall apply.

1. Responsibility for Costs

Each individual subject to a background check shall be responsible to pay the charges.

The on file record shall expire as at September 30th

of the 5th

year. A new character record must be presented on

or before September 30th

2. Convictions that Cause Ineligibility

A criminal history background check is considered “not clear” if it indicates: a felony or misdemeanor involving

moral turpitude; a felony or conviction or registration of a violent and/or sexual nature, involving any type of

abuse of a child, involving threatening or intimidating behavior, or otherwise of a physical nature; or a felony

related to larceny or theft. (The club can also refer to the examples of such convictions found in Kiwanis

International Procedure 197)

Other types of felony convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Board of Directors.

Any conviction legally reversed or overturned by the proper authorities shall not be considered when evaluating

the background check.

3. Discipline

Individuals with a background check determined to be not clear will be subject to the following actions:

A. Current club board members or club appointees will be disciplined as determined by the Club Board,

including but not limited to suspension or removal from their position.

B. Candidates for any club board position or club appointment will be considered disqualified as a candidate

for such.

C. Adults wishing to participate in club youth events will not be allowed to do so.

D. Conduct unbecoming process may be engaged depending on the convictions identified in the report.

Kiwanis Club of New Providence

“Building Better Communities Through Teamwork

KCNP has traditionally been a supporter of both Division and Club events and this year is no different Kiwanis Club of New Providence’s (KCNP) second quarter commitment to teamwork began with the club active participation in the Governor’s visit. The membership played an active role in the planning, execution and participation of events held as a part of Governor Hope Markes’ official visit. … give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than the material value of life….. In February we visited with the residents of the Demitrius Centre in celebration of Valentine’s Day. We provided the residents with lunch as well as prayed, read scriptures, inspirational poems and sang songs with the residents. We believe the residents enjoyed our visit as much as we did.

In celebration to the club’s 23rd Anniversary (26th March), the club began its week in worship at the Christian Life Centre. In attendance were old members, new members and former members to mark this memorable occasion.

Our meeting program in celebration of 23rd Anniversary was low keyed but one of fun and fellowship.

… develop by precept and example, a more intelligent aggressive an serviceable citizenship… KCNP has been extremely supportive of the SLP program, both at the individual club and at the District levels.

During the second quarter, KCNP began sponsoring a breakfast program in conjunction with the Claridge Primary K-Kids Club. The breakfast program is designed to provide breakfast twice a month and caters to Claridge Primary School students on the government lunch program.

KCNP has also participated in the various SLP District level projects such as : K-Kids Fruit & Water Day, K-Kids Forum and Speech Competition, Builder’s Club Forum and Speech Competition; Key Club District Convention: KCNP sponsored an ad for the booklet and provided 1/3 of the registration fees for four delegates.

KCNP has also finalized the Petition for Charter for the St. Thomas Moore K-Kids Club. The petition has been sent to Kiwanis International so we expect the club will be fully chartered in April.

Read Around the World. All of the New Providence based clubs were invited to participate in this project. The Reading fair was held in Pinewood Gardens in conjunction with that area’s Urban Renewal Program. More than one hundred (100) youth were read to and served. The young people were read to by Kiwanians and Member of Parliament for the area. Lunch was also provided. Each child was given a book to take home.

34

Page 37: Objects of Kiwanis International

YCPO/Eliminate Committee provided “Bundles for Babies” (Bundles included items for the new born) for the students of the PACE school. We were also able to fellowship with the students for a short time and shared with them from our experiences. The KCNP Team continue with its quarterly soup kitchen project. KCNP members cooked and provided soup and breakfast to over one hundred persons in the Bains Town area in partnership with the Salvation Army.

…. Fundraising…… We successfully completed our second major fund raising event for the year. We hosted the premier of the movie Noah. The event was planned strategically to be a part of the club’s week of activities in celebration of our 23rd anniversary. The event was successful. The club is planning one more major fundraiser which we expect will be held in June 2014. This quarter Membership Retention and Growth and Education (MGRE) committee has been working hard to build the club’s membership with quality members and finding creative ways to build unity within the club.

MGRE Committee hosted a membership drive at the popular plaza in the south from which we are hoping to get some interested persons. We were able to promote Kiwanis to the shoppers while bringing awareness to what we are doing in our local communities. We inducted three members this quarter and reinstated a former member. The new members are fitting in, in fact it is hard to believe “they just reach”. President Lorna’s group competition is building momentum and competition is strong but fun. Let’s hear it for the White Lillies! Yellow Roses! Birds of Paradise! and the Purple Orchids! We are also continuing with our “Ladies Night Out” at least once per quarter. Fellowship with members of the Kiwanis family has always been a treat for KCNP, this quarter we were able to participate in four (4) Interclubs including an interclub with the Aktion Club. As usual, member participation has been very good. The Kiwanis Club of New Providence will continue in its efforts to serve the community through service

…. Encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships….

…. to render altruistic service and to build better communities ……

…a practical means for enduring friendships…
